  • Grinding summary per tier

Before you begin…

For those who haven’t even unlocked the fishing class: The Fisher’s Guild is in Limsa Lominsa.

To gain maximum EXP as a Fisher and level up fast, keep note of the following. Key points are: Choosing the right fish/spot/lure for you level. Also, Keeping key pieces of gear up to date (To up HQ chance, and reduce “got away”). Our Gathering Gear Guide is something you should keep open while leveling up: If you’re curious, here’s the equipment I prepared for my journey to 50.

Have a pile of Rabbit Pie (you can buy it from the Limsa food vendor in the market). If you can, pack some Jack-o-Lanterns, too.

Fishing Class Quest Items

For fishing, you might want to check the Market Board and buy up all the brainlessly cheap fish to make this a little bit less of a hassle. You can submit fish as quest requirements that are bought from NPC/Auction house!

Fishing Level 1-5

Fishing Quest Level 1: Lominsan Anchovy x 5
Fishing Quest Level 5: Harbor Herring x 3
Level 1 Fishing Levequests:
Limsa Adventurers Guild & Red Rooster Stead.
Level 5 Fishing Levequests: Limsa Adventurers Guild & Red Rooster Stead.

Where to find Lominsan Anchovy & Harbor Herring? These can be found right outside the guild. The bait you use should be Lugworm and Pillbug respectively. I suggest just grinding it out here until you reach level 5. You would have caught 5x Lominsan Anchovy and 3x Harbor Herring by then.

Level 1 Levequest Fish
(?) 3 Merlthor Goby : Limsa Lominsa lower decks | Lugworm
(?) 3 Malm Kelp: ^
(?) 3 Lominsan Anchovy: ^
(?) 3 Finger Shrimp: ^

These are really… REALLY not worth doing EXP wise. But given how lazy I was (and other people surely) to muck around in lower levels, you can use these to speed the process up immensely. If you have 100 leves lying around… go for it!

FSH Level ~1-5 Grinding spots
Just fish around the front of the guild :) (See advice above). If you’re lazy just buy up 5x Lominsan Anchovy, 3x Harbor Herring, all the cheap Merlthor Gobies and Malm Kelps you can and just submit stuff to the Levequest guy.

Fishing Level 5-10

Fishing Quest Level 10: HQ Princess Trout
Level 5 Fishing Levequests:
Limsa Adventurers Guild & Red Rooster Stead.
Level 10 Fishing Levequests:
Western La Noscea, Swiftperch.

Where to find Princess Trout? In virtually any river you find in Middle La Noscea (Use Crayfish Ball). Exact rivers it can be found in: Nym, Rogue, West Agelyss and The Mourning Widow)

Level 5 Levequest Fish
(?) 3[9] Sea Cucumber [R] :
(?) 3 [9] Harbor Herring [R] :
(?) 3 Ocean Cloud :
(?) 3 Coral Butterfly :

I didn’t really bother looking for a good spot to fish these up since the grinding spot mentioned below far exceeds hunting for levequest fish in this tier. I feel that in this tier either you go out and grind it, or buy a pile of these fish off the MB and spam the levequests. Fishing these up just for submission straight up loses to the grinding option.

FSH Level ~5-10 Grinding spots

This may seem out of the way, but fishing in Murmur Rills (NSH) using Crayfish Ball is the absolute best and fastest spot to reach level 10!

Fishing Level 10-15

Fishing Quest Level 15: Navigators Dagger  x5
Level 10 Fishing Levequests:
 Western La Noscea, Swiftperch.
Level 15 Fishing Levequests:
Lower La Noscea, Moraby Drydocks.

Where to find Navigators Dagger? Use Rat Tails in Brewers Beacon, Western La Noscea. Fairly easy catch, no problems here.

FSH Level 10 Levequest fish
(?) 3 [9] Harbor Herring [R] : Swiftperch, WLN | Goby Ball
(?) 3 [9] Pebble Crab [R] : ^
(?) 3 Moraby Flounder : ^
(?) 3 Tiger Cod : ^

Swiftperch using Goby Ball has a small chance to get you ALL of the fish you need! Save the Rothlyt Oysters and White Corals – they’re used for the next tiers leves.

FSH Level ~10-15 Grinding spots

Thankfully, Swiftperch is the best choice for both leve-fishing AND grinding. Continuously fishing and submitting make this tier extremely fast to get through. No reason not to just sit your butt in Swiftperch and grind.

Fishing Level 15-20

Fishing Quest Level 20: Warmwater Trout  x5
Level 15 Fishing Levequests: Western La Noscea ,Aleport.
Level 20 Fishing Levequests: South Shroud, Quarrymill.

Where to find Warmwater TroutUsing Crow Fly in Oakwood (Upper La Noscea), Warmwater Trout is easy to come by.

FSH Level 15-20 Levequest fish
(?) 3 [9] White Coral [R]: Difficult to isolate | Skull Valley | Rat Tail
(?) 3 [9] Helmet Crab [R]: Difficult to isolate | Skull Valley | Rat Tail
(?)  3 Rothlyt Oyster : Silver Bazaar (WTH) | Rat Tail
(?) 3 Razor Clam : Crescent Cove (WTH) | Rat Tail

White Coral is an eyesore. It’s low level, and hard to isolate! Overall, using Rat Tails in Aleport will get you a small chance to catch any of these.

