Check your network settings

One of the most common reasons Netflix does not work on your Roku device is if you’re not connected to the internet. It may sound simple, but there’s always a chance you disconnected accidentally. If you believe that to be the case, follow these steps:

  1. From the home screen, scroll to the Settings menu.
  2. Open the Network section to check your Roku’s connection status.
  3. If it says that you’re connected, use the Check Connection button to test the strength.

If your Roku appears to be humming along just fine, you might find that the problem lies in your router instead. Luckily this is once again an easy fix, and you should be able to reboot your connection in a few minutes. You might also find that your Roku device works better with an Ethernet connection. Restart your Roku

Sometimes the simplest answer really is the right one. In this case, turn your Roku off and turn it back on again. No, seriously. Turn your streaming device off, unplug it and leave it to sit for a minute or so. This should allow your Roku to soft reset — quit out of all of your apps and clear the RAM. Now, plug it back in and fire your Roku right back up. You shouldn’t have problems with Netflix not working now.

Check for updates

Another reason you may not be able to get Netflix to work on your Roku streaming device is if either one needs an update. Some apps tend to act up, especially if you haven’t updated them in a while. Your Roku should check for updates pretty regularly whenever you turn it on, but you can always manually check for them as well. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu from your home screen.
  2. Locate and enter the System option and choose the Software Update selection.
  3. Last, click on the Check Now button. This will check for updates to the Netflix app as well as the Roku system.

How to Fix It When Netflix Won't Work on Roku

This article will walk you through all of the ways to fix when Netflix won't work on Roku. Netflix errors on Roku may appear in one of several different ways:

  • Nothing happens when you select the Netflix icon.
  • Netflix starts to load but freezes on the logo loading screen.
  • When the Netflix app launches only a black screen appears and nothing happens.

Normally, there's no error code and the screen will just freeze either on the logo or the blank screen. The following tips will help you troubleshoot this issue and fix it.

When you use Netflix on Roku, you're dealing with two different online services so there are multiple points of failure. There could be an issue with the Netflix service, with the Roku connection to your TV, or something to do with your internet connection itself.

Because of this, it's important to first verify these services are working. Then move on to checking your Wi-Fi network, your internet connection, and then issues with the Roku streaming player itself.

How to Fix When Netflix Won't Work on Roku

This issue applies to all Roku streaming players including Roku Express, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Ultra, and Roku Streambar.

  1. Troubleshoot the Netflix service itself. The Netflix Help Center page will show the current status of the Netflix service. If Netflix is down, you'll need to wait until they sort the problem.

  2. Make sure your Roku streaming device is properly connected to your TV. To verify that your Roku streaming device is working properly, try launching another service like the Hulu app. If that doesn't work as well, perhaps the Roku needs attention. If the other app does launch, it could just be the Netflix app.

  3. Try performing a full restart on your Roku device. This means completely powering down the Roku streaming device (you may need to fully disconnect the power cable), and then start it up again. Often, a simple restart can resolve most issues when Netflix won't work on Roku.

    If you notice the power light on your Roku device flickering when you plug it in, you could have a faulty power port. Try a different power cable. If the light still flickers, you may need to replace your Roku streaming device.

  4. Make sure the Roku device is connecting to the Wi-Fi network. Check other devices like a computer or smartphone and make sure your Wi-Fi network is working. If it isn't, you'll need to troubleshoot your home Wi-Fi network before Netflix will work properly on your Roku device. If you can't connect anything to your Wi-Fi network, restarting the router usually helps.

  5. Can your Roku device access the Internet? Again, use another computer or smartphone on your network and test your internet connection. If you can't access the internet, you'll need to troubleshoot your home internet connection.

    If you can successfully connect to any other channel on your Roku, then the device can access the internet fine. In this case, you can skip this step and move on to other troubleshooting steps below.

  6. Update the Roku app on your mobile device. Over time, apps can get out of date, especially if you have auto-updates disabled. If you're trying to launch Netflix with your mobile device, this may be why Netflix won't launch. Make sure to update the Roku Android app or the Roku iOS app, depending on which device you own. If Netflix still doesn't work, try completely deleting the Roku app from your Android or iOS and then reinstall it from scratch.

  7. Make sure your Netflix account is still active. If you can log into your Netflix account on other devices, double-check the Netflix profile you're trying to use on Roku still exists. If all else fails, try changing your Netflix account password, and then reconnect your Netflix app on Roku using that new password.

