New Mexico death certificates are restricted access records. State law restricts access to death certificates to the deceased registrant's (also called decedent) immediate family members or those who represent tangible proof of legal interest in the requested record.

Immediate Family means any of the following: mother, father, sibling, child, current spouse, or maternal or paternal grandparent. Paternal grandparent is eligible if father is listed on the vital record.

Death certificates become public records fifty (50) years after the date of death.

We only issue certificates for individuals whom have died the state of New Mexico. Please see the Vital Records Reference by State to find out where to obtain death certificates for other states. To request a New Mexico death certificate, please continue reading below.

Request Online or by Phone

Request by Mail

When requesting a death certificate via the mail, you can either fill out the form and mail it in, or send a letter with specific information.

NOTE:A photocopy of your government issued photo ID is required with this application.

Fill Out Form

Print out the Death Record Search Application form and fill out all required fields. We also have a Spanish Version of the form.

Write a Letter

Instead of filling out the form, you can alternately write a letter with the following information.

• The decedent’s name.
• Date of death.
• City of death. Include county if known.
• The decedent's Social Security Number, if known.
• The name of the mortuary in charge of final arrangements.
• Requestor's relationship to the person on the death certificate.
• The purpose for which you are requesting the death certificate.
• Your name and signature.
• Your mailing address.

New Mexico Death Records Search

In New Mexico, the Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics of the New Mexico Department of Health is responsible for maintaining and issuing the records of all deaths that occur in the state of New Mexico. The New Mexico Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics maintains New Mexico Death Records of 1920-present. New Mexico Death Certificates are not publicly available. Only the immediate family members of the deceased or people with a tangible interest in the record are allowed to request for and obtain certified death records in New Mexico. That being said, NM death records can be viewed, not obtained, by the general public as they are public record.

Who Can Request Certified New Mexico Death Records

• A parent of the deceased
• Siblings of the deceased
• Adult children of the deceased
• Adult grandchildren of the deceased
• The deceased?s maternal or paternal grandparents

Provided you?re eligible for it, you can obtain New Mexico Death Records in a number of ways including in person, by mail and online. Following is how you can obtain death records in New Mexico via each method.

Certified New Mexico Death Records

The first way of requesting for and obtaining death records in New Mexico is in person. To make an in person request for death records in New Mexico, visit a local New Mexico Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics office, complete the search application, present a copy of a valid photo ID, and pay the nominal fee.

New Mexico Death Records By Mail

The second way for you to request for and obtain death records in New Mexico is by mail. In order to make a mail request for the death record you need, complete and mail a Death Record Search Application along with a copy of a valid photo ID and a self-addressed envelope to:

In addition to the above, you need to mail a pay order or check for the fee. If you don?t want to fill out the form, you can make a request for the death record you need by writing a letter to the Vital Records division of the New Mexico Department of Health. Following is the information your letter should contain:

• The name of the deceased
• The date of death
• The city of death including county
• The social security number of the deceased (if known)
• Your relationship to the deceased
• Your name and signature
• The purpose of making the request
• Your mailing address

New Mexico Death Records Online

The final way to request for and obtain death records in New Mexico is online. The New Mexico Department of Health provides death records online through Vitalcheck, the authorized expediting service. To make an online request for the death record you need, go to the website of Vitalcheck and follow the instructions mentioned there.

Another way to request for and obtain New Mexico Death Records is online through public databases. To find out more, contact the New Mexico Division of Vital Records by calling them at 505-827-0121.

Certificate Information

New Mexico's Department of Health runs the Vital Records and Health Services department which handles most of the states records and statistics for births and deaths. Birth and death records are available from 1919 to present. Prior to 1919 there was no central source for health related records by state or county government so records are difficult to find.

Birth records become public records 100 years after the date of birth while death records become public records 50 years after the date of death. Each certified copy costs $10 dollars for birth records and $5 dollars for death certificates, payable to "New Mexico Vital Records". Expedited service it not available by mail and the state department does not take credit cards.

The state vital records department does not handle any marriage or divorce records. All records must be obtained from the County Clerk in the county where the license or decree was issued.

Adoption Records

New Mexico adoption records become sealed after the completion of all adoption proceedings. The state does have a program called the Confidential Intermediary Search Program where sealed records can be opened by a state appointed intermediary.

Property and parcel records are handled by various departments within the county government in which the parcel resides. Depending on the county either the county assessor, treasurer, or clerk may maintain the online search tools to look up tax records, property history, land use or ownership.

Death & Birth Records

The Genealogy Center has copies of many death certificates for New Mexicans between about 1907 and 1950 and these are available to the public. The years vary by counties. These death certificates are available on a local area network at the Genealogy Center and on microfilm. Volunteers from the Albuquerque Genealogical Society, the New Mexico Genealogical Society, and throughout the United States recently completed a project to index these certificates.

New Mexico Vital Records and Health Statistics was created in 1919.  Prior to this time, birth and death records were collected by a variety of institutions, including counties and churches. Both birth and death certificates for New Mexicans may be requested from the State Vital Records Office in Santa Fe in person, by mail, or online.  Birth certificates may also be requested in person at the Albuquerque office at 2400 Wellesley Dr NE.

The Genealogy Center has delayed birth records for New Mexicans on microfilm from about 1871 to 1895.
