The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides monthly benefits that help eligible low-income households buy the food they need for good health. For most households, SNAP funds account for only a portion of their food budgets; they must also use their own funds to buy enough food to last throughout the month. Eligible households can receive food assistance through regular SNAP or through the Louisiana Combined Application Project (LaCAP).

SNAP participants may also meet the income eligibility guidelines for nutrition services through the Women, Infants & Children Program (WIC) offered by the Louisiana Department of Health.

Qualifying for Regular SNAP

To get benefits through regular SNAP, households must meet certain tests, including resource and income tests.

Resources: Individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or households including anyone who receives Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP), Kinship Care Subsidy Program (KCSP), or Strategies to Empower People (STEP) Program benefits are exempt from the resource limit. Households not exempt from the resource limit may have up to $2250 in resources, such as a bank account, cash, certificate of deposit (CDs), stocks, and bonds. Non-exempt households that include at least one household member who is age 60 or older or includes a disabled member may have up to $3500 in resources.

Households are not exempt from the resource limit if:

  • Any member is disqualified for Intentional Program Violation, or
  • The household is disqualified for failing to comply with work registration requirements.

The following individuals are not exempt from the resource limit:

  • An ineligible alien,
  • An ineligible student,
  • An individual who is disqualified for failure to comply with work registration requirements,
  • An individual who is disqualified for failure to provide or apply for a social security number, and
  • An individual who is on strike.

Income: Households must meet income tests (unless any member is receiving FITAP, KCSP, STEP benefits, or all members are receiving SSI).

Most households must meet both the gross and net income tests, but a household with a person who is 60 years old or older or a person who is receiving certain types of disability payments only has to meet the net income test.

Gross income means a household's total, non-excluded income, before any deductions have been made. Net income means gross income minus allowable deductions. Households, except those noted, that have income over the amounts listed below cannot get SNAP benefits.

Allotment Amounts: The amount of SNAP a household receives depends on the number of people in the SNAP household and the amount of their net income. The table below shows the maximum SNAP allotments by household size.

Other Eligibility Requirements

  • Identity - Individuals must show proof they are the person they claim to be. Applicants must provide proof of their identity.
  • Residence - the client must be living in Louisiana.
  • Citizenship - household members can include either US citizens and/or certain aliens with verifiable USCIS documentation.
  • Enumeration - households must provide or apply for Social Security numbers for each member before certification.
  • Work Registration - all able-bodied adults, with specific exceptions, must register for work and accept suitable employment

Qualifying for LACAP

LaCAP is a food assistance program for Louisiana residents who are at least 60 years of age and receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). It is a simplified version of SNAP. If you are eligible for LaCAP, you will receive a Louisiana Purchase Card and SNAP benefits will be automatically deposited into your account every month. There are three standard allotment amounts in LaCAP. Depending on shelter costs, LaCAP participants will receive $35, $82, or $173. LaCAP cases are certified for 36 months.

You may be eligible for LaCAP if you are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and you:

  • Are age 60 or older,
  • Are not institutionalized or otherwise ineligible for SNAP benefits due to immigration status, or an Intentional Program Violation.
  • Live alone or buy and prepare your food separately or agree to buy and prepare your food separately from the other people who live with you, and
  • Are not living with your spouse or own child who is under 22 years of age.

Applying for LaCAP

Two ways:

After DCFS receives your application,you will be assigned a worker who will determine your eligibility.  DCFS will send you a letter within 30 days of the date we receive your enrollment form to let you know if you are eligible or not. If you are eligible, the letter will also tell you the amount of your benefits and when they will begin.

Other Options

Seniors receiving SSI who need food assistance do not have to use LaCAP.

Food assistance is available through LaCAP or through regular SNAP. If you receive benefits through LaCAP and you want to change to regular SNAP, you can do so at any time.

You may qualify for more benefits through regular SNAP if you:

  • Pay more than $35 per month in out-of-pocket medical expenses, or
  • Pay more than $569 per month for shelter costs.

Applying for SNAP Benefits

Step One:

How are My Benefits Issued?

Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is a method of delivering governmental benefits to recipients electronically.  Louisiana uses magnetic stripe card technology.  The card, which is referred to as the Louisiana Purchase Card enables recipients to access benefits at Point-of-Sale (POS) machines.

