    Classic ring

    We ordered my husband the Cobalt chrome™ 6mm Comfort-Fit Satin-Finished Round Edge Design Ring during one of James Allen's sales and couldn't be more impressed with the design and durability of the ring. The ring we ordered ended up being a half size too large but they have a great re-size program that's 12 months long and we were able to send the ring back within that time period. The turnaround was so quick, 1.5 weeks, for the resized ring. We couldn't believe it!

    As my fiance has never worn a ring before, we wanted to get him something that he didn't have to worry about scratches or damaging during everyday life. I am also happy to report they allow 1 year for resizing of rings which is really nice if you want to test a ring out in the summer to make sure your swollen finger will still fit the ring.

    Overall, it was a super easy process and would recommend to anyone looking for a wedding band.

    Dream Ring!

    In LOVE with my ring

    My fiancé spent a long time trying to find a ring that “was good enough for me.” He ended up designing his own on the James Allen website and it’s perfect! He was able to customize everything. We also ordered the matching wedding band for me which was another great experience!

    I love the fact that you can see the diamonds so clearly at the website and the value was competitive. The problem with other websites is they do not give you the wonderful views of the diamonds like James Allen, making a difficult decision much easier. Its actually much easier seeing flaws than through a jewelers loop. The customer service was terrific. I emailed a request that they rush my delivery by a few days so proposal plan could come together. I got an immediate reply saying they would try very hard to accommodate my request. Shortly after they changed the tracking delivery date and the ring arrived exactly when I requested and my fiancé loves it!

    I purchased my now fiancés wedding band off James Allen and couldn’t be more pleased. I went with the Platinum metal and got a nice diamond. When I received the ring, I got an individual assessment of the ring and was valued at quite a bit more than I paid.

    Customer service is fantastic and is actually 24/7! I’ve emailed them at 2am and have had responses.

    We’ve just ordered he matching wedding band - they were having a 25% off sale so we saved a decent amount of money.

    Bottom line - feel safe and comfortable purchasing your ring here, great quality, beautiful ring, my wife to be absolutely loves it.

    The most gorgeous ring

    I absolutely love my engagement ring. It is so gorgeous and sparkly, I get compliments constantly. They were easy to work with and when my husband decided he wanted a different shape 3 weeks before he was set to propose, they got it to him just in time. I would definitely recommend James Allen. You get better quality for less money because they don't have the overhead a brick and mortar store does.

    My fiancé chose James Allen after friends of ours had also used James Allen for their ring purchase. I had no idea what I wanted, so I did some looking around and decided I wanted a pave setting with a round stone. I told my now fiancé what I wanted and let him choose the diamond. He did not disappoint! According to him, the whole process was easier than expected. My favorite part about James Allen (I mean, besides the ring, of course!) is the beautiful box it comes in. It is like a presentation all on its own!

Make no mistake; James Allen should not be compared to Blue Nile or Zales in any shape or form. Their higher prices are a reflection of the expertise which goes into creating every ring but the margin of difference is not as wide as you would expect it to be.

When you consider you can see what you are buying from James Allen, and the accreditation that comes with those items, it should be a no brainer which e-commerce site you head to first.

If you have the budget and are looking for higher quality diamonds also take a look at Whiteflash and their A Cut Above diamonds. If not head to Blue Nile or Costco for a more affordable diamond engagement ring.

The Company

The business ethos of James Allen is simple; offer their customers the best quality of diamonds at the best possible prices. They operate solely online in order to reduce overheads and pass these savings onto their customers.

All the diamonds sold on the company’s website are certified by AGS or  GIA, the best respected gem labs in the business. This gives their customers the reassurance that they are buying the quality they expect. James Allen pride themselves on ensuring that every piece of jewelry they sell has undergone a stringent quality control process.

The History

The company was founded in 1998 by husband and wife team James Allen and Michele Schultz. They called themselves dirtcheapdiamonds.com and quickly became one of the first truly successful online jewelry retailers. As is the case with several jewelry retailers, Blue Nile being another, JA was formed following its founder becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of choice when it came to searching for an engagement ring. This became their signature product and one they are still renowned for today.

