Want to double your bedroom storage? These clever and creative ideas will make you rethink the space above your bed.

Storage units fitted above the bed were a popular trend back in the 1970s and ’80s and, although they were great for making the most of unused wall space, these cupboards never looked particularly appealing. In fact, they often made bedrooms feel darker and more enclosed. But before you declare your distaste for the old-school ‘bed bridge’, take a look at these modern updates that offer more creative and appealing alternatives to the dated designs of the past.

1. Shoes, glorious shoes!
Didn’t think over-bed storage could be innovative and contemporary? Well, these stylish shoe cupboards behind the bed break all the rules. The bespoke cupboards are recessed into the wall so they don’t encroach on head room or light, while their vibrant colour adds a modern statement. Just beware of the doors when they are open…

2. Keep it bright
Old-fashioned ‘bed-bridges’ of the ’80s often made a bedroom feel busy and cluttered thanks to their dated designs and overt detailing. To avoid the room feeling closed in, stick to simple, white cupboards with clean lines and you’ll create a barely-there feel. Pop a darker throw on the bed for contrast and the cupboards will fade even further into the background. Tip: Choose handleless cupboards that push open for an even slicker look.

3. Design your own combination of units
Alternatively, you might want to draw attention to the cupboards and create a feature around your bed. Incorporating an open shelf into the design can provide a great spot for displaying personal pieces and bringing interest to a room. In this scheme, tall, slim cupboards make brilliant use of the space on either side of the bed, while a small bedside shelf also provides a handy spot for bedtime essentials.

Tip: By designing your own bespoke bed bridge, rather than buying off-the-shelf units, you can incorporate the exact cupboards for all your storage needs.

4. Use mirrors for effect
You might think that adding mirrors to the front of high wall units seems a little pointless. In fact, it’s a clever visual trick to help the room feel larger by reflecting the light and ceiling space. This is a super solution if you are concerned that the units might make your bedroom feel too enclosed.

5. Make an impact

Worried that a row of units above the bed may feel a little sterile and kitchen-like? Then what about incorporating a striking arch and a glamorous padded bedhead for an injection of style? You could also include sneaky cubby holes on either side of the bedhead for easy-to-reach bedtime storage. Clever ideas all round.

Similarly, the units in this guest room also include a recessed area for handy reading lights, and when the guest bed is folded away into the wall, the recessed cubby holes are neatly concealed for a streamlined finish. The warm, timber-clad cupboards have a distinctive retro vibe, but they remain fresh and contemporary thanks to the pale flooring and modern cane chair.

6. Consider nifty lighting
Kitchen upper cabinets are often fitted with down lights to brighten up workbenches, and similarly, over-bed units can be fitted with downlights to brighten up the bed. Not only is this great for reading, it provides atmospheric evening light if you don’t have space for freestanding lamps.

Contemporary Kids by Turner Pocock

7. Make a statement with open shelves
Recessed shelves built into the wall behind the bed will provide plenty of storage space for books as well as special treasures. Incorporate some clever lighting and the shelves will make a stunning focal point.

By Tuner Pocock

8. A winner in narrow rooms
When there’s no room for cupboards or wardrobes on the wall opposite the bed, the solution is often to place all the furniture along one wall. But rather than having individual freestanding pieces, opt for a built-in design so the bedroom has unity and cohesion. Here, two large wardrobes sit on either side of the bed and are connected by a bridge of open shelving, creating a harmonious look that’s neat and streamlined.

Transitional Kids by Deborah Wecselman Design, Inc

9. Turn it into useful cubby shelf storage
Over-bed storage doesn’t have to mean closed units, it can be open shelves too. Cubby shelf storage is an ideal solution in kids’ rooms that need some clutter-control, and if you don’t like the busy look, pop baskets into the cubbies for a neat finish. All of these images have been sourced from www.houzz.com.au.

