Written by Amna Mufti, and directed by Sarmad Khoosat, this mini series is a narration of seven different stories of women from various walk of lives and their struggles.

Episode 1: Yasmeen &#; A Protective Mother

First story focuses on Yasmeen, her unemployeed-gambler-drinking husband who eventually bets his wife. She is broke after the incident, but still says nothing. When he talks about his plans for future make his daughter earn a living for them the same way, she makes a bold decision. To run away with her daughter, for a safer, if not better, life.

Episode 2: Gul Meena &#; Her Baby is Her Life

Second story focused on Gul Meena. She and her in-laws&#; family are running away from terrorists. Her husband dies soon after theirson is born. Her mother in law accuses her of seducing her brother-in-law and marries her away to an old man with kids. Fed up with double standards of how woman accepts his new husband&#;s kids but the husband does not accept step children. She runs away, to search her in-laws and unite with her son, Rustom Khan.

Episode 3: Farzana &#; Fate of Love Marriage

Third story is about Farzana, a well-educated girl. She had pressurized her parents for love marriage, and is now dealing with her abusing husband. She endures all sorts of taunts and torture. Finally, it comes down to accusing her of bad character. Beaten blue and black, she also runs away from him.

Amazing acting by the husband Sajad.

Episode 4: Rafia &#; HIV and the Social Stigmna

Fourth story is about Rafia, who&#;s drug addict husband, and then she, contracts  HIV. There is certain stigma attached to this acronym. Rafia&#;s story shows us the same. She&#;s travelling for her treatment.

Episode 5: Shabana &#; A Thief&#;s Wife

Fifth story shows Nimra Buccha as Shabana. Her husband is a thief and with two kids to take care of. She starts working as a domestic help, only to be taunted and reminded of her husband&#;s deeds. Pregnant with third, she loses the baby while working as a labour in farms. She leaves her house for work in Karachi.

Episode 6: Shumaila &#; Victim Of Acid Attack

Sixth story is of Shumaila, a very beautiful woman . She is married to an average looking, older, and therefore insecure husband. Nothing she says or does, convinces him of her loyalty and love towards him and his family. Victim of acid attack, she&#;s travelling for the rehabilitation and treatment.

Episode 7: Tehmina &#; Dealing With Suicide Of A Loved One

Lastly, seventh story is of Tehmina. She is traumatized by the life, and later by the suicide of her mother. She&#;s cynic about everything. Struggles with emotions. Finally sees a psychiatrist, recovers from depression, and decides to write a book about her experiences. She is travelling for the same &#; to meet new people, and to see new worlds.

Review

Although painful, these stories are beautifully narrated. I have my pick of best moments from all seven episodes:

One, when the milk vendor hands over the money to chhotu, asking to have it washed and ironed. And then washed his hand, to cleanse himself, that he touched impure money.

Second, that look on Tehmina&#;s face when she realizes her troubles were so little compared to what others seem to suffer. This one is my favorite, because, we ALL, generally feel the same. Again, one of her lines &#;Khushi un logon ke liye hai jo kuchh sochte nahi hain&#;, is quite true.

And that line from farzana &#;The problem with us educated girls is that we want to find solutions for everything&#;.

I&#;ve always admired Sanam (who hasn&#;t) and a terrific performance was guaranteed. But it was the character Yasmeen that blew me away. The cast is perfect, each one doing their bits just right. A great performance by each one of them.

This is the first time I&#;ve seen a Sarmad Khoosat direction. I&#;ve always wanted to watch &#;Manto&#;. I knew he likes grave, bold, and dark subjects. Brilliantly done, sir!

These stories are not new. We&#;ve read it in fiction and in real and have watched it on TV, too. But how those stories are brought together in narration to send a positive inspiring constructive message is commendable.

Mujhe apney jeenay Ka haq chahiye

Desi Rants N Raves

If Yasmin&#;s story was gut wrenching and Gulmeena&#;s eye-opening, Farzana&#;s story hit where it hurt the most.

