Bathroom included: Ford Nugget Plus camper van outshines VW's pop-top

As beloved as it is, the VW California camper van often draws one major criticism: no bathroom. Ford already offers a bathroom option for its Transit-Custom-based Nugget camper van lineup, but the top-heavy high roof of that long-wheelbase Nugget Plus isn't for everyone and certainly doesn't look as cool at camp as an illuminated pop-top against a star-strewn black backdrop. With help from its partner Westfalia, Ford has fixed that with the new Nugget Plus pop-up camper van, which adds pop-top style and on-road handling to a neatly split multi-room camper that comes complete with indoor toilet room.

Westfalia introduced the 210-in (534-cm) Ford Transit-Custom-based Nugget Plus as a larger, bathroom-included alternative to the 196-in (497-cm) standard Nugget in early 2018, debuting it exclusively with a bulging 9.1-foot (2.8-m) sleeper high roof. High-roof vans certainly have some advantages of their own – solid-walled insulation in cold weather and more peace of mind in big, clawed predator country come to mind – but the camping world does love itself a pop-top camper van and its combination of maneuverable, parking deck-friendly driving and spacious, breezy campground living. Lower roof heights also make pop-top vans more practical everyday drivers.

Westfalia

It's no big surprise, then, that Westfalia has added a pop-up roof model to the Ford Transit Custom Nugget Plus lineup, bringing together its best Nugget features in a single model. Those features start off with a precisely packaged long-wheelbase "Plus" interior that Westfalia thinks of as a two-room concept: a spacious living area in the front/center of the van, split off from the more utilitarian center/rear of the van by an L-shaped kitchen counter.

We actually think Westfalia is underselling its layout, especially with the new pop-up roof, which could be thought of as a third room. When separated by the pull-out divider, the rear bathroom compartment becomes a fourth room – or, we suppose, a half-bath to round out a 3.5-room total.

Ford Europe

However you count the rooms, the floor plan splits areas much more cleanly than many other small camper vans. Instead of sitting and relaxing next to the kitchen block, Nugget Plus occupants leave the kitchen behind for a dedicated dining lounge with a removable table splitting the three-seat rear bench from the swivel driver area seats. The kitchen takes on a more rear-central position, offering plenty of space and capability with its L-shaped countertop, stove and sink.

The bathroom compartment in back is no luxurious mini-spa, but it gets the most important work done with a built-in toilet. For added convenience, Westfalia adds a fold-away sink across from the toilet so that bathroom users can wash up without having to step across the kitchen. The sinks are plumbed to a 42-L fresh water tank.

Ford Europe

As on the standard-wheelbase Nugget pop-top van, the new pop-up roof on the Nugget Plus tilts forward rather than backward, like the VW California or Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo. The roof creates a peak van ceiling height of 7.9 feet (2.4 m) and includes a double bed accessed via a ladder in the kitchen. The three-seat bench below converts into a second double bed, allowing the Nugget Plus to sleep four.

The Nugget Plus comes standard with a FordPass Connect modem for high-speed connectivity and Wi-Fi access for up to 10 devices. Ford's 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel engine comes in 128- and 182-hp tunes, paired with a six-speed manual or available six-speed SelectShift transmission. Along with its other advantages, the 6.9-foot (2.1-m) closed pop-up roof will offer an estimated seven percent boost in fuel efficiency over the high roof.

The pop-up Nugget Plus will start at €56,669 (approx. US$66,950), according to Westfalia, and will be available for reservations at Ford dealerships in select European markets in November. Deliveries will begin in Q1 2021.

Ford Europe

Ford's newest Nugget series has been increasingly popular since launching in Europe in 2019, and Ford expects 2020 sales to hit high levels. Thanks to the addition of the pop-up roof model, the Nugget Plus will get to prove itself in an expanding market, launching in the UK for the first time (the high-roof Plus is not offered there). Ford Britain did not provide UK pricing with its announcement.

Westfalia will be attending this year's Düsseldorf Caravan Salon starting next week. We expect it will show the pop-top Nugget Plus alongside the Ford Big Nugget, Mercedes-Benz James Cook and a VW T6.1 pop-top camper van that does have a bathroom ... the Club Joker City.

Camper van conversion company Benchmark Vehicles' flagship vehicle is the Junior, an off-grid, four seasons-capable camper built inside of a 2019 Ford Transit High Roof for $175,000.

