I'd really like to make the leap into playing with a laser cutter - and there are a million (ok, maybe not a MILLION) of them on EBAY in the 500-600 range. But reading reviews, doing a bit of light research, watching some youtube videos, there's not a lot of info about how to really get started with these things if you're brandy-new to laser cutting. Ben's done a couple videos that involve laser cutting, and is constantly using it in his projects, but what I'd REALLY like is a sort of "getting started with a cheap EBAY laser cutter" video, or even a whole series. Maybe something where Ben buys one of those super-common 500-600 range laser cutters, gets it up and running, explains how the software for them works (because they all seem to want to use Corel Draw from what I've read, but using something like Inkscape would probably be a lot more flexible), and how to get the "most" out of them, given their limitations.
Other things that would be really interesting:
1. What other kinds of software can be used with these el-cheapo laser cutters? See aforementioned Inkscape (or Illustrator?)
2. What simple upgrades/improvements should be made to them to keep them running reliably or improve their performance
3. How "hackable" are they? I.e., after buying one could it be torn apart and the build size increased?

I've used my fair share of nice name brand lasers as well as cheap so-Chinese-they-don't-have-a-name-brand lasers. They're all a little different. The Chinese ones usually come with their own crappy software and there usually isn't an alternative other than possibly using Corel Draw. Usually what you have to do is design in different software and figure out what format is ideal(usually .dxf) to save as and import your design file into the crappy software to send it to the laser. [This can be a serious pain as different design elements can export and import differently. Our laser uses .dxf or Illustrator 8 files, but still inconsistently.]
No matter what they tell you, all lasers needs some sort of ventilation. So assume you'll need to set up a fan and duct system and cut a whole in an exterior wall. I've never tested it, but it might be possible to use a very fine filter to avoid exhausting outside, though I've never seen this done successfully.
The cheap lasers will have an advertised wattage, but sometimes they don't actually operate at that power. Our hackerspace 50w laser only operates at 32w with a new tube. The power level of the tube determines how thick of material you will be able to cut through.
To help your laser last longer,
- Carefully clean the mirrors and lenses regularly.
- Don't run your laser at full power. Keep it to 80-90% as it should lengthen the life of your laser tube.
- To extend the life of your servo motors, mind your speed when etching. The laser head travels back and forth quickly having to ramp up and slow down at either end. If you're etching a small area, you may want to decrease your speed so that the rapid start and stop motion of the servos doesn't wear on them as much.
Lasers are hackable, or you can buy a kit and build one from scratch. I just visited Dallas Makerspace and they have a laser with a decent sized bed that was built from scratch.
Something to consider, the focus range of a laser is quite small so the axis need to be very level and very square. If they are not, you will get uneven cuts or areas that will simply not cut through. The focus area of a weak(<60w) laser can be less than 1/4". When building a DIY unit, it is very easy to have the height difference of your axis be off that small amount.
Laser cheat: If you have a weaker laser and want to cut through material thicker than what your laser can handle, sometimes you can refocus the z-axis so that it is not focused to the top of your material as you would normally focus, but raise the z-axis so that the laser is focused on the center of the material. You'd have to eyeball this typically, but I've had it work often for me. This is typically done on a second pass. This technique may yield a larger kerf.
Note: If a laser says it can cut through 1/4" material, that doesn't always mean ANY 1/4" material. Solid lumber is easier to cut through than plywood because plywood contains glue, which is harder to cut through. Likewise, MDF or hardboard can be harder to cut through because it also contains glue. So if you can cut through 1/4" bass wood, you may not be able to cut through 1/4" MDF.

Thanks for the response! Something I'm really curious if you know how these lasers are "driven". I know that, for example, my 3D printer uses GCODE that's sent serially (ok, USB but acting as a serial connection), but I'm curious if there's any info out there about how these lasers are typically driven. My suspicion is that they're driven like a printer - so something like a printer driver is actually handling the communication. So it'd be proprietary, and short of decompiling the driver or otherwise reverse engineering the protocol, there probably isn't much out there.