FSH Level ~15-20 Grinding spots

Fallgourd Float using Midge Basket is actually pretty good. None of these fish are really valuable nor are Leve submits for this tier, but EXP gains are quick here! This spot is pretty amazing. Make sure to grind out a level or two here. I suggest trying to Catch Warmwater Trout for your class quest once you hit 20, when you can use lures (Crow Fly). That’s also where you’ll be grinding so just wait :)

Fishing Level 20-25

Fishing Quest Level 25: Shadow Catfish
Level 20/25 Fishing Levequests: South Shroud, Quarrymill.

At level 22 you learn Release. With this skill you can release a fish you catch – telling the game to not store any of this fish during this fishing session. It’s separate for HQ/NQ.

Where to find Shadow CatfishUsing low level bait Moth Pupa, you can mooch a Striped Goby(HQ) to get your Shadow Catfish rather easily! You cannot pre-emptively finish your L25 Class Quest since you need to mooch – which is a skill you gain at 25.

FSH Level 20-25 Levequest fish
(?) 3 [9] Faerie Bass [R] :
(?) 3 [9] Dark Sleeper [R] :
(?) 3 Copperfish :
(?) 3 Black Eel :

FSH Level ~20-25 Grinding spots

Yugram River using Butterworm in E.Thanalan is an awesome spot if you have decent gear. It gives the eels (night time), Dark Bass and Yug’ram Salmon for the next tier!
Oakwood
using Crow Fly and Brass Spoon Lure. This spot is really attractive if you’re lazy to move from spot to spot.

Fishing Level 25-30

Fishing Quest Level 30: Fullmoon Sardine x 10
Level 25 Fishing Levequests: East Shroud, Quarrymill.
Level 30 Fishing Levequests: Eastern La Noscea, Costa Del Sol.

Where to find Fullmoon Sardine? Take the boat from Aleport to Umbral Isles. Use Spoonworm and fish in the northern part of the island. (Only spawns at night time, 6pm to 6am)

FSH Level 25-30 Levequest fish
(?) 3 [9] Dark Bass [R] :
(?) 3 [9] Five-Ilm Pleco [R] :
(?) 3 Black Ghost :
(?) 3 Yugr’am Salmon :

Sadly, this tier suffers the same fate of not having a “universal” fishing spot. There are GREAT grinding spots for this tier so I would ignore leves here all-together.

FSH Level ~25-30 Grinding spots

@23 head right to The Burning Wall. @27 head to ceruleum field with Chocobo Fly lure! That’s going to be the ultimate grinding spot for a WHILE.

Fishing Level 30-35

Fishing Quest Level 35: Desert Catfish
Level 30 Fishing Levequests: Eastern La Noscea, Costa Del Sol.
Level 35 Fishing Levequests: Coerthas, Observatorium.

Where to find Desert Catfish? Southern Thanalan, either of the 2 sandfishing spots using Sand Leech. Easy to catch, no worries here.

FSH Level 30-35 Levequest fish
(?) 3 [9] Black Soles [R] :
(?) 3 [9] Sea Pickle [R] :
(?) 3 Indigo Herring :
(?) 3 Ash Tuna :

Again, Levequest fishing in this tier is a no-go. Good grinding spots and a lack of a non-universal levequest fish source dooms this tier.

FSH Level ~30-35 Grinding spots

CERULEUM FIELD IS THE KING of grinding spots! 100% Grip Killfish! It’s superior to the much discussed MOONDRIP that many other fishers will tell you. Trust me! @30, you can replace your Chocoby Fly with Sylphid Basket lure for FASTER Grip Killfish netting.

Things To Note

Getting Started

  • Try to get your Fisher class to it’s level cap (level 80 at the moment) before challenging the Fishing Log. This is for the simple fact that you’ll be able to take advantage of better gear and newer skills.
  • Certain fish only bite at specific times or during certain weather conditions.  At times, you may have to look up when you’ll be able to find them.
  • Bait that is only available from scrip vendors are usually always priced high on the marketboard. Be sure to have a lot of Gil on hand or be ready to farm Gatherers’ Scrips.

  Time & Weather

  • A window is a period of time where applicable conditions are met, allowing a fish to bite. This is affected by in-game time (Eorzean Time) and in-game weather. If the time window is not up or the weather conditions are not met, you will not be able to catch said fish.
  • Weather conditions lasts for 8 Eorzean hours.
  • An Eorzean hour is approximately 3 minutes in real life time.

  Fishing Stats & Bait

  • The Gathering Rate affects your success in reeling in a fish. Perception increases the odds that a fish will be HQ. In some cases, if a fish is large, you will never have a perfect chance of catching it.
  • Certain fish have a minimum Gathering value. If you don’t meet this minimum value, your catch rate will be 0%.
  • Lures are reusable and can be used to catch fish repeatedly. But, they can get lost.
  • There are two kinds of bait for fishing: consumable and reusable. Reusable bait can be used again after catching a fish (as long as you always hook it) and consumable bait cannot be reused.

