Front Door Speakers:

The front doors were equipped with 6.5″ speakers in the lower door and tweeters built into the front door sail panel. Replacing the speakers in the Toyota Corolla is a bit of a chore. Rear Deck Speakers:

The rear deck (behind the rear seats) came equipped with speakers that resemble 6×9″ speakers.

Front Door Speakers:

Using our heavy duty speaker adapters we installed a set of 6.75″ Kicker Component Speakers in the front doors of this Toyota Corolla. In addition, we modified the stock sail panels and installed the the tweeters in the same location. The front door tweeter and speakers are “tied” together. If you remove the stock tweeter(s) you will lose the front door speaker. We offer a plug and adapter that plugs directly into the stock wiring location for both the stock tweeter and the stock speaker. No cutting or splicing necessary. You can use component speaker or standard coaxial speakers with our harness adapters.  Use our pre-packaged setup or build your own and get the harnesses and other parts you need from our shopping cart.

Plug and Play Amplifier:

Upgrading your speakers is a great way to improve sound, but without increasing the power you will not get much performance from your aftermarket speakers. Our plug and play amplifier system will boost your stock system from 15 watts to 70 watts (RMS). Over 4x the power. Plus it is completely plug and play. Hello,

I am looking into getting better sound quality from my stock deck in my 2010 Corolla (non JBL w/ 4 speakers). I am not interesting in changing the deck for the time being but just looking into upgrading the stock speakers.

The speaker specs are as follows:

Front: 6 1/2 "
Rear: 6 x 9"

Also, I am on a limited budget (less than $200 w/o tax for all 4 speakers excluding installation).

Can you guys please recommend me?

- good quality speakers given my budget?
- good installers in GTA? (I prefer to avoid FS and BB)

My younger brother just had this upgrade done in his '10 Corolla S. He went with the Alpine Type-S (I believe that's the correct model). Did a full component set up in the front - replacing the tweeter and a set of 6x9 to match in the rear. He's still running it all through the stock deck but there is a pretty big difference in terms of clarity. Next step is to amp the speakers soon with a Class D amplifier.

Cost of speakers: Just a tad over $200 as there was a special on these at the local future shop. Installation was done by my buddy who works for one of the larger car audio stores in the city (not fs/bb).

For your budget, you can probably get away with a set of Alpine (Type - E maybe) or some low end Infinity's. Installation isn't that hard if you can do it yourself and want to save $$$. Maybe an hour at the most.

Those are pretty good, and should be flush enough that they would fit.
Otherwise, you could go to local shops and see if you can swing a deal with install as well. Also find out how much going to a component set would cost with install, as this will give you better SQ with the better placement of the tweeters.

it would be wise to change the deck before the speakers...
basically the deck is the brain of the audio system.. thus by upgrading the deck will improve your speakers.

Basic steps to basic car audio success:

1. Fade the rear speakers out to start with (fader all the way to the front). Do not replace the rear speakers. If you want to do anything with them, throw them in the garbage; otherwise just leave them be, unpowered.

2. Put in a decent component set for the money like the Phoenix Gold RSd (discontinued now I think but lots on eBay still I'm sure). Add a decent 2ch amp (you will need one with speaker-level input or you will need an LOC going off the factory HU) and you should be sounding much better for around $200 already (though wiring for the amp may put you a little above this).

3. When you get some more money, sound deaden the doors with a few layers (inner and outer skin) of mat product (Dynamat, Raamat, eDead, etc.). This will make a night/day difference.

4. Get that factory HU out of there; again, when you have the money for it.

aftermarket speakers on oem deck is worse than aftermarket deck on oem speakers.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I ended up buying MTX speakers from Futureshop and had it installed from there as well (I know I wanted to avoid them but they were willing to install right away and all other places were booked till next week). I can definitely notice a sound difference and the lows/mids/highs are more distinct than the OEM speakers. I know for sure that the full potential of my speakers will be unleashed once I replace the stock deck.

I will be getting a JVC double din deck as soon as there is a sale on this specific unit (JVC KW-XR810)that I want.

The full potential will not be unleashed until you amp them separately and deaden the doors.
I don't keep that up to date on all the HUs out there these days, but that one looks pretty good. Looks like the XR810 has a better D/A, Bluetooth, and a 3rd set of pre-outs over the XR610. Also the screen is a higher density dot-matrix design whereas the XR610 is still dot-matrix but it's in the style of a multi-segment display. So the XR810 can display more info which is a plus. One possible downside however is if it has a lot of info in a small space, it can be difficult to read for some.

Again though, you will have a world of difference if you add an amp to the system as head unit power will really not do your speakers any justice. Head units tend to max out at around 20W/ch and with a relatively high distortion figure, and accordingly, pretty much no headroom. If you amp aftermarket speakers with a head unit, don't be surprised when it doesn't sound all that great. Even a cheap low-power rating seperate amp will sound far better than a head unit.

Thanks for the info. Very detailed indeed. So you are saying I shouldn't bother with a head unit but invest in an amp?

Youre not going to get the real sound from the speakers til after about 20hrs or so of breaking them in. In the meantime dont crank them and lower the bass through them cause over time it wrecks speakers.