In 2005 the e-commerce platform R2Net was formed which joined forces with the company. The retail brand name became JamesAllen.com and the company’s entire marketing strategy was turned on its head.

The cheap image was replaced by one way more sophisticated and they became to sell diamonds accredited by the leading authorities. While competitors have come and gone JA are still enjoying great success and now, in 2015, are one of the leading name in online jewelry sales.

Exclusivity

One of the areas James Allen prides themselves on is their selection of fancy color diamonds. These are extremely rare, very precious and a wonderful of way of adding that personal touch to a piece of jewelry. Yellow, pink, blue, green and brown diamonds positively dazzle when placed in their unique settings, ensuring the receiver of such a ring will be blown away. And judging by the reviews, the lucky ladies who have been proposed to with one of these rings have felt extra special when one was slipped on their finger.

Designer & Custom Items

Royal Halo and Mille Couers are two highly respected names who sell their pieces through the James Allen website.  Royal Halo design jewelry that has the maximum brilliance and impact. Mille Couers specialize in colored gemstones to add an extra dimension to their stunning designs.

Both companies pride themselves on the quality of the jewelry they produce and this is a big thumbs up for James Allen that they have chosen them as retail partners.

The ‘Design Your Own Engagement Ring’ service is a great and the vast majority of the rings are created using this method. Only the Royal Halo and Mille Coeurs collections are sold preset. Yes, this service is offered by most of the top online diamond retailers but we liked the simplicity of this one.

Design Your Own

You can start with either the stone or the setting and once you click on your option you are taken to another screen to pull the whole thing together. We chose to kick off with the stone and this offers you a multitude of choices including price, shape and color of stone, cut, clarity, carat and even the origin of the stone.

Once we had chosen our stone, a radiant cut pink diamond, we moved onto the setting and selected a classic solitaire in 18k white gold. One last click and there was our ring in front of us!

It would have been nice to see the stone actually in the setting rather than in a small image in the top left hand corner and this is an area where maybe a bit of technological tweaking is called for. When they have gone to such lengths to make this such a fun experience this feels a bit of let down at the very end.

Highest Possible Quality

As you would expect from a top end retailer much emphasis is placed on the 4 C’s when they refer to the quality of the gemstones and jewelry they have on offer.

Every gemstone carries an accreditation from either  AGS, GIA or IGI. This is your reassurance that the gemstone you are spending all that money on is what is claims to be and is not a cheap stone being passed off as one of a higher quality. If you’re looking for Hearts and Arrows Diamonds though I would still head to Whiteflash as they offer a better all round service.

James Allen and Blue Nile have the largest market share of the online diamond industry. They have a similar business model in that they sell diamonds from other vendors as their own. That is where the similarity ends however. JA have access to the 50,000 diamonds in their inventory whereas Blue Nile do not. They appraise the stones they are going to sell to ensure they are of the pristine quality the company is renowned for.

The Website

Considering the fact that James Allen sell purely online the initial impression of their website was a tad disappointing. The minimalist effect they have gone for, with the onus on imagery, isn’t unpleasant it just lacks zip.

The old saying never judge a book by its cover could have been coined for this site however once you get past the somewhat underwhelming home page it is actually a very efficient and user friendly e-commerce site. Easy navigation and some very nice features, one of which we look at in more detail in the next section, give the intended impression that you are shopping with a top end company.

The customary FAQ section is succinct but covers most, if not all, bases and there are other options available if you want more info. For those who want to know more about the diamonds they are interested in the real time consultation is particularly impressive.

Pick your stone, fill in your name and phone number, and an expert will call you to talk you through the attributes of that particular gem. There is also a phone number on the home page and a live chat option which claim to be 24/7 but nobody was prepared to get up at 4am to test them out!

Another good idea which could have been so much better is the ring sizing wizard. It was all looking good until we had to calibrate the screen using a credit card or driving license, this didn’t work too well for us but that may have been due to our impatience.

There have been independent reviews regarding this service where customers rings have been too big on arrival and they are wary of returning them in case they end up too small. This is definitely an area where an immediate overhaul is in order.

The overall impression of the James Allen website is a B, with the comment “could do better”. Many will disagree with me but having reviewed numerous sites of this kind there are better ones out there.