  Time Limits

  • The game will give you a 50 minute time limit at any fishing hole. After that, it will give you a message that reads “The fish sense something amiss”. You won’t be able to fish at the same spot until you reset the limit. To reset it, just cast your line at another location (you don’t have to catch anything) and return.

FFXIV Fishing Leveling Guide

Now that we’ve noted those things, let’s move on to the FFXIV Fishing Leveling Guide!

If you haven’t joined the Fisherman’s Guild yet, you can go speak to N’nmulika at the Fisherman’s Guild in the Limsa Lower Decks (X7, Y14).

Lvl. 1-9 Advice

Personally, I believe in saving Leve Quests for higher levels since they are more beneficial that way. But if you can’t stand being a low level or you’re trying to grind it out to level 10, go for it!

Grind

Your next Fishing Quest won’t unlock until level 10. If you want to grind, the Nym River (Middle La Noscea X17, Y14) with Moth Pupa and Crayfish Balls is a good spot to rack up some XP. Another good spot is Summerford (Middle La Noscea X14, Y15) with Pill Bug or Goby Ball.

Lvl. 10-19 Advice

Swiftperch (Western La Noscea X34, Y32) is a nice location for this tier for Leve’s and grinding between level 10 and 16. Just bring some Pill Bugs and Rat Tails.  Fallgourd Float (North Shroud X21, Y24) is a solid place to gain fast XP as well between level 11 and 18. Bring some Bloodworms and Midge Baskets and you can catch anything in the hole!

Murmur Rills (North Shroud X26, Y25) is a great way to level up between level 15 and 20.

Your next Fisher Quest won’t unlock until level 20, so try to hang out in some of these spots until then. Leve Quests are good options as well (preferably Lvl.15 Leve Quests since they give you double the XP of a level 10).

Make sure if you’re grinding to catch fish near your Fisherman’s level. For example, if you’re a level 12 Fisherman, try to catch fish near level 15. It will give you significantly more XP than a level 5 fish.

Level 10-19

  • Issuing NPC: Sisipu •Location: Fisherman’s Guild (Limsa Lower Decks X7, Y14).

The *Single* Leve’s also provide 1 Venture as a reward option.

Lvl. 20-29 Advice

Leve Fish

Head on down to the Yugram River (Eastern Thanalan X25, Y22). For Black Eels (Leve), use Butterworm between 5 PM & 9:59 AM (Eorzean time). For Yugr’am Salmon (Leve), use Honey Worm or Stem Borer’s. Black Ghosts can be found at Goblinblood (South Shroud X27, Y21). You can catch these by mooching from an HQ Ala Mhigan Fighting Fish.

Grind

Oakwood is also a popular fishing spot. I suggest using Crow Fly lures here for the 20’s fish. Try not to spend too much time here after level 25. At level 22, you’ll learn a skill called “Release“. This skill allows you to release a fish you caught without storing it in the current fishing session.

Between level 25 & 28, consider spending some time at Burnt Lizard Creek (Southern Thanalan X21, Y15) or The Silver Bazaar (Hammerlea – Western Thanalan X15, Y29). They’re not great spots, but 25-28 doesn’t have many great spots.

Once you reach level 28-30, Ceruleum Field (Bluefog – Northern Thanalan) will be the go to spot for a little while for grinding. Make sure you bring some Chocobo Fly Lures or Syrphid Baskets.

Besides that, your next Fishing Quest won’t be until level 30. So, spend some time in these spots and get all the XP!

Level 20-29

Main Fisher Quests

  • Lvl. 20: A Fish In Hot Water
  • Issuing NPC: Sisipu •Location: Fisherman’s Guild (Limsa Lower Decks X7, Y14).
  • Objective: Deliver 5 Warmwater Trout to Chuchuroon.
  • To Catch: If you use Crow Fly lures in the Oakwood area (Upper La Noscea X13, Y24), you should have no problem finding them.
Rewards
  • 28,420 XP
  • 470 Gil
  • Initiate’s Fishing Rod & 15 Floating Minnow’s
  • Lvl. 25: A Game of Cat & Fish
  • Issuing NPC: Sisipu •Location: Fisherman’s Guild (Limsa Lower Decks X7, Y14).
  • Objective: Deliver 1 Shadow Catfish to Sisipu.
  • To Catch: To find Shadow Catfish, it will be slightly trickier. Head to Fallgourd Float (North Shroud X21, Y24). The best strategy is to use Moth Pupa bait to catch an HQ Striped Goby. Mooch the Striped Goby and you should be able to find a Shadow Catfish fairly easily.

*Mooch is a skill you get at level 25. It allows you to bait smaller or HQ fish to lure in larger fish (like the Shadow Catfish mentioned above).

Lvl. 30-39 Advice

For level 30, The Juggernaut (Eastern La Noscea X17, Y32) isn’t a bad spot to grind for a little while. Spend some time at Moondrip (Western Thanalan X17, Y6) too. It’s a great spot for the earlier 30’s.

