How to Become a CNA in Arkansas

The Arkansas Nurse Aide Registry oversees active and inactive certified nursing assistants throughout the state via their online portal. To be listed in The CNA registry in Arkansas, you need to become a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of Arkansas by completing the following steps:

  • Attend and complete a state-approved CNA training program that entails a minimum of 90 hours (find free CNA classes in Arkansas).
  • Pass the CNA competency exam offered through Prometric Registry, which consists of a written or oral knowledge exam in English only and a clinical skills exam.

Nursing assistant certificates expire in 24 months from the date they’ve been issued. For an applicant to be eligible for certificate renewal, they require at least 8 hours of monetarily compensated nursing services to have been completed within the month time frame prior to the expiration date. A renewal fee no longer applies for the state of Arkansas.

To have a recently expired certificate reinstated, you need to submit a reinstatement application. However, the process of reinstating your nursing assistant license is different if you require reactivation for reasons other than a recently expired license, including:

  • Your license that has been expired for more than 24 months
  • Your license is void due to lack of continuous work as a CNA
  • Your license was suspended because of abuse or negligence complaints
  • You have previously submitted fraudulent application

The state of Arkansas recognizes the contributions of our military service members and their spouses and veterans. Military service members or veterans may have met some certification requirements as a result of their military service or other training, knowledge and experience. Military spouses of current, active duty military service members also may have met some certification requirements related to this status. Modifications to renewal requirements may also be available for some military service members on active duty.

To be eligible to renew a certified nursing aide certificate in Arkansas, you must have worked as a nursing assistant or performed nurse-related work for at least 8 consecutive hours in the preceding 24 months. Nursing students in the state of Arkansas do not have to pay to renew their CNA licensing certificate. If you have any employment restrictions due to patient abuse, neglect, theft or misappropriation, you cannot renew your Arkansas Certified Nurses Aide certificate (see Reference 1).

If your name has changed from what is listed on your CNA license, you will need to also submit legal documents (such as a marriage license) documenting the name change. (see Resource 1)

If you fail to renew your Arkansas CNA license within 24 months of its expiration, you will not be able to renew your license. You will then be required to take the CNA entrance exam again.
