Intro

Most Animal Crossing players have come across in-game items that they adore. Whether it's a hat that blocks out the sun or a towering monster statue that guards your home, Nintendo has created a deep well of content for players to enjoy. And that's not all. Players can also make their own custom designs that can be shared with anyone in the world for free. The custom designs show off the player's artistic abilities, and often bring licensed content into the game, such as an Overwatch t-shirt or a painting of a certain goose.

Custom content can be added in two ways. The first is NookLink, which is a part of the Nintendo Switch Online service found on your real-world phone (which requires Switch Online subscription). NookLink allows you to scan QR codes using your phone's camera. Once a code is scanned correctly, bring up your fake phone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and go to custom designs to find the item of note.

The second way just takes a little playing (and a Switch Online subscription). Once you unlock the Able Sisters' shop, you'll find a terminal that leads to the Custom Designs Portal. Here, you can enter a code (as seen on the images below) to download a specific item or see what a specific designer has made. You can also use this portal to upload and share your own marvelous creations.

Below is a selection of some of the coolest items the Game Informer crew found thus far. Many come from Margaret Andrews and Kristin Williams, two of Game Informer's web designers and programmers. They have a great eye for in-game content, and wanted to share it with all of you. This list will hopefully continue to grow over the course of the year with new discoveries. We'd also like to see your art or your favorite pieces in the comments section below.

Have fun playing, and beware of the tarantulas!

Animal Crossing New Horizons QR Codes and Custom Designs: Download NookLink, open Able Sisters

While Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes preloaded with a huge choice of beautiful clothes, you can use Custom Designs to build a look that truly reflects your individuality.

Using QR codes you can download the best creations from around the world through the magic of black-and-white squares: including fresh clothes, fun flags, and even special fabrics and floors that are easy to add to your island home.

Or you can flex your own creativity and don your own custom designs featuring your snazziest motifs, as well as sharing them with the world using the Custom Design Kiosk: once you make friends with the Able Sisters and open their shop, you'll be able to input alphanumeric codes to share and download brand new custom designs too.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

Below you'll find the basics of how to get started with custom designs, including instructions on how to download NookLink; how to open up the Able Sisters' Shop; and how to use the Custom Design Kiosk to download others' creations and upload your own. Then, read on for our picks of the best custom designs in ACNH.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons QR Codes - How to download NookLink

Before you can get started with QR Codes, you’ll need a smart device with access to either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. This can be a smartphone or tablet.

Also, to get NookLink and scan Animal Crossing New Horizons QR Codes on your Nintendo Switch, you will need to pay for the premium Nintendo Switch Online service. It costs £18, 20€, or $20 for a full year for a single account - or £31.49, 35€, or $35 for a family pass of 8 accounts.

It can be purchased from the official Nintendo site, here. Yes, it’s not ideal, but Tom Nook’s fabulous Hawaiian shirts don’t pay for themselves.

Don’t make the mistake of just searching “NookLink” in your app store of choice. To download and scan Animal Crossing: New Horizons QR codes, you need to first download the “Nintendo Switch Online” App.

It’s picture is the Nintendo Switch logo of two Joy-Cons with “Online” underneath.

Once you’ve downloaded the app onto your device, you need to sign in with the Nintendo account you have linked to the console you play Animal Crossing on.

Now, open the app and you should see Animal Crossing: New Horizons as a “Game-specific Service”.

Next, you need to prepare Animal Crossing on your Switch console. Open Animal Crossing: New Horizons on your Switch, then press “-” (minus) on the title screen.

This opens the settings menu, where you’ll be able to enable NookLink in the NookLink settings.

With your smart device and console linked, you will now be able to transfer items generated by Animal Crossing: New Horizons QR codes between the two.

Go into your New Horizons game and you will be able to use the “Custom Designs” app on your Nookphone. To unlock the Pro part of the app - which lets you put designs on clothes other than tank tops - you need to visit the Nook Stop at Residential Services and unlock it with 800 Nook Miles.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Custom Designs - How to open the Able Sisters' Shop

After a few days on your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island, you will be able to upload your own custom designs once you gain access to the Able Sisters’ shop. They’ll give you your creator code and access to the online portion where you can generate codes for your own designs.

QR Codes are for patterns generated by older Animal Crossing Games. If you make a new design in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you receive an alphanumeric code that you can input at the Able Sisters’ shop to get an item.

To open the Able Sisters' shop, you first need to speak to Mable when she visits your town plaza selling clothes. Spend bells on the designs she has available, and after a couple of visits she'll see the opportunity to open a full tailor's shop.

Once you've opened the Able Sisters' shop, remember to speak to Sable as well as Mable every single day. She'll be prickly at first, be eventually tell you more about her backstory and give you custom designs of her own.

How to use the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Custom Designs Kiosk

A couple of days after you've picked out a spot for the shop, it will open. Inside, head over to the back wall of the shop and you'll find a computer kiosk.

Interact with the Kiosk and you will be able to connect to the internet. With a Nintendo Online subscription, you will be able to search for custom designs either with a creator code or item code - as well as share you own designs.

