Chromebooks get integrated Chromecast support, no browser needed

Chromecast support is becoming a native function for Chromebooks and Chromeboxes, making it easier to stream a desktop or web page.

Googler François Beaufort introduced the new feature on his Google+ page, noting that you can 'cast your Chrome OS screen without opening up the browser:

"Simply open the status tray with <Atl>+<Shift>+S, click on "Cast devices available" and pick a Chromecast. You'll be prompted to share either your screen or a window."

The ability to choose a local Chromecast is limited to the Developer channel of Chrome OS for now, so if you're running the Beta or (more likely) the Stable version, you won't see this option until it progresses though the various channels after testing.

Google updates the Developer channel on a fairly regular basis while the Beta and Stable channels typically see new releases every two to six weeks respectively.

Although this feature is becoming integrated in Chrome OS, you'll still need the free Google Cast Extension installed; that's the underlying mechanism Chrome OS uses to send web pages or a desktop to a Chromecast device. It also puts a Chromecast button on the browser, which you won't need thanks to the integration Google is adding.

Using Netflix with Chromecast

How to Cast Netflix from Chromebook to ChromecastUsing Netflix on your TV with Chromecast is a very popular thing many Chromebook users will do. Chromebook users can stream Netflix content directly from the website using the power of HTML5 — including on ARM-based devices like the HP Chromebook 11 or the new Acer Chromebook To make getting to Netflix easier there’s also an official Netflix app in the Chrome Web Store. Now, don’t get excited: it is just a glorified bookmark. But it is handy as you can get at it from the App Launcher or pin it to the App Shelf in Chrome OS.

If you don’t have (or want) to use the mobile applications but still want to cast, you can do so through the Netflix website in Chrome via the official Cast extension when your Chromecast is turned on and connected to the same network. Now, when you hit play to stream a video you’ll see a ‘cast’ button next to the fullscreen button. Tap this and the content will be flung over to your TV.

Launch the Netflix app on your Android device, Apple mobile device, or visit the Netflix website in your Chrome browser. Once you&#;re signed in, select the Cast icon in the upper right or lower right side of the screen. Select your Chromecast device from the list to launch the Netflix app on your TV.

  1. Turn on your TV.
  2. Plug in your Chromecast.
  3. Using the Input or Source button on your TV remote, change the input on your TV until you see the Chromecast home screen.
  4. If you haven&#;t yet, sign in to your Chromebook.
  5. Install the Google Cast extensionCast icon to cast videos, pictures, and more .
  6. In the window that appears, choose your Chromecast. The name you choose should match the name on your TV screen.
  7. Click Set up.
  8. Follow the instructions that appear.

To connect another Chromecast to your Chromebook:

  1. Click the Cast extension in your browser Cast icon to cast videos, pictures, and more
  2. Click Options > Add Chromecast.

If you are having trouble, try rebooting your Wi-Fi router by unplugging and plugging the power source. Make sure that Chromecast and your devices are connected to the same network. Check that the network name displayed on the TV after the Chromecast boots up is the same as the currently-selected network in the computer&#;s available Wi-Fi list.

  • Make sure the Chromecast&#;s name does not contain any special characters.
Special characters in the Chromecast name (like Emoji or apostrophes) will prevent it from being seen by the Netflix app.
Launch the Chromecast app on the casting device, select the Chromecast name, and remove any special characters.
After changing the name of your Chromecast, restart the Netflix app and look for the Cast icon when playing a movie or TV show.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of iOS or Android installed on your mobile device.
Netflix on Chromecast is compatible with iOS + iPhones, iPads, and iPods and with WiFi-enabled Android + smartphones and tablets.
  • Make sure the Netflix app is up to date.
You can check for updates in the App Store or in Google Play.
Android devices must be running Netflix app version or higher.
Apple mobile devices must be running Netflix app version or higher.

It’s never been easier to connect with your friends during your favorite TV shows or movies. With Chromecast, you can text and tweet while watching your favorite scenes without interrupting what’s casting on your TV. Chromecast’s multitasking capabilities allow you to continue using your laptop, tablet, or mobile device while casting videos or casting a Chrome browser tab. Once you begin casting, your device is available to open other apps, check emails and social media, create YouTube playlists, and even text. Plus, you’ll still have the ability to use your device as a remote, allowing you to stop, pause, rewind, and fast forward.

How to Use Your Chromebook With Chromecast

The beauty of a Chromebook is that Google Chrome OS has built-in support for Chromecast devices, meaning you don’t need a browser or an extension to cast your Chromebook's screen. Here's how to use Chromecast with your Chromebook.

This guide is based on Chrome OS version (bit).

Before You Start

To get started, have Chromecast installed and streaming your content. Then, make sure your Chromecast is updated to the latest firmware. Your Chromebook should also be updated to the latest version of Chrome OS.

Having a Chromecast already connected to your TV also means you don’t need to physically connect your Chromebook to view media. Without a Chromecast, you’re forced to drape an HDMI cable from your Chromebook to your TV. You may even need a USB-C adapter, depending on the Chromebook model.

Some manufacturers also make TVs with an integrated Chromecast component. These smart TVs are manufactured by Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Vizio, and many more, and they don't require an external Chromecast device.

How to Cast Your Chromebook Screen

Built-in Cast support in Chrome OS means you can simply click a button and your desktop casts to a Chromecast. This is probably the easiest, shortest way to get media onto your TV.

  1. Click the shelf's system clock located in the bottom right corner.

  2. A pop-up menu appears. Click Cast.

  3. Choose your Chromecast device. In this example, it’s connected to the TV Room TV already established in Google Home.

  4. In the following pop-up window, click your desktop screen, then click Share.

How to Stop Casting Your Chromebook Screen

When you're done, you'll need to manually stop casting from the Chromebook. Just click the system clock on your Chromebook again, then click Stop from the casting card that opens at the top of the menu.

Cast From Google Chrome and Mirror Chromecast to TV

Technically you don’t need this method if you’re casting from the desktop. Still, if you’d rather not share the entire screen, casting from within Google Chrome works too.

  1. Open Google Chrome and load the media you want to cast.

  2. Click the three-dot icon located in the top right corner.

  3. Click Cast in the drop-down menu.

  4. Choose your Chromecast device listed on the following menu. In this example, Chromebook casting to the TV Room TV already established in Google Home.

The Cast icon temporarily appears on the Chrome toolbar while casting. If you want to keep this icon on the toolbar, right-click it, then click Always Show Icon.

  5. To stop casting, click the blue Cast icon displayed on the Google Chrome toolbar, then click your Chromecast device listed on the drop-down menu.

How to Cast From Apps Using Chromebook and Chromecast

Again, if you don’t want to share your entire desktop screen, the next approach is to cast from within a specific service. You don’t need to start media playback before casting from the app, just click the Cast icon to get started.

How to Cast From Netflix

In Netflix, you’ll need to load the media's home page first before casting. For instance, if you load the landing page for The Witcher, you'll see the Cast icon located in the bottom right corner.

The Cast icon also appears in the top right corner when you click media during playback.