SNAP benefits are posted to recipients' accounts during the first fourteen days of the month. Recipient benefits are accessible by 5:00 a.m. the morning after they are posted. Benefits are posted on the same date every month regardless of the day of the week. Holidays and weekends do not affect the date of benefit availability. In emergency situations, benefits are available immediately.

Benefits are secure and accessible only to persons authorized by the recipient. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) is selected by the recipient and must be correctly entered in order to successfully complete all electronic transactions.  As purchases are made at grocery store checkout lanes, recipient accounts are debited and the recipient is given a receipt that provides the remaining account balance.

Eligible Food Items

Households CAN use SNAP benefits to buy:

  • Foods for the household to eat, such as:
    • breads and cereals;
    • fruits and vegetables;
    • meats, fish and poultry; and
    • dairy products.
  • Seeds and plants that produce food for the household to eat.

Households CANNOT use SNAP benefits to buy:

  • Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco;
  • Any nonfood items, such as:
    • pet foods;
    • soaps, paper products; and
    • household supplies.
  • Vitamins and medicines;
  • Food that will be eaten in the store;
  • Hot foods.

In general, food products that contain alcohol or tobacco, items that are not intended for human consumption (e.g. paper products, pet foods, etc.), vitamins and supplements, and foods sold hot at the point-of-sale, are not eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits.

Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The USDA provides nutrition assistance to those most affected by a disaster or emergency. When the State of Louisiana notifies the USDA of the types and quantities of food that relief organizations need for emergency feeding operations, supplies are provided to disaster relief organizations such as the Red Cross and the Salvation Army for mass feeding or household distribution. The USDA also authorizes States to provide D-SNAP benefits if certain conditions are met.

Your Rights Regarding SNAP

You have the right to:

  • Receive an application when you ask for it.
  • Turn in your application the same day you receive it.
  • Receive your SNAP benefits (or be notified that you are not eligible for the program) within 30 days after you turn in your application.
  • Receive SNAP benefits within 7 days if you are eligible and have little or no money.
  • Have a fair hearing if you disagree with any action taken on your case.
In accordance with Federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, the USDA, its Agencies, offices, and employees, and institutions participating in or administering USDA programs are prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, religious creed, disability, age, political beliefs, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA.

Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication for program information (e.g. Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language, etc.), should contact the Agency (State or local) where they applied for benefits. Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339. Additionally, program information may be made available in languages other than English.

To file a program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form (AD-3027) or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form. SNAP Historical Information

This program was established by Congress in 1964 by PL 88-55 which was superseded by the Food Stamp Act of 1977 and subsequent amendments to the Act.  It is administered at the federal level by the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Food and Nutrition Service and at the state level by the Department of Children & Family Services.

Besides certification and issuance activities, the Food Security Act of 1985 mandated that employment and training services be provided for SNAP recipients who are mandatory work registrants.  The employment and training activities, known as the Louisiana Job Employment Training (LaJET) Program, are accomplished through the cooperative efforts of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the DCFS parish offices, (in parishes where available) local governing authorities in the State and the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996, which was signed into law on August 22, 1996, implemented many changes in SNAP, including a limit on the number of months certain persons can receive SNAP benefits without working.

DSNAP EBT Cards

When should I expect my DSNAP card, and what do I do if it doesn't arrive?

If you listed a physical address for your DSNAP EBT card, your card can take 3-5 Business Days for delivery. DSNAP cards are being delivered by U.S. Postal Service. Due to the heavy volume, the card may be delayed. 

If you listed a P.O. Box for your DSNAP EBT card, it is being delivered by regular mail delivery, which can take up to 7-10 business days for delivery.

NOTE: The DSNAP EBT card will be sent separately from your benefits approval letter.

If you don't receive your card in your expected timeframe, please contact our LAHelpU Customer Service Center at 1-888-524-3578 or [email protected]

You can call LAHelpU from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., M-F, except on holidays. To speak with a customer service representative, select your language, then press option 6 and listen for the appropriate prompt. Tip: Call volumes are lightest in the first and last hours of the day.

If you send an email, provide your name as it appears in our records, your contact information, date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number. You should also include a brief description of your situation and reason for writing, as well as a descriptive subject line. Our staff will respond as quickly as possible, but they receive a great volume of requests. Please allow at least three or four business days for a response.

My DSNAP card has a $0 balance when I call. What's going on?