Where to find the best Animal Crossing: New Horizons Custom Designs and QR Codes

As for where you can find cool QR and code items for yourself, the best places to look are the online communities of Animal Crossing: New Horizons players.

These include the ACQR subreddit (link), and searching “Animal Crossing QR Codes” on Twitter (link).

Alternatively, you can create your own QR codes by uploading jpegs to ACToolKit (linked).

In these places you’ll find fabric, tops, dresses, shorts, hats, and prints, all emblazoned with absolutely anything you can think of.

There are cute, fashionable clothing designs, cosplays of your favorite characters, but most of all: memes. Memes as far as the eye can see.

For flat prints, you will only need one QR code. But if the design is stretched out over a 3-d object like a t-shirt, then you will need 4 QR codes to catch each side. Otherwise, just input the code at the Able Sisters for freshly created patterns.

Below are a few of our favourites we’ve seen so far.

The Best Animal Crossing: New Horizons Custom Designs: Theme Your Island For Winter

Winter is well and truly here in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (assuming you're playing in the northern hemisphere). Here are just a few of our favourite seasonal designs.

Isabelle's sweater:
But for anyone else who suffered major pangs of envy when Isabelle donned her gorgeous cold-weather sweater, help is at hand thanks to Twitter user @llymiint:

Snowy path
For anyone who'd like their snow-covered island to look a little more natural this winter, u/moonlitt_ has created this path design:

Christmas clothing
There's no shortage of Christmas clothing available in the game, but that hasn't stopped ACNH creatives from introducing their own unique designs to compete with what the Able Sisters offer, such as this series of designs uploaded by u/petit_chou_:

Christmas in summer
This collaborative effort between half a dozen users, uploaded under the u/ACNH_SKdesigns account, might prove especially popular with players in the southern hemisphere: a collection of Christmas and New Year holiday-themed clothing that's nevertheless suited to warmer weather.

Ugly sweaters (with a gaming theme)
Fandom-themed ugly sweaters have been a hot ticket item for real-life geeks over the past couple of Christmases. Bring that same energy to your ACNH avatar with these Nintendo-inspired designs uploaded by u/heartphilialive:

Cat hoodies
If you're a fan of cute cats, comfortable clothing, and Christmas cheer (and since you're an ACNH player it's a fair bet you're at least one of the three), this series of cat hoodies and holiday sweaters uploaded by u/interrobang__ may just be the custom design you didn't know you needed:

The Best Animal Crossing: New Horizons Custom Designs: Timeless Designs for All Year Round

No matter what the time of year, these custom designs will get you well on your way to making your island that little more personalised, from cosplaying as your favourite fictional characters to livening things up with a few more varied designs.

How to Make, Share, and Use Other Players' Custom Designs

The Custom Designs app lets you make your own designs or download some via QR codes. Once you unlock the Able Sisters shop you can approach the Kiosk and Post any of your custom designs, Search by Design ID, or Search by Creator ID. You need a paid subscription to Nintendo Online to access this feature.

You can "wear" any of the QR code designs you download (from New Leaf or a third party, fanmade site like ACPatterns) on a generic top or face paint. (You can also put them on the ground/floor, walls, or in canvas form). If scanning a Pro Design, you can wear it as a dress, robe, etc but all other Designs will be relegated to being a "custom design" instead of a more versatile Pro Design.

And until you get the Able Sisters shop there's now way to directly share the designs originally made in ACNH.

So this Able Sisters Kiosk lets you get and share designs originally made in Animal Crossing: New Horizons via a Creator ID or individual Design ID. This even includes pro designs! Which can be garments such as tops (tank top, short sleeve, long-sleeve dress shirt, sweater, hoodie, coat) dresses (sleeveless, short-sleeve, long sleeve, round, balloon-hem, robe), and hats (brimmed cap, knit cap, and brimmed hat). The Pro Design upgrade can be purchased at Nook

Saving other players' designs is totally free. No bells, no Nook Miles! All you need is an empty design slot.

How to Find and Share Your Creator ID

You may have already made some cool designs made by the time you unlock the Able Sisters shop. To share them you can post the your Creator ID!

To get your creator code approach the able sister Kiosk and hit share. This will generate and display your code!

How To Get Custom Designs in 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons'

Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to be an outlet for calm and pretending you’re socializing outdoors. While in real life, most of us are probably hanging out on our couches in sweat pants and an old oversized sweater, New Horizons gives us the opportunity not only to make our own fancy outfits, but snag the stylish endeavors of others. Custom designs in the game have gotten elaborate, and players have been showing off their creations, from band t-shirts to character costume remakes, and if you're wondering how people have been able to pull these off (or if you want to nab them for yourself), read on. We’ll tell you everything you need to know to start turning your wardrobe, your home, and your village into something incredibly snazzy -- and we even have a few recommendations.

Thrillist TV

How to Get Custom Designs in Animal Crossing

There are two ways to import designs from the web onto your island. Be warned that designs you upload are marked with a little “no edit” icon because you… well… can’t edit them.

Option 1: QR Code
If you -- or someone on the internet -- has an excellent design from New Leaf that they want to import into New Horizons, all you need is the old design’s QR code!

