Food Wars!: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Megumi

Food Wars! became a fan favorite because there were many captivating plot points, and most characters had intriguing backgrounds and development. Food Wars also had some of the best cooking battles in anime history. The hard-working students had to perform their best at Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute. Totsuki Saryo was a school where only the best of the best Chefs could stand a chance to graduate. While viewers followed Soma’s development over the years, they met several characters who brought up mixed feelings.

One of them was Megumi, who was the secondary lead in the series. She divided fans because, while there are Megufans, who adored her, some fans strongly disagreed on her importance in the show.

10 Megumi Didn't Have Proper Character Development

Many fans argued that Megumi's character barely improved or changed over the years. Most of the time, she was relying on others’ support, which often made fans upset. While she got a little bit more confident over the years, there weren't any big changes in her personality despite the constant help and support from others.

She had no special skills, yet, she became one of the Elite top That raised plenty of questions about the institution’s creditability. Furthermore, Megumi did not develop as a person, either. Food Wars fans were disappointed to see how transparent her character was, while others showed plenty of growth over the years.

9 Megumi Was Overwhelmingly Shy

Megumi’s character didn’t fit into the plot according to many fans. Her overly shy and awkward personality quickly turned her into a meaningless character in Food Wars. Her cooking style didn't really change and her cooking battles were often boring.

She was also bland in most fans' eyes, and viewers felt she was unnecessary to most plot development. Some fans even found her annoying and felt some scenes are worse because of her. One thing is for sure, other chefs were not shy at all, and it required confidence and boldness to achieve their goals.

8 Erina Took Megumi's Place

In Food Wars' third season, Erina stepped forward becoming the main deuteragonist and that seemed to make fans happy. Erina was generally more outspoken, and she also had an admirable special skill. Most fans were delighted to see her stepping up and becoming a more suitable romantic option for Soma.

Erina had her flaws, as well, and the fact that she comes from a noble family was unrelatable for many viewers. However, Erina's character was interesting and complex which made viewers wanting more of her. Despite all the negatives, a large number of fans agreed that Erina had a better character development than Megumi, which made Megumi even more meaningless in the series.

7 Megumi Was Overly Dependent On Others

In a very competitive environment, depending on others wouldn’t take an aspiring chef far. Megumi was dependent on others both personally and professionally, and her dependant nature made her a much less likable character. It became clear over the years that she could never finish her training without the constant support of others, but she managed to get a position among the Elite as well as finish her training.

Another problem with Megumi was that she rarely offered help to others even though she always needed her schoolmates’ support.

6 Her Hidden Potential

Most of the characters in Food Wars had a special skill and came up with one of a kind recipes, and fans often wondered when Megumi's hidden skills would manifest. Unfortunately, no one got to see what she was capable of, and, at some point, everyone lost interest in her often mentioned but never surfaced 'Hidden Potential.'

Despite all the praising she received in the anime, viewers never got to see Megumi show off her true potential. Eventually, fans were more focused on more interesting and talented characters.

5 Megumi Worried Too Much

In an anime where only the Elite can succeed, it was a little disappointing to see a lead character worry that much. Megumi was anxious about every little thing, and fans couldn’t relate to her inner struggles.

It's natural to worry to some extent; there was a lot of pressure on her. Yet, after a few years, Food Wars fans expected her to toughen up a bit more. Because of her regularly haggard face, viewers were hoping to see less of her in every episode.

4 Her Character Became Boring

Many Food Wars Fans found Megumi boring because over the five seasons she didn’t bring anything new to the table. It was easy to get bored with her character considering how exciting most other characters were in the show. Other characters improved, changed, and became better while Migumi stayed the same. A large number of online discussions prove that most fans found Megumi meaningless because she was boring and didn’t add anything particularly special to the show.