On our last trip we tried out the ole shelf over the bed with baskets mod so many other podders have done. Cost was about $110.00. It offers plenty of room for 4 real nice sized baskets to hold clothes and access is very user friendly. I will say that the mod is probably at least a 5 out of 10 for level of difficulty. Like many others, we found the perfect shelf at Lowes, the finish basically matches the bathroom door perfectly. The baskets were a little harder to find but we got lucky at Michael's with a 50% off sale. WARNING to people who do not normally buy baskets...prepare for sticker shock! Good baskets are expensive! No more digging in duffles for socks for us! YAY!

Is the shelf you found solid or not?  do you have a part number from Lowes?  How does one attach it to the walls?  I just got my rpod so if this has been discussed, sorry, or send me reference.

Thanks

This post has a little more information about the mod: 177 MODS

I used 3" L brackets. The shelf is part of a closet storage system, sorry...I don't know the part number. The trick was finding the right location for the shelf vs the type of baskets to be used.

I'm real happy with the way it looks and the functionality. It's like having the space equivalent of a small 4 drawer dresser.

Cliff: Outstanding! Hope you won't mind if I shamelessly copy your good idea! And Lowe's, BTW, has a decent selection of baskets. We're leaning toward wicker-styled plastic ones rather than the actual wicker.  I'm a little concerned that the real wicker might snag my "dainty unmentionables". LOL

And John in Idaho:  Here's a link to a Roth & Allen shelf at Lowe's that sure looks like Podster's.  Hope it helps.  The shelf is 6' long.  The width of our Pods is ~6'2". So, it looks like it could get some support from the window valance plus additional from the 3" L-brackets Podster mentioned.  I'm thinking some 1x4" cedar (or whatever) might make a good shim at each end.  Would mean a little less weight on the valances.  Anyway, I'm thinking out loud. Sorry.

Not a problem here, the baskets we purchased are lined on the inside. Smile

That's a relief! You can't imagine what wicker splinters in your shorts will do.

I meant to ask: Did you position the shelf so that it's up against the sloped wall? Or would that rob too much shelf space? But .. being up against the wall would allow a couple of the wall clips - or a rail - to be used for mid-span support.  What to do, what to do??

The baskets fit perfectly onto the width of the shelf, sitting inside the given channel to keep them from shifting. The shelf has to be forward of the rear roof to allow for clearance of the back of the baskets.

I positioned the shelf just far enough back to allow the baskets to clear the sloping roof. Admittedly, it's light duty but should be fine. If it fails, I will extend the length of the self to the full 74" (well 73.5") and install a rail for it to sit on. We travel with the baskets loaded sitting on the bed and when we camp, we place them on the shelf.

I found the wicker baskets at Lowe's to be very "sheddy" and ruled them out because I didn't want to load the bed with sticky itchy wicker wickets.

Hello Podster,

I have the 176 and that looks like the same amount of room over the bed/dining in mine. Question: I purchased that shelf and am trying to decide how far back to place it. Trying to decide whether to leave it open above your head while watching tv or not? How many inches from the slope of the wall did you leave? Thanks so much.

24 Super Cool Bedroom Storage Ideas That You Probably Never Considered

20 Shelves Above the Bed the Internet Says Are a GOOD Thing

Once you've figured out the most zen placement for your bed, you get to decide how to decorate the space above your bed. You could hang a gallery wall, maybe paint a mural… or you could opt for floating shelves. Not only are shelves above the bed a game changer for small spaces, but they give you storage without feeling cluttered and add a great dose of visual interest, with or without a headboard. Since some shelves above bed are basically what your bedroom's missing, we've rounded up 20 clever and unexpected examples to help you complete your sanctuary in style. You'll be taking the ultimate bedroom #shelfie in no time.

