New owner of former Ahart’s Market in Bethlehem revealed

Ahart’s Market in south Bethlehem will become an Ideal Food Basket after being purchased for $2.3 million last week by Juan Diaz, the owner of CTown supermarket.

Diaz will continue to operate CTown as a separate store on East Third Street, about a half mile from Ahart’s, 410 Montclair Ave.

Redevelopment plans for the full-service grocery store include exterior and roofing repairs; demolition of the interior space; new refrigeration, heating and cooling systems; changes to the store’s layout; and new store colors and logo.

Ahart’s Market, long considered a staple in south Bethlehem, closed last month after 20 years.

An Ahart’s manager blamed the pandemic for slow sales, which were exacerbated even more by Lehigh University switching to remote learning. Ahart’s also has locations in Bath, Allentown and Blakeslee. Those stores remain open.

The Bethlehem location was critical, however, for an area that is considered a food desert, without ready access to fresh fruit and vegetables. City officials sprung into action to identify a buyer for the property who would keep it a grocery store.

“Access to fresh food and healthy groceries at affordable prices is paramount to Southside neighborhood residents,” Mayor Robert Donchez said in Tuesday’s news release. “Maintaining and building sustainable neighborhoods remain a constant focus for city administration. I am thrilled Ideal Food Basket chose to locate here.”

Ideal Food Basket stores were founded in 2007 and are members of America’s Food Basket LLC, a cooperative of independent grocers in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Georgia, Florida and Pennsylvania, according to the company website.

The company started with three stores and now has 50.

Ideal Food Basket is a member of the National Supermarket Association and strives to provide customers with fresh products, including produce and organic items, the website says.

Diaz said he’s excited to expand his footprint in the neighborhood.

“The opportunity to purchase this location was too good to pass up and I am pleased to be able to offer a full-service grocery store to the residents of South Bethlehem,” he said in Tuesday’s statement.

In the meantime, as residents wait for the store to open, the nonprofit Kellyn Foundation, based in Tatamy, will operate a Real Food Mobile Market 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday in Ahart’s parking lot.

The mobile market started last week and is expected to run until the new store is open.

‘Ideal Food Basket’ to Open Inside Former Ahart’s Market

A new grocery store, Ideal Food Basket, will open in the former Ahart’s on Montclair Avenue in Bethlehem later this year.

When news broke earlier this spring that a landmark grocery store on Bethlehem’s South Side would soon close, concerns grew that the urbanized area would slip further into the “food desert” category. Fortunately, that won’t be the case, after the Ahart’s building on Montclair Avenue was purchased by a businessman who owns other area supermarkets.

Juan Diaz, who owns the local C-Town chain of grocery stores, plans to open another market in the building called Ideal Food Basket, Channel 69 News reported recently.

The news station quoted Diaz as saying that the new store will be a full-service supermarket operated separately from the South Side C-Town, which is on Third Street.

Dumpsters offered evidence Friday of the work that is now under way to renovate the former Ahart’s store, which will reopen as a different supermarket–Ideal Food Basket–later this year. The store is located on Montclair Avenue in Bethlehem.

Work on renovating the Ahart’s building has already begun and is evidenced by the two dumpsters that now occupy the store’s parking lot.

A banner hung over the Ahart’s Market sign on the front of the building and a large sign at Montclair Avenue and Broadway that advertises “Ideal Food Basket…Coming Soon” offered further proof that extensive renovations are under way.

According to the website IdealFoodBaskets.com, “Ideal Food Basket stores are members of America’s Food Basket LLC, a Cooperative of independent food grocers located in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Georgia, Florida and Pennsylvania.”

“With more growth on the horizon, Ideal Food Basket grocery stores continue to have a strong mark throughout the neighborhoods of Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Long Island,” the site’s About Us section states. “As we celebrate our 12th year anniversary, our focus remains on serving our customers and the communities we are in.”