3 She Was Often Annoying

Devoted fans were often annoyed by Megumi’s appearance in scenes because her character was a little too much. As she was always worried and lost most of the time, people began to hate her. The fact that she ranked very high in the school did not help her case, either. Even those fans who didn't hate her thought that she had no place in Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute. Over time, viewers were expecting less screen time with Megumi and even hoped to enjoy the series without her.

2 Megumi Was Weak

An aspiring chef has to be strong to make it through the most prestigious school. In the Elite, everyone showed strength and motivation, but Megumi seemed to lack these qualities. It often felt like her peers simply pushed her through to the end because she would have failed right at the beginning.

RELATED: Food Wars: 5 Chefs Better Than Alice Nakiri (& 5 Less Talented Than Her)

Food Wars viewers were surprised to see her progressing through to the end because she definitely didn’t have what it takes to become a master chef.

1 She Wouldn't Have Made It Without Soma

Soma and Megumi were very close, and that was certainly beneficial to her. It often made fans furious, because Megumi alone wouldn’t have passed the first challenge. Their unbalanced relationship also made her character feel outdated.

Fans felt Soma was held back by her. Soma was a talented Chef who often paid more attention to Megumi than he should have, causing difficulties for himself. All in all, Megumi would likely have dropped out early on without Soma’s help. Fans also agree Soma would have enjoyed his years at the Institution much more without Megumi.

Megumi Tadokoro

Megumi Tadokoro

Member Favorites: 2, She is one of the main heroines who comes from a small port town in Japan. Megumi went to Tootsuki Culinary Academy to become a chef and make her family proud. Unfortunately, even with her neat skills in cooking, Megumi&#;s poor social skills and her extreme demophobia got the best of her and had to rely on someone who is close to her possibly due to her humble status and her ordinary beginnings in the academy. However, after witnessing Souma&#;s incredible cooking skills and creative method of cooking, Megumi would become his assistant, partner, and friend throughout the series.

Easily nervous and sensitive, Megumi is one of the clumsy and shy students who tries to do her best while continuing to become a chef. She easily panics whenever accidents (some are usually in a comedic fashion) happen or when other students almost finish their work. She is also a rather cautious student who uses her words carefully to avoid unwanted consequences. It is revealed later that Megumi actually fears the crowd, which the crowd made her nervous even until the extent of her lacking confidence, might be the reason for her to have barely survived passing in the academy, even with her good skills in cooking. With her demophobia, Megumi&#;s skills were remained hindered despite her knowledge of recipe and some cooking methods.

Despite her weakness, Megumi is an honest and innocent student who does not lie about anything. She has a strong determination and will try her best to reach her dream to become a chef after she is paired with Souma. She also values friendship and rather observant towards any cooking style available in order for her to learn the style fast (especially Souma&#;s).

Megumi&#;s style of cooking is mostly based on cutting the ingredients using neat style. With her neat style of cutting, most of her cuts are considered artistic as well as well prepared. Due to her fear of crowds, the true nature of her cooking is often hindered. Megumi&#;s careful cutting and wise use of every material made her an unexpected expert, even if it took more time for her to specify the chemistry of the ingredients for the dish. Also, despite her lack of confidence and also her fear of crowds, Megumi&#;s strong observation made her create a dish to even supposed rivaled to Souma and other professional should she stay optimistic. With her being an assistant chef beside Souma since her seemly last class at Chapple class, Megumi seemingly adopted Souma&#;s creativity through her observation from Souma&#;s cooking.

Personality

Megumi is a clumsy, timid, thoughtful, kind, and honest girl who always speaks in a polite tone. She is a nurturing sort of person, always looking out for others and willing to assist them in any way that she can. According to Gin Dōjima, Megumi's greatest gift is her warm hospitality as she cooks for the eater to make them feel good. Her kindness, through her cooking, moved even the initially cold Kojirō Shinomiya into nostalgic childhood-fueled tears. Her main aspiration in life is to return to, and eventually run, her mother's ryokan. Because she highly idolized her mother and the work setting she was in, this eventually created her "hospitality" mentality. Megumi's mother taught her to think of someone special to her whenever she cooks and Megumi firmly believes that by doing so, she can create delicious dishes.

