In 2011, the 20-inch GT hit the market and almost instantly became the flagship of the ADVAN Racing brand. Last year saw the 19-inch expand the market and now the 18-inch size debuts.

The 19-inch and 20-inch sizes maximized the allure of large diameters with a deep rim as their underlying basic design concept. So many expected that the 18-inch size would inherit the same deep rim concept but instead they are set to standard depth in every size. That means 18-inch offers ample clearance even for large callipers, something different from conventional 19- and 20-inch sizes.

The GT 18-inch size focuses on the concept of circuit attack cars which rely on R-spec tyres. That means the wheels must provide ample space for the attack cars big callipers. As a result the GT 18-inch size’s basic profile is for front-side mounting. A special rim profile was developed to offer ample clearance for 400mm rotors in some sizes. With that as the base, YOKOHAMA looked once more at strength and weight before settling on the final design.

Because the tires are mounted from the front side the rims can have a maximum 34 mm depth and depending on the width and offset offer five types of concave spokes, which means these wheels deliver optimum combination of form and function for this size. And the knurling process (an anti-tire-slip feature) is adopted for all sizes of 18-inch wheels.

What Makes the Advan GT Special?

The Advan GT is the second forged wheel in the Advan lineup and it's one of the most popular wheels that Advan has designed. The design is a very simple and elegant one-piece 5-spoke design constructed from forged A6061-T6 aluminum. It offers superior strength and it is incredibly light, a desirable characteristic of racing wheels. T Which means that it is 100% aluminum, unlike most forged wheels that only have 80% aluminum in their wheels.

This new Advan Racing Wheel sports a stunning, aggressive, and simple 5-spoke design of the TCIII and the strength, durability, and multiple rim depth designs of the, also forged, RZ-DF. The Advan GT comes in 3 rim depths: a standard 39mm, a medium 51.5mm, and finally an extra deep 67.5mm. There are also PCD options available for cars made in Japan, the US and in Europe, like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.

Mold-Form Forging

Advan Racing’s forged wheels are made using mold-form forging technology, which involves the use of a dedicated mold for each type of wheel and a differently shaped mold for each wheel. This process is much different than the standard machine forging process used for all other forged wheels.

Requiring the use of advanced technology, this method is both labor-intensive and time-consuming, but Yokohama believes this to be the only forging method that fully exploits the intrinsic potential of forging. The end result is more strength than a standard machine forged wheel.