This could happen for a couple of reasons:

(1) You must activate the card after you receive it for the balance to become available to you. The automated system will not tell you the balance on your card until the card has been activated. For information on how to activate your card, read “How do I activate my EBT card for DSNAP?” below.

(2) If you have an EBT card for another program (such as P-EBT, or a card from an old or denied SNAP case), when you call the EBT Customer Service Center to activate your DSNAP EBT card, you must make sure you enter the 16-digit card number from the DSNAP card. If you enter only your personal information (SSN, DOB, ZIP), the system may pull up your P-EBT or old SNAP account instead of your DSNAP account. For more information on how to activate your card, read “How do I activate my EBT card for DSNAP?” below.

If neither of these reasons applies, please call the LAHelpU Customer Service Center at 1-888-524-3578 to speak with someone about your case.

How do I activate my EBT card for DSNAP?

To activate your DSNAP EBT card, call the EBT customer service line at 1-888-997-1117, enter your 16-digit card number, and then listen for the option to select or reset your PIN. To set your PIN, you will need the last four digits of the Social Security number, date of birth and zip code for the mailing address of the Head of Household.

If the Head of Household did not provide a Social Security number during the DSNAP application process, the cardholder will need to call the LAHelpU Customer Service Center at 1-888-524-3578 to get the number needed to set the PIN and activate the DSNAP EBT card.

NOTE: If you have an EBT card for another program (such as P-EBT, or a card from an old or denied SNAP case), you must first enter the 16-digit card number from your DSNAP EBT card before setting your PIN. Otherwise, the system may pull up your P-EBT or old SNAP account instead of your DSNAP account.

PIN Options:

Please note that PINs selected with any of the below patterns are not allowed:

  • Identical digits (1111, 2222, 3333, etc.)
  • Consecutive digits (1234, 2345, 3456, etc.)

What do I do if I lost my DSNAP card?

Call the LAHelpU Customer Service Center at 1-888-524-3578 to report your card lost and request a new one.

General EBT Info

When are SNAP benefits loaded onto EBT cards?

SNAP (food stamp) benefits are posted to the recipient's account during the first 14 days of the month. Recipient benefits are accessible by 5:00 a.m. the morning after they are posted. When will my next benefit be deposited into my account?

A benefit schedule for SNAP is provided in the Program Info section of the LifeInCheck EBT mobile app. Go to "My Account," then click "Benefits Schedule."

PLEASE NOTE: The "Benefits Schedule" in the app is for regular SNAP benefits only. Other benefits, such as Supplemental SNAP or P-EBT, are issued on a different schedule. REMEMBER: Do not write your PIN on your card or on anything else you carry in your wallet or purse, in case it is lost or stolen. Choose a PIN that is easy for you to remember, but hard for someone else to guess or figure out, in case you lose your card.

PIN Freeze After 3 Bad PIN Attempts:

After three bad PIN attempts, your account will freeze. Please know that your PIN will reset at midnight and you can attempt to use your card again or reset your PIN at that time.

What do I do if my EBT card is lost, stolen or damaged and I need to request a replacement?

If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, cancel your card immediately. You may request a new replacement card after you have canceled your current card. You can do this in one of 3 ways:

  • Mobile: Log into the LifeInCheck EBT mobile app and select the "My Account" icon on the bottom right of the screen. There will be a list of options available including one to deactivate or cancel your card and request a new replacement card.
  • Web: Go to www.LifeInCheckEBT.com and select the "Card Management" tab on the top of the screen. This will bring you to a screen where you can cancel your card and request a new replacement card.
  • Phone:  Call the EBT customer service line at 1-888-997-1117 and listen for the option to report your card as lost, stolen or damaged.

Will I be able to use my benefits while I'm waiting for my replacement card to arrive?

Unfortunately, you will be unable to use your benefits until you receive your new replacement card and select a PIN. After a new PIN is selected, your new card is activated and your previous balance and transaction information will be available on the new card.

What do I do if my balance is incorrect?

Follow these steps:

  • Sign into the web portal at www.LifeInCheckEBT.com or use the LifeInCheck EBT mobile app to view your most recent transactions and verify the transactions are correct.
  • If you have a concern about a specific transaction, call the EBT customer service line at 1-888-997-1117 to file a disputed charge.

Where can I use my EBT card?

