What&#;s Next For Dragon Ball Z Games?

By Anthony Puleo

Dragon Ball Z games are in a state of uncertainty after Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's release, and fans want to know what to expect next.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has been out for quite some time now, and given the slow rate at which it is releasing DLC, players are ready for something new. In terms of Dragon Ball Z games, it isn't very clear what will come next. At the moment, three series dominate the world of Dragon Ball games, those being XenoverseFighterZ, and as of this year, Kakarot. It seems there are a number of potential options for the next DBZ game, but the real question is which of these choices is most likely to happen, and which would fans like to see more.

The current era of Dragon Ball Zgames began in with the release of Dragon Ball Xenoverse. This was a title that took a very different approach to the standard Dragon Ball game formula, a change that fans appreciated at the time. The Xenoverse saga continued to expand in when Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 released, but has since subsisted off add-on content. Two years later, Dragon Ball FighterZ came out, taking fans back to the traditional 2D fighting style of DBZ game but in a much more polished and stylistic way. Finally, marked Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's release, a truly story focused game.

Dragon Ball Z Game Sequels

The obvious place to start when guessing at what comes next for Dragon Ball Z games is a sequel. Of the three series currently running the show, Xenoverse is definitely next in line for a sequel. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is simply too new at this point and still hasn't even ran the course of its season pass. The only way a sequel could be made would be to focus on Dragon Ball Super content, and that's already been added in the form of DLC. Likewise, Dragon Ball FighterZ is still releasing new characters and growing.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 on the other hand is long overdue, and Xenoverse 2 can only tide fans over for so long. There are a lot of improvements to the game that could be made in a sequel, and fan support for this would likely be overwhelming. Given that it has been four years since the release of a Xenoverse title, it wouldn't be surprising to see the game on next gen consoles. Of course, the fact that Xenoverse 2 will be released on PS5 is slightly concerning, but doesn't rule out a sequel in the future.

New Dragon Ball Z Games

Though a sequel to any of the aforementioned games would be welcomed by fans, the best thing for Bandai Namco to do would be to release a new game altogether. Dragon Ball FighterZ represents one of the cleanest and most polished combat system of DBZ games, while Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is by far the most in depth look at the show's story. Finally, Xenoverse 2 provides players with way more customization in terms of character appearance and moves. Combining all of these things into one could create an amazing Dragon Ball game.

It may also be best not to make a Dragon Ball Z game, but to make a Dragon Ball Super game instead. Despite the Dragon Ball Super anime concluding in , its content is still always retained for DLC purposes. Many fans desperately want a standalone Dragon Ball Super game, and with the introduction of the multiverse there are nearly endless potential stories to tell. A Dragon Ball Super game could take Kakarot's approach, telling Goku and Vegeta's story precisely, or it could follow in the footsteps of Xenoverse, perhaps allowing the player to create a character as the member of the Galactic Patrol. At this point the possibilities truly seem endless.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

When Is Dragon Ball Z&#;s Next Video Game Releasing?

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was the latest DBZ game, after FighterZ. Although they've been getting DLC, fans are likely already anticipating the next game.

Prior to the release of Dragon Ball XenoverseDBZ games had fallen short of fan expectations, with disappointing titles like Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi and Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z. But following Xenoverse, DBZ games took off once again, giving fans Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dragon Ball: FighterZ, and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. These three games are still supported and have dedicated player bases. However, fans of the series are likely already seeking the next Dragon Ball Z game.

Unfortunately, nothing new has been confirmed at the time of writing. As far as current game updates go, Xenoverse 2 received new DLC in March and has another DLC coming in December. FighterZ received the SSJ4 Gogeta DLC in March and will be getting another update in August, which could also bring a fourth season pass. In June, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot received Warrior of Hope - likely its last DLC. While new content is great for keeping players interested, many fans will always be looking out for the next big entry in the series, especially in regards to how it will incorporate the best parts of the current games.

With how strong FighterZ has been going (since , no less), a sequel seems unlikely anytime soon. Many are hoping for a Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 with even more customization and unique alternate storylines, or a Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot 2, which would likely follow the events of Dragon Ball Super.

Where The DBZ Video Games Could Go Next

However, since , the Dragon Ball Z video game community has especially been hoping to get a sequel or remaster of one title: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is still a fan favorite and one of the titles most anticipated to make a return, next to ’s Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3. While the Xenoverse series is praised for its customizability, FighterZ is praised for its combat, and DBZ: Kakarot is praised for its open world and story, none of them have single-handedly captured the full essence of the older titles.

One major downside to new Dragon Ball Z games is their lack of base-game characters. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 had total characters, ranging from the original Dragon Ball all the way up to Dragon Ball GT, with no DLC. No Dragon Ball game has come close since. Xenoverse 2 now has over characters, but most of them were added with paid DLC. While Budokai Tenkaichi 3 had more characters, Budokai 3 had a combat system many fans loved. FighterZ has captured that aspect well, though its startingroster was lackluster, with only 24 playable characters compared to Budokai 3's 42.

Seeing so many fan-favorite Dragon Ball characters locked behind a paywall, especially after the massive rosters of the older games, is quite a letdown. Hopefully, fans will hear good news about a new Dragon Ball Z game in alongside the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, as it seems the current games will last until at least the end of