Let me say one thing. If you get a deck, you better upgrade the speakers too and add an amp and sub at the very least. I came from a stock cassette deck to stock speakers, not one thing upgraded in the car. Im a huge music lover but at first i didnt want to spend a lot on a sound system, i wanted to keep it simple and basic. So tHe first thing i did was upgrade my deck, it sounded much better even with my stock speakers. Dont do what I did at first and buy a cheap budget $100 one. When it comes to car audio you really do get what you pay for. My first deck was a $100 JVC, it was decent but no sound customization at all and very basic. So I upgraded to a $200 pioneer and let me tell you the difference between the two in sound quality alone is night and day.

My advice, pay the bit extra for a pioneer or a deck with more features cause eventually you will want to tinker with your sound. So the next day I upgraded my speakers and trashed my stock ones. Night and day difference its not even funny. I wasnt planning on getting a sub cause i didnt want to get into the crazy sub, amp, kit setup but trust me, you will miss the bass. Music without bass just feels so flat and lifeless. You can have $400 speakers and a nice deck but if you have no sub to put out that bass, it makes your stereo sound cheap. So then I added a bazooka marine sub at first, it has an amp built in and a very basic 2 wire amp kit. Again, i made the mistake of cheaping out on car audio. It was decent but not great. So over a couple weeks i wanted more power cause it was only 100W.

So i sold all that and upgrade my sub to a 300W 10'' JL audio and added a 400W kicker amp, massive difference. Then after all that was done, I cleaned up my install and mounted my amp to the back of my backseat under the carpet with all the wires under. Absolutely clean setup, no wires shown. Then I sound deadened my trunk with dynamat and acrylic felt ($5 for 2ftx2ft pack at michaels).

I had a prof. car installer tell me about felt...its actually a very decent sound deadener that is a lot cheaper than dynamat. Its not going to work as good as dynamat but its also $5 for a pack and 3 packs covered my entire trunk and trunk lid.

Much like home theatre setup, where the front stage is where it is most important. Rear fill is just that, for light fill, and depending on how the audio is set up in front, the rear fill may not be needed.

Not everyone wants that deep bass. I would recommend going with a component setup (tweeter + midbass) and an amp, as that will give better SQ to start with, and midbass is very important in a system, imo. I wouldn't go with a sub first for someone wanting just a bit more bass to start off with, as that can be too much, along with the trunk space given up.

I'm pretty sure his 02 civic has pioneer speakers. My 04 civic has pioneer speakers stock. Before you guys even ask, no they weren't an option. Yeah, they are crap, and can easily be blown. They are paper cone speakers. However, they still are pioneer speakers.

Hey I never said they were the greatest, but they sound good for stock speakers and even better w/an aftermarket deck.

I also added MTX component crossover's(I had laying around from an older car) to my fronts to clean up the high/mid frequencies.

My 08 Accord's speakers aren't that bad to be honest. But I have no clue which company supplies them for the new gen.

Where did you get that crossover unit? I am going to be getting the EXACT same one as all speakers in my car are MTX. I am not going to buy a deck anymore, instead I will invest in an amp, tweeters, crossover unit so that I can have a component setup going on.

UPDATE: Just had rear speakers installed in my car today (front ones were installed 3-4 days ago) and the sound quality is at least 3x better than stock ones. I don't crank up my bass all that much but my previous stock speakers used to rattle/distort at mid bass levels. The new MTX speakers give me a smooth "OOMPH" bass without the annoying rattle. I can only imagine it being better with an added amp and front tweeters + crossover. That will happen within 1-2 weeks.

I have a question about how faders/balancers and speakers work
One of my car speakers blew this week and trying to figure out how the hell it happened. I got it fixed today but not too happy about having to already buy a new pair of speakers. They werent cheap!

1) When you adjust the balance in a car deck does it basically subtract the volume from one speaker and add it onto the other?

2) Can this cause a speaker to get overworked? Cause i had my balance to 60% front and 40% back, basically 20% more towards the fronts.

The thing I dont get is my car speakers are 65Watts RMS (im guessing thats each speaker?). My deck only outputs 50W per channel so how the hell does a speaker blow is the deck cant even put out the speakers RMS?

Right now im too scared to play with the balance anymore so im just gonna leave it at flat 0.

- I don't think so. There is something called the continuous RMS power supplied to each speaker at all times. By reducing volume from one of the speakers, the rest of them still function normally without any extra load of volume. Let's say you fade the front speakers and according to you, the rear ones will have added volume. That's not the case as the amount of RMS power supplied to the rear speakers doesn't change. When I fade any of my two speakers, I don't feel the other two speakers going "louder". You simply feel that effect because your front ones now have less volume that the rear ones. It's more of a psychological thing.

2) Can this cause a speaker to get overworked? Cause i had my balance to 60% front and 40% back, basically 20% more towards the fronts.

Again I don't think so with the same explanation as above.

Like I said I am no expert in car audio so I could be wrong.

I honestly don't know how one of your speakers blew. Are you running an amp in your car?