Benchmark Vehicles specializes in converting both Ford Transits and Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, which are two popular camper van chassis that both have similar initial upfront costs. According to Benchmark Vans, the Sprinter excels in its quality and design, while the Transit has more horsepower and can be more easily serviced.

The Ford can also be powered by standard petrol which, according to Benchmark Vehicles, has a high appeal to customers who plan on taking their campers around Central and South America.

And for those who want to take advantage of this potential cross-continent capability, Benchmark Vehicles' Junior may be a good fit.

Junior was designed to be able to provide a comfortable #VanLife experience while off-grid in both hot and cold weather, according to its makers. To do this, Benchmark Vehicles upgraded Junior's power systems to include components like a new 415-amp hour lithium battery system that both charges quickly and "decharges" slowly, according to its maker.

The off-grid capabilities are also allowed with Junior's 2,000-watt inverter, secondary alternator, and 245-watt solar panels.

Europeans love camper vans and caravans (trailers, to us Americans). And Ford of Europe is once again appealing to a lifestyle that has retained popularity over multiple decades and multiple generations. Ford unveiled the 2019 Transit Custom Nugget camper van with an upgraded look, new features, and a fully livable interior to be sold directly through select dealers.

Developed with famed German brand Westfalia, Ford has two sizes of adventure in the Nugget and Nugget Plus. The Nugget is offered with either a pop-up or a fixed roof, while the Plus comes standard with the larger fixed roof. The Nugget Plus is 14.4 inches longer than the Nugget, which allows for a slightly more convenient living space by including a built-in toilet in the rear, a folding washbasin area, and a larger closet. Both models have enough space to sleep up to four people, two on a double bed that folds out in the roof area, and two on a second bed that can be constructed in the main living space.

The rest of the interior features a design that would impress tiny house specialists. In addition to the sleeping quarters, the main cabin has room for a kitchenette, as well as a convertible living and dining area. The kitchen offers a double-burner gas stove, a chrome-nickel steel sink, a 10.6-gallon fridge, and plenty of storage. Two 11-gallon tanks supply fresh and waste water and can work double duty for an outdoor shower. The cabin relies on an auxiliary heating system for warmth, and the floors are faux wood for easy cleaning.

When it's time to eat or simply enjoy each other's company (no phones while camping!), the fold-out table is designed to seat up to five people. Three can sit on a forward-facing bench, while the two front seats can swivel 180 degrees to face toward the rear. The Nuggets also offer a fold-out table with two chairs and an awning if it's a nice day to eat outside.

Nugget buyers will have the choice of one engine with two specs, a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel engine with either 128 or 168 horsepower. That's paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.

According to Ford, new motorhome sales in Europe surpassed 100,000 units for the first time and have shown strong grown in recent years. Responding to the demand, the Nugget will first be available in Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Ford has not released pricing for the Nuggets, but interested European buyers can see the new camper vans at the Brussels Motor Show going on now.

North America has seen a sharp increase in camper vans over the past few years, but the U.S. is still, as the CEO of Airstream put it, about 15 years behind Europe in terms of RV design. We hear this all the time at Curbed, especially in our RV and camper community group on Facebook: Why does Europe have all of the cool campers?

The latest wish-we-had-it-here camper to cross our desk comes, ironically, from Michigan-based Ford Motor Company. Ford originally introduced a newly redesigned Transit Custom Nugget in early 2019, and the Nugget itself has more than three decades of happy customers. The new Nugget, however, was so successful in Germany the past few months that the camper was recently launched in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, and the U.K.

It’s easy to see why—the Westfalia-converted Nugget has a super functional interior that benefits from a unique L-shaped kitchen. Located in the rear, the kitchen features a dual-burner stove, sink, and refrigerator. A forward lounge area is able to seat five people around a removable dining table thanks to a three-person bench and two reversible captain’s chairs. And in both the pop-up roof or fixed high roof options, the Nugget sleeps four; two people in a double bed and two others in a compact folding bed in the cabin.

Other perks in the Nugget include a retractable awning, outdoor shower, and toilet, foldaway sink, and privacy screen in the rear. Recent updates have added a Ford Pass Connect modem and Wi-Fi hotspot, making the Nugget a good choice for remote workers looking to live life on the go.