You can use your EBT card anywhere in the U.S. that accepts SNAP EBT cards. The SNAP Retailer Locator allows anyone to locate nearby SNAP-authorized retailers by entering a street address, city, and state, or zip code. Enter your starting location and select a retailer or map point to get details and directions.

How do I use my EBT card at the store?

You can use your EBT card at any SNAP-approved retailer to buy eligible food (see below for eligible food listing) with your SNAP or P-EBT benefits. Locate a SNAP retailer with this interactive tool.

If you also have cash benefits, you can use the benefits to buy food and non-food items, or get cash back.

At checkout, swipe your EBT card through the machine. If you receive both SNAP and cash benefits on your EBT card, be sure to select the correct payment type when your card is swiped. The State cannot correct this after the transaction is complete and you have left the store. Follow the directions on the machine to enter your PIN. Always check your receipt to make sure the amount of the EBT purchase is correct.

How do I take out cash on my card?

If you receive cash benefits on your EBT card, you can use your card at a SNAP-approved retailer to request cash back (though not all stores allow this). Some stores will allow you to receive cash back with a purchase, and some stores may allow you to withdraw cash without a purchase. You must follow the store's policy regarding cash back or cash withdrawals.

You also can get cash from an ATM where EBT cards are accepted. Insert your card and enter your 4-digit PIN. Select "Withdrawal" from "Checking" and enter the dollar amount you want to withdraw.

What can I buy with SNAP or P-EBT benefits?

Eligible items are household foods such as fruits and vegetables; meat, poultry and fish; dairy products; breads and cereals; snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages; and seeds and plants that produce food for the household to eat.

Ineligible: Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes and tobacco; vitamins, medicines and supplements (if an item has a "supplement facts" label, it is not eligible for P-EBT purchase); live animals (except shellfish, fish removed from water and animals slaughtered before pick-up from the store); prepared foods that are fit for immediate consumption; hot foods; pet foods; cleaning supplies, paper products and other household supplies; hygiene items and cosmetics.

What will happen if I misuse my EBT card?

It is illegal to sell, trade or give away your SNAP benefits, PIN or Louisiana EBT card; to allow a retailer to buy your food benefits in exchange for cash; and to use someone else's SNAP benefits or Louisiana EBT card for your household. If you are found guilty of intentional program violations, you will be disqualified from SNAP benefits and will have to pay back any unauthorized SNAP benefits issued.

LifeInCheck EBT is a new smartphone app that provides EBT cardholders in Louisiana with easy access to information such as:

  • SNAP and cash account balances

  • Transaction history
  • And more!

The app was developed by Inmar Intelligence, the company that handles EBT cards and processing for DCFS, and is available for iPhones and Androids.

What are the benefits of the app?

Using the LifeInCheck EBT app allows you to:

  • Get your SNAP & cash balances
  • View next available benefit date
  • View recent transactions
  • Mark your card as lost or stolen
  • Request a replacement card
  • Select your PIN
  • Access helpful SNAP and cash information

In the future, DCFS also may send alerts about program updates or other important information for SNAP, FITAP and KCSP clients through the app.

I don't own a smartphone. How can I access the same or similar information?

You can access some of the app's features online at www.LifeInCheckEBT.com. You can also get information on your SNAP or TANF (FITAP or KCSP) case(s) through the DCFS CAFE Self-Service Portal.

DCFS also sends alerts about program updates or other important information through text messages if we have a current mobile number on file for you. You can help ensure you receive these messages by updating your contact information in the CAFE portal.

What about P-EBT? Can I get information on my P-EBT account and balance in the LifeInCheck EBT app?

Yes. You will need a separate LifeInCheck EBT app login (with a different email address) for each EBT card you have. So if you have a P-EBT card and a SNAP card, you will need to create two logins for the app - one login with one email address for your P-EBT card, and a second login with a second email address for your SNAP card. Logging into your P-EBT account on the app will show your P-EBT balance and transactions (though the balance will appear under "SNAP" on the app), and logging into your SNAP account on the app will show your SNAP balance and transactions.

You can use the LifeInCheck EBT app to get your balance, view recent transactions, mark your card as lost or stolen, request a replacement card, select your PIN, and access helpful information about other benefit programs such as SNAP.

How do you download the app?

Search and download the app from the app store (Apple App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices).

What assurance do I have that my personal information is secure?