Ceruleum Field (Bluefog – Northern Thanalan X16, Y20) is the go-to in this tier for grinding until about level 35. Surprisingly, there’s loads of Grip Killifish here. Hang out here and you’ll rack up the XP.

Your next Fishing Quest won’t be until level 40, so once you reach level 35, head to the Sagoili Desert (Southern Thanalan X12, Y35) with some Sandleech. Once you’re close to level 40, pay a visit to The Nail (Whitebrim – Coerthas Central Highlands X16, Y21) with some Wildfowl Fly.

The Leve Quests in this tier are scattered, but at an average of 500,000 XP a piece, I think they’re worth giving a shot at least once if you’re having trouble.

Lvl. 40-49 Advice

The Nail (Coerthas Central Highlands X16, Y21) will get you Northern Pike and Bronze Lake Trout for your *Single* Leve Quests. Bring some Stem Borer’s.

Around level 40, go to The Burning Wall (Eastern Thanalan X29, Y24). This is a pretty decent grind spot until level 43-44.

Around level 42-45, Cereleum Field (Bluefog – Northern Thanalan X16, Y20) (yes, again) really shines. With Glowworm, you will find Ignus Snails, Sludgeskippers, Boltfish and Ilsabardian Bass here for your Leve Quests and rack up some XP in the process. If you’re having trouble getting your catch, use Topwater Frogs on Ilsabardian Bass and Spinnerbait on Sludgeskippers.

Once you reach level 45, go spend some time at The Sea Of Clouds (Whitebrim – Coetheras Central Highlands X13, Y14) with lots of Hoverworm. This is a great grinding spot for this tier.

This tier is a bit of a struggle, so I would definitely recommend at least one triple Leve Quest. Your next Fisher Quest will unlock at level 50.

Lvl. 50-59 Advice

Regular Vs. (L) Leve Quests

Please, please, do regular Triple or Single Leve Quests, not L Leve’s. I’ll break it down.

One regular Leve Quest costs 1 allowance and one (L) Leve costs 10 allowances. For example, let’s say you do the Level 56 Triple “Pipira Pirouette”, which costs 1 allowance. You turn in 3 quantities of Pipira Pira fish (9 total). You’ll receive 4,467,054 XP in total (not HQ). Now if you did the Level 56 Triple “Plus One Or Two Or Three” (L) Leve, you’d get 11,912,142 XP total for 6 submissions (not HQ). Sounds good, right? No.

You just spent 10 allowances on 1 Leve when you could have spent 3 (repeating the regular Leve 2 more times) on the regular Triple Leve Quest and actually ended up with 1,489,020 more XP. Watch out for those (L) Leve Quests. They’re flashy, but no matter how you add it up, they’re not in your best interest.

Collectibles

This tier starts the Fishing Collectibles. If you don’t have this unlocked, go speak to Morgayne at the Foundation (X10.1, Y10.4). The quest is called “Inscrutable Tastes”. Once you unlock it, you can find Collectible Appraiser’s in:

  • Limsa: Aetheryte – Hawker’s Alley
  • Ul’dah: Aetheryte – Sapphire Avenue Exchange
  • New Gridania: Aetheryte – Leatherworker’s Guild
  • Idyllshire – X5.7, Y7
  • Rhalgr’s Reach – X9.8, Y12.5

Check here every so often. Each item will tell you the level of the item, the XP you’ll receive, the Scrips you’ll receive and the minimum collect-ability you need for each item to be turned in. Most importantly, it will tell you what is currently in rotation and how much time remains (in the bottom right corner) before rotations change. Collectibles almost always rotate at 4 PM EST every day.

To farm for Collectibles, make sure you have Collector’s Glove activated before you click on the item inside the node. Use Patience (or Patience II once you get it) to force HQ. Once you’re ready to collect it, use the Collect action.

I would love to give you a chart of collectibles to farm and give you insane XP, but collectibles rotate

Just keep in mind they are great to farm and will give you great XP in the process, especially if you’re out of Leve allowances.

Grind

Around level 50-51, Greytail Falls (Riversmeet – Coerthas Central Highlands X35, Y26) is a great grinding spot. Balloon Bugs and Red Balloons work great on these fish.

For level 53-58, Voor Sian Siran (The Sea Of Clouds X29, Y35) is another great spot. Stonefly Nymphs work on pretty much any fish there.

For level 54-57, The Blue Window (The Sea Of Clouds X7, Y11 Floating Islands) is a good place to spend time. You could even push it to 60 if you don’t want to move too much. Bring some Giant Crane Fly & Red Balloons.

One more spot would be the Delta Quadrant (Azys Lla X10, Y31). It’s great at level 58-60. Bring some Purse Web Spider and Goblin Jigs.

Level 60-69 Advice

Starting out in this tier, be sure you at least have a level-appropriate rod. You’re given a new one for pretty much every Fisher Quest in this tier, so once you reach the marks (level 63, 65 and 68) stop what you’re doing and go grab those rods. It’ll help out.

