Recap: Is Net10 Wireless good?

Net10 Wireless has the advantage of working on multiple networks, but its data caps are relatively low considering its price. In other words, you shouldn’t have too much of a problem getting a signal anywhere in the country, but once you pass your data threshold for the month, your speeds will slow down dramatically.

Net10 Wireless makes the most sense for folks who don’t use much data and don’t want to worry about data overages.

Plans: Net10 Wireless offers a bunch of “Unlimited Plans,” but that’s a misleading name. The main difference between the plans is your data cap. Once you pass that data cap, your data will slow down so much it won’t feel like an unlimited plan. If you can choose a Net10 Wireless data plan and stay below your data cap every month, you’ll get a pretty good deal.
Coverage: Net10 Wireless should have better coverage than your average MVNO cellular wireless provider. It will hook you up to whatever network carries the strongest signal in your area.
Devices: All the latest devices from Apple, Android, and Google will work with your Net10 Wireless plan. Just expect to pay a big chunk of change for a new device.
Overall: Net10 Wireless offers reliable coverage and affordable pricing, but you need to stay below your data cap or internet access on your phone will be a slog.

If you’re currently a user with Net10 Wireless, please let us know how you would rate your coverage. Do you find it more reliable than you expected? For those of you who are thinking of making the switch to Net10 Wireless, let us know why in the comments below.

Net10 Wireless is a prepaid cell phone service provider that says it can give you everything you love about your current network for a lower price.

Owned by TracFone Wireless, you may have seen Net10’s SIM kits for sale at major retailers alongside some of TracFone’s other brands like Total Wireless, Simple Mobile and Straight Talk.

I tried out Net10 Wireless for 30 days to see if it’s worth the savings. Here’s what you need to know before signing up…

Table of Contents:

1. Plans and Pricing

When I logged on to Net10’s website, I found more than a handful of smartphone service plans available. All of them had data caps. There is no unlimited data plan option with Net10.

As of March 2020, the cheapest plan is $20 per month before taxes and fees for unlimited talk, text and 1GB of high-speed data.

The 30-day plan I chose is $35 per month and provides unlimited talk, text and 4GB of 4G LTE data. The price drops to $31.50 if you sign up for the auto-refill feature.

With all of its plans, data is slowed to 2G speeds if you go over your monthly limit for high-speed data.

Partial list of Net10 plans (Image: Net10's website)

Like most prepaid carriers, there are no activation or cancellation fees with Net10 Wireless. There are also discounts if you add multiple lines to your account and set up auto-refill.

At the time of this writing, select plans now include international calling credit. Not all prepaid carriers offer that!

2. Network Partners

Net10 Wireless doesn’t own any cell phone towers, but it partners with the major wireless networks to provide service to its customers.

With Net10, you can likely keep your current network when you switch. A company spokesperson told me that Net10 uses the four major networks: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint.

Customers get access to one of those networks, not all four. It’s determined based on your location and device.

3. Getting Started

You can get started with Net10 Wireless by visiting or stopping by a retailer that sells the provider’s SIM kits.

When I entered my zip code on Net10’s website, I learned that retailers like CVS, Walgreens and 7-Eleven sell Net10 SIM cards, as do a number of smaller authorized retailers.

However, I chose to purchase an AT&T SIM kit on Net10’s website after checking phone compatibility. (More on that later.)

Net10 Sim Card Kit

A few days after my order, FedEx delivered my Net10 activation kit, with a signature required. I was up and running within a few minutes by following these steps:

  • Inserted SIM card into my phone
  • Went to Net10’s special activation website
  • Entered SIM card number
  • Confirmed phone compatibility
  • Chose whether to keep my number or get a new one
  • Created a Net10 account
  • Started my phone and began using it

The Net10 Wireless SIM kit includes step-by-step directions. If you’re not tech-savvy, you can always call customer service for assistance. The number is 877-836-2368.

4. Phone Options

Most Net10 customers will likely want to keep the smartphone that they already have. To make sure that’s possible, go to Net10’s website and select the option to check compatibility. Your device will determine which network you’ll be assigned.

For those who want a new phone, Net10 has a limited selection of devices available for sale online.

When I checked Net10’s website, there were 17 devices for sale from brands like Apple, Samsung, LG and Motorola. The majority of the phones were priced less than $50.

If you want a more high-end phone, you can always buy an unlocked device somewhere else and bring it to Net10.

5. Call and Text Performance

For my 30-day test, I experienced zero dropped calls and zero missing texts with Net10 Wireless. My Moto G6 smartphone was compatible with AT&T, so that’s the network I was assigned to.

Wi-Fi calling is a feature that Net10 makes available, but your phone must have Wi-Fi calling capabilities.

6. Data Speeds

When I’ve tried out other TracFone-owned brands, data speeds have averaged around 10 Mbps. That’s fast enough to stream video or music, surf the web and check your emails.

With Net10, I averaged a download speed of 11.8 Mbps based on six tests from

Net10 Speedtest results

I opened up YouTube and played a video after every speed test to see if there were any performance issues, but there were none. Even at 5 Mbps, I was able to watch a video with no buffering.

7. Customer Service

Net10 Wireless has no stores, so customer service is handled by phone or live chat. For this review, I contacted Net10 several times and received prompt answers to my questions — with little or no wait time.

I preferred phone customer support over chat because the representatives appeared to be more knowledgeable.

If you need quick answers to common questions like data usage, dial 611611 from your Net10 phone. This text helpline is a feature that all of the TracFone brands offer.

Final Thought

If you’re trying to leave one of the Big 4 carriers, Net10 makes it easy. In most cases, you can keep your network, keep your phone and even keep your phone number!

And with a presence in major retailers nationwide, you can walk into a store and purchase a SIM card today if you want to.

For those who are new to prepaid carriers, I like TracFone’s brands like Net10 because there are no activation fees or long-term commitments. If it doesn’t work out, just try another service at the end of your billing cycle.

When it comes to smart phones and rate plans, most consumers are familiar with the big four brands (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint) in the carrier space. But what about the numerous prepaid and MVNO companies?

We’ve covered many of the bigger names, highlighting them with buyer’s guides and invite you to check them out. While they’re a great jumping off point, they don’t dive into the specific of handset selection.

Take, for instance, Net10 Wireless. What sort of options does the carrier offer when it comes to buying a new phone?

We’ve gathered up a handful of the best phones you can purchase at Net10 Wireless today. Although the selection is limited, there are still interesting and compelling handsets to buy.

As always, we suggest buying an unlocked phone or a used tier-one phone for use with Net10. The options are plentiful in both directions and you’ll likely get something more powerful.

Samsung Galaxy A21

The Galaxy S series gets all of the fanfare, but the Galaxy A line is just as good for a lot of people. Indeed, these lower cost options give consumers the same great Samsung design but with just the right amount of features. We’re talking maybe one-third the price yet still plenty of power.

Standout features in the Galaxy A21 include a 6.5-inch HD display, and quad-camera (16MP main lens, 120 degree ultra wide, 2MP depth camera, and 2MP macro) array. An octa-core processor with 3GB RAM/32GB ROM is paired with Android 10, and the 4,000mAh battery should get typical users far beyond a full day.

Shop Samsung Galaxy A21 at Net10

Motorola E7

We absolutely love what Motorola does with its Android phones. They run a bare bones software experience that leaves things the way Google intended, and feature affordably priced alternatives to flagships.

Here, you get a big (6.2-inch) screen, a very modern build of Android (10), and respectable smattering of mid-range hardware. Key details include an octa-core processor, 32GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot for external media.

Other things we appreciate? A water resistant coating, USB Type-C charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

LG Reflect

If you’ve never owned a smartphone, or are giving your child their first handset, you likely don’t want to spend that much money. To that end, you can get a decent phone for cheap.

The LG Reflect is a little older than the others here but there’s a reason it’s still offered. Priced fairly and affordably, you get a 6.5-inch display, 13-megapixel camera, and decent hardware. It won’t set the world on fire, but you’ll have a better understanding of needs for the next device.

At Allconnect, we work to present quality information with editorial integrity. While this post may contain offers from our partners, our opinions are our own. Here’s how we make money.

  • Nationwide 4G LTE coverage on all four major networks
  • Plans start at $20/mo. for 2GB of data
  • Variety of plans available for every budget, with a wide range of speeds
  • Doesn’t offer many deals on new phones

Net10 is one of the several prepaid brands operated by Tracfone, and it offers some enticing perks for new subscribers. In addition to affordable rates, Net10 has reliable nationwide 4G LTE coverage on the nation’s top four networks. There are no contacts, no added costs and no hidden fees.