Federal law requires that the personal information of recipients of SNAP and other federal benefits be kept confidential and secure. Information that must be kept secure includes recipient names, Social Security numbers, benefit amounts, user IDs, passwords, PINs and personal account numbers.

In the case of SNAP, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) developed guidelines to ensure certain security controls are in place to protect recipients' information. The guidelines are based on both federal regulations and industry best practices.

User IDs, passwords and PINs are just some of the ways clients' personal information is safeguarded. The computer systems used to issue benefits and process EBT transactions are also put through rigorous testing and trial runs with FNS before they can be used to handle benefits. That includes the systems that issue benefits (on the DCFS side) and process EBT transactions (on the vendor side), and the mobile app, which communicates with the EBT system and therefore must also be secure.

How to Report a Lost Louisiana Purchase Food Stamp Card

Louisiana's Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) administers the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Louisiana Combined Application Project (LaCAP), which helps low-income households buy food. Eligible beneficiaries receive Louisiana Purchase EBT Cards that have SNAP benefits deposited into these accounts. EBT stands for electronic benefits transfer, and the monthly allotment can be ​$35, $82 or $173​.

Lost Louisiana EBT Cards

It is important to keep your Louisiana EBT Card in a safe place, but it can get misplaced or stolen. You can call LAHelpU's customer helpline at 1-888-524-3578 to request a new one. Do this as soon as possible, since it may have been stolen and someone else may attempt to use it. According to the Louisiana EBT Card brochure, you can also call EBT customer service at 1-888-997-1117 or contact your caseworker directly. It should take ​three to five calendar days​ to receive a replacement.

EBT cards are also called food stamp cards, and the 1-888-997-1117 number is printed right on the back of them. The front has the words "Louisiana Purchase" printed in yellow on top, with the words "automated benefit card" beneath it. Below that is the 16-digit Louisiana EBT card number and the beneficiary's name.

Applying for a Louisiana Purchase EBT Card

According to Benefits.gov, an applicant must be a Louisiana resident and have a current bank balance that is ​under $2,001​. Or, the applicant can have a bank balance ​under $3,001​ if they share their household with a disabled spouse, child or parent or someone over 60. Annual household income limits apply, and there is a chart on the website to help you understand the income requirements. As an example, the income limit (before taxes) for a family of two is ​$22,646​.

There are three different ways to apply for SNAP. The first is to visit a local DCFS office in person; the second is to call 1-888-524-3578. To save time, you can download and complete an application first. You can also apply online at the Louisiana CAFÉ Customer Portal, which saves making a trip to the DCFS. The application takes about an hour to complete. You can monitor your application status through the online portal – once the application is received, it takes ​30 days​ to receive a letter letting you know if you have been granted or denied benefits.

Using a Louisiana Purchase EBT Card

Once approved, the EBT Card can be used to buy selected foods at participating stores in Louisiana and other states. It can be used like a debit card at grocery stores, but you need to create a four-digit PIN and enter it when making purchases.

Those who qualify for cash benefits can use the card to withdraw money from participating ATM locations but be sure to know what your balance is each time you need to use the card and also save the receipts. New cards need to be activated before they can be used. To do this, call 1-888-997-1117. You will also be asked to create a PIN, which should be written down and kept in a safe place.

If you lose your PIN, just call that same help number for help. To keep on top of your EBT Card transactions, you can create an account on the EBT Cardholder Portal, which works in conjunction with Life in Check. You will need your EBT card number in order to register for an online account on the site. It is also good to know that there are never any fees for using the funds to purchase food, but you may be subject to ATM fees when withdrawing money from ATM locations.

DSNAP EBT Cards

When should I expect my DSNAP card, and what do I do if it doesn't arrive?

If you listed a physical address for your DSNAP EBT card, your card can take 3-5 Business Days for delivery. DSNAP cards are being delivered by U.S. Postal Service. Due to the heavy volume, the card may be delayed. 

If you listed a P.O. Box for your DSNAP EBT card, it is being delivered by regular mail delivery, which can take up to 7-10 business days for delivery.

NOTE: The DSNAP EBT card will be sent separately from your benefits approval letter.

You can call LAHelpU from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., M-F, except on holidays. To speak with a customer service representative, select your language, then press option 6 and listen for the appropriate prompt. Tip: Call volumes are lightest in the first and last hours of the day.