If you want to do Leve Quests between level 64-68, I wouldn’t blame you at all. The grinding is rough in that area.

Grind

Level 60-62 is the best time to use your Commercial Survival Manuals you acquired in the earlier levels. Once you get to level 70, instead of getting a 150% XP bonus like 60-69, it is halved to 75%.

From 60-62, go spend some time in The One River Southern Riverbeds (Yanxia X21.5, Y36.6, Z-1.0) Spearfishing. You’ll rack up the XP faster than doing level 60-63 collectibles (most of the time).

At level 63, you’ll get a skill called “Veteran Trade”. This skill allows you not to catch the previous fish you caught. *This only works for Spearfishing*, but it will help you narrow down the options to get the fish you want. If you’re feeling up to it, go back to Yanxia and try it again.

Some people don’t like Spearfishing, but it reaps the most XP for a while. If you don’t want to Spearfish, the only decent spot before level 68 is The One River East – Yanxia (X20, Y24) with Nightcrawlers.

Once you reach level 68, head over to The Isle Of Zekki (Ruby Sea X8.3, Y26.6). If it’s in rotation, you can find the collectible Daio Squid there, which will give you Yellow Scrips. These will come in handy later. And of course you can rack up some serious XP here.

Your next Fisher Quest unlocks at level 70, so get on it!

Level 70-80 Advice

Crystarium Deliveries

Let’s start here. The level 70 quest Well Eel Be Damned (Requires The Crystalline Mean quest listed below) unlocks Crystarium Deliveries.

These deliveries are a newer type of Custom Delivery. Each delivery requires 6 turn ins of between 1-3 items. The items you turn in can be NQ, HQ or a mix of both. These deliveries give you Scrips, XP and Gil for whatever DOL or DOH you turn them in under. *These cannot be repeated*

You get 12 Custom Deliveries a week (between all DOL & DOH). But, it will give you great XP, so defnitely try it out.

Courtesy of Gamer Escape, here are the turn-ins for Fisher below.

FFXIV Fishing Leveling Guide
Gear & Weapons

Between level 70-71, look into the Landking Scrip Gear. If you have some Scrips to spare, this is the best option you will have. Since you’ll need serious upgrades in the near future, there’s no point in spending all your money on gear right now.

Unless you’re extremely into collectibles, try to save your big upgrades until level 80 if you can.

Collectibles

Unless you have exceptional gear, try to stick with level 70-74 collectibles (Albino Caiman, Weedy Seadragon, Golden Lobster and Little Bismarck). 75-80’s are almost impossible unless you have superior gear.

Grind

Crystarium Deliveries are a great option to get you fairly fast and large amounts of XP.

Leve Quests in this tier are decent. I always like doing Triple’s, but there is one I would not do: The Source Of The Problem. Purple Ghosts literally ARE the problem. They don’t give you great XP for the work and even if you use Veteran Trade, it’s still incredibly hard to find the fish.

For level 70-73, go to Southeast Source – Lakeland (X14, Y39). Little Bismarck (Collectible – Truth Of Oceans & 10x Noblefish) can be found here, along with some other decent Swimming Shadows fish.

Using Patience II > Cordial in this tier will greatly increase your chance to get collectibles.

For level 72-74, go visit The Eastern Kholusian Coast – Kholusia (X35, Y36) with some Short Bill Minnows and Squid Strip. You’ll find level quest fish here, the collecible Weedy Seadragon and some good XP.

For level 74-76, you can go to Seagazer Shoals – Kholusia (X17, Y36). There’s not too many choices of fish here, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If you’re feeling up to it, re-visit the Southeast Source – Lakeland (X12, Y38) and you will find the collectible Bothriolepis (Shadow node).

At level 75, I highly suggest doing the Facet Quest (found in Main Quests above) “Fishing For Confidence”. Using Patience II > Cordial will catch the Calico Trout rather easily and earn you a fast 8.2 million XP.

Level 76-78, the South Longmirror Lake – lI Meg (X29, Y36) is a good place to rack up the XP.

Between level 78-80, Where The Dry Return – The Tempest (X37, Y7) with Short Bill Minnow is a good spot to hang out for a bit. North Lake Tusi Mek’ta – The Rak’tika Greatwood (X5, Y26) is a solid place, even for level 76-77 (most fish here are level 80). Not only will Gourmand Crab rack up some XP (Use Veteran Trade on Ronkan Pleco & you’ll get almost nothing but Gourmand Crab), but you have some decent Swimming Shadows fish to catch here.

Good luck on your final tier!

How to master the Final Fantasy XIV Ocean Fishing minigame

Final Fantasy XIV is chock-full of interesting little mini-games designed to whisk us away from the status quo of constant battle and complicated raids, but they often become quickly outdated and borderline irrelevant in a matter of weeks.

Ocean Fishing is the outlier here. It might not be as popular as the day it launched, when everyone rushed for its unique mount rewards, but it’s still by far the most efficient way to quickly level grind to level 80 fishing. Even without an objective in mind, it’s a timeless Hydaelyn pastime that offers a welcome reprieve from the hustle and bustle of daily life in Square Enix’s premium MMORPG. Here’s how to make the most of it.