  8. Disable your VPN. If you use a VPN to connect your router or Roku device to the internet, your VPN may be causing connection issues. Disabling your VPN and connecting to the internet directly may resolve your Netflix channel issues.

  9. Troubleshoot if your Roku remote isn't working. You may need to reset the Roku remote and then pair it with your Roku streaming device again. If you can't get your remote to work, try launching the Netflix channel with the Roku mobile app instead.

  10. Check Roku parental controls and make sure that the account you're trying to use isn't blocked from launching the Netflix content that you want to watch. While you're at it, check the Netflix parental control settings for your Netflix account as well.

  11. If all else has failed, you may need to completely reset your Roku streaming device.

    Resetting your Roku device will remove all of your custom settings. When you restart after the reset, you'll also notice that all of your channels are gone. You'll need to re-add them.


  • To log out of Netflix on most newer Roku devices, including Roku 4, 3, Streaming Stick, Express, and Roku TV, open Netflix and choose a profile if prompted. From the menu on the left, select Settings, then select Sign Out > Yes.

  • There's no easy way to change the Netflix user account on Roku, but there's a workaround. Go to your Roku home screen and navigate to My Channels. Highlight the Netflix app and press the star button on your remote. From the editing settings, select Remove Channel. Then, go back to your Roku Home screen, find the Channel Store, and reinstall Netflix using your preferred Netflix account.

  • Finding your "My List" listing on Netflix is the same across any platform with which you access Netflix, including Roku. Launch Netflix, choose a watch profile if prompted, then select My List from the top menu.

Netflix is pulling its app from some older Roku players

(Pocket-lint) - Those with early Roku players will need to upgrade to carry on using the Netflix app - Netflix has said that support for older players will end on 1 December. 

The players affected appear to be some players like the Roku HD and HD-XR (no, we don't have a precise list of devices).

This mostly affects those in the US, where Roku has been popular over a long period of time. Newer players are unaffected by the change so if you've something like a Roku TV, Roku 2, Premiere, Express or Streaming Stick you won't have a problem. 

Roku also makes boxes for Now TV in the UK and, again, these players are not affected. 

Cord Cutters News says that if you can't auto-play the next episode in a season your player will be among those that will lose support. 

According to the information from Netflix, those affected will see an on-screen message. Cord Cutters News suggests yyou will be alerted as follows: "Due to technical limitations, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after December 1st, Please visit for a list of available devices".

Netflix should be on your home screen, but if not, set up Netflix on your Roku, go to Streaming Channels, then Movies & TV. Select Netflix, then Add Channel. Select Netflix.

Last night Netflix started to notify older Roku uses that their Roku Player will lose access to Netflix starting December 1st, Sadly Netflix has not posted a full list of what Roku players are losing support on December 1st, but it seems to be Roku’s like the old Roku HD that still uses the older Netflix app.

UPDATE: A Roku spokesperson confirmed it is only the first two Roku models will no longer support Netflix as of December 1st,

How can you tell if you are on the older Roku Netflix Channel? If your Netflix app does not support autoplay next, you are using a Roku that will be losing access to Netflix. If your Roku is losing Netflix at the start of December 1st you should see a popup warning when you launch Netflix on your Roku.

Here is a message Netflix posted on their website about the change:

Due to technical limitations, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after December 1st, Please visit for a list of available devices.

We can not be sure, but it is very likely the following Roku models will continue to receive updates:

Netflix Roku App Not Working? Here&#;s The Fix!

Found out that the Netflix app for Roku is not working? 

Well, this is a usual problem on Netflix, especially for non-major operating systems like Roku OS. Compared to Android, iOS, and Windows, Roku OS is not that well known unless you use it personally or a tech geek. 

Most of the time, this issue occurs for no reason and goes away after a few minutes. However, if you’ve been dealing with the problem for hours, something could be wrong with your device or Netflix. 

Although we cannot personally diagnose the problem on your end, we’ve listed several methods that we have tested to fix the Netflix app for Roku if it is not working.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the most basic methods and work our way up to more advanced techniques to help you tackle this problem on Roku.

So, without further delays, let’s get started! 

1. Check Netflix Servers. 

For most of our guides, we always recommend users to check the status of the application they are using before making any changes on their end. 

If an application like Netflix is not working, its servers could be experiencing an issue or down for scheduled maintenance. Since server-related issues are not addressable on your end, checking their status prevents you from wasting your time trying out ineffective solutions. 