If you send an email, provide your name as it appears in our records, your contact information, date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number. You should also include a brief description of your situation and reason for writing, as well as a descriptive subject line. Our staff will respond as quickly as possible, but they receive a great volume of requests. Please allow at least three or four business days for a response.

My DSNAP card has a $0 balance when I call. What's going on?

This could happen for a couple of reasons:

(1) You must activate the card after you receive it for the balance to become available to you. The automated system will not tell you the balance on your card until the card has been activated. For information on how to activate your card, read “How do I activate my EBT card for DSNAP?” below.

(2) If you have an EBT card for another program (such as P-EBT, or a card from an old or denied SNAP case), when you call the EBT Customer Service Center to activate your DSNAP EBT card, you must make sure you enter the 16-digit card number from the DSNAP card. If you enter only your personal information (SSN, DOB, ZIP), the system may pull up your P-EBT or old SNAP account instead of your DSNAP account. For more information on how to activate your card, read “How do I activate my EBT card for DSNAP?” below.

If neither of these reasons applies, please call the LAHelpU Customer Service Center at 1-888-524-3578 to speak with someone about your case.

How do I activate my EBT card for DSNAP?

To activate your DSNAP EBT card, call the EBT customer service line at 1-888-997-1117, enter your 16-digit card number, and then listen for the option to select or reset your PIN. To set your PIN, you will need the last four digits of the Social Security number, date of birth and zip code for the mailing address of the Head of Household.

If the Head of Household did not provide a Social Security number during the DSNAP application process, the cardholder will need to call the LAHelpU Customer Service Center at 1-888-524-3578 to get the number needed to set the PIN and activate the DSNAP EBT card.

NOTE: If you have an EBT card for another program (such as P-EBT, or a card from an old or denied SNAP case), you must first enter the 16-digit card number from your DSNAP EBT card before setting your PIN. Otherwise, the system may pull up your P-EBT or old SNAP account instead of your DSNAP account.

PIN Options:

General EBT Info

When are SNAP benefits loaded onto EBT cards?

SNAP (food stamp) benefits are posted to the recipient's account during the first 14 days of the month. Recipient benefits are accessible by 5:00 a.m. the morning after they are posted. Benefits are posted on the same date every month regardless of the day of the week. Holidays and weekends do not affect the date of benefit eligibility.

When will my next benefit be deposited into my account?

A benefit schedule for SNAP is provided in the Program Info section of the LifeInCheck EBT mobile app. Go to "My Account," then click "Benefits Schedule."

PLEASE NOTE: The "Benefits Schedule" in the app is for regular SNAP benefits only. Other benefits, such as Supplemental SNAP or P-EBT, are issued on a different schedule. How are EBT cards secured?

Benefits are secure and accessible only to persons authorized by the recipient. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) is selected by the recipient and must be correctly entered in order to successfully complete all electronic transactions. As purchases are made at grocery store checkout lanes, recipient accounts are debited and the recipient is given a receipt which provides the remaining account balance.

How do I change my PIN for my EBT card?

There are 3 ways to change your PIN:

  • Mobile: Log into the LifeInCheck EBT mobile app and select the "My Account" icon on the bottom right of the screen. There will be a list of options available including one to change your PIN.
  • Web: Go to www.LifeInCheckEBT.com and select the "Card Management" tab on the top of the screen. This will bring you to a screen where you can change your PIN.
  • Phone: Call the EBT customer service line at 1-888-997-1117 and listen for the options to select a PIN or reset your PIN.

NOTE: PINs selected with any of the below patterns are not allowed:

  • Identical digits (1111, 2222, 3333, etc.)

REMEMBER: Do not write your PIN on your card or on anything else you carry in your wallet or purse, in case it is lost or stolen. Choose a PIN that is easy for you to remember, but hard for someone else to guess or figure out, in case you lose your card.

PIN Freeze After 3 Bad PIN Attempts:

After three bad PIN attempts, your account will freeze. Please know that your PIN will reset at midnight and you can attempt to use your card again or reset your PIN at that time.

What do I do if my EBT card is lost, stolen or damaged and I need to request a replacement?

If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, cancel your card immediately. You may request a new replacement card after you have canceled your current card. You can do this in one of 3 ways:

  • Mobile: Log into the LifeInCheck EBT mobile app and select the "My Account" icon on the bottom right of the screen. There will be a list of options available including one to deactivate or cancel your card and request a new replacement card.
  • Web: Go to www.LifeInCheckEBT.com and select the "Card Management" tab on the top of the screen. This will bring you to a screen where you can cancel your card and request a new replacement card.
  • Phone:  Call the EBT customer service line at 1-888-997-1117 and listen for the option to report your card as lost, stolen or damaged.

