Crochet baby hat with simple stitches and gender neutral ribbing. Made in pink, blue, and grey.

A truly beginner friendly pattern

A crochet baby hat might be the sweetest thing to make &#; and some of the easiest! For those of you that might be brand new to crochet, don&#;t worry! I&#;ll walk you through this pattern with written instructions as well as a full video tutorial. I chose really simple stitches for this pattern so you can follow along without expert-level ability. Just be patient with yourself and have fun!

The Inspiration + Design

When I was pregnant with my son Parker, I wanted to make a cute newborn set for him! I had trouble finding a boyish set that I loved so I set out to design my own. This was one of the very first patterns I posted on my blog and I&#;m so glad you&#;ve loved it as much as I have over the years. I made only a newborn hat in the original post but I&#;ve scaled the pattern to include hats for all baby sizes, preschoolers and children! Yay!

Crochet baby hat, baby booties, and diaper cover to make the Parker baby set of free crochet patterns.

This crochet baby hat is part of a set &#; see the matching baby booties here & the matching diaper cover here.

This set is a great gift for baby showers or new additions to family and friends&#; families, and it&#;s a very gender neutral pattern. I&#;ve got it pictured here in the classic blue and pink as well as a gorgeous grey marble. I love modern baby items that are simplistic in design and can work for any mom&#;s style! Click here to check out all my kids crochet patterns.

I wish I&#;d been able to get some photos of Parker in this set when he was born, but he weighed in at a whoppin&#; 10 lb. 2 oz and was too chunky to fit into them! Lol!

The Yarn

I decided to use Lion Brand Vanna&#;s Choice yarn for this pattern as it&#;s a very versatile worsted weight yarn with a stunning color range. There are colors to match any baby shower or nursery theme, as well as any individual style.

However you can use any worsted weight yarn for this project! There are wonderful wool based worsted weight yarns to use for this project as well as other natural and synthetic fibers. Really, anything goes as long as you can meet the gauge listed in the pattern below.

I do have a video tutorial for the newborn size of this hat for all my visual learners below &#; enjoy! 😉

Pattern Notes

1. Two options are given for Round 1 with or without a magic ring. You can choose whichever one you are comfortable with.

2. If you start with a magic ring, take special care to weave in the beginning tail securely going back and forth at least 3 times. You don’t want your magic ring to open up and make your hat fall apart.

3. If you work your first round without a magic ring, you might have to use the beginning tail to close any holes left on the crown before weaving in the rest of the tail.

4. First 3 Rounds are common for all 4 sizes. After working on those proceed to Round 4 for the size you are making.

Round 1(with magic ring): Make a magic ring and work 8 sc into it, close the ring, do not sl st and do not turn.——–8 sc

2. Round 1 without a magic ring

Round 1(without magic ring): Ch 3, 2 sc into 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc into next ch, you will now end up below your foundation chain, 2 sc into the next free loop of the foundation chain, do not sl st and do not turn. See pic 2 above. ——–8 sc

Round 2: 2 sc in next st( the first st of Round 1), place a marker in the first st you just made, 2 sc in next 7 sts until you end in the st right before the marked one, do not sl st and do not turn.——16 sc

Newborn Crochet Hat

Round 4: 1 sc in next marked st, move the marker up into the st you just made, 1 sc in each st across until you end in the st right before the marked one, do not sl st and do not turn.———24 sc

Repeat Round 4 three more times until your hat is /2 inches tall. Do not fasten off yet.  Fold your hat flat. I found that it lays flat in some directions more than the others. Experiment to find the best fold, so it becomes easy to attach the ears.

3. Work sc sts until you reach the side and sl st to the side.

Once you fold the hat, most likely your marker won’t be on the side fold. So, take out the marker and continue working sc sts until you reach near the side of the hat. It might take you one or more stitches depending on how you folded it and the size you are making.

Last Round: Sl st to the BLO of the next st on the side fold, ch 1, 1 sc in BLO of the same st as ch 1, 1 sc in the BLO of each st across to end, Sl st to the first sc. Fasten off.— sc

Ears (make 2)

4. Run the needle along the base of the ear and cinch.

5. Completed ear

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st as ch 1, 2 sc in remaining 3 sts, fasten off with a inch tail for sewing.—–8 sc

Attaching the Ears

Thread the long tail left on the ears and run your needle in and out through the straight base of the ear, pull to cinch. The tighter you pull, the smaller your ears will look.  Repeat with the other ear.

Place both the ears along the sides of the hat and find the position you like best. Sew them along the fold of the hat on either side.

Finishing the Newborn Crochet Hat

Make sure you read the pattern notes give at the beginning of the pattern and then weave in any tails left.

Beginner's Guide to an Easy Crochet Baby Hat

Materials

  • 30 to 90 yard worsted weight yarn
  1. Making a Ring

Ch 4, join last stitch to first stitch with sl st to form a ring.

  2. Foundation Round

Ch 1 (counts as first sc), work 7 sc into the center of the ring, sl st to first ch to close the ring—8 sc sts.

    Tip

More advanced crocheters may wish to start with a yarn ring, sometimes know as the "magic ring" for the way it makes the hole in the middle disappear. Work 8 stitches into the center of the ring of yarn, then pull the tail to close up the ring.

Another option is to ch 2, and work into the first chain stitch as if it were the ring, making 7 sc into it, then working a sl st to finish the round. These options just reflect the many different options for starting a circle.

  3. Double the Number of Stitches

Increase Round 1: ch 1 (counts as first sc), work sc in the stitch at the base of the chain, [work 2 sc in next st] 7 times, sl st to beg ch st to join rnd—16 sc sts.

