Our day school program offers a unique and positive learning opportunity for all students. We enroll students PreK through the 6th grade. Each classroom is set up to serve multiple grade levels, and we always keep an 8-to-1 student/teacher ratio. At Compass Rose Academy we use a blend of hands-on curriculum and a more traditional workbook curriculum that allows for a multi-sensory approach to learning.  The best way to truly see, feel, and understand how CRA works is to see it in action. We are open for classroom observations with an appointment. Call today to schedule a time!

Compass Rose Journey School welcomes first students

“It was exciting to see all their faces, they were really happy,” Thompson said of the first class of students to walk the school’s halls. “We are adjusting and getting students back into the routine of being in classrooms again.”

The 42,000 square-foot school’s upper grades are heavier enrolled, which came as somewhat of a surprise to Thompson, who had expected the school’s first and second grades to be the first to fill up.

The school will function, she said, as a nature-based public health school.

“We have a nature-based philosophy, which means we want kids outdoors more and engaging with nature,” Thompson said. “Learning doesn’t happen just in the classroom; it happens outside the classroom as well.”

A “learning garden” is still under construction, as is the school’s soccer field behind the building.

“We have designed a curriculum that will teach kids how to take care of not just themselves but the community, and use different programs on how we keep ourselves healthy in order to promote health, (programs) that you need in the public health profession.”

She said Assistant Principal Frank Lopez designed a curriculum “that is specifically for elementary school because there’s not really any elementary schools doing a public health curriculum.”

Thompson spoke of the attraction of Compass Rose Journey, the third in the Compass Rose line of tuition-free schools, after Compass Rose Legacy and Compass Rose Ingenuity.

“There are great schools in the area, but we know that every student might need another option,” the principal said. “If the existing school structure doesn’t work for you, then here’s another option in your community. That’s why I think school choice is so important, so students can find just the right fit.”

Paul Morrissey, CEO and founder of Compass Rose Schools, said each of the schools is taking a different approach, a different mission.

When opening the first school, Legacy, near the Brook City Base, Morrissey said they touted high-tech prep among parents in the area.

“The more I talked to families down there, the more I heard, ‘Well, high tech is cool, but I want my child to be their own boss,’” Morrissey said. “That’s entrepreneurship, you want your child to be an entrepreneur. We can teach that. The more we talked to people in that area, the more the entrepreneurial it really felt. We matched the theme of that campus to the area, and it’s gone really well.”

Compass Rose did something similar with the second school, Ingenuity, located next to Port SA, an active air base.

“There’s military there, there’s defense contractors there, so aviation and aeronautics was what was on people’s minds. Great jobs, great-paying jobs, people were saying, ‘I want my child to have access to that,’” Morrissey said.

Rocketry, science, building and flying planes and jets matched up well with Ingenuity, he added.

Thompson said the school is not zoned and provides transportation, “which we believe is necessary for equity purposes. When you offer an option, you need to make sure you have transportation … so we have cast our net a little bit wider” than just the surrounding Windcrest community.

One unique aspect of the Compass Rose classroom is its utilization of a “teacher resident” program.

“It’s not just one teacher all the time, we have a teacher residency program at Compass Rose, which is awesome,” she said. “They provide additional support, so if the teacher ratio is handling 30 kids, there’s an additional teacher within that classroom.”

Compass Rose Journey enrollment is ongoing. Thompson and her school staff can be reached at 210-850-2507. Enrollment can be started and campus tours can be scheduled on the school’s website at:
