How to Pick a Baby Name
How are the top baby girl names chosen?
The SSA compiles their list of the most popular baby names for boys and girls every year using data from U.S. Social Security Card applications. The most recent data available is for 2020, which the list above references.
Baby girl names that are rising in popularity
From 2010 to 2019, the most popular baby girl names remained the same: Emma, Olivia, Ava, Isabella and Sophia were the top names every single year, varying exact rankings in the top five. But in 2020, a new contender made the top five: Charlotte cinched the number four baby girl name, pushing Isabella down to spot seven. (Amelia took the number six spot in 2020, moving up one place from the year prior.) Meanwhile, Olivia, Emma and Ava remained the first, second and third most popular names for baby girls respectively for the second year in a row.
Names that end with the letter "A" are a popular choice for many parents in 2021. Other popular baby girl names include Mia, Camila and Gianna. The rest of the list is filled with classic and modern baby girl names alike, from Elizabeth to Nova.
While the top three baby girl names have remained the same since 2016 (Emma, Olivia and Ava in varying order), other girl names are on the rise. The name Charlotte, for example, went from number 46 in 2010 to number four in 2020. The name Gianna, too, rose from number 79 in 2019 to number 12 in 2020. The names Evelyn and Camila have also been on the rise in recent years.
It’s clear that unique baby girl names are also popular. From 2019 to 2020, the names that increased most in popularity were all rather unique, perhaps suggesting that not-so-common baby girl names will continue to be popular in 2021. For example, the name Capri jumped 608 spots, Haisley surged 382 spots and Wrenley rose 310 spots. Other trending names for baby girls include Avayah, Denisse, Jianna, Rosalia and Zhuri.
Baby girl names that were popular 100 years ago
The SSA's list of the most popular baby girl names looked a little different back in the 1920s, when the top 10 featured Mary, Dorothy, Helen, Betty, Margaret, Ruth, Virginia, Doris, Mildred and Frances, in that order.
Also popular in the 1920s: Names starting with "E" (Elizabeth, Evelyn, Eleanor, Edna, Edith and Ethel were all in the top 50), names starting with "M" (in addition to Mary, Margaret and Mildred, Marie, Marjorie, Martha and Marion were popular choices) and shorter names ending with "E" (such as Alice, Irene, Rose, Louise, Annie and Grace).
Still, sometimes a name will come back in style. Emma, for example, was the thirteenth most popular girl name in 1900 and remained popular in the 1920s. It bottomed out at number 463 in 1976, but is now in the number two spot.

Baby Girl Names - Fun Facts & Some Tips for Choosing
Top 1,000 Baby Boy Names
Special Considerations
Middle Names
The traditional number of names in the United States is three names—a first name, a middle name, and your family or last name. However, there are many families who have a tradition of two middle names, or no middle name at all. It's up to you how many names your daughter will have, but it's certainly something to consider.
If a middle name (or names) is important to you, think about how the two, three, or more names will pair together. Do the syllables of the names flow together? What do the initials spell out? Taking the time to run through these questions and consider your options will help ensure you find the perfect name for your little one.
Shared Names
Naming a baby for a family member is a tradition a lot of families share, but the execution of sharing names can be very different. In some traditions, it is common to designate the mother's last name into the child's official name as a middle name. In others, it might be about continuing the use of a favorite family name.
Outside of family, think about the popular (or unpopular) famous or historical figures who will share your baby girl's name. Are they the individuals you want your daughter to be associated with? For better or worse, the association with a famous person who shares the same name will likely follow your child throughout their lives so take special care to make sure it's a good one!
Gender-Neutral Names
There are plenty of amazing gender-neutral names out there, so don't forget to consider them when coming up with your list of top names for your baby girl.
About This List
Every year around Mother's Day, the Social Security Administration usually releases the most popular baby names from the previous year. The list above refers to the top 1,000 baby girl names from 2020, as determined by birth certificate data.
If you need help choosing your baby's name, or would just like to look through some of the most popular baby names throughout the year—as far back as the 1800s—the Social Security Administration's website is a great baby-naming resource.

Earlier versions of her name, including Ennoguent, Innoguend, and Innoguent, were found in Brittany from the 9th-11th centuries.
