For other uses, see WAYV (disambiguation).

WayV (Chinese: 威神V; pinyin: WēiShén V) is a Chinese boy band which serves as the fourth sub-unit and China-based unit of the South Korean boy band NCT managed by SM Entertainment's Chinese sub-label, Label V.[5][6] The group debuted on January 17, 2019, with their digital extended play The Vision, and is composed of seven members: Kun, Ten, Winwin, Dozen, Xiaojun, Hendery and Yangyang.

The group have released one studio album and three extended plays and made regular appearances on Billboard's world charts.

History[edit]

2016–2018: Pre-debut activities, formation[edit]

Prior to joining SM Entertainment, some of the members were already involved in the entertainment industry. In 2011, Ten participated as a contestant in the Thai TV show Teen Superstar under the name TNT.[citation needed] Xiaojun was a singing contestant in Zhejiang TV survival program X-Fire in November 2015.[citation needed]

In 2013, Ten was the first member to join the label through an SM Global audition in Bangkok, Thailand.[7] In 2015, Lucas was cast through SM Global Audition in Hong Kong,[8] in July of the same year, Kun at Beijing, China,[citation needed] while Winwin was street-cast in his school by an SM Casting Manager and passed the audition.[citation needed] In February 2016, YangYang passed an audition in Taiwan.[citation needed] Hendery was street-cast in 2017. Xiaojun was cast in 2018.[citation needed]

All seven members of WayV were originally part of SM Rookies, a pre-debut team of trainees under SM Entertainment. In 2014, Ten alongside some of his co-members appeared on the Mnet-produced Exo 90:2014, a show starring labelmates Exo, where they get to do dance performances to 90s K-pop songs. In April 2016, Kun sang with NCT U's in the Chinese version of "Without You" and joined them for the song's promotional stages,[citation needed] while Winwin joined as dancer for NCT U's "The 7th Sense" at their first live performance in China at the 16th Music Feng Yun Bang Awards at the same month.[citation needed]

On January 28, 2016, SM founder and producer Lee Soo-man announced plans for a new boy group NCT with several different units to be based in cities around the world.[9]

Ten debuted with the first unit, NCT U, on April 9, 2016.[10] Although Kun participated in the Chinese version of the NCT U song "Without You" in 2016 he was not considered as a member until he and Lucas debuted in NCT 2018, a project involving all members of NCT, and promotions of their album Empathy.[11][12][13] Winwin debuted as part of the second unit, NCT 127, on July 10, 2016. On August 13, 2018, SM announced their plan to launch a China-oriented unit under the project name, NCT China.[14]

The formation of WayV was announced through the group's official Weibo account on December 31.[15] The group consists of seven members: the four preexisting NCT members - Kun, Winwin, Ten and Lucas - along with three new members who were just introduced through SM Rookies earlier that year - Hendery, Xiaojun, and Yangyang. The group was announced to be under SM Entertainment's new China-exclusive label, Label V.[16][6]

The group is a sub-unit of NCT, although it was not promoted as an NCT group until the announcement of NCT 2020.[17][18] Journalists theorize that the distancing of WayV from the NCT label was due to tense relations between China and South Korea.[17][19] Despite this, since their formation, SM Entertainment CEO Chris Lee had acknowledged WayV as NCT's China-based unit.[5]

2019: Debut, Take Off and Take Over the Moon[edit]

On January 17, 2019, WayV debuted with their first digital EPThe Vision with a Chinese version of NCT 127's "Regular" as the lead single.[17] All three tracks of the EP earned the top ten rank on Billboard World Digital Songs.[20] The group debuted at number four on the Billboard Social 50, the best debut on the chart since XXXTentacion in June 2018.[21]

WayV released their first EP Take Off with lead single with the same name on May 9.[22] The EP debuted at seventh on the Billboard World Albums Chart and claimed number one on iTunes top album chart in 30 regions.[23][24] Meanwhile, the single debuted at number two on the QQ Music Weekly Popularity chart.[25]

On October 29, WayV released their second EP Take Over the Moon with the title track "Moonwalk".[26] Members Hendery and Yangyang participated in lyric writing for the first time in songs "King of Hearts" and "We Go Nanana". The group made their debut on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums and Korean Gaon Album Chart by ranking at number twenty-four and five respectively.[27][28] The group had their first comeback stage for the album during MBC Music's Show Champion on October 30, marking their first performance in Korea.[29] On November 5, the group released an English version of "Love Talk" which debuted and peaked at number three on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales.[30][31] The song also marked the group's first entry on QQ Music Weekly Digital Sales Chart by ranking at number two.[32] The repackaged version of the album titled Take Over the Moon: Sequel was released in 2020, adding the English version of Love Talk and the spoken track "WayV.oice #1" to the original track list.[33]

The group then went on a promotional tour in China, South Korea, and Thailand.[34]

2020: Awaken the World and NCT 2020[edit]

In 2020, WayV was the second group from SM Entertainment to hold a live online concert - jointly organized by SM Entertainment and Naver, as part of the world's first online-dedicated live concert series Beyond LIVE. The live concert, which was WayV first-ever concert and titled WayV - Beyond the Vision, was held on May 3.[35] The group performed songs from their prior albums as well as a mashup of "Turn Back Time" and "Bad Alive", two tracks on their first studio album Awaken the World which was released five weeks later on June 9, 2020.[36][37]