What is Ocean Fishing?

FFXIV Ocean Fishing

Ocean Fishing isn’t the same as diving below the waves to ram a spear through big shrimp and sharks. That was so last expansion. Instead, it’s a short voyage on a purpose-built boat where 24 players work together to reel in all kinds of rare fish.

If you haven’t warmed to fishing just yet, that’s no problem. The feature can be unlocked and explored as soon as you pick up the class at the Fishing Guild in Limsa Lominsa (more on that here). You’ll have the odds stacked against you when it comes to its lucrative rewards at these lower levels, but Ocean Fishing doubles as a great way to power level, too.

You can’t just jump off the boat and hop back on for another ride, though. Unlike battle classes in Palace of the Dead, Ocean Fishing adheres to a strict schedule. The boat sets off every two hours for a round-trip, so you’ll have to level the conventional way between each if you’re looking for the quickest route to level 80 Fisher.

FFXIV Ocean Fishing rewards

Depending on your level, the rewards for Ocean Fishing can differ. Before reaching the level 80 cap, the main allure of Ocean Fishing is the ludicrous amounts of experience points it awards not only with each catch, but when the points are tallied up at the end.

For those already a master of their craft, Ocean Fishing dishes out scrips — the end-game currency of the three gathering classes. How many points you manage to score ultimately relates to how many Yellow Scrips you earn at the end, but small amounts of White Scrips can be had by catching rarer fish.

Beyond that, most players in the early days of the activity will be aiming for two specific rewards: The Hybodus mount and the Major General minion, more on those down below.

But no matter your reason for going, every fish caught through Ocean Fishing can be framed and displayed in your in-game house. Bigger fish need bigger frames, and these can be bought with the yellow scrips earned during each run by chatting to the vendor on the dock.

Ocean Fishing routes — FFXIV Ocean Fishing guide

FFXIV Ocean Fishing locations

The Voyager takes pre-determined routes through the ocean when it leaves the Limsa Lominsa docks. These routes are made up of three of the four available spots chosen at random, meaning there is a total of 15 different possible routes. The ship spends around five minutes in each zone, with each housing different fish.

You can check with the NPCs by the boat to see which route it will take before hopping. This is important, as you’ll need to use specific baits in each location to achieve the top score needed for the minigame’s best rewards. You can buy the majority of bait on the boat itself, so you don’t need to worry about running out.

  • The Southern Strait of Merlthor
  • The Northern Strait of Merlthor
  • Galadion Bay
  • Rhotano Sea

Strategy and bait — FFXIV Ocean Fishing guide

FFXIV Fishing tugs

Amassing a high score in Ocean Fishing is down to both strategy and luck. Using the right bait at the right time makes a massive difference to your score, but luck will ultimately play a part in the final tally.

Rather than catching fish at random, it’s best to aim for each zone’s “Spectral” fish to trigger a “Spectral Current” — an instance-wide window which drastically reduces catch times and causes incredibly rare fish to become very common. During these windows, it’s easy to rack up high point counts with the right attitude. By targeting a specific combination of other fish in each zone, you can also activate a personal Fisher’s Intuition buff, which basically eases the difficulty of catching elusive five-star fish.

The fish (and bait) needed to trigger these windows differs with each zone, so familiarize yourself with the locations and prepare to switch baits as and when required.

Understanding tugs

Whether you’re a veteran fisher or not, the Ocean Fishing patch introduced a new way to gauge the fish you’re about to catch. Before now, it was possible to differentiate between the three strengths of fish tugs through sound, animation, and the rumble of a controller if using one. Now, exclamation marks will pop up above your head when something bites, with one, two, or three exclamation marks dictating the strength of the tug.

Knowing the strength of a tug a fish gives out is one step to knowing what you’re about to reel in, so we’ll note these when referring to a Spectral Fish in the guide. We’re not saying to ignore a bite if it’s not what you’re after, but it’ll go a long way to achieving a high score if you know to use something like Double Hook on a specific strength pull.

Preparation

Before you dive into Ocean Fishing, you’ll need to stock up on bait. Luckily, there aren’t too many fish in the sea, so you won’t need to grab the dozens of different baits available around Eorzea and beyond. You’ll be given Versatile Lure when you unlock the minigame. These can be used by new fishers to grab quite a few of the fish available, but you’ll need the bait below to reliably catch the Spectral fish needed to trigger a Spectral Current:

Players looking to min/max and catch five-star fish with or without the Fisher’s Intuition buff will want to grab the following bait as well:

  • Shrimp Cage Feeder
  • Heavy Steel Jig
  • Glowworm
  • Rat Tail

While you shouldn’t worry too much about this at lower levels, high-level players can, and should, bring a stack of Hi-Cordial with them to every Ocean Fishing run. Skills like Mooch II, Identical Cast, and Double Hook are vital when trying to reach the higher score counts needed for something like the Hybodus mount. Likewise, any food that might tip you over a GP threshold can help you get out another Double Hook during a time-limited window like a Spectral Current.