The likes of the Spirit GE uses a printer driver. It's actually more like a pen plotter driver as it uses the different 'pens' to do different types of cut allowing you to set different speed and power for cutting versus engraving operations. If you draw the design in Corel Draw then you use different line colours to denote the different types of cut you want which are then defined in the printer driver.

A lot of the lasers I've seen use software that is setup like a printer driver. I'm not extremely knowledgable about computer hardware/software, so I can't help much more than that.
Dave is correct, with all the lasers I've used, you can set vectors(lines) to different colors that allow you to apply custom speed, power, and etch/cut settings to each color. But if you're going to run layers at different settings all in one "print" make sure you test a small area of whatever material will be used for the final product with each setting first to ensure you get the desired results before you spend the time and material to do the full job.

To be honest I always search for a cheap product by - maybe a prejudice - I don't search o ebay. Recently I had sponsored by GearBest for a bunch of things in support to the PiIoT kit from Element14 for the challenge. Together with a hundred of steppers they sent me too a 2.5 A laser engraver/cutter. I have already published the instructable GearBest laser engraver DIY Kit assembly instructions on how to assemble and setup it and to be honest it is cheaper than the range of 500-600 $ but it is - in its simplicity - very well done. I confirm that the laser has itw own cooler fan controlled by the board.No way to have it working for a long time without. For detailed usage of the laser engraver / cutter (this is not super-power but you can consider is as a good example respecting the fundamental principles of this kind of tools) you can follow the further posts on the PiIoT Challenge.

Again. I try to answer to your second part of the questions, the software. The laser engravers, as well as the 3D printer, CNC machined etc. are managed by a micro controller board that accept in its firmware a g-code dialect. I mean dialect because in this particular case of CAD tools there are some specific commands typical of the laser control. First of all there is no x axis that is replaced by the laser lens focus. Then there are commands to control the laser continuously or by pulse, depending on the depth and the kind of job you are doing, the material etc. Then there are G-code controls like the laser to very-low-power for positioning, laser fan activation etc.
So there is not a single software you can use and the format, DXF instead of SVG, AI or other vectorial file formats or bitmap images (jpeg, png, bmp) in the case you need to make a variable depth engraving, using greyscale images or pure monochrome - black and white -
What you need is a software able to manage these kind of files, give you a good quality resulting image in g-code format to export it and send to the machine. I suggest software like Artcam if you are doing mostly graphic elements but Inskcape or Gimp (both are open source and work very well on all the platforms) are also a good alternative.
So there are two different software level:
- The graphic processing of the image
- The machine control software.
Currently I am using Brenbox for the machine control but it is almost crap and is a temporary solution. The graphic objects are created with the mentioned programs and other (including Rhino 4, Phtoshop CS5 etc.) then the export formats are those mentioned above.
An approach that I consider interesting is a project I am working on where you can control the machine with a Raspberry PI and a java application. It acts as a server that can be accessed by the network directly from your pc from where you export the original image in G-Code format.
To do this I am making a porting / hacking of the universal g-code sender almost oriented to control laser machines.