Although Megumi is a capable chef, she does not fare well under pressure because she has stage fright. Because she is intimidated very easily, she makes simple mistakes when she cooks, causing many of her classmates to see her as a weak student. She is quick to panic when something goes awry and tends to over think situations when under pressure or stress, such as repeatedly packing and unpacking a suitcase to make sure she packed something, even though she did not need to pack a suitcase in the first place. She was also rather cautious, preferring to choose her words and actions carefully to avoid unwanted consequences and attention. She has a habit of tracing the kanji for "person" ("人") on her hand then motioning, as if to eat it, whenever she is stressed.

user uploaded image

Initially, she heavily relied on Sōma's creativity to pull them both through tough assignments both in the academy and at the Training Camp. After her first Shokugeki, Megumi's confidence grew tenfold. Although she still retains her tendencies to panic and overreact, she has more confidence and thus, her cooking skills have been put on full display in front of her previously skeptical classmates who were used to her failures. Unbeknownst to her, she managed to even impress Senzaemon Nakiri who was the only person to truly understand the true untapped potential that Megumi possesses after eating her ramen. Overall, Megumi still feels that she has more room to grow and finally knows what its like to have fun while cooking, eager to face new challenges in the future.

user uploaded image

Even before Sōma showed up, Megumi had a serious side, but this generally only appeared whenever she played ping pong. She displays an unusual level of seriousness and concentration whenever she is in her "Hopping Hare" mode, though any sort of surprising news can easily snap her out of this persona. Even when not playing ping pong, her "Hopping Hare" state has appeared on occasion, though usually for brief moments.

History

Megumi grew up in a small port town in the Tōhoku region. In her childhood, Megumi idolized her mother and worked in the kitchen with her, hoping to be as skilled as her. Her mother was the owner and head chef of the Shōkeien Ryokan. Unfortunately, many of the staff grew old and were unable to prepare the inn's signature goosefish dish. To save the inn from falling apart, Megumi took it upon herself to learn the skill from the local fishermen. Though she had a bit of difficulty in the beginning, Megumi eventually learned the skill, allowing the inn to cook their signature dish again. Her mother was impressed of her skill at her age and recommended that she attend Tōtsuki Culinary Academy. Though Megumi wanted to stay and continue to help the inn, her mother persuaded her to go and improve her skills even further.

user uploaded image

As she prepared to depart from her hometown, Megumi was sent off from the train station by her mother, the ryokan staff, and the fishermen she worked with over the years. One of the people there gave Megumi an Omamori, a Japanese good luck charm, as a memento from her to take to Tōtsuki. Megumi held this charm whenever she is stressed or needs an extra boost of confidence. With her family and friends' high expectations and support, Megumi bid farewell to them as she departed to begin a new chapter of her life.

user uploaded image

Unfortunately, Megumi's life in the Tōtsuki Culinary Academy did not start off as she had hoped. It took three months for her to finally pass Fumio Daimidō's entrance exam into Polar Star Dormitory. While she tried to apply, Megumi temporarily lived in the dormitory's barn until she was granted a room. Her actual school performance was even worse, as she constantly failed most of her cooking assignments because her stage fright greatly hindered her true cooking skills. This eventually caused many of her lecturers and fellow classmates to label her an expendable failure and the class dunce. Though Megumi would often call her parents, she could not bring it upon herself to tell them of her failures. Whenever Ryōko Sakaki or Yūki Yoshino offered to practice cooking with her, she declined because she would cry as she did. Somehow, Megumi had performed well enough to scrape into the high school level of Tōtsuki at the bottom of her class. However, the school board sent her a letter, warning her that her next unsatisfactory grade would result in her immediate expulsion.

Then she sat down in a chair, placing them under her and revealing a candid view of the place where the legs joined. It was noticeable that the moisture had not yet dried out and a dark spot stood out against the background of light tights, but.

This did not bother her.