Alternately, this website allows you to create your masterpiece on your browser -- or upload any photo to convert into a custom design! Which explains how memes and Beyoncé album covers are making their ways on to villagers’ walls with shocking accuracy.

Be warned, these only work for normal designs. But excellence will still flow forth.

1) Get the Nintendo Switch App and set up NookLink
Download the Nintendo Switch App onto your real-life phone -- it’s free, and it also has plenty of other handy features for the game. Like allowing you to chat with your friends using your phone’s keyboard instead of the slog of typing it out with JoyCons. It’s real nice.

When you go open the New Horizons-specific features for the first time, you’ll be told to set up NookLink so that your game and your phone recognize each other. Just do this by pressing the [-] button on the opening screen of New Horizons, which takes you to the settings menu.

2) Scan a QR Code from online
Now, go back into the Nintendo Switch App, open that New Horizons-specific widget, and go to “Designs.” You’ll be invited to scan a QR code. Simply point your phone at your monitor!

3) Go to your in-game NookPhone
Lastly, head to the Custom Designs app on your NookPhone. Select an empty slot, and press the [+] button to download the design you just uploaded to NookLink.

Option 2: Able Sisters
Of course, you can share the intricate clothing designs you’ve made right in New Horizons, too -- once you've unlocked the Able Sisters' tailor shop.

1) Make sure you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership
Yes, unfortunately, to use this feature, you’ll need a membership for Nintendo Switch Online. Fortunately, this is the same membership that allows you to visit your friends’ islands. It’s also four bucks a month -- could be worse, no?

2) Get the Able Sisters’ shop
Tortuously, to share designs, you’ll have to wait until your town gets the Able Sisters’ tailor shop. Make sure to buy as much as you can from Mable when she comes to your plaza to sell her wares in order to hurry along the process!

3) Head to the Custom Designs Portal at the back of the Able Sisters
The kiosk at the back right of the Able Sisters will have everything you need to both share your own designs and snag designs from others! When searching for someone else’s design, all you have to do is input their code. You have the option to search for the code for the specific design you want, or look up the designer’s code to see everything they’ve made and have a fashion free-for-all!

Now that you know how to upload designs, you’re probably itching to go out into the wide world of the internet and hunt for new fashion fodder. To help with your search, a number of fan-run databases have popped up to help share designs. Check out Nookpedia or Custom Crossing! Or you can simply look for #AnimalCrossingDesigns on Twitter, Instagram, etc. Or upload anything you please to AC Patterns -- because we really can’t overstate how magical this is.

There are two types of custom designs: Normal patterns and Pro Designs (which you have to unlock). Normal patterns have a variety of uses -- you can put them on the ground, hang them up in your house, use them as face paint, or plaster them as wallpaper. Or, of course, make a simple shirt with them. Pro Designs are crafted for a specific kind of clothing. As such, you can go absolutely crazy with detailing to make an impressively stylish outfit. Here are a few of each to get you started on your custom designs journey.

Bold And Brash
Any self-respecting SpongeBob fan will surely remember “Bold and Brash,” one of Squidward’s paintings mocked by the art collector in the episode “Artist Unknown.” Does it truly “belong in the trash?” Thanks to Twitter user @felizceliase -- and the magical editing website AC Patterns -- now you can decide.

Stone Paths
Terraforming and the ability to make paths in our towns comes tragically late in the game. For the impatient, @Kanda_Em has made these useful, quaint stone paths.

Dandelions
Sure, there are plenty of weeds to pluck on your island, but what about the simple beauty of the dandelion or clover? Thanks to @mothcoffee, you can sprinkle your town with them.

Eyebrows
One of the most popular face paint items among players has actually been eyebrows. The website MyPotatoGames did a good job of gathering a few options.

Pancake Hat
Twitter user @trillvalentine has created quite a few adorable outfits. But perhaps the icing on the cake -- or rather, the syrup on the pancake -- is this ridiculously cute pancake hat.

Sky & Sea Collection
For those who love subtle detail, designer @Aleikats made these adorable outfits inspired by the sky and sea. That coral design on the hat is especially excellent.

Maruchan Ramen Robe
Some of us may be finding ourselves with a few more packets of Maruchan instant ramen around the house than usual, and @0skmey really made the most of that inspiration.

Fancy Dresses
Everyone wants to look their best while strolling around their town. With @blueberylpie’s staggeringly intricate outfits (that rose gingham hat!), it’s incredibly easy.

Freaky Fish Sweater
What’s with this subtly freaky fish? Not sure, but you want this code, don’t you?

Celestial sweater
@plaguinng is an actual pixel artist -- and so is in a unique position to make some crazy stuff. Check out this sweet celestial sweater and gothic-feeling purple dress.

Pikachu Jacket
Fans of Pokemon Yellow -- or just Pokemon in general -- this one’s for you! @TAHK0 has done every aspiring Pokemon master a favor by making a stylish and endlessly charming retro-feeling Pikachu jacket.

Pastel Shirt
If you’re looking for a shirt that is both simple yet flashy at the same time, look no further than @malibarry’s pastel shirt.