Domestic abuse, more particularly marital abuse is an unfortunate reality, but we the polite society tend to distance ourselves from it by thinking of this ugly truth as &#;their&#; problem. Theirs as in not ours. Ours as in we the educated classes. All the marna peetna &#;  this happens among the lower classes. The unrefined them vs the refined us. Parhey likhay humvs the unparh them. The sophisticated us vs uncouth them. Such are the false binaries behind which we hide ourselves and our dirty little secrets.

Emotional, physical, financial &#; all are forms of abuse and impact all strata of society, irrespective of whether we own up to it or not.

The rhythmic clickety-clack of the train makes for an apt accompaniment for songs of love and separation as each woman is lost in her reverie. Now that she&#;s managed to escape an abusive marriage Yasmin thinks of the challenges that await her in Karachi. Gulmeena&#;s story brings to Tehmina&#;s mind ugly memories she&#;d rather not remember. Even as they are opening up to each other &#; their body language more relaxed, seats swapped for comfort &#; not every woman is ready to look the other women in the eye and open up.

Farzana wants to share her story, the keen attention she&#;d paid earlier betrayed her interest. But it isn&#;t quite that easy for her, is it? Unlike the other two women, who were socio-economically less fortunate, Farzana is highly educated, financially independent and free to make her life choices. Paradoxically though, it is these precise privileges that hold her back from opening up, to either her fellow passengers or to her well-wishers earlier.

But open up now she does. In a beautifully executed scene I loved how Farzana chose to tell her story while laying on the top berth, hidden from the other women&#;s direct view, shielding herself from what she fears would be judgmental gazes. What she doesn&#;t realize is that far worse than what any one else can say is her own self-flagellation. Even after escaping her tormentor and knowing better, she still blames herself and diminishes her troubles. Haltingly first, then picking up the narrative she begins from the beginning, when she and Sajjad were a newly married couple.

Typically our drams tend to show women from the other side of the metaphoric train tracks as the victims of domestic or marital abuse. What made this episode so very particularly poignant and meaningful was that Farzana was not the &#;other&#; &#; she was like us, one among us. She lives in the city not in some village somewhere. How then could she get entangled in a situation like this? How could she marry such a loser?  How could she not see the warning signs? Didn&#;t she know better?

Amna Mufti&#;s screenplay is effective in detailing the buildup to the abuse and depicts very well the mindset of an abused woman. The fact that Farzana saw herself and was seen as a &#;strong&#; woman made it harder for her to accept that she had made a wrong choice and was stuck in a toxic relationship with an insecure man. She had well-meaning friends around but their advice was ignored.

This leads to the question: Why have we as a society made it so difficult for all the Farzanas to admit to a mistake. Does education and financial independence mean that a woman should have to work harder and suffer in silence to prove that she can do it all, and that too perfectly? Isn&#;t this price too much to pay for the prized title of a perfect all-rounder?

Related to the issue of domestic abuse is the issue of the children. Even as we talk of adults as victims we must not forget the children: Those who grow up witnessing violence and those who are also victims themselves. In both cases children grow up with violence normalized to the point it becomes routine and an acceptable way of life.

Another bias, so strongly imbibed that it goes almost unnoticed, is the insistence on perfection. Gori rangat, rang ke hisab se kaprey, gora baccha, pyara baccha, larka hona chahiye &#; none of which the woman has any control over. The fact that such &#;demands&#; are made even by educated husbands and families goes to show that degrees on the wall are no cure for jahalat of the mind.

An important point highlighted is the lack of awareness about mental health issues, for men and women. Sajjad needs help but no one in his family seems to realize it; his mother covers it up while his brother cracks joke about his stern disposition. Farzana for all her education cannot see the signs of her husband&#;s increasingly serious condition. One can only wonder about the uneducated, rural populace if this is the state of awareness among the educated urbanites.