From minimalistic to cozy aesthetic, we have floating shelf above bed ideas for all

1. Mod Gallery Wall: If you love the idea of stacked art, but you're looking for a creative take on the gallery wall, fill that entire shelf with a collection of artwork that will bring your room to life. Choose art pieces of similar colors and shapes to keep the bedroom feeling calm and restful. (via Zara Home)

2. Light and Bright: Go a little boho and bring texture to your overhead space with framed art, an indoor plant and a strand of string lights. A floating shelf full of treasured knick knacks creates a dramatic focal point that draws you right in. (via Apartment Therapy)

3. Moody Glam: Keep things classic and simple with a white floating shelf and several art pieces. Mount the shelf right above your headboard (high enough you don’t bang your head) to add extra height and drama to your bedroom. (via Front + Main)

4. Stacks of Shelves: Narrow bedrooms can make it hard to hang artwork, and small spaces can limit your options even more. Instead of cramming more pieces into your space, bring interest to the wall behind your bed with multiple shelves that give you space for your library, picture frames and decor. (via Style Me Pretty)

5. Indoor Garden: This shelf takes indoor gardening to new heights. Adding several house plants above your bed will give your space a fresh and playful feel, especially if you switch things up with long, hanging tendrils and tall, perky plants.

6. All Gray Everything: The minimal black frames on this floating shelf give this bedroom a Scandi-Chic vibe. Mix up textures to add visual interest. (via Solebich)

7. Vintage Couture: If you can’t stand nightstand clutter, try moving your lamp, jewelry boxes and photo frames to a shelf above your bed. This is a great hack if you don’t have space for a bedside table or if you’re living the #smallspace life. (via Nuevo Estilo)

8. Minimalist Style: Don’t feel like you have to fill up the whole shelf. A shelf with one or two main pieces of decor makes just as much of a statement as one brimming with kitschy pieces. (via Design Sponge)

9. Industrial Vibes: Whether you’re a globetrotter who hauled treasures from an exotic location or you just love an eclectic look, an industrial pipe shelving piece can be a great replacement for the more traditional nightstand. Plus, a shelf mounted at almost ceiling height ensures you’ll never bruise your head in the a.m. (via Christine Choi Photography / Style Me Pretty)

10. Dusty Pink: Add a little zen to your room with a stylish mounted wood box shelf. The subtle design will bring visual interest without overwhelming a small room and create an out-of-the-ordinary focal point that’s perfect for showcasing one or two pieces. (via The Design Files)

What do you prefer? A bookshelf above the bed or just a place with some plants?

11. Mini Hanging Shelf: Craft yourself the perfect shelfie with a mini floating shelf, a couple potted plants and a framed photo. Earth tones gives this tiny shelf an organic and serene feel, and its #plantlover look is totally on trend. (via Sara Landstedt)

12. Monochromatic Bliss: Elevate a muted color scheme with clean lines, cozy textures and a wooden accent or two. Instead of just one long floating shelf, take a tip from this pretty bedroom and mix things up with two different shelves of two different heights and sizes.

13. Bohemian Charm: Fill a neutral-based bedroom with an array of organic elements and cozy textures to create a truly welcoming space. A vibrant mix of woven wall hangings, greenery and embroidered pillows gives this light-filled bedroom tons of personality. (via Design Sponge)

14. Less Is More: Photos look charming sitting on a shelf, but you can take it a step further with a few prints hanging below the shelf too. Stick to clean edges and beach-inspired prints to recreate this modern, geometric look.

15. Breath of Fresh Air: Take your organization game to a whole new level by using up the space over your bed with multiple shelves. Mix up the length of the shelves with wall art and mounted lamps to keep your room from looking too much like a closet. (via Main Street Stockholm)

16. Black and White Beauty: Give your bedroom an inviting, cozy aesthetic with mounted, movable lamps under a shelf. You could even add letter cubes or a light box to spell out a sweet message to your S.O. (via Bettina Holst)

17. Outside the Box: One long floating shelf too “done” for you? Think outside the norm and go for a circular hanging shelf instead. It might be just the decorative accent that brings your whole room together.

18. Surfer Cool: This light and bright room is Cali-cool at its finest. Plain white shelves almost blend right into the wall, leaving you with a delightfully simple, modern bedroom. (via Hunting for George)

19. Pastel Perfection: Pair a soft pastel color scheme with warm wooden accents and a touch of gold metallic accents. Mix up elegant features like gold picture frames, geometric throw pillows and an ombre blanket to turn your bedroom into a stylish space. (via Micasa)

20. Bookworm Heaven: No room for bookshelves? No problemo. Create the home library of your dreams by building up the area above your bed with multiple floating shelves. (via Planete Deco)