The Imagery

This area is, for me anyway, the star of the James Allen website. You peruse the rings, click on the one you like and by moving the cursor over the image it rotates 360°.

The Shopping Experience

Not much to complain about in this area at all. The site is easy to navigate, the ring creation great fun and a smooth, easy checkout. The only bit I didn’t like about the check out is that you have to log in to continue and having the option to log in via Facebook is kind of defeating the object if you are buying a ring in secret to make a proposal.

The multiple payment options are good, as is the opportunity to get finance for a particularly large purchase. Considering my custom made ring totaled an eye watering $164,770 this would be the only way many could afford to pay for such a piece.

The Information on Offer

James Allen are pretty big on educating their clients on the various aspects of the gems they sell and have a dedicated education tab to serve this purpose. While not as in-depth as the likes of Whiteflash it does the job and will undoubtedly assist those who want the perfect ring for their lady but know very little about the differences between the actual stones.

The Choice

As James Allen work with many selected partners the choice of stones and rings is slightly overwhelming. Granted, every page makes it easy for you to narrow down the field quickly but a slightly scaled down catalog would do them no harm.

Women will love this site, men will be baffled by it. You cannot knock them for offering their customers as much choice as possible they just seem to have gotten carried away a bit.

The Packaging

Lacquered red boxes containing white satin is the packaging of choice for James Allen. Very understated and uncluttered, I like these boxes as they hit the right note between heightening anticipation without being ostentatious. They also do larger boxes which have a small drawer feature at the bottom. These can double as a keepsake box which is a nice touch.

The Returns Policy

The company promises that if you aren’t totally satisfied with your order you can return it within 30 days for an exchange or a full refund. They pay for the return shipping for US customers and all customers are limited to 3 returns.

There is a charge of $25 for re-polishing if an engraved item it returned. The returns procedure is rather long winded and can be found in full in their FAQ section. near the bottom.

Bottom Line

This pained me somewhat as I like James Allen and their overall business model. However, their website is definitely lacking in some areas and as this is their sole retail outlet it should be spot on. The features I found fault with are brilliant by design but when they have been implemented into the site they haven’t fared so well.

4 out of 5 is nothing to be ashamed of, and they fare way better than other sites I have reviewed. However, when compared to a website of the caliber of Whiteflash there is no way I could give them a 5.

James Allen have been extremely clever in plugging that gap in the market between the very best companies such as Tiffany’s and the cheap and not always cheerful end of the market a la Zales.  Their business model holds up extremely well in the 21st century and any girl getting an engagement ring from James Allen is a very lucky lady.

Beautifully crafted and sparkle

Amazing service and perfectly timed. James Allen I thank you for the discreet mailing box, my now fiancé never seen it coming. The ring is beautiful and I couldn’t imagine it any different. However for some odd reason it fits her a tad bigger than all her other size 5 rings.

Very Nice Experience

I had a very nice experience with James Allen. I ordered the ring and it was due to arrive several days before my vacation where I proposed to my girlfriend. A few days before it was due to arrive, they told me that there may be a delay of one business day. However, they said they would reach out to the jeweler and tell them of my plans and the limited time frame to receive the ring. It was originally due to arrive on a Friday, so if it was late, it wouldn't have arrived until after the weekend, so I was concerned. Surprisingly, the ring arrived one day earlier than originally expected! My now-fiancée also said it is like she picked the ring out herself. I definitely recommend James Allen. :)

Quality and Sparkle

Beautiful, timeless sparkle in a size that is perfect for everyday. I chose the 1carat, in white gold. The earrings arrived on time, with great communication about the delivery. They look exactly as shown online, and in-person are well made, a great thickness, and very sturdy with secure locking clasps. I am very pleased with the quality of this purchase and a previous purchase of a necklace, and hope to add more JA pieces to my collection!

Communication is Everything …

It took 2 1/2 months to get our ring back from repair. Communication was awful! In the beginning they were on it, but as weeks progressed, and multiple times of trying to call the service department, we never heard back. We called multiple times, and every time, there’s only one person to speak with. He was either gone for the day, on vacation, or on lunch. My wife had to finally reach out to our insurance agent who was able to get a hold of somebody. Then it was supposed to be sent and got pulled back because It didn’t pass inspection. I’m glad that they were on thorough to make sure ourring was perfect, but a little communication would go along way.