What I am appreciating here is the way the stories connect and overlap, hence even as each episode is self-contained there is a carryover element that opens the following episode on a familiar note. Also praiseworthy is the way the new stories are being gradually introduced. Tehmina&#;s flashback is very intriguing and I am looking forward to seeing her story unfold. Also the latest entrant in the compartment has literally brought her baggage on-board, so am looking forward to seeing her reasons for travelling alone.

Overall I found this episode a lot more cohesive, better knit and the tightly written than the previous one. Acting wise Malika Zafar was fantastic as Farzana, conveying her the ebbs and flows of her character&#;s emotions very well. Shah Fahad was an able partner as her parha likha jahil shohar.  I am really liking the new faces we are getting to see here. Nimra Bucha made her entry today and that makes me a very happy camper. Irfan Khoosat is excellent in his cameo appearances.

Like the previous episodes this one too was a visual and aesthetic delight. I am loving the attention to details &#; the sound design, swapping of seats in the train, Farzana on the upper berth, accessories and costumes of the small town singers, Gulmeena covering her face when the chaiwalla enters the compartment, Sanam&#;s gradually vanishing eye liner &#; small touches, but they all go a long way in creating the necessary ambiance for the story to have the necessary impact.

Locked doors are a recurring theme and it is interesting how each door is different and is shot differently. But even as they are all unique the one commonality is they all hold darkness within. Thankfully all these women have managed to escape despite the locked doors. And this is what make Aakhri Station unique &#; there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Aakhri Station Episode 5 - 13th March 2018 - ARY Digital Drama

Women are considered a minority worldwide (a minority literally means fewer in number but according to sociology, it means being a sub-ordinate to a dominant group), a race that has been subjected to violence in even the most developed countries. According to a poll in , Pakistan is the third most dangerous country for women in the world. It indicates that more than women are murdered in “honor killings” every year and about 90 percent of Pakistani women suffer from domestic violence of some sort.

The plight of women described in Aakhri Station revolves around the same heart-breaking and untold miseries being faced by the minority. To raise an issue, one must acknowledge that the problem exists before acting upon it to look for solutions. Many blame it on religious oppression but the reality is far more complicated. There is a certain mentality that is deeply ingrained in a society like Pakistan, where a woman must live in a culture as defined by the male figures in their lives, even though often times, these women are the breadwinners for their families.

Kashf Foundation’s Aakhri Station throws light on the unfortunate circumstances faced by Pakistan’s most vulnerable minority, and Amna Mufti’s excellent screenplay is extremely effective in depicting the lives of women belonging to different strata of the society. Although, all women are from different backgrounds of the society, culturally and economically, the one binding factor between all of them is their struggle for basic rights, recognition and respect. All four episodes so far have been different but interwoven beautifully with the crux of the issue being same in all of these women.

Last week’s episode introduced us to Farzana’s story. The way she started her story was surprising; she was ashamed of herself for believing that her difficulties were “nothing” as compared to the other two women, almost to the point of blaming herself. It is ironic that being educated made her feel embarrassed to divulge her family life making her think that it’s a weakness to even acknowledge that the apparently independent Farzana is a victim of domestic violence. This was a meaningful point made by the writer that even the most outwardly independent women could be suffering behind closed doors.

In her guilt, Farzana went to the upper bunk to lay down, and angrily stopped the women singing on the train. Seeing her irritated mood, an inquisitive Tehmeena questioned her behavior to which a broken Farzana narrated her entire story. Farzana has been married to Sajjad who has personality disorder, and the patriarchal system they belong to does not help either although, she does have a supportive mother-in-law. Even though, Sajjad’s mother is aware that her son has a problem, it never crossed her mind to seek help for him. Mental illnesses are still considered a taboo in the desi society and it is high time that they be treated just as any other illness. The fact that even an educated Farzana did not spot her husband’s medical condition speaks of how women in Pakistan aren’t much aware of mental illnesses, domestic violence and their warning signs.

