Shadow priest action bar

Shadow priest action bar DEFAULT

Going from Holy PvP (battleground) to Shadow Priest PvE

As Holy, I used to group my buttons on my action bar by function, such as healing on top, damage on the bottom, buffs on the right.   There really isn&#;t a rotation when healing PvP at least in battlegrounds.

When I changed to my Shadow PvE spec I grappled with my failing DPS and would whine “but I’m working my ass off and only doing 10% damage of the group! My gear seems ok…”  I knew a lot of it was my PvP gear and knew I needed to get PvE stuff even if the base stats were lower than my &#; PvP gear.  Because the sub stats matter! Such as Hit and Haste.  Besides my PvP stuff was all Mooncloth (for healing) and gemmed all wrong for PvE.

There is a basic Shadow Priest guide at Noxxic that points to the ideal Talents and Stat priorities.  It&#;s not wordy and just gives you a bullet list of how things work best.  This is where I first researched about stat priorities, ideal talent points, and the new to me idea of &#;spell rotation and priorities.&#;

I am a visual person and the Wowhead Transmorg visual guide helped me very much with getting started on Heroics and building a gear set.  Specifically, the &#;Whisperwind Regalia&#; set looked very good to me, and it was an effective way for me to have a goal, much like a quest.

But about that Action Bar&#;

Some of my issues were non-optimal gear since I had mixed PvP and PvE drops, and in my case, a lot it was how I was using the Action Bar and here’s the before, below.  Vampiric Touch is far off out of the hotspot of the Bar, and so is Shadow Fiend.  Changing your action bar is FREE to do, all it costs is your time and opening your mind to new ways, and a willingness to practice the new set up.

I found out Silence (and Psychic Horror) isn’t really something used too much in dungeons, but since I mainly PvP I did not know that until reading up what a good Shadow Priest PvE Talent spec should be.

I reworked my Action Bar to this, a work in progress:

I removed the Silence talent and used the points elsewhere.

I decided since I lead my rotation with VampiricTouch to put that in a reachable spot, followed by Devouring Plague.  Both of those need to be refreshed often.  Shadow Word Pain is refreshed by Mind Flay, I put it in the middle since that is where it falls in my opening rotation but really it isn&#;t touched again until the next mob.  Shadow Word Death is a finishing move, and now as I look at it, I think perhaps it should be placed near Mind Flay since I usually run out of time before I can use it (the group kills off the mob quickly) rather than at the end of the strip.

In the middle I put the ohshit Divine Hymn closer in.  After off-healing a few heroics I found it really seems to work well in that kind of situation.  I almost always have Inner Will up as it helps conserve mana, but if things get hairy I will pop Inner Fire.

I’ve never used Mind Control so decided to put it in a usable place and practice on mobs.  I’m too nervous to use in a dungeon for now. I kept Smite and Holy Fire for some reason in the front, I suppose they are like comforts even though I never use them and haven’t had the heart to move them off to the side yet.  They will probably be replaced by a trinket or something more immediately useful to Shadow.

Do I really need a wand in this hot spot area? Probably not&#; but I&#;ve had it since a lowbie, it&#;s like a security blanket.

I moved Dispersion alongside Hymn of Hope, mana generators.

Also, I put the shadow fiend where I would be sure to pay attention to it and use it more since it is great DPS addition.

I will probably move mana burn (unused in dungeons/PvE for the most part) and put a trinket there or potion, instead.  I think Lifeblood might be a good choice for the haste.

Changing the buttons around I went from % contribution in the group, to % within the course of the day that I made the change and had also gained a few new Hour of Twilight pieces.