Wow...now THAT might be exactly what I'm looking for.
In a general way - I wasn't really just thinking of Ebay as a place to look. It just seems like there are a LOT of the same model of laser cutter/engraver running around that is sourced from China. Ebay happens to be the cheapest (from what I can see) source of such things.
That being said, this kit looks AWESOME. Also, it looks very "hackable" in the sense that increasing the dimensions of the cuttable/engraveable area is largely a matter of getting longer rails. I'm guessing that if it was to get TOO big, the steppers would need to be upgraded with larger/stronger motors - which would probably mean increasing the power supply to those steppers. But anyway.
Definitely going to look more at this one...you may have found the winner!
[Paul de Groot] wrote in to let us know about a drop-in controller replacement he designed for those economical K40 laser engravers that are everywhere on eBay. With the replacement controller, greatly improved engraving results are possible along with a simplified toolchain. Trade in the proprietary software and that clunky security dongle for Inkscape and a couple of plugins! [Paul] felt that the work he accomplished was too good to keep to himself, and is considering a small production run.
Laser engravers are in many ways not particularly complex devices; a motion controller moves the head in x and y, and the laser is turned on or off when needed. But of course, the devil is in the details and there can be a surprising amount of stuff between having a design on your screen and getting it cut or engraved in the machine. Designing in Inkscape, exporting to DXF, importing the DXF to proprietary software (which requires a USB security dongle to run), cleaning up any DXF import glitches, then finally cutting the job isn’t unusual. And engraving an image with varying shades and complex dithering? The hardware may be capable, but the stock software and controller? Not so much. It’s easy to see why projects to replace the proprietary controllers and software with open-source solutions have grown.
Cheap laser engravers may come with proprietary controllers and software, but they don’t need to stay that way. Other efforts we have seen in this area include LaserWeb, which provides a browser-based interface to a variety of open-source motion controllers like Grbl or Smoothieware. And if you’re considering a laser engraver, take a few minutes to learn from the mistakes of other people.

Ammeter add-on was on my to do list for a long time. It’s important to know what current is flowing thru your CO2 tube so you don’t shorten it’s life. Ammeter measures current and in case of this SH-G350 machine you’ll want ammeter rated in the 0-30 or 0-50mA range because most CO2 laser tubes run under currents under 25mA.
There’s extremely high voltages inside laser cutters! It can kill you in an instant. Power off and UNPLUG your machine from AC outlet before doing anything and wait for a while (at least an hour) as power supply may retain deadly voltage in the capacitors even after you unplugged it. I will not be held responsible for anything that might happen to you, so please only do this at your own risk. Also I’m not an expert and don’t have electrical engineering degree so anything I say in this article could be wrong.
Please keep in mind that by making modification to your laser machine you most likely will void any warranty you might have.
And final warning. If you do use hole saw, you’ll probably have “extra” opening not covered by your ammeter. At least that’s what happened to me. I covered it with some tape for now, but you might want to cut some plug/cover later on…
I highly suggest to get an analog ammeter rather then digital one. Digital ammeters are really cool, however they require separate power source (usually 5V). But that’s not a big issue. Problem with digital ammeters that they are slow so you might not even see change in current if laser pulse is short. Analog ammeters show current changes in real time.
I bought a really cheap SMAKN 85C1-A DC 0-50mA ammeter on Amazon. It might be out of stock at this time, but they are pretty much the same. Just pick a DC (not AC) one in the 0-50mA range, as it will never go over 30mA mark anyway.

