St. Petersburg’s American Stage returns to live performances — outdoors
When St. Petersburg theater company American Stage was forced to close a year ago due to the pandemic, programming changed to a digital platform. The first half of their season, aptly named Reimagine, brought streamed recordings of performances to viewer’s homes.
Now, the company has announced a return to in-person, live performances, held outdoors with social distancing and mask requirements.
In May, Pop Up! Performances will happen around St. Petersburg, including The Factory St. Pete.
In the summer, Romeo & Juliet (The One with The Happy Ending) will be presented at Williams Park. It reimagines Shakespeare’s tragedy but keeps all the fun stuff — party crashing, clandestine encounters and plot twists. Viewers 20 and younger get free admission.
In a news release, CEO and producing artistic director Stephanie Gularte said the American Stage team is “ready and very excited to begin to carefully return to onsite performances.” She said by implementing safety measures and creative approaches to content and staging, the goal is to “begin to restore the joy of joining together for live performance experiences.”
From March April 4, a pre-recorded performance of Natalie Symons’ comedy The People Downstairs can be streamed, but is only available for American Stage members. It was filmed during a preview performance in front of an audience.
Adult classes will resume in the spring, outdoors and virtually. Summer theatre camp returns and a one-day improv workshop happens in August. The company will announce its season in the summer, as well as name its new producing artistic director.
American Stage in the Park, which includes the Gala Under the Stars fundraiser, will be postponed until spring Those are the largest events the company produces.

An Endearing Comedy About Love, Loss & Healing
September 15 October 3,
Summary:
A World Premiere three years in the making.
After an extended pause from the COVID pandemic, THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS by St Pete playwright Natalie Symons, who developed this play at American Stage, finally gets its world premiere.
21st Century Voices: New Play Festival – Mainstage Selection
In Buffalo, NY, aging funeral home custodian Miles lives with his middle-aged daughter Mabel, who spends her days writing letters to prison inmates. When a court-appointed guardian threatens to take away their home, Miles sets out to set Mabel up with Todd, an inept mortician. It is a father’s fierce determination not to accept his daughter’s fate that ignites an endearing human comedy about love, loss, loneliness and the healing power of laughter.
“We are over the moon to be bringing back this tremendous show and giving it the true World Premiere that it deserves,” said Associate Artistic Director Kristin Clippard. “The set of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS has stood like a ghost in our theater for 16 months, and the lights will finally shine on this delightful story. It’s the perfect comedy, centering on an isolated father and daughter, to warm your heart and make you laugh out loud – With other people!”

The Odd Couple
For the Love of A Classic
October 27 November 21,
Summary:
The brilliant Neil Simon once said, “Never underestimate the stimulation of eccentricity.”
Oscar is a slob. Felix is neat. Oscar loves his bachelorhood, and Felix is newly divorced. When the two decide to live together in the same apartment, how will they reconcile their differences?
This Neil Simon comedy explores the relationship between two men who, despite their many differences, must find a way to live together. Hailed as one of the greatest comedies of all time, “The Odd Couple” won the Tony Award for Best Play. The New York Times said, “There is scarcely a moment that is not hilarious.” Since its premiere, the play has received two Broadway revivals, been adapted to a movie, inspired two sitcoms and has been staged by theatres around the world. Now, American Stage brings to life a contemporary fresh interpretation of this beloved American classic with a modern, multicultural cast.

Having regained consciousness with amazement, I held my hand a little higher, and it covered a bush of hair, velvety to the touch and slightly damp.
