Lake Poway is a small, clear reservoir in Poway, CA about 30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. It is stocked heavily with rainbow trout in the winter months, and offers good fishing for bass, catfish, and bluegill in warmer months.

  • The lake is deep and clear, with good shoreline accessibility. There is no launch ramp, and float tubes, canoes and kayaks are not permitted. Rental boats, including rowboats, motorboats, sailboats, and paddle boats are available through the concession.

    Bass are mandatory catch and release from March 1st through May 31st. Lake Poway also maintains a 4 fish limit for trout per angler, per day.

    A well-stocked concession stand offers snacks, bait and basic fishing tackle. The lake sits inside the Lake Poway Recreation Area, which is loaded with other amenities. There are restrooms, barbecues, picnic tables, a softball field, volleyball court, and hiking trails. There is also a square foot pavilion area for hosting large events, like the annual Lake Poway Youth Fishing Derby.

    Operating Schedule and Fees

    Night fishing hours open through Sept. 5 at Lake Poway

    Night fishing hours began July 10 at Lake Poway and will continue every Friday and Saturday through Sept. 5.

    While Lake Poway normally closes at sunset, night fishing hours will allow fishing enthusiasts to keep reeling fish in until p.m. Boats must be returned to the dock between 9 and 11 p.m.

    Traditional fishing hours are also available Wednesday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to sunset.

    Boat rentals will be limited due to COVID Everyone must bring a face covering and wear it when required. Picture ID will be required at the dock after renting a boat at concessions. Half-day boats are available starting at 4 p.m.

    In compliance with county and state public health orders, boats will be sanitized daily and are only rented once per day. All occupants of a boat must be from the same household. Boats are available on a first-come basis.

    To facilitate fishing, the lake was stocked with 1, pounds of catfish today and will be restocked with 1, pounds each on July 17, July 31, Aug. 14 and Aug.

    Boat rental costs are $30 for a full-day fishing rental and $24 for a half-day rental. Senior and military discounts are available.

    Fishing costs are $7 for adults, $3 for seniors ages 55 and up, $4 for military with ID and $3 for youths ages 8 to Youths age 7 and under are free with a paid permit.

        Lake Poway is located approx. 20 miles northeast of the city of San Diego. From Interstate 15, exit Rancho Bernardo Road and travel east 4 miles to Lake Poway Road. Turn left and follow to park entrance.

     The lake is open for boating and fishing Wednesday through Sunday, sunrise to sunset. Camping is allowed at the Lake Poway Wilderness Campground, located at the base of the dam. The campground is inaccessible by vehicle, so campers must walk in one mile on a moderately difficult trail.      Rowboats, motor boats, sailboats, and paddle boats available for rent at the consession stand. No private boats are allowed. Float-tubing is allowed. Float-tube rules are as follows:

    • Adults (16 and over) may float tube. Youth (15 and under) must be accompanied by a responsible adult, tethered within 50 feet, and have checked in with the Ranger on duty.
    • Float tubes must be in sound condition and completely cover the immersed portion of an anglers body so as to prevent sustained, direct body contact with the water.
    • Waders must be worn at all times while float tube fishing.
    • Use of float tubes is restricted to at least feet, but no further than feet from the shore.
    • A U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD (personal flotation device) must be within reach or worn at all times.
    • All float tube anglers must possess a readily available horn or whistle to warn approaching crafts.
    • At least square inches of international orange material must be displayed or worn at least 12 inches above the water line at all times while float tube fishing.
    • All float tubes must be launched from the dock area with the assistance of the Ranger or Dock Attendant.

     The lake is stocked weekly with 1, lb. of rainbow trout, November through mid-May and catfish during the summer months. Fishing permits are $ for adults, $ for youth ages years, and $ for seniors (55 and over) on Thursdays. Children 7 years and under may fish off an adult permit with a one fish limit per permit. Night fishing is allowed from June-Sept. on Friday and Saturday nights from p.m. to p.m. There are also largemouth bass bluegill and crappie here.      Like many of the smaller trout-stocked lakes in San Diego county, Poway has a reputation of producing some record-sized largemouth bass. Lake record is pounds. Using soft-plastic trout imitation lures is a good method to entice one of these hogs into biting.