Now, to check Netflix’s servers, visit their dedicated status page where you can see the current status of the platform.

If the problem is on their end, the best thing to do for now is to wait until Netflix gets everything sorted. 

2. Check and Reset Your Internet.

Given that Netflix is an online platform, it requires a certain speed to enjoy its services without a problem. If the Netflix app for Roku is not working, check your network if it meets the required Mbps internet speed. 

To do this, run a test using to measure your network’s current upload and download speed.

If the result shows that your connection is slower than the required speed, contact your ISP for an upgrade. However, if you have a subscription that is more than Mbps, try restarting your router to refresh the link with your service provider. 

Unplug Router

After the restart, perform another test on your network to check if your connection is now running correctly. If the problem persists, contact your ISP and ask them to fix their service. 

3. Turn Off VPN.

If you are running a VPN on your Roku device or your router, turn it off before accessing Netflix. The platform is known to flag down users who run VPN services to access restricted content in their region. 

Due to licensing issues, Netflix can face legal actions if users can access movies or TV shows that are not supposed to be available in their regions. 

So, disable your VPN if the Netflix app for Roku is not working.

5. Restart Your Roku. 

Your Roku device could have encountered a temporary error and caused other applications not to work correctly. To fix this, we suggest that you restart your Roku device to reload its resources and refresh its operating system.

  2. After that, unplug it from the wall outlet and let it rest for at least a minute.

6. Reinstall Netflix. 

If updating the Netflix app did not work for you, try reinstalling the app on your Roku device. Random errors that occur on the platform may have caused Netflix’s installation files to get corrupted. 

To ensure that you have a working copy of Netflix, delete the app from your device and reinstall it afterward.

Whether you’re now using a friends’ Netflix account, or you just created a new one for a free trial, changing the account is fairly simple on most devices.

How to Change the Netflix User Account on a Roku Device

Unfortunately, Roku doesn’t it make so easy as to simply sign out and sign back in with the new account. There’s actually no native option to log out of your Netflix account on some Roku devices. So, how do you change your Netflix account on a Roku device? We’ll walk you through it step by step in this article.

Quickly Reinstall Netflix

When you delete an app from your device, or in this case a channel from your Roku list, all the data associated with that channel will be lost. This includes login information.

  1. Go to your Roku home screen.
  2. Select the My Channels option.

  4. Highlight the app icon and press the Star key to bring up the editing settings.
  5. Locate and select the Remove Channel option.
  6. Go back to your Roku home screen.
  7. Select the Channel Store option from the left menu.
  8. Find the Netflix channel and reinstall it.
  9. Add new login information and enjoy.

This nine-step process is actually a lot faster than it seems, given the improved responsiveness of Netflix on Roku and the improvement made to the Roku OS concerning navigation.

How to Sign Out of Netflix

Here’s what you can do if you own a Roku smart TV or dongle.

  1. Go to your Roku home screen.
  2. Bring up the Netflix channel.
  3. From the left side Netflix menu select the Settings option.
  4. Select the Sign out option.
  5. Hit Yes to confirm.
  6. Input new Netflix credentials and log in.

Note that this process is the same for all Roku streaming sticks starting with Roku 3.

If for some reason your Netflix interface doesn’t let you see the gear icon or you can’t see the Settings menu, you can input a specific sequence from your remote to access the Netflix settings menu:

Use this sequence with your arrow buttons on your Roku remote: up arrow two times, down arrow two times, left arrow, right arrow, left arrow, right arrow, up arrow four times. This should give you four options:

  1. Sign out
  2. Start Over
  3. Deactivate
  4. Reset

After choosing the Sign Out option you should be able to log into a different Netflix account. Note that you should always use your Roku remote in order to do this. Using your regular TV remote won’t do anything after inputting the sequence.

To change your Netflix user account on a Roku 1 streaming stick, you’ll have to remove Netflix from your account and add it back again, as with the first method presented in this article.

  1. Use the Home button to get to the Roku home screen.
  2. Select the Settings option.
  3. Go to Netflix Settings.
  4. Select the Deactivate this player from my Netflix account option.
  5. Hit the Yes button to confirm.
  6. Reactivate Netflix and use the new sign-in credentials.

This will apply to Roku 2 LT, XS, and XD streaming sticks:

  1. Use the Home button to get to the Roku home screen.
  2. Highlight the Netflix app from the channel list.
  3. Press the Star button on your Roku remote to bring up the settings menu.