In many ways, the Nugget (and its competitor, the popular Volkswagen California van) points to the trends that we’re seeing in the North American market: Campers are going small with an emphasis on big tech. We also wish that their were more pop-top campers available in the U.S. The best options currently are from Seattle-based Peace Vans and the (long wait-listed) Recon Campers.

Unfortunately, Ford shows great enthusiasm for launching the Nugget in Europe, but it currently has no plans to bring the camper van to the U.S. Cue the complaints, stat.

Ford has turned its Transit Custom into a camper van named Nugget with 2 beds and a bathroom — see inside

  • Ford has unveiled the long wheelbase version of its Nugget camper van.
  • The new larger van now includes a bathroom and an additional sink, along with the existing two beds, leisure seating area, and kitchen space found in its original iteration.
  • The Ford Transit Custom-based camper van will be available for order in the UK in November, although its price has not been announced yet.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Ford has unveiled the long wheelbase version of its Transit Custom-based Nugget camper van, which now features a bathroom in the rear and an additional sink.

The long wheelbase, or "LWB" for short, Nugget's arrival to the market accompanies a family of three: the original Nugget, and the concept Big Nugget.

Like the first Nugget, Ford partnered with Westfalia to create the new long wheelbase iteration, which now has a full camper interior all inside of a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel engine-powered van. And unlike its predecessors, the LWB Nugget uses an L-shaped layout to fit the bathroom, kitchen, and living space.

Separate from the Nugget series, the Ford Transit has become a popular camper van base for both do-it-yourself van builders and van conversion companies like Vanlife Customs. Recently, travel startup Cabana took the Ford Transit a step beyond thisby deploying a fleet of converted 2019 Transit-based camper vans to serve as its mobile hotel unit.

Besides the popularity of the Transit base, the new extended length Nugget comes at a time in which camper van sales have stayed resilient, and in some cases, skyrocketed, amid the pandemic.

Keep scrolling to see how the famed automaker has turned its own van into a multi-space tiny home on wheels:

According to a statement by the general manager of commercial vehicles for Ford of Europe Hans Schep, the camper has a "home-from-home" feel to it.

The layout’s dining and living area can be converted into passenger seats while traveling.

The roof of the van, which can hold a roof rack, is tilted, allowing Nugget to fit in locations with maximum height restrictions, according to Ford.

At night when the van is parked, the roof can be expanded to make space for its double sized bed with vents and a LED reading light.

The roof bed, which is one of two sleeping spaces in the van, can also be tucked away for more interior room.

*FORD NUGGET* - The CAMPER VAN TOUR You've Been Waiting For!

Ford Transit Big Nugget Camper Van Is Bonkers

It has plenty of room inside and goes on sale next year

Attention campers: Ford has gone big and rolled out an all-new concept caravan called the Transit Big Nugget. It's a near-production study shown first at the 2019 Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, Germany. The bigger Nugget will go on sale next year, when it will join the littler Nugget and Nugget Plus as options for van-based holidays. The latest addition to the Nugget family is based on the high-roof version of the new Ford Transit with a long wheelbase. It's 19.7 feet long and offers 6.7 feet of interior standing height. Like the other Nugs, the conversion was handled by the camper craftsmen at Westfalia in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. The front-wheel-drive Ford Transit camper van is powered by a choice of two 2.0-liter EcoBlue turbodiesel engines that deliver either 105 or 185 hp. You can see more details (and the smaller Nugget) in the gallery below.

This Ford Transit camper van features a kitchenette with storage compartments, a two-burner stove, and an 18.5-gallon refrigerator. There's a closed bath area with a toilet, sink, and shower located in the center on the driver's side of the cabin. The fresh and wastewater tanks hold 26.4 gallons each and allow for longer travel intervals. There's a huge, two-person transverse bed in the rear that measures 78.7 inches long and 60.6 inches wide, and the rear half of the bed can be folded to allow room for two bicycles to be stored inside. Interior volume for the high-roof cabin is estimated at about 459 cubic feet. There are 230-volt power sockets, two USB and two 12-volt power points, and several dimmable LED spotlights. The driver and front passenger seats rotate, and a two-way bench on the driver's side can be moved and adjusted to accommodate four campers.

Unfortunately, like all versions of the Nugget, this one is destined to remain unavailable in the U.S., as it will be offered only in European markets despite its popularity with Ford and camper fans here. If you're lucky enough to live where the Nugget is offered, Ford expects production of the Big Nugget to begin in the first half of 2020. Pricing will be announced closer to its launch date.