Awaken the World was preceded by an online game designed for smartphones, challenging players to unlock teaser images of the individual members. Additionally, individual video teasers of the members were released across different platforms.[38][39] Both the album's physical release and the music video of its lead single "Turn Back Time" were released with a delay due to the removal of potential issues with the outfits used in its promotional visual content.[40][41][42] Upon its release, WayV earned their first top-three entry on Tencent Music's UNI Chart (previously known as Yo! Bang) and the Gaon Album Chart.[43][44] The album also peaked at number nine on the Billboard World Albums chart, while "Turn Back Time" ranked at number twelve on the World Digital Song Sales chart.[45][46]Awaken the World became the group's first release to chart in Japanese music charts by appearing on both Billboard Japan Hot Albums and Oricon Weekly Albums Chart.[47][48] Subsequently, the group released a Korean version of "Turn Back Time" digitally with an accompanied similar music video.[49] On July 29, an English version of the track "Bad Alive" was released as a digital single.[50] The single managed to rank at number one on QQ Music's Daily Digital Sales chart and earned Gold certification hours after it was released.[51][52] It eventually ranked at number six on the weekly chart.[53]

WayV participated in NCT's project NCT 2020, combining members of WayV with members of the other NCT subunits NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and two new members. The group released the album in two parts, with NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1 released in October and NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 2 in November, marking WayV's first official promotion as an NCT subunit and Xiaojun, Hendery & Yangyang's official induction as NCT members.[18] For the album, WayV recorded the song "月之迷 (Nectar)" which debuted at number twelve on the UNI Chart.[54][55]

By the end of the year, WayV received international awards from Mnet Asian Music Awards and Asia Artist Awards,[56][57] and ranked at third place on the UNI Chart Top 10 Groups of 2020 based on their achievements on the local chart.[58]

2021–present: Kick Back[edit]

On March 10, 2021, WayV released their third EP, Kick Back, with the lead single of the same name.[59] Members Winwin and Lucas were absent during the promotion of the album given they were undergoing quarantine in China for solo schedules.[60] The album became the group's first number one album on the Gaon Album Chart, and eventually earned the group their first certification for selling more than 250,000 copies in South Korea.[61][62]

On June 23, WayV released a new song "Everytime" as part of the soundtrack album for Chinese drama, Falling Into Your Smile [zh].[63][64]

Members[edit]

Sub-units[edit]

In June 2021, SM Entertainment formed the group's first sub-unit named WayV-Kun & Xiaojun, composed of members Kun and Xiaojun. The sub-unit debuted by releasing a pop-ballad single album titled Back to You.[73] In August 17, Ten and Yangyang formed a second sub-unit named WayV-Ten & Yangyang and debuted with a hip-hop single titled "Low Low".[74] A third unit WayV-Lucas & Hendery was scheduled to release a debut digital single titled "Jalapeño" on August 25 but canceled due to the controversy surrounding Lucas' private life.[75]

Other ventures[edit]

Endorsements[edit]

WayV has endorsed and collaborated with multiple brands including Skechers,[76] Carslan,[77] Cigalong Beauty,[78] and Maeil Barista Rules.[79] The group has also featured on the cover of magazines such as Nylon China, Harper's Bazaar China, InStyleIcon, and Men's Uno.

Philanthropy[edit]

On July 23, 2020, WayV donated through the China Social Welfare Foundation's charity project to help victims and front-line flood relief workers in Jiangxi and Hunan.[80]

In the group's interview, WayV stated their musical influences range from Jay Chou to Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, and Justin Bieber. They also look up to their fellow idols from SM Entertainment - Taemin from Shinee for Ten, and Exo for Kun and Winwin.[81]

The Vision is the debut single album by the Chinese boy band WayV, released in January 2019.[note 1] It was released by Label V for digital download on January 17, 2019. The EP marks the first NCT unit to debut since NCT Dream in 2016, and the debut of members Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yangyang.[2]

Background[edit]

WayV was first announced on August 12, 2018, under the working title, NCT China.[3] Their debut date was originally set for November of that year, though no further information was released at the time. In late November, SM announced that Winwin would be pulled from NCT 127's Regulate promotions in order to prepare for the new unit's upcoming release. In late December, the group was revealed to be known as WayV with a 7 member lineup debuting in January 2019.[2]

After a series of video teasers released on YouTube, the album title and lead single title were released on January 12.[4] The MV teaser was released on January 16 via SMTOWN's YouTube channel.[5]

The Vision included two Chinese versions of songs previously released by NCT 127, "Regular" and "Come Back", and one original song, "Dream Launch".

Reception[edit]

"Regular" peaked at number nine on the Chinese QQ chart, and number three on the US World chart.[6] "Dream Launch" peaked at numbers 15 and 6, respectively.[7]

Track listing[edit]

Notes[edit]

  1. ^Despite its release only containing three tracks totaling ten minutes, it was marketed as an extended play rather than a single.

[WayV-ehind] THE V

You probably get this a lot, but still, I have to tell you that I really enjoy reading your opinions and analysis on anything WayV. They’re always so well-thought out and very articulately delivered!

I think as a long term fan of many SM groups, it’s like I’m conditioned to want and expect repackage comeback whenever there’s a full album release. But reading your reasonings, I can totally see and prefer having a mini album comeback instead.

And with so many things that seem to be in the works over at SM for the second half of 2020, even though I always hope the best for WayV, I can’t help this mentality that anything will be better than nothing (well, anything except for NCT2020 tbh).

Speaking about WayV variety show coming up, maybe more details might come later, but I honestly have no idea what is SM doing having it seemingly exclusive on Seezn. I understand wanting to appeal WayV to Korean fans and also, promoting that app. But still...why making it unnecessarily harder for international fans, especially Chinese fans, their most important target audience, to access the contents. Regardless, I’m looking forward to it, and like you said, I hope it’s a build up to something worthwhile for WayV!

Just a little more, - I myself, gasping with excitement, without a voice asked, - Are you okay. I need to get out - and she, pulling on swimming trunks, which were already below the knees and a T-shirt, ran out of the va-gonchik. I was left alone. In the far corner Tatyana twisted.