Amazing experience from beginning to end!!!! I ordered some earrings that arrived quickly, beautifully packaged and were unbelievably priced! I, unfortunately read the description wrong and decided to send them back (carat weight is total for both not for each). What a great experience

What a great experience! Yes, I was skeptical of ordering a ring online but a couple that I love and trust recommended James Allen to me. After using the site and stepping into one brick and mortar store in search of a ring I knew I would make my purchase from James Allen. Super quick shipment and the ring looks phenomenal. If you’re hesitant about making this large and special purchase online…. Don’t be, this is a super easy experience.

The buying process is very simple with tons of options for both diamond and ring style. Found a combination that was perfect. She loves the ring and so do I.

The only warning I have if if you are importing to Canada (specifically Ontario) the import tax was almost 3 times what they quoted on purchase.

The ring and the reaction to it was worth every penny though.

One problem after another

I left a review on the James Allen Facebook and never heard back. Below is my post “ My Fiancé and I set up an appointment at the DC location so that he could be sized and pick out a ring style. The customer service was awful. The employees gave us very little attention and seemed to know very little about their products. Fiancé was sized and picked out a finish style. The rep wrote down all of the details for the ring customizations we discussed with her (pointed out the finish, she “sized” him) so that we could place the order later online. When we received the ring, it was much looser than what he tried on in store. Come to find out later from another customer service rep, the “comfort” style rings need to be sized down on. She seemed pretty frustrated by it and told me that she encounters this error often and that the staff should be well aware of this sizing consideration. The ring we received also arrived with a completely different finish. Apparently the ring style we liked was mislabeled and the staff member in the DC location didn’t realize this. I had taken a picture of the ring sitting behind the finish description (thankfully) and a rep later confirmed that it was indeed mislabeled and should’ve been picked up on by the DC staff. Luckily my fiancé ended up liking the finish we got, but we had to send the ring back for sizing of course. Service rep tells me it’ll take less than 10 days, probably 7. Also says she would send a confirmation email to me. Never got an email. I just now followed up 1 week after return delivery was confirmed.. only to find out that resizing actually takes 3-4 weeks.. and that I must’ve been communicating with a “misinformed staff member”. At this point, I gotta wonder how many misinformed or just careless people are working for this company? 🤣 Oh and of course we are getting married early September, just after this 3-4 week time frame. So let’s cross our fingers we even get the ring in time. After our experience, I genuinely cannot recommend this company. All of these problems were avoidable. Had the staff been well informed or just paying attention, I’m sure it would’ve gone a lot differently. Just don’t shop here.”

Now some time after that above post we received the resized ring and it had permanent black marks etched into it (I’m assuming from the resizing). Very obvious and it looked awful. We actually couldn’t believe that the ring was supposedly “inspected” by an employee as indicated on a note in the box. We sent it back and were told the jeweler “messed up” and needed to make a whole new ring. When we finally got the ring a few days before leaving to get married.. it also had black marks on it.. just smaller and less noticeable. At that point I was done and we just kept it because it was just too much hassle and we needed the ring to get married just days later. I’m tired of even thinking about this experience because it was exhausting and stressful. I’m really dissatisfied and wouldn’t buy anything from James Allen again.

Shipments delayed no ownership of the date promised…

Ordered an eternity ring online after confirming with a rep that it would be shipped to me by latest by certain date. Order showed the expected delivery date, however I still don’t have it even 2 days later. Called a representative last night and at first he said I already have it, it shipped 4 days ago. I said maybe you shipped it but I don’t have it. He didn’t offer any help of any kind and recommended I should call FedEx (which I did before without success). James Allen does not show any sign of ownership for the delivery dates although they are advertising “overnight delivery”. Don’t use them if you need your order by a certain date!! Shop a different store. Can’t say anything about the quality of the item because I didn’t receive it yet, even if I should still receive later (I start to doubt it after several delivery push outs) - it lost a big amount of the value. Very unhappy.
