The Kawasaki KX was a cc, off-road motorcycle and motocross motorcycle manufactured by Kawasaki from through and again from through

Kawasaki did not produce production motocross machines for the model year, as their previous version had been proven obsolete by the introduction of long-travel suspension by Kawasaki's competitors, most notably the Suzuki RMA. Kawasaki returned in with a limited production and totally revised KXA The KX models were the first to use a modern single-shock rear suspension. Water-cooling and front disk brake were instituted with the models.

The KX introduced in was Kawasaki's first serious attempt at a production motorcross bike. This differed from their earlier efforts in that it wasn't an offshoot of a mainly enduro themed machine. It began a line of production motocrossers that are highly respected for their strength and competitiveness. Kawasaki has always followed a route of continuous development for their KX series lending them to always be competitive and for the speed at which factory racing developments make it into the production machines.

The first KX was based largely on Jimmy Weinert's machine.

The engine was a liquid cooled single cylinder, four-stroke. A mm bore x mm stroke result in a displacement of just cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a double overhead cams/twin cam (dohc).

Drive[edit | edit source]

The bike has a 5-speed transmission. Power was moderated via the wet multi-disc, manual.

Chassis[edit | edit source]

It came with a 80/ front tire and a / rear tire. Stopping was achieved via single disc in the front and a single disc in the rear. The front suspension was a inverted telescopic separate function front fork (sff) type 2, way compression damping, way rebound damping and way spring preload adustability while the rear was equipped with a uni-trak with adjustable dual-range (2 turns high speed / way low-speed) compression damping, adjustable way rebound damping and fully adjustable spring preload. The KX was fitted with a Gallon ( Liters) fuel tank. The bike weighed just pounds ( Kg). The wheelbase was inches ( mm) long.

KAWASAKI KX - Increased Power

There&#;s no standing still in the quest for cc motocross supremacy, even when you are the best. So, although the Kawasaki KX KX swept all of the major magazine shootouts and quickly sold out on the showroom floors, the KX has further refinements to keep Kawasaki on top.

The restyled and revised KX has even more power than before. Engine performance is further improved with the addition of a new carburetor featuring the Kawasaki Throttle Responsive Ignition Control (K-TRIC) throttle position sensor.

The all-new, 38mm "shorty" Keihin Power Jet carburetor places the main jet, slide and needle closer to the engine for improved throttle response, and the K-TRIC sensor provides quick acceleration. For &#;99, the digital CDI unit alters ignition timing according to engine speed and engine load as indicated by the throttle opening. This produces a three-dimensional timing map to improve acceleration, especially from low speed to about 1/3 of full-throttle. KX

For smooth power during engine over-rev, the carburetor&#;s power jet system uses an electronic solenoid to close a fuel passage for more accurate fuel delivery to the engine to extend the power peak.

The flywheel has been changed to offer more flywheel effect to get the extra power to the ground.

The main frame tubes of the high-tensile steel perimeter frame use thinner tubing and the rear sub-frame assembly is now made of box-section aluminum. The main frame spars are tilted downward slightly to lower the fuel tank, centralize mass and provide a longer, flatter seating position.

Several suspension components were changed to reduce unsprung weight, which is critical to suspension performance. Although the aluminum rear swingarm appears unchanged, it has been lightened by removing excess mass in the front casting. The UNI-TRAK� suspension linkage was lightened but linkage ratios remain the same, and several internal components on the fully adjustable rear shock, now with low and high speed compression damping, were changed from steel to aluminum.

There are also several new aluminum parts in the inverted cartridge front fork. The diameter of the outer aluminum fork tubes was reduced 2mm at the triple clamp surface to eliminate weight. Both the outer and inner tubes are strengthened and the overlap between the two tubes is increased for smoother action, especially during "slap-down" jump landings. New rubber dampers reduce harsh bottoming, and new axle clamps on the bottom of the fork legs offer more clamping rigidity on the lighter front axle.

There is a new look to the KX With the fuel tank dropped further into the frame, the seat now extends farther forward and is flatter for better rider maneuverability. The rear fender has a smoother shape and the radiator shrouds and side panels are new and distinctly different.

Kawasaki attacks the highly-competitive cc motocross class with a highly-revised KX for that is intended KX to continue the winning ways established by AMA cc Eastern Regional Supercross and AMA cc National Motocross Champion Ricky Carmichael. An all-new chassis makes it more compact, while new porting and a new carburetor with the Kawasaki Throttle Responsive Ignition Control (K-TRIC) electronic throttle position sensor boost power output.

The Kawasaki Integrated Powervalve System (KIPS), which automatically varies exhaust port timing according to engine speed for a broader powerband, seals better to the piston and cylinder to increase power across the rev range.

An all-new 36mm "shorty" Keihin Power Jet carburetor is fitted to the &#;99 KX KX The new carburetor places the main jet, slide and needle 12mm closer to the engine for improved throttle response, and the all-new K-TRIC sensor provides quick acceleration. The digital capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) unit now alters ignition timing according to engine speed and engine load as indicated by the throttle opening. This produces a three-dimensional timing map to improve acceleration and throttle response, especially from low speed to about 1/3 of full-throttle.

For smooth power during engine over-rev, the carburetor&#;s power jet system uses an electronic solenoid to close a fuel passage for more accurate fuel delivery to the engine to extend the power peak.

Overall engine weight is reduced by shaving excess mass from the gears in the six-speed transmission. The clutch cover is now made of lightweight magnesium.

The high-tensile steel perimeter frame is now more compact. The steering head was moved back 15mm and the rear sub-frame assembly is now made of box-section aluminum alloy. The main frame spars are tilted downward slightly to lower the fuel tank, centralize mass and provide a longer, flatter seating position.

Although the aluminum rear swingarm looks basically unchanged, it has been lightened by removing excess mass in the front casting and the length has been shortened 10mm to improve overall handling. The UNI-TRAK� suspension linkage was lightened but the linkage ratios remain unchanged, and several components on the fully adjustable rear shock, now with low and high speed compression damping adjustments, have been changed to aluminum.

There are also several new aluminum components in the inverted cartridge front fork. The diameter of the outer aluminum fork tubes was reduced 2mm at the triple clamp surface to eliminate weight. Both the outer and inner tubes are strengthened and the overlap between the two tubes is increased for smoother action, especially during "slap-down" jump landings. New rubber dampers reduce harsh bottoming, and new axle clamps on the bottom of the fork legs offer more clamping rigidity on the lighter front axle.

New U-shaped DID rims are utilized for their light weight, high strength and factory appearance, and their rounded shoulders also tend to shed mud in wet conditions to save pounds of possible build-up. The spokes feature lightweight aluminum nipples and the new Dunlop D tire, which is nearly a half pound lighter, is fitted to the rear wheel.

All of the changes to the suspension components and wheels reduce unsprung weight for optimum suspension performance.

Rounding out the changes to the KX is a new look. With the fuel tank dropped further into the frame, the seat now extends farther forward and is flatter for better rider maneuverability. The rear fender has a smoother shape and the radiator shrouds and side panels are new and distinctly different from last year.

    KAWASAKI KX - A Step Up

    Designed as a stepping stone for riders who are too big for a KX80 but aren&#;t quite ready for a KX, the Kawasaki KX KX presents a unique combination of full-sized power in a smaller package. Larger than the traditional 80cc minicycle, the KX gets its increased stature with the addition of larger wheels, minor chassis adjustments and increased displacement.

    The KX is powered by a liquid-cooled two-stroke engine very similar to the one found in the KX Displacement is increased from 82cc to 99cc with a mm larger bore.
