How Much Does a Maintenance Supervisor Make?

By Aurelio Locsin

Maintenance supervisors can perform their subordinates' jobs during absences.

Maintenance workers are responsible for the repair and upkeep of interiors, exteriors and grounds of public and private facilities. Their supervisors ensure that all tasks are scheduled as needed, assigned to appropriate staff, and completed on-time and within budget. The salaries of supervisors depend on the type of maintenance they handle.

Training

General maintenance workers need no formal educational background because they are trained on the job. Installers and repairers might need training in their specialties from apprenticeships, vocational schools or informal shadowing of experienced workers. Most maintenance supervisors have some kind of vocational training as well as some formal postsecondary education. They also typically have one or more years of experience on the job so they have first-hand knowledge of what their subordinates face.

Housekeeping and Janitorial

Housekeeping and janitorial supervisors are in charge of cleaning staff at hotels, hospitals, offices and large residences. They establish and implement standards, inspect work to ensure that it meets specifications, and assist with cleaning as needed. They check and maintain cleaning equipment and order supplies when they run low. As with all supervisors, they hire, train and fire subordinate staff. Supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers made a mean $18.16 per hour or $37,760 per year as of May 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Landscaping

Landscaping supervisors manage the work of grounds maintenance staff and are sometimes called grounds supervisors, landscape managers or grounds foreman. Except in areas with mild climates, they do most of their work from spring to fall. They coordinate the planting and maintenance of foliage through mulching, fertilizing, mowing and pruning. They also train workers on more complex tasks such as pruning trees or using equipment. As of May 2011, supervisors of landscaping, lawn service and groundskeeping workers earned a mean $21.71 per hour or $45,160 per year, according to the BLS.

Maintenance and Repair

Supervisors of mechanics, installers and repairers handle the activities of trades people who ensure that equipment such as air conditioning systems, electrical power lines and commercial machines work properly. They monitor inventories of tools and parts and order them when needed. They also keep records of all repairs and maintenance, so they can be scheduled at regular intervals. According to the BLS's May 2011 data, supervisors of mechanics, installers and repairers averaged $29.90 per hour or $62,190 per year.