The following items may just make the difference to a high-level player and should be brought along:

  • Hi-Cordials
  • Peppered Popotoes (or any available GP food)

Lower level players will want to bring the following to make the most of the potential experience point gains:

  • Cordials
  • Any food (for the 3% experience boost)
  • Company-Issue Survival Manuals (from Grand Companies)
  • Any experience boosting equipment (Brand-New Ring or various pre-order bonuses)

Once you’ve cleared a page or so of inventory space, you should be good to go. Join up with a few friends and queue up, or just hop in the queue alone and see who you end up with. The more the merrier when it comes to triggering the buffs needed for high scores, but it’s entirely possible to top the charts without a full squad on board, too.

Ocean Fishing Guide — Which fish to catch for Spectral Currents and points

FFXIV Ocean Fishing guide spectral currents

Once the boat leaves the dock, you’ll be taken to your first destination. If you’re aiming for a high score, helping to trigger a Spectral Current should be your primary objective.

There’s a slim chance of triggering a Spectral Current when anyone reels in a Spectral fish. A Spectral Current can be triggered once per zone per run and applies to the whole boat when triggered. The fact that anyone can trigger it means you should be ready to switch baits at any time. This way you can quickly make the most of a Spectral Current when/if it activates.

Then there’s the Fisher’s Intuition buff. This buff is triggered by catching specific fish exclusive to each zone. Once active, it awards a window to more easily catch five-star fish, making them great for eager point hunters. There’s mention of these elusive fish spitting out Grade-VIII material when desynthesized, so there are a few reasons why veterans might turn their attention here.

The Fisher’s Intuition buff lasts for one minute outside of a Spectral Current and 15 seconds during one, presumably, to stop you reeling in 40,000 five-star fish should the stars align. The bulleted list below will mention which fish trigger the buff, how to reel them in, and which five-star fish you can catch during them.

We’ve broken each zone down to its core fish and bait so you can make an at-a-glance decision on what you need to fish up and where. There are plenty more fish in each zone, and these change in and out of Spectral Currents, but the fish below are what you typically want to aim for. Catches in-between are mostly filler.

The Southern Straight of Merlthor

  • Spectral Current = Spectral Discus (Bait: Krill – Catch: !!!)
    • Fisher’s Intuition = Hi-aetherlouse (Ragworm) > Mooch/Mooch II > Great Grandmarlin (x2)
      • During Spectral Current ONLY = Coral Manta (Bait: Shrimp Cage Feeder)
  • Fisher’s Intuition = 1x Ghoul Barracuda + 1x Gladius
    • Ghoul Barracuda (Ragworm) > Mooch/Mooch II > Gladius
      • During Fisher’s Intuition = Little Leviathan (Plump Worm)

The Northern Strait of Merlthor

  • Spectral Current = Spectral Sea Bo (Bait: Ragworm – Catch: !!!)
    • Fisher’s Intuition = Gugrusaurus (Plump Worm) > Identical Cast > Gugrusaurus (Double Hook)
      • During Spectral Current ONLY = Elasmosaurus (Heavy Steel Jig)
  • Fisher’s Intuition = 1x Elder Dinichthys
    • Tossed Dagger (Ragworm) > Mooch/Mooch II > Elder Dinichthys
      • During Fisher’s Intuition = Shooting Star (Ragworm)

Galadion Bay

  • Spectral Current = Spectral Megalodon (Plump Worm – !!!)
    • Fisher’s Intuition = Heavenskey (Ragworm) > Identical Cast > Heavenskey THEN Navigator’s Print (Krill)
      • During Spectral Current ONLY = Sothis (Glowworm)
  • Fisher’s Intuition = 3x Galadion Chovy
    • Gladion Chovy (Krill) > Identical Cast > Galadion Chovy (Double Hook)
      • During Fisher’s Intuition = Drunkfish (Krill)

Rhotano Sea

  • Spectral Current = Spectral Bass (Plump Worm – !!!)
    • Fisher’s Intuition = Silencer (Plump Worm) & Deep-Sea Eel (Plump Worm)
      • During Spectral Current ONLY = Stonescale (Rat Tail)
  • Fisher’s Intuition = Crimson Monkfish 2x
    • Crimson Monkfish (Plump Worm) > Identical Cast > Crimson Monkfish
      • During Fisher’s Intuition = Sabaton (Krill)

FFXIV Ocean Fishing point multipliers and missions

FFXIV ocean fishing multipliers

It’s not something you’ll hear groups talk much about, but point multipliers are awarded at the end of an Ocean Fishing run based on a bunch of different criteria.

You’ll largely rely on these multipliers to hit point thresholds needed for the minion and mount rewards, but they tend to come naturally. These bonuses apply once per run but can boost your score by 10, 20, 30, or even 50%.

We wouldn’t suggest aiming specifically for them, but getting super lucky in a run could see your end result catapult if your team manages to strike it rich.