Will I be able to use my benefits while I'm waiting for my replacement card to arrive?

Unfortunately, you will be unable to use your benefits until you receive your new replacement card and select a PIN. After a new PIN is selected, your new card is activated and your previous balance and transaction information will be available on the new card.

What do I do if my balance is incorrect?

Follow these steps:

  • Sign into the web portal at www.LifeInCheckEBT.com or use the LifeInCheck EBT mobile app to view your most recent transactions and verify the transactions are correct.
  • If you have a concern about a specific transaction, call the EBT customer service line at 1-888-997-1117 to file a disputed charge.

Where can I use my EBT card?

You can use your EBT card anywhere in the U.S. that accepts SNAP EBT cards. The SNAP Retailer Locator allows anyone to locate nearby SNAP-authorized retailers by entering a street address, city, and state, or zip code. Enter your starting location and select a retailer or map point to get details and directions.

How do I use my EBT card at the store?

You can use your EBT card at any SNAP-approved retailer to buy eligible food (see below for eligible food listing) with your SNAP or P-EBT benefits. Locate a SNAP retailer with this interactive tool.

If you also have cash benefits, you can use the benefits to buy food and non-food items, or get cash back.

At checkout, swipe your EBT card through the machine. If you receive both SNAP and cash benefits on your EBT card, be sure to select the correct payment type when your card is swiped. The State cannot correct this after the transaction is complete and you have left the store. Follow the directions on the machine to enter your PIN. Always check your receipt to make sure the amount of the EBT purchase is correct.

How do I take out cash on my card?

If you receive cash benefits on your EBT card, you can use your card at a SNAP-approved retailer to request cash back (though not all stores allow this). Some stores will allow you to receive cash back with a purchase, and some stores may allow you to withdraw cash without a purchase. You must follow the store's policy regarding cash back or cash withdrawals.

You also can get cash from an ATM where EBT cards are accepted. Insert your card and enter your 4-digit PIN. Select "Withdrawal" from "Checking" and enter the dollar amount you want to withdraw.

What can I buy with SNAP or P-EBT benefits?

Eligible items are household foods such as fruits and vegetables; meat, poultry and fish; dairy products; breads and cereals; snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages; and seeds and plants that produce food for the household to eat.

Ineligible: Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes and tobacco; vitamins, medicines and supplements (if an item has a "supplement facts" label, it is not eligible for P-EBT purchase); live animals (except shellfish, fish removed from water and animals slaughtered before pick-up from the store); prepared foods that are fit for immediate consumption; hot foods; pet foods; cleaning supplies, paper products and other household supplies; hygiene items and cosmetics.

What will happen if I misuse my EBT card?

It is illegal to sell, trade or give away your SNAP benefits, PIN or Louisiana EBT card; to allow a retailer to buy your food benefits in exchange for cash; and to use someone else's SNAP benefits or Louisiana EBT card for your household. If you are found guilty of intentional program violations, you will be disqualified from SNAP benefits and will have to pay back any unauthorized SNAP benefits issued.

You can access some of the app's features online at www.LifeInCheckEBT.com. You can also get information on your SNAP or TANF (FITAP or KCSP) case(s) through the DCFS CAFE Self-Service Portal.

DCFS also sends alerts about program updates or other important information through text messages if we have a current mobile number on file for you. You can help ensure you receive these messages by updating your contact information in the CAFE portal.

What about P-EBT? Can I get information on my P-EBT account and balance in the LifeInCheck EBT app?

Yes. You will need a separate LifeInCheck EBT app login (with a different email address) for each EBT card you have. So if you have a P-EBT card and a SNAP card, you will need to create two logins for the app - one login with one email address for your P-EBT card, and a second login with a second email address for your SNAP card. Logging into your P-EBT account on the app will show your P-EBT balance and transactions (though the balance will appear under "SNAP" on the app), and logging into your SNAP account on the app will show your SNAP balance and transactions.

You can use the LifeInCheck EBT app to get your balance, view recent transactions, mark your card as lost or stolen, request a replacement card, select your PIN, and access helpful information about other benefit programs such as SNAP.