Farzana’s husband has many issues including controlling narcissistic behavior, anger issues, inferiority complex, etc. but the only issue that I found most disturbing was the demand for a “gora” child. He paradoxically believed that he was better-looking than his wife because of his skin color, and took every opportunity to put her down. Skin color has always been a significant part of the desi mindset, and it is engraved in a person’s mind starting from childhood if how lighter skin tone is more beautiful than dark skin. Remember when your mother used to say “dhoop main naheen khelo, kalay ho jaogey?” I am not even sure what the origin of this mentality is but it continues to plague the desi societies worldwide.

Farzana’s story has also made another important point that domestic violence is not merely seen amongst the impoverished and uneducated but effects women belonging to various socio-economic classes. Farzana, despite being educated, modern, so-called “liberated” woman, was subjugated to violence and abuse, be it emotional, verbal or physical. The cycle of abuse and the mental trauma the victim undergoes was depicted well. When Farzana reaches her breaking point, she elopes with her baby ending up on the same train. It was interesting to see that she chose not to go to her parent’s place, knowing pretty well that they would want her to forgive and reconcile because divorce is still considered a stigma in our society. Don’t get me wrong, marriage counseling and reconciliation should be considered whenever possible; however, in Farzana’s case, her husband was too weak to acknowledge that he needed help.

During these two episodes, Tehmeena’s (Sanam Saeed) story is being introduced gradually with flashbacks that are intertwined with the story of the day. Tehmeena’s flashback was followed by Rafia’s story (being played by Farah Tufail) which described the negative impact of substance abuse not only on the abuser but the entire family coupled with strong patriarchal elements which were interwoven nicely.

Rafiya’s introduction was fitting as well, announcing that she has AIDS and she’s going to seek treatment, which initially made the other women in the compartment uncomfortable but when she explained about the transmission of HIV, the body language of the women changed to more ease. Just to point out, HIV is transmitted sexually from infected mother to baby, sharing needles, and contaminated blood transfusions and organ transplant but kissing, touching, sharing cutlery and toilet seats will not give you HIV – this wasn’t clear enough in the drama to break the taboo of quarantining people suffering from AIDS.

Rafiya is married to her cousin namely Pervez, and seemingly living a happy life, which was later confirmed by her baji, when drugs take over her husband’s life. Rafia has a daughter and her mother-in-law blames Rafia for her son’s distraught state after work, and a girl that she has reproduced. I don’t understand how these people forget that Islam honors women like no other religion, and our Prophet (PBUH) only had daughters. Female infanticide was a commonplace before Islam, and if someone thinks that the patriarchal culture is an offshoot of Islam, s/he is strongly mistaken. Coming back to Rafia, her mother-in-law is obviously not fond of her, and when Rafia tries to divulge her concerns about Pervez’s suspicious behavior, she is being blamed for defaming Pervez.

Drug abuse impacts not only physical health but also mental health, making the addict more prone to depression, anxiety, hallucinations, domestic abuse and violence. It is not surprising that Rafia is being blamed for Pervez’s behavior and she is being asked to leave her home. Later, circumstances reveal that both Pervez and Rafia are HIV positive and of course, it’s easier for her mother-in-law to blame Rafia for her son’s medical condition to the point of calling her a prostitute and doubting her chastity. Rafia leaves with her daughter and finds refuge in her sister’s home where months go by until one day she finds that Pervez has passed away due to overdose.

Baji is an intriguing character. When Rafia seeks advice regarding her husband’s drug addiction, she first points out how Sajjad has always treated her well, and he must be broken from inside too. Whenever Sajjad comes to apologize and promises to seek help, she always believed him, forcing Rafia to do the same. In her mind, Rafia always knew that it was too late, which was later confirmed when Sajjad manipulated her and stole her hard earned money. A drug addict will do anything in a state of withdrawal, which was portrayed brilliantly in the screenplay.

