3DS Firmware 11.15.0-47 Released, CFW seems unimpacted
Nintendo have pushed firmware 11.15.0-47 for the 3DS/New3DS systems. The update appears to be a minor one that does not break Custom Firmware functionality, but this is pending 100% confirmation from the scene.
In particular, it does feels off to get an update in the middle of the year, when the 3DS had entered a “maintenance only” cycle, with updates happening only toward the end of the year since 2018.
The previous firmware update was 11.14.0-46, in November last year.
Nintendo 3DS Firmware 11.15.0-47 – what’s new
The official changelog, currently only to be found on the JP page, roughly translates as the usual “stability improvement” change.
- Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.
Nintendo 3DS Firmware 11.15.0-47 – Impact on custom firmware
People have confirmed that Custom Firmware still seem to work correctly, with multiple 3DS scene members reporting that Luma3DS 10.2.1 still works fine.
It is said that the changes are mostly in the Internet Browser, to account for updates in SSL modules and certificates. This could certainly be a routine update (SSL certificates need to be refreshed semi regularly), but we can’t totally dismiss the possibility that some Browser vulnerabilities may have been fixed in the process. Nevertheless, it appears the update is harmless for CFW users.

3DS News: Nintendo releases Firmware 11.14.0 patching BrowserHax & Luma3DS updated with support for this version!
Despite the Nintendo 3DS nearing its 10th birthday and being fully discontinued last September, Nintendo decided to surprise us all and push an update for the console with version number 11.14.0. In this article, we’re going to look at what this update does together with a Luma3DS update intended to add support for it!
Nintendo releases Firmware 11.14.0 for the Nintendo 3DS
Despite nearing its 10th birthday, the 3DS still managed to get yet another update which broke Luma3DS & BrowserHax in one fell swoop!
Earlier this week, Nintendo went ahead and released Firmware 11.14.0 for the Nintendo 3DS, coming just under a year after the release of Firmware 11.13.0 in December 2019. Following the trend established with Firmware 9.7.0, released in April 2015, this just-released update doesn’t seem to bring much in terms of functionality with Nintendo only providing a partly sentence-long change log stating: “Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience”.
That being said, it has been confirmed that Firmware 11.14.0 patches the 2020 BrowserHax exploit which was used as a quick & easy way to hack Firmware 11.13.0. As a result, this leaves those on Firmware 11.14.0 with only one method of software hacking namely Seedminer. Furthermore, if you intend to use BrowserHax on older supported firmwares, you might face the update nag when opening the browser which may complicate the hacking process.
Luma3DS 10.2.1 released with Firmware 11.14.0 support & more
Luma3DS is now working on the latest 3DS firmware again 🙂
As usual, when a new firmware update is released, some community members rush to update their console to check whether their preferred CFW is still working and this time is no different. However, this time around, the result was that Luma3DS no longer worked on Firmware 11.14.0 despite most recent 3DS updates not breaking compatibility. Thankfully, this hiccup was swiftly fixed with TuxSH releasing Luma3DS 10.2.1 hours after Firmware 11.14.0’s release with it including support for this new firmware & some other stuff namely:
- Download Play functionality now works even when you’re out-of-region
- An issue in which the Rosalina Menu wouldn’t pop up during application launch has been fixed
You may grab Luma3DS 10.2.1 by following the link below and if you want to check out Nintendo’s partly change log, links are also provided for your pleasure. For those curious about what files changed in Firmware 11.14.0, the usual yls8 reports are available and ready to be checked out with titles being updated including the Internet Browser and ‘friends’ system module among others.

Thoroughly read all of the introductory pages (including this one!) before proceeding.
The latest system software version is currently 11.15.0-47. If you have installed CFW in the past, it is highly recommended to follow Checking for CFW to make sure your custom firmware is up-to-date.
What is custom firmware?
Custom firmware (“CFW”) is a full software modification to your 3DS, comparable to “administrator access” on a computer. It allows you to do anything that the 3DS is physically capable of doing, rather than being limited by whatever Nintendo allows you to do.
Popular uses for custom firmware include:
- Bypassing the region lock, allowing you to play games from other regions
- Home menu customization, using community-created themes and badges
- Modification of games (“ROM hacks”) through LayeredFS
- Save data editing, backup, and restore
- Emulation of older consoles, as well as native playback of DS and GBA games
- Installing your physical cartridges for digital use
What does this guide install?
This guide will install boot9strap + Luma3DS custom firmware on unmodified/stock 3DS/2DS devices. If you have installed custom firmware in the past, you should follow these instructions to find the correct upgrade path for your console. A modern, boot9strap/Luma3DS-based setup is preferred over older setups (arm9loaderhax, menuhax) because it is more stable for modern homebrew and continues to be supported by the community.
What do I need to know before starting?
- While the risks of bricking have been minimized over the years, we are not responsible for anything that goes wrong with your device. Incorrect file placement will not brick your device, but reckless behavior might.
- This guide will work on every retail device in the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles (including the New 3DS series and the 2DS), regardless of region or firmware.
- Following this guide alone should not result in data loss, but SD card corruption is always a possibility. You should make a backup of your SD card contents if you have important data.
- You will need a working SD card in your 3DS, as well as the ability to write files to the SD card. The 3DS can read SD cards formatted as MBR/FAT32.