Step 1: Prep
Find a suitable place for ammeter. Make sure there’s nothing that’s already in the machine behind that space. On my SH-G350 I had plenty of empty space in the front top region so that’s where I decided to install it.
Triple check that machine is unplugged and there’s no residual voltage left in power supply.
Cover power supplies, etc. inside from getting metal shavings. These might cause shorts and all kind of damage if they get inside electronics. I used paper towels to cover power supply.
Step 2: The thrill of drill
There are few options to attach ammeter. Some choose to make enclosure for it and attach to the outside of the case. This is non-destructive method. I decided to permanently install meter by drilling several holes in the metal of the laser cutter’s case.
If you inspect back of the ammeter (assuming yours is same as mine), you will see a long stem with 2 screw posts where you will connect wires, as well as 2 more mounting screw posts.
I chose to drill big hole for the “stem” and two smaller ones for the mounting screws. Unfortunately stem is oval in shape, so if you drill round hole it will leave some opening that will be visible when ammeter is installed. That’s the sacrifice you’ll have to make 🙂 Alternatively you can drill several smaller holes and file them down until they match shape of the stem.
Pre-drill small pilot hole (optional but recommended). Then using your 1.5″ hole saw with pilot bit attached, drill big hole.
Some tips. Add cutting oil on the saw teeth first, it will make drilling faster and will do less damage to your hole saw. Make breaks to let saw cool down a little and remove metal shavings. If your saw is dull it will take really long time…
After big hole is drilled, you might want to deburr sharp edges with file. Mark spots for drilling smaller mounting holes. I put some acrylic white paint on tips of the ammeter’s mounting posts and positions it in the hole, making marks with paint on the metal. Or use any other measuring tools like calipers to find where holes should be.
Pick a drill bit slightly larger than mounting screw posts and drill at marked locations.
Now try and see if ammeter fits inside. In my case it didn’t because stem was slightly wider in two places. I used round file to elongate hole until meter fitted.
Use vacuum cleaner to clean the mess you created and carefully remove paper towel from insides of the machine.
Step 3: Wiring
Wiring is actually not that difficult. You will place ammeter on NEGATIVE wire. Without ammeter negative wire goes from Power supply to the Negative terminal (cathode) of the CO2 tube. What you are going to do is cut this wire and splice ammeter between both ends of “cut” wire. Current will be going thru CO2 tube’s cathode, into ammeter 1st terminal, and then out of it’s second terminal and finally into power supply. This is shown on the rough schematic below:
Ammeter’s terminals usually have some kind of marking. If you see “-” sign near one it means that end goes to power supply, and other goes to CO2 tube’s cathode. But if you accidentally reverse polarity, ammeter’s arrow will jump to negative space (below 0) and as long as you send very low current you probably won’t damage it.
Hope this makes sense.
Now let’s make physical connections. Find place where negative wire from PSU spliced with wire going to CO2 tube’s cathode and cut it somewhere there, but you’ll most likely want to have a longer piece of wire coming from PSU because it needs to reach ammeter which attached in the front. But no worries if it’s too short, then you’ll just need to solder extra piece of wire (don’t use wire thinner than 20 awg) long enough to reach ammeter’s negative lead.
Don’t forget to use a piece of heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape to insulate that joint.
Place a washer that came with ammeter in to negative post. Take negative wire from PSU (with optional extension), strip the end, and wind around ammeter’s negative post. Insert second washer on top. Then insert spring washer and finally screw in nut until wire is held securely.
Now cut of good thick wire (I used 14 AWG speaker wire), and cut it so it can reach all the way from ammeter to the wire connected to CO2 tube’s cathode. Attach it to remaining terminal of the ammeter just like wire from PSU.
Strip second end and solder to the wire coming from CO2 tube’s cathode. Cover joint with electrical tape or heat-shrink tubing.
Step 4: Pre-Test
Before permanently attaching ammeter, make sure that you wired it correctly and polarity is not reversed. Put it somewhere securely so it’s terminals are not touching anything.
Set laser min/max to smallest possible power setting at which your machine fires. On mine it was 10%. Do a pulse and see which direction arrow on the ammeter moves. If it tries to move below zero, you wired it in reverse. If that’s the case unplug machine, wait for PSU to discharge and fix wiring issue by swapping wires on ammeter’s terminals.
Step 5: Finish installation and final test.
Unplug machine and wait for power to dissipate from PSU.
Install ammeter using mounting screw posts, washers and nuts. I used needle-nose pliers to tighten nuts.
Now test your machine and check which current you get at each power setting. Do not go above 20mA if you still have factory tube (50W machines actually come with 40W CO2 tubes).

I didn’t go over 80% because my tube can’t handle it.
So I ordered a laser and I went big! I had been looking for a CO2 laser for a few months on settled on a 60 Watt, it seemed like middle ground between too weak and too strong. I could not be happier. I have successfully etched glass, acrylic, many woods, ceramic cups. powder coated stainless steel tumblers and more to come.

