How to install Tanaza Firmware on Ubiquiti UniFi AC Mesh

CAUTION
Before continuing, make sure the device has an original firmware version not higher than 3.8.3.
Downgrade if needed via Unifi controller, using the firmware available from the official Ubiquiti page (https://www.ui.com/download/unifi) in the specific access point section, selecting the "SEE PAST FIRMWARE"


 

In order to flash the Ubiquiti UniFi AC Mesh with Tanaza firmware you can follow these instructions:
 

STEP 1

Ensure that the unit is reachable by your computer.
 

IP Address: 192.168.1.20 

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0


In order to connect to your AP, please configure your computer as follow:


Option 1: if you connect the AP directly to you computer IP Address: 192.168.1.100 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Option 2: if you connect the AP to your computer trough a LAN with a DHCP Server (e.g. with a modem/router) IP Address: Automatically_assigned_by_your_DHCP_Server Subnet Mask: Automatically_assigned_by_your_DHCP_Server
You you should be able to know which IP address is assigned to your AP.  
To do so, you could have multiple choices:
  • Method 1: Check DHCP Server IP lease table
Access to your DHCP Server (e.g your modem/router) webpage and check which IP is assigned to the device with the same MAC address of your AP.
Usually the DHCP Server address is the same of the Default Gateway.
To know what is your Default Gateway open your Command Prompt  (from the Start Menu, or just press Win+R to open the Run window, enter “cmd” and press OK) and digit

for Windows OS ipconfig
or for Linux OS, just type ifconfig  
  • Method 2:  Ping Broadcast Address and check ARP table
The second way to do this if you can’t get access to your DHCP server is to use a useful command in Windows called ARP (Address Resolution Protocol).

Basically, you ping the broadcast address on your network from any Windows machine and then check out the ARP table afterwards.

To do so, open your Command Prompt  (from the Start Menu, or just press Win+R to open the Run window, enter “cmd” and press OK) and digit  "ping" your IP class family, with the last number "255".

E.g. if your network is 192.168.1.X with a mask of 255.255.255.0, then you would ping 192.168.1.255, like this example: ping 192.168.1.255
When you ping, you will get a Request Timed Out all four times, this is normal since the command is used only to request a reply to any device in your network, in order to collect data.

After that, type: arp –a
You will now get a list of all the connected devices on your network along with their physical addresses.

Check for the MAC address which matches your AP, and you should be able to get its IP address.

 

STEP 2

You are now able to upload the firmware into the AP.
 

Windows users

First of all get and install PuTTY and PSCP software (you can download the Windows Installer here: PuTTY Package File ).

Check that both of the software are installed correctly (they should be both installed in a directory similar to this one "C:\Program Files (x86)\PuTTY")

Open the Command Prompt (from the Start Menu, or just press Win+R to open the Run window, enter “cmd” and press OK).

Browse to the downloaded firmware folder (e.g. with the command "cd C:/firmware-folder/") and upload the files into the device, by entering this command:
  pscp -scp downloaded_tanaza_firmware.bin [email protected]device_ip_address:/tmp/fwupdate.bin   

Please change "downloaded_tanaza_firmware.bin" and "device_ip_address" with the firmware filename and with the AP IP address
(e.g scp tanaza-unifiacpro-2.10.0 [email protected]:/tmp/fwupdate.bin)

When prompted, enter the password:

ubnt  

Linux / Apple users

Open Command Line (or Console or Terminal, depending on OS you have), browse to the downloaded firmware folder and upload the files into the device, by entering this command:
  scp downloaded_tanaza_firmware.bin [email protected]device_ip_address:/tmp/fwupdate.bin
Please change "downloaded_tanaza_firmware.bin" and "device_ip_address" with the firmware filename and with the AP IP address
(e.g. scp tanaza-unifiacpro-2.10.0 [email protected]:/tmp/fwupdate.bin)

When prompted, enter the password: ubnt

 

STEP 3

Enter into the device by SSH.

 

Windows users

In order to get SSH access, use PuTTY, connect to the AP using the following parameters:
  Protocol: SSH  IP address: AP_IP_Address
Please change "AP_IP_Address" with the AP IP address.

When prompted, enter the default password: User: ​ubnt Password: ubnt or User: ​root ​Password: ubnt  

Linux / Apple users

Type this command into your Command Prompt ssh [email protected]device_ip_address
Please change "device_ip_address" with the AP IP address

When prompted, enter the default password: ​ubnt

 

STEP 4

through the interface (SSH or PUTTY depending on how you executed the previous step), perform the command:
  mkdir -p /tmp/fw && tar -xf /tmp/fwupdate.bin -C /tmp/fw
to create a directory and extract the uploaded files into it, then execute this command to launch the flashing procedure:
  /tmp/fw/fw_install.sh
If the procedure is completed correctly, you will get disconnected while the AP is rebooting with the Tanaza firmware installed, like in this image:

Final considerations 

Congratulations! Now your AP has Tanaza superpower!

NOTE: every Tanaza powered AP at boot will search for a DHCP server into the connected network, in order to get an IP address.

Only if after 1-2 min (max) there is no answer, the AP will use the
 


IP Address: 192.168.66.1 
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