When you sign up for Net10, you have two options — keep your current phone or purchase a new one. Net10 sells all the latest models, and you can often score a great deal if you purchase a phone with a plan. You can keep your phone number or get a new one — Net10 is all about flexibility.

Overall, Net10 is a great phone company if you’re looking for a prepaid phone plan. But it’s best suited for people who don’t care about getting the fastest speeds. Net10 offers unlimited data, but the amount of high-speed data you’re allowed each month is on the low side.

Net10 phones

Net10 sells a variety of popular phone options for Android and iOS, but most of the latest models don’t qualify for a discount.

  • Get an iPhone XR for just $400 with the purchase of a plan
  • Get an iPhone 7 for just $200 with a no-fee payment plan for 24 months
  • Get a Samsung Galaxy A10e for just $100 with a no-fee payment plan for 24 months
  • Get a Samsung Galaxy A01 for just $60 with the purchase of a plan

Net10 plans

Customers can choose from a wide range of prepaid phone plans, including a pay-as-you-go option with a carryover benefit.

Pricing per month plus taxes. Additional fees and terms may apply. As of 11/03/20.

When you get a prepaid phone plan from Net10, you simply activate the SIM card online or through the app, buy your preferred plan and get access to your data. It’s really that simple. Net10 customers also have the option to enroll in auto-refill, which can save you a few dollars.

All of Net10’s phone plans come with unlimited talk and text, plus unlimited data. The plans all start at 4G LTE speeds, but after you hit your data limit, the speed is throttled down to just 2G — enough to (very slowly) load a webpage. Customers who enroll multiple phones on the same plan can get $10 off each additional line, but only if they’re all on auto refill.

Net10 also offers basic phone plans, which are pay-as-you-go. There are five plans available that range from 200 to 1,500 minutes, and they all include carry over benefits. Net10 offers one non-carryover benefit plan for 1,000 minutes. Additionally, customers have a few options for add-ons, including a $10 pay-as-you-go global calling card.

If you’re still hanging onto your landline phone, Net10 has you covered. The company offers two unlimited plan options for landline phones. There’s also a mobile hotspot option if you want to tether other devices to your phone’s data connection.

How do Net10’s prices compare?

When it comes to price, Net10 stacks up pretty well against competitors. At just $4.79 per gig, it’s only slightly more expensive than Mint Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile’s prepaid plans. For unlimited data, it’s priced on par with most other providers.

Even though Net10 is cheap, you pay for what you get. If you blow through a lot of data, be prepared to run out of high-speed data each month. You’ll get stuck with 2G when you hit your limit, which is a dealbreaker for some people.

Net10 is a decent option for someone who doesn’t use their phone too often, or at least not for data-intensive activities, like streaming and internet browsing. Here’s a quick breakdown of how Net10’s prices compare to other prepaid phone companies.

*Unlimited plans not factored in.
**Introductory rates, also available with 12-month renewal
All plans include unlimited talk and text. Pricing per month plus taxes. Additional fees and terms may apply. As of 11/06/20.

Net10 deals

Net10 doesn’t offer many deals, unless you bundle a new phone and plan purchase.

Net10 doesn’t offer exciting perks like some other prepaid phone companies. There’s no free subscription to Amazon Prime, or Visa Gift Card when you sign up for a new plan. However, there are a few ways that you can save money.

We found that Net10 usually runs deals when you buy select phones with a prepaid plan. Right now, you can get an iPhone XR 64GB for $150 off the retail price when you buy a plan. Other phones, like the iPhone 7 32GB, come with a no-fee, two-year contract when you get a plan.

The other savings option is to sign up for auto-refill. With almost any phone plan, you can save a few dollars each month if you set your phone to autopay. Even with auto-refill, you still have the option to cancel your plan at any time without a fee.

Net10 coverage

Net10 customers get coast-to-coast access to fast 4G LTE speeds on AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon.

Net10 is one of the only prepaid phone carriers that runs on the four biggest networks. Based on where you’re located, Net10 will automatically connect you to the strongest signal in your area. The best connection at your house could be AT&T, but at work, it’s T-Mobile. That means you can count on getting reliable coverage no matter where you are.

How is Net10’s 5G network?