Ocean fishing point multiplier bonuses are as follows:

  • 10% bonus
    • Score 2,500 points or higher
    • Catch at least 15 fish during a Spectral Current
    • Catch a four-star fish
    • As a party, catch at least 10 different kinds of fish in the current location
    • Be the one to trigger a Spectral Current
    • As a party, catch 100 seahorses
  • 20% bonus
    • Score 5,000 points or higher
    • Catch a five-star fish
    • As a party, catch at least 150 octopuses
    • As a party, catch at least 150 jellyfish
    • Catch at least 35 fish during spectral currents
  • 30% bonus
    • As a party, catch at least 200 sharks
  • 50% bonus
    • As a party, catch at least three five-star fish

Do I need to be level 80 for Ocean Fishing?

No, you don’t! Ocean Fishing can be unlocked as soon as you first pick up a rod. The Versatile Lure you’re given after completing the quest and unlocking the minigame can be used at any level, too, putting you mostly on par with any other fisher out there.

Versatile Lures can catch just about any fish featured in the minigame, but these fish do have what we call preferred bait — that is, bait that’s more likely to reel them in. The Versatile Lure will get you started for sure and is great for helping you quickly level up during Ocean Fishing, but it’s still recommended to grab the baits listed earlier in this guide

How to get the Hybodus shark mount — FFXIV Ocean Fishing guide

FFXIV Hybodus mount

The new FFXIV Hybodus mount comes from the Ocean Fishing feature — or, more specifically, an achievement earned in the minigame. Getting the Hybodus mount requires you to score 10,000 or more points in a single run. After that, it’s a case of talking to the achievement guy by Apkallu Falls in Old Gridania.

Getting 10,000 points is many parts strategy and a few parts luck. RNG can make or break a run, but you won’t know the extent of it until the very end when group bonuses are tallied up and dished out as score multipliers.

Boosting your odds means going into Ocean Fishing with a specific strategy in mind. Spectral Currents — activated randomly when someone catches a Spectral Fish — drastically reduces catch rates and fish rarity, making it the perfect time for the group to fish up large quantities of elusive fish, boosting their points in the process. For that reason alone, it’s worth referring to the guide up above.

You can help increase the odds of a Spectral Current activating in the zone by focusing on catching Spectral Fish. Once it’s active, most players should then focus on catching anything and everything, while burning GP on Double Hook uses during Medium (!!) and Large (!!!) tugs to hopefully catch numerous high-yield fish in one go. A Spectral Current can activate once in each of the three zones you’ll travel through, so you’ll want to trigger two or three of these to have the best odds.

How to get the Major General shark minion — FFXIV Ocean Fishing guide

FFXIV ocean fishing minion

Like the Hybodus mount, the FFXIV Major General minion is awarded through an achievement in the Ocean Fishing mini-game. Getting the Major General minion requires scoring 5,000 points in a single run — which shouldn’t be too difficult for the majority of players. After that, it’s a case of talking to the achievement guy by Apkallu Falls in Old Gridania.

The trick to scoring 5,000 points in Ocean Fishing is to make the most of Spectral Currents — special windows that reduce catch times and fish rarity to help boost scores. These have a chance of activating whenever anyone on the boat catches a Spectral fish, so you’ll want to refer to the guide above to pitch in with the effort.

Once active, it’s a matter of catching as many fish as you possibly can, while potentially saving the use of Double Hook for Medium (!!) and Large (!!!) tugs in the hopes of catching multiple high-yield fish in one go. With the right strategy, you should be able to hit 5,000 points with just the one Spectral Current, so don’t worry if your group is having difficulty triggering multiple.

Does Gathering/Perception affect Ocean Fishing?

It’s a bit too early to tell just yet, but the general consensus is that Gathering/Perception stats don’t have a huge effect on Ocean Fishing results. Because the minigame features a shared goal that players of all levels can join and work towards, it doesn’t make much sense to require fancy gear and expensive material completely out of many participants’ reach.

Several features in the game could significantly grow your overall performance. Higher GP amounts and essential skills like Double Hook and Patience add a noticeable difference to your gameplay. That said, your skill level doesn’t decide the results of the game. The higher-level players with the desirable gear and skills won’t always overcome newer players when fishing. Ensure that you select the correct bait, and you could easily win.

When to use Double Hook or Patience — FFXIV Ocean Fishing Guide

FFXIV ocean fishing guide

You can influence your catches with the Patience Precision/Powerful Hookset. Our team has found that this skill and toolset aren’t essential if you’re looking to score enough points for the mount or minion. Instead of solely relying on luck and depleting your GP, try to save and build up that GP for Double Hook employment.

Players can capture up to four rare fish, with one single cast, during Ocean Fishing— simply use the double hook to maximize your number of catches with a single line. The trick is to wait for Special Currents; That is when you’ll have the opportunity to collect the greatest amount of rare fish. Save your GPs to use Double Hook on Medium and Large tugs during Special Currents. To be fair, you don’t have to wait for a Special Current to use the Double Hook tool on larger-sized tugs. You can use it whenever you want. We specifically recommend waiting to use it, though, until you’re confident you have enough time to regenerate GP before the next major play.