- This is 60 Watt CO2 Laser operating in the 10600nm wavelength. Commonly called the X700 or Redsail there are many clones of this. It is controlled by a RDC6442G-B (EC) Laser DSP Controller that works with RDWorks8 Software (included on the CD).
- About $1800.00 plus $150.00 for Residential Delivery. Residential delivery is a separate item you will need to purchase for a truck that comes with a lift gate.
1 each Vevor 110V 60Hz CW-5200DG Industrial Water Chiller for CO2 Laser Tube or search “CO2 Laser Chiller”
- The laser comes with a tub with no lid and a large aquarium pump. I didn’t like that option so I ordered an industrial chiller. You can opt for a 3000 of 5200 model, I purchased a 5200.
- NOTE: You will need spare fuses for the Chiller.10 amp 250v fuse 5x20mm I bought a large pack, I am up to 15 amp and holding strong. The fuse is locate at inside the plug in the back. Lock close, it pulls out with a flat head screwdriver.
- Needs to be set to 30C or below to prevent laser degredation. I run at 16C.

- The laser comes with a loud and inefficient Exhaust Fan.. this will quiet things down.

- My lense was damaged but was replaced by warranty quickly. I bought a few spares.
3 each Spare CO2 Laser Si Mirror 25mm Mirror
1.5 Gallons of Distilled Water from my local Safeway
1/4 Teaspoon Dawn Dishwashing Soap to prevent bubbling in the laser tube
1 cap Regular Unscented Bleach to prevent Algae and microbe growth
3-4 Weeks of Waiting.
You will also need 4 110V plug ins.
Arrival and Preparation:
The laser arrived in a solidly built plywood box. It was relatively easy to open. The laser is secured to the bottom pallet with 4 long angry screws. Once removed you can roll it off the pallet. It will require someone strong to help, you have to get the hose out from under the machine.
The laser has 4 heavy duty wheels which make it easy to roll around. When in place, you screw down 4 rubber stoppers to prevent movement.
The delivery was on time
The driver lowered it with the drop bed and rolled it into my Garage with a pallet jack.
Pretty cool but also heavy. I broke out the crow bar.
Lots of goodies packed inside.
The tub is actually the water basis that you are expected to use.

This is a quick and dirty list for setup. I will expand with more detail soon.
Unbolt 4 screws on leveling pads.. 8mm socket
Loosen leveling pads with 26mm wrench
Remove two big blue hoses by lifting one side.. heavy lift, bring a friend.
Lift one edge to remove box fan.
Keys are tied with ribbon inside lid
Laser carriage is tied with ribbon.. Remove ribbon and remove box
Remove 4 screws, loosen 4 to remove paper on viewing window x 2
Unbox air compressor.. Test by plugging in directly to wall
Unbox fan, Test by plugging in directly to wall
3 hoses, 1 for air 2 for water, in out
Chiller fill and prime and turn on, set. Chiller will blow fuses if in a hot area
Zipties to connect water and air lines rather than hose clamps
Ground your laser.
Check lenses, mirrors, belt guides (especially down low in the back) for tightness.
Clean lenses and mirros with Lense Cleaning Wipes
Laser alignment –
With laser turned on, use tape or post-it notes and press pulse. Sometimes you will not see the hole, look close after each shot. The longer you hold pulse, the longer the laser will burn.
This is a pain and takes patience. More details coming shortly.
Start with lense closest to laser tube verify center plus or minus 4mm
Lense 2.. center as best as possible at near and far settings
Lense 3.. dead nuts near and far for all corners. The more test shots the better
Lense 4 – laser head vertical alignment… laser needs to be shooting straight down, you can use a square to verify laser head alignment.
Straight line on test piece of 3mm wood to determine best kerf. Wood should be sitting 3mm piece of wood on one end like a ramp.
Laser should be bright when cutting
Laser works RDworks from CD.
- Power setting 1 and 2 should be the same
- Need to adjust diameter in user settings when using rotary.