Because Net10 runs on all four major networks, the 5G capabilities are among the best for prepaid carriers. Customers who can get access to T-Mobile in their area will have the best results with 5G. According to Speedtest, T-Mobile has a majority of the commercial 5G deployments in the U.S.

However, customers who can access Verizon’s 5G network will experience the fastest speeds. Verizon’s 5G speed score was 870.50, significantly faster than second-runner-up AT&T, which had a score of 78.68.

Although 5G networks are still fairly limited, we noticed that Net10 does sell a few 5G-enabled phones for customers who live in an area where 5G is available. Some examples include the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, One Plus 8 Pro 5G and Motorola Edge 5G.

How does Net10 compare to other prepaid phone companies?

Overall, Net10 is a good prepaid phone company — but only for some people. The company offers a wide variety of phones, a few customizable plans and affordable prices.

Although you can use as much data as you want, the amount of high-speed data you receive is one the low side. Net10 probably doesn’t cut it for people who use their phone for games, streaming or frequent internet browsing.

On the other hand, Net10 is a suitable option for someone who doesn’t use that much data, and is looking for a cheap phone plan. Compared to competitors, Net10’s price per GB is only slightly more expensive than Mint Mobile, the cheapest carrier we reviewed. And if you sign up for auto refill, you can save anywhere from $2 to $5/mo.

If you need to contact Net10 for customer service, there are a few ways you can get in touch:

Net10 FAQs

Who owns Net10?

Net10 is owned by Tracfone.

Where can you buy Net10 phones?

You can buy Net10 phones through its website. You can shop the full catalog of smartphones on one page and the sale/promotional phones on another page.

What network does Net10 use?

Net10 uses the networks of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Should you switch to Net10?

Based on our evaluation, Net10 is a good option for people who use their phone primarily for talking and texting. If you need more than 2GB of data per month, you can find cheaper plans through other prepaid companies.

That said, because Net10 operates on all four major networks, you can get reliable coverage anywhere in the country. There are only a few other companies that offer the same coverage for a low rate. Net10 also has no contracts and no cancellation fees, so if you’re unhappy with the speed or service, it’s easy to switch to another provider.

Great app!

Very easy to use and helpful when buying or adding airtime to my phone. I always just buy airtime so I don’t have to actually go buy a card from the store, it’s great! The app even gives you the autopay options and gives a discount on the bill every month if you set it up. All in all great app, thanks!

Hi, Sra.Reyes! We're very pleased to know that you find our app great! Thank you for your positive feedback and 5-star rating. Have a lovely day ahead! ^Wendy

Great App, Love the new update GUI

Been a loyal customer for almost 10 years now, use the app everyday. Love how I can redeem reward points, look at how much data Ive used and see exactly when my monthly payment will be deducted from my bank account.

Only question I have is it possible to transfer my number to a new sim card using the app? (I already have a new nano-sim card, the only reason I need to transfer my number to the new one is because my current sim card is the older large sized card and doesn't fit in newer phones sim card slot). I'm using the BYOP program, and don't need to make any changes to my account, except for making sure my number is still on my account but using the new sim card I purchased.

Hi phlooke. If there's a transfer option on the app, yes, you can do that. You can also do the transfer on our website. We'd love as well to help you transfer your phone number to the new SIM card. You may chat with us at or call us at 1-877-430-2355. We're open Monday-Sunday from 8:00 AM to 11:45 PM EST. You can also text HELP to 611611. Thank you. ^Ramel

Nice when it works

Loved it at first but now it messes up every time I open it. The app is very convenient when it comes to auto pay and data usage but it never works anymore. First it just wouldn’t ever refresh my data so I could see how much I’ve used and now it just flat out won’t let me log in. It also doesn’t tell you when your money will be taken out of your bank account or when your next bill will be due. The app also logged me out and it’s telling me that there’s no account associated with my phone number when I try to log in. Like I said it’s very convenient when it’s actually working but it definitely needs some work.

Hi, Ariyonniyia. We're truly sorry for any negative experience you may have encountered with our App and service. Your feedback provides our company the ability to learn more from our mistakes in hopes of creating a better customer experience. To help us serve you better in the future, just feel free to chat with us at or call 1-877-836-2368. For your convenience, our representatives are available Monday-Sunday from 8:00 AM to 11:45 PM EST. You can also use our self-service menu by simply texting the word HELP to 611611. Thank you. ^Wendy