Finally, the truth Rafia had been hiding, came out in front of Baji’s husband. The story ends there, but I can imagine that she will have to leave because she is being considered as “contagious.” One of the scenes that literally brought tears to my eyes was when Rafia, while knowing about her own medical condition, asks her sister to take care of her daughter, to educate her and to make her someone that Rafia herself couldn’t become. She wanted the best for her daughter, like any mother would want and put herself down. She didn’t realize her own worth. Educated or not, Rafia is just as strong as Farzana – women who decided to take action instead of surrendering to their fate. Indeed, God helps those who help themselves.

Akhri Station Episode 3 Review &#; Less Impressive

First of all, this review has been delayed due to extremely adverse weather conditions and communication disruption in this part of the world.

Coming to the third episode, the story line and plot was very realistic  and very relatable, but the acting and screen play left a lot to be desired. Malika Zafar starts the story by acknowledging that it is not as bad as the atrocities suffered by Yasmeen and Gulmeena. However, that was an understatement since even though her problems were not as basic as being asked to sell her body for food in the house or her child being snatched, they were nonetheless equally painful. To live in a psychologically and emotionally abusive environment is very very hard and it takes a lot out of the woman. I did not find her problems to be any less, they were very much real and very troublesome, but the acting was not at par with the others in the play. The male actor who I’m seeing for the first time had a slight twitch on talking, which was probably part of his role but was not very pleasing to the eye, nor was his dialogue delivery.

Akhri Station Episode 3 Review - Less Impressive

It was shown that Farzana had been so blind in love that she ended up with a man like Sajjad who was not only abusive, but had a major personality disorder. She tried her hardest to tolerate his attitude but there was a breaking point at which she just left with her infant daughter. From getting insulted in front of their guests, to being a victim of constant criticism as a pregnant women and ultimately being character shamed, Farzana put up with more than her fair share in the doomed marriage. This is a very genuinely observed plot because such marriages are very common in our society where the wife has to bear so many social, emotional and psychological scars over the course of their relationships that it reduces perfectly reasonable, educated and talented women to psychotic wives, barely getting on with the business of living and raising kids and frequently on anti depressants.

Farzana’s mother in law was supportive and understanding of her situation and had a realistic view of her son’s shortcomings. Seeing her getting support from her inlaws was the best part of the play. Her mother in law behaves as a woman first and a saas afterward which was probably one of the factors that Farzana did not blame herself for Sajjad’s behaviors, but rather sought out a solution for her and her daughter’s well being. When the inlaws join in the emotional abuse, while being fully aware of their son’s flaws, is where the women usually suffer extreme low self esteem and indecision and keep on questioning their own worth. Luckily that was not the case with Farzana.

When they become first time parents in the play, Sajjad finds a new reason to torture his wife and criticises her on every aspect of mothering. He even insults her parents by calling their gifts cheap and fit for charity only. This is also very realistic of emotional abuse that the husband usually wants to cut off his wife from all her relations and well wishers.  It is the insecurity that makes him want to hurt her where it is most sensitive, since parents and their gifts are a raw nerve for almost every married woman, no matter what the resources are.

Akhri Station Episode 3 Review - Less Impressive

Lastly, Sajjad even starts doubting her character and calls her an irresponsible mother and indifferent wife because she works out to spend time with male colleagues, as he puts it. One day, as he was degrading her in his usual way, Farzana loses her cool and answers him back. She gives him a very realistic answer that he should be thankful of her that she is still living with him if he thinks she is out of the house to meet men. Ofcourse, this becomes unbearable for a narcissist like him and he drags her inside, leaving the baby scared and crying at this sudden display of violence.

I think there is more to Farzana’s story that will be disclosed in the next episode. Stay tuned and share your views about this episode.
