BATAVIA, Ohio – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series has announced the cancellation of the Super Bowl of Racing at Georgia’s Golden Isles Speedway that was scheduled for Jan. 21-23.
The series has opened its season at Golden Isles Speedway since 2014, but with the rise of COVID-19 cases in the region, the team at Golden Isles Speedway has opted to cancel the event.
“It’s been a very difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Super Bowl of Racing,” said officials from Golden Isles Speedway. “We feel that we must prioritize the health and safety of those that make such an event great – drivers, crew members, spectators, sponsors, vendors, and other patrons. We are disappointed in this development, but we feel it’s something we must do. We look forward to working with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series to host the Super Bowl of Racing in 2022 – as we all know and love.”
The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will now open its season on Jan. 25 at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Fla.
Golden Isles Speedway to close
The Golden Isles Speedway, touted as one of the best dirt tracks in the region, has shut its doors and is up for sale or lease.
Owner Frankie Lloyd said the business got to be too demanding.
"I've had enough," he said Wednesday en route to his Jacksonville home. "I've just turned 65 and this racetrack will wear you down."
The last races, a make-up for February's rained out Super Bowl of Racing, were run at the speedway March 5-6. Lloyd said he had considered making it through this year's racing season, which would've run through October, but other things took priority.
"I love it, I always will, but we've adopted three of our grandchildren, ages 3, 5 and 10, and it's just gotten to be too much to keep up with," he said.
Brunswick welding shop owner Charles Stokes has raced his three cars at the Golden Isles Speedway for years. He said Lloyd's decision to close the speedway didn't come as a complete surprise, but nonetheless was a shock.
"We've sort of been expecting it for a year," he said, "but then Frankie said he was going to run this season. It sounded like it was going to start off good, but then all of a sudden it was gone."
Lloyd said the track officially closed last week when he posted the news on his website. He has listed for sale or lease the 56 acres of the speedway and facilities, plus an adjoining 45-acre tract. He intends to keep an additional 130 acres for potential future development.
The speedway on U.S. 82 in western Glynn County opened in 1967. Lloyd and his wife, Jackie, bought in seven years ago and set out to improve its image and facilities.
"Everybody is telling me they hate to see it go because it's the best racetrack around," he said.
Stokes, who will keep racing elsewhere, agrees.
"We're going to go to Waycross, and we'll probably go to Screven and back to Savannah, and maybe to Tifton, but none of those racetracks is as good as the one Frankie Lloyd has there."
Jackie Lloyd ran the speedway's food concession, and became known for her chicken and rice.
"She didn't want me to close it," Lloyd said. "She's actually one of the hardest working women you've ever seen in your life."
Lloyd said he's already gotten a few phone calls from people interested in owning or leasing the speedway.
"I hope somebody will take it over and run it," he said. "There's money to be made at this track. If they do, I'll be right there watching the races."
Driver Brad Kinchen said he hopes so, too.
"I know it costs a lot to operate something like this, but if I had the money, I'd do it," Kinchen said.

2006 Lucas Oil Series Crew Chief of the Year Jason Fitzgerald to Race This Weekend at Golden Isles Speedway
CALLAHAN, FL (December 27, 2006) Jason Fitzgerald, crew chief for the 2006 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Champion driver Earl Pearson Jr. will compete in two late model events this weekend at Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Ga Friday Dec 29 and Sat Dec 30th. Jason will be piloting the Murrell Mixon Motorsports Mastersbilt Chassis in the National Late Model Series sanctioned events that will pay $3000 to the winner each night. Jason will have his former crew chief Ronnie Blair and Earl Pearson Jr. the 2006 World 100 winner in his pit this weekend to crew on his Mastersbilt Chassis.
Jason is no stranger to the cockpit of late models or Golden Isles Speedway.
Before being hired to crew chief for Earl Pearson Jr. for the 2006 season, Jason was a well respected and winning late model driver in the southeast competing in numerous Carolina Clash, Southern All-Stars and various late model events in the south. Jason won the track championship in the late model division at Putnam County Speedway in Palatka Florida in 2003 driving for Southeast Motorsports.
Jason is also instrumental in the design and development of the highly successful SHARK Modified Chassis by Southeast Motorsports. Jason won several modified events driving a SHARK Modified at Golden Isles Speedway including a big win this past March during an off-weekend from his crew chief duties for Earl Pearson Jr. and the Dunn-Benson Ford Motorsports team.
Jason has just recently been hired to crew chief for the new Bobby Labonte Motorsports dirt late model team and driver Earl Pearson Jr. for the 2007 season and he is very excited about the opportunity to work for Bobby Labonte and Earl.
“To get an opportunity to work for Bobby Labonte Motorsports is great honor to me. I have to thank Carlton and Kemp Lamm and Dunn-Benson Ford Motorsports for giving me a chance to work for them. They are great people and without their trust in me I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunities that I have now. I’m really excited to get to work with Earl again for 2007 and looking forward to winning that 4th national championship in a row with him”, stated Jason.’
Jason will be piloting a Mastersbilt Chassis this weekend for Jacksonville Florida’s Murrell Mixon. Murrell Mixon Motorsports also fielded race cars for Earl Pearson Jr. in the mid 1990’s on the National Late Model Series and has gotten to know Jason and Ronnie while racing in the southeast over the past several years. “It’s going too be fun to get behind the wheel again for me this weekend. Murrell asked me a couple of weeks ago to drive his car at this event and I jumped at the opportunity. He has really good equipment and he’s a great car owner to drive for. So it should be fun to race with Murrell, Ronnie and maybe I’ll get Earl to wrench a little on the car and get him dirty for a change”, stated Jason.
