Living Room Lighting Ideas That Make the Case for Boho Style (As If You Needed Any Proof)

Are you a non-conformist who enjoys eclectic spaces with a laid-back sensibility? Then bohemian interiors might be right up your alley. The term bohemian dates back to the 1800s when it was first used to describe people who chose to live an unconventional, artistic life. Similarly, bohemian interiors, although mainstream today, are free-spirited and incorporate unexpected choices. It’s almost impossible to browse through Pinterest or swipe through Instagram without seeing bohemian or “boho” tossed around. While the style has become widely adopted, what exactly does a bohemian interior entail and what are some things to consider if you want to achieve the look in your own home?

Basically boho spaces include a mashup of cultural influences with ethnic undertones and are synonymous with an earthy, natural style full of texture, warmth, and plenty of greenery. Unlike many other design styles, boho interiors don’t come with any rules except having fun and including things that appeal to you. This results in relaxed, welcoming spaces with an abundance of pattern, color, and approachability that’s hard to pin down. Luckily, we’ve found seven living room lighting ideas that will get you started on the right foot.

1. Go glam.

Glam and boho CAN play nice. Just because you’re going for a laidback bohemian vibe, doesn’t mean you can’t infuse your space with luxe accessories. An eye-catching tassel chandelier brings an elegant touch to this boho-chic room. The abstract artwork and saturated green sofa and lounge chair are particularly striking.

2. Mix and match.

A chunky knit blanket can infuse a bohemian vibe into virtually any space. Here, Brady Tolbert over at Emily Henderson Design layers one in his monochromatic living room that’s punctuated by refined details like a brass coffee table and graphic artwork for an elevated boho look. A combination of wall and floor lights with gold accents blend in seamlessly, while a Beni ourain rug and leather chair add quintessential bohemian style.

3. Double down on your lighting styles.

Make a real statement by pairing architectural light fixtures with oversize basket pendants for a look that’s equal parts modern and tropical. This edited living room lighting idea is pared-down boho at its best. A woven area rug echoes the textured light shades and adds warmth from the ground up.

4. Embrace texture.

Sometimes, more is just more, as evidenced by this picture-perfect boho space belonging to Jenni from Kohteessa. She successfully layers patterns and textures to create a one-of-a-kind interior that is thoroughly modern and appealing. The icing on the cake is a tiered, woven pendant light from IKEA that punctuates her Scandi-chic refuge beautifully.

5. Offset a single sconce.

Yes, a linear living room lighting idea can work in a bohemian design. Katie Hodges used Workstead’s adjustable wall lamp to balance the alone window and add weight to a neutral color palette. A pair of rattan basket chairs add texture and character while a sheepskin throw softens the look.

6. Make a (small) statement.

Soft earth tones and plenty of texture reign supreme in this boho haven. Take cues from The Joshua Tree House and select a diminutive pendant light that’s practical without distracting. Because when you’ve got a great view working for you, your interior design can make a statement without working too hard. Hanging planters, a live-edge wood coffee table, and a Moroccan rug are staples that do wonders at transforming interiors into a bohemian paradise.

DIY Boho Wall Sconce

If you ask me, wall sconces make any room look classy. The thoughtful placement of a sconce makes the room look intentional and adds mood lighting. But, to my dismay, I found wall sconces to be expensive. So, like any good homemaker, I decided to make my own!

A DIY wall sconce was way easier than I had anticipated! I made a DIY Boho wall sconce with just a few materials ordered off the Internet. And I think the results were stunning. I’m so happy with how mine turned out!

My original inspiration for this style came from this photo:

See that sconce right at the edge of the photo by the bedside? That’s what I wanted, just in a natural wood color! And here’s what mine ended up looking like:

Yeah, I love it!

And I’ll show you step by step exactly what I used and how to make these beautiful light pendants!

DIY Materials

You can make this DIY cheaper by using cheaper light bulbs, no wood stain or sanding, and borrowing tools from friends. 🙂

  • Measure out how far you would like your dowel rod to stick out from the wall. Cut dowel to size. I made mine 7.5 inches. If you are using a heavier lampshade than the one I used, you may want to make your dowel shorter and thus stronger.
  • Sand dowel rods until smooth.
  • According to package directions, apply two coats of wood stain to dowel rod and let dry.
  • Drill a hole with 3/8-in. bit as close to the center of the diameter of the dowel rod as you can. Drill the hole half the length of the screw (1.5-in.). The other half will go into the wall.
  • Use a drill with an Allen (hex) bit to drive the hex insert into the dowel hole.
  • Screw the flat side of the screw into the hex insert.
  • Measure on the wall where you would like to place your dowel rod. It should be higher than where you would like the light bulb to hang from. I drilled my dowel roughly 75 inches from the floor.
  • If drilling into a stud in the wall, predrill a hole in the wall with a 3/8-in. drill bit.
  • If drilling into drywall, you’ll want to use a drywall anchor insert. What bit size you use will depend on the size of the insert you buy; start with a smaller drill bit and work your way up as needed. Insert anchor into wall.
  • Screw dowel rod to the wall and secure.
  • Assemble the sconce by screwing in the light bulb to the swag lamp kit (while it is unplugged!) and stringing the shade onto it.
  • Wrap rope cord around the dowel rod until shade and lightbulb are hanging in the position you like.
  • Plug it in and enjoy your new DIY boho wall sconce!

See?! Isn’t that easy and much more affordable than buying an expensive light fixture and having to pay someone to install it?!

I hope you enjoy your new wall sconce as much as I do mine!

This guide helps you determine that for yourself and works you through the process of making design decisions that speak of YOU!

I’ve had lots of people tell me, “I love your home style! What do you call it? It’s beautiful!” And honestly, my best answer is something like… “Minimal Mediterannean Boho?” Through the same process I walk you through in my guide, I essentially created my own home design style, one that spoke of me rather than everybody else.

You can do the same.

⚠️ WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including: lead & wood dust which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, go to

The warning listed on our website is in accordance with a law implemented by the state of California called Proposition-65. Under this regulation, California law requires businesses to provide warnings for products containing chemicals that the state of California has identified as carcinogens or reproductive toxins. Recent amendments to this law require any retailers selling to California residents to list this warning on their website.

There are currently almost 1,000 substances on the Proposition-65 list, ranging from cigarette smoke and asbestos to aspirin and wood dust. One of the materials listed is lead, and because most light fixtures contain brass in the sockets or in the frames of the shades, we are required to put this warning label on our light fixtures. Brass is a metal alloy consisting of copper, zinc and small amounts of lead, which is what triggers the “lead” warning under California Proposition-65 since lead has been shown to cause cancer when it is ingested.

We hope that this explains things a little more clearly. If you have any additional questions, we would suggest visiting the website mentioned above for more information and the complete list of substances that require warnings under Proposition-65.

I was left standing alone without panties in an empty room. Pants with panties should have been lying on the street at the entrance to the barn, but when I looked out. they were not there. I haven't come home often since I became independent.

I started to gasp. It seemed as if the member occupied the entire length of her throat to the stomach itself. But no good was expected from the side of the oppressor.