  4. Increase Every Other Stitch

Increase Round 2: ch 1 (counts as first sc), work sc in the stitch at the base of the ch st, sc in next stitch, [(work 2 sc in next stitch), 1 sc in next stitch] 7 times, sl st to beg ch st to join rnd—24 sc sts.

  5. Continue Increasing To Desired Circumference

What you are doing here is crocheting a flat circle, increasing 8 sts every round until your circle reaches the desired circumference of the finished beanie.

Round 3: ch 1 (counts as first sc), work sc in the stitch at the base of the ch st, sc in each of next 2 sts, [2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts] 7 times, sl st to beg ch st to join rnd—32 sc sts.

Round 4: ch 1 (counts as first sc), work sc in the stitch at the base of the ch st, sc in each of next 3 sts, [2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts] 7 times, sl st to beg ch st to join rnd—40 sc sts.

For beanie larger than 13 1/4 inch, continue increasing.

  6. Work Even

Continue, working 1 sc in each 1 sc without increasing.

All rnds: ch 1 (counts as first sc; sk st at base of ch), work 1 sc in each sc st to end of rnd, sl st to beg ch to join.

Rep last round until beanie measures inches from center ring, or desired depth. If your hat recipient is handy then simply place the hat on their head to check the length. If not, refer to the Baby Hat Size Chart for standard length measurements.

  7. Finish

Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

How to Crochet a Baby Hat Step-By-Step

Crocheted baby hat

Having a solid baby hat pattern is a must: you can turn to it again and again, knowing you&#;ll always have something adorable to bring to the baby shower. Just think of this tutorial about how to crochet a baby hat as a recipe — add in whatever yarn you want and crochet at whichever gauge makes you happy. There&#;s always room to adapt and make the hat entirely your own.

Crochet Baby Hat

Level: Easy

What You Need

  • Yarn (approximately 60 yards, will vary based on size)
  • Crochet hook: pick a size suited to your yarn

Pro Tip: Choose a yarn that&#;s soft (like wool, if baby isn&#;t allergic), machine washable (new parents do not have time to hand wash) and fun to work with. We used Cloudborn Pima Cotton DK Yarn and a size G crochet hook.

Choose a Size

You need to know two measurements before you begin: the diameter and the length. For our example, which will be sized for a 6-month-old, we&#;ll use a diameter of 4½&#; and a length of 5½&#;. If you&#;re not sure what those measurements should be for the size you want to make, follow these suggestions:

  • Size: Premie (Diameter: 2¾&#;; Length: 4&#;)
  • Size: Newborn (Diameter: 3½&#;; Length: 5&#;)
  • Size: Months (Diameter: 4&#;; Length: 6&#;)
  • Size: Months (Diameter: 4½&#;; Length: 7&#;)
  • Size: Months (Diameter: 5½&#;; Length: 7½&#;)
  • Size: 12 Months (Diameter: 6½&#;; Length: 8&#;)
  • Size: 24 Months-4T (Diameter: 6¾&#;; Length: 8½&#;)

Remember, it&#;s always better to err on the side of too big when it comes to hats for babies: they grow fast, and eventually that hat is going to fit.

Instructions

Start With a Flat Circle

This hat is worked from the crown down, starting with a flat circle.

Pro Tip: You can crochet the circle using any stitches you want, working as many rounds as necessary to achieve the desired diameter. We used double crochet stitches in the example shown here.

crochet baby hat round 1

Round 1: Ch 3 and work 9 dc in third chain from hook. (Or crochet a magic ring or adjustable loop and make 10 dc inside it.) Join the last stitch to the top of the first stitch to close the ring. (Total of 10 dc st.)

crochet baby hat round 2

Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first dc). 1 dc in same stitch as ch 3. 2 dc in each stitch around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to finish round. (Total of 20 dc st.)

crochet baby hat round 3

Round 3: Chain 3 (counts as first dc). 2 dc in next stitch. *1 dc, 2 dc. Repeat from * around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to finish round. (Total of 30 dc st.)

crochet baby hat round 4

Round 4: Chain 3 (counts as first dc). 1 dc, 2 dc. *1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc. Repeat from * around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to finish round. (Total of 40 dc st.)

crochet baby hat round 5

Round 5: Chain 3 (counts as first dc). 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc. *1 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc. Repeat from * around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to finish round. (Total of 50 dc st.)

Remember to measure the diameter of your circle after each round to determine when you&#;ve reached the size that you want. In our example, we reached the 4½&#; diameter after five rounds of double crochet. You could continue with additional rounds until you reach your diameter, then it&#;s time to move onto the body of the hat.

Crochet the Body of the Hat

crochet baby hat in 10 rounds

You&#;ll create the hat&#;s body by continuing to create rounds but without any increasing. You&#;ll simply crochet one stitch in each stitch from the round below, adding rows until you reach the length (from crown to bottom row) that you desire.

Round 6: Chain 3 (counts as first dc). Dc in each stitch around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to finish round. (Total 50 dc st per round).

Repeat Round 6 until your hat reaches your desired length. For me, I reached the 5½&#; length after five rounds of the body of the hat (10 rounds total in the hat).

Add an Edging

Completed crocheted baby hat

Adding a crochet edging is totally optional, but definitely adds a bit of flair to an otherwise basic hat. Bear in mind that an edging will increase the overall length of your hat. If you&#;re concerned about an exact fit, add the edging into your calculations.

An edging doesn&#;t have to be fancy: we used a simple single crochet border by adding an 11th round to the baby hat by working ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc in each st around, sl st to ch 1 to close the round (for a total of 50 sc stitches).