It&#;s all in the mind &#; My Issue:

  • I think I was attached to my healing set up and did not want to change my DPS set up too radically from my healing one.  Not because I’m lazy, but because it is what is comfortable and I am used to.
  • Change is hard (for me)
  • I am used to the narrow selection of gear with PvP, it is pretty easy to know what gear to get and how to get it since it is almost all acquired from a Vendor.  Talent choices tend to work themselves out naturally as one plays and figures out playstyle.
  • I did not ever put much research in what to spec, what gear to pick, or study anything.
  • Moving unused spells off to a different area scared me: What if I needed it?!  But the truth is, I don&#;t need it &#; they aren&#;t used!  They are fine off to the side.

Now the two are very different setups from each other, which is probably the proper way to do it, and after so many years of playing WoW I am a little bemused that I am just now changing things around.  I supposed being tired of failing DPS helped motivate me to change.

What Changed in Shadowlands?

Shadow has received an extensive list of changes in Shadowlands.

Here is a quick list of major changes Shadow has received:

  • Voidform is now a 90 second cooldown and we no longer use the voidform cycle
  • Insanity has been reworked into a spender resource, with Devouring Plague being the baseline spender
  • Power Infusion has returned as a base ability
  • Our Mastery has changed to increase our damage by X% per DoT on the target
  • We have a new passive ability, Dark Thoughts, which is a proc that lets us cast Mind Blast during Flay/Sear
  • Shadow Apparitions has received a fairly major design change

For a more detailed list of new changes, click below:

Changes
  • Desperate Prayer has been returned to Shadow, allowing us to have an on-demand instant heal that does not share a cooldown with potions or stones.
  • Mastery has been changed to provide an additive % increase to damage for every DoT you have on a target. This won't fundamentally change your rotation, but might be gameable on fights with increased damage taken phases.
  • Shadow Word: Death has returned as a base ability. Be careful though, it damages you back!
  • Voidform has been completely overhauled. You cast Void Eruption to activate it, unleashing an AoE centered on your target. You then gain a few benefits, outlined in more detail in the Voidform section.
  • Dark Thoughts is a new passive that gives your Flay and Sear a 3% chance per DoT on each tick to give you an instant Blast that can be cast during Flay and Sear.
  • Devouring Plague has returned and is our primary spender of Insanity.
  • Shadowy Apparitions are no longer tied to crit chance. Now, whenever you cast Blast, Bolt, or Plague, a spirit will travel to every target with your Vampiric Touch. If the trigger spell crits, you will spawn two spirits instead of one.
  • There are various new talents that you can explore at your leisure. The most important one to note is Searing Nightmare. This is an AoE insanity spender that can only be cast while using Mind Sear. Casting it applies Pain to all targets hit and if the target already has Pain, it deals double damage.

Talents

Shadow actually has some choice in talents! You will find the various combinations below, as well as some basic explanations for each.

Single Target

For single target fights, the setup is rather simple. You can use Misery instead of ToF if you'd like with a minimal loss in DPS.

Multi Target

Once secondary targets are involved, things get tricky.

For the level 15 row, DnM picks up when you can reliably snipe adds with it. For longer lived targets, Fortress will likely still be the best choice.

If the adds are shortlived, you may find ToF outperforms Misery.

For the level 40 row, this will depend on if the targets are spread out or stacked. For spread targets, take AS. For stacked targets, take Crash.

For the level 45 row, both Bender and Torrent are strong contenders. The same goes for Hungering and Surrender in the level 50 row. You will need to play around with the combinations on a fight to figure out what works best in that scenario.

Quick note for the level 50 row: AM is stronger at low crit levels and StM can be strong depending on how it could be used in the fight. HV is the go-to pick once you have a decent crit setup though.

Dungeons

For the level 45 tier, you can use either Mindbender or Void Torrent. Bender is more oriented to overall trash damage while Torrent is better suited towards single target damage.

For the level 50 tier, the same mention as in multi-target applies. AM sees a lot of strength at low gear levels, especially if you are able to spam Nightmare in Voidform. Remember that StM will kill you if the creature you cast it on doesn't die in time!

Rotation/Opener

Our rotation has simplified heavily in this expansion, thanks to the removal of the Voidform cycle. Our basic rotations can be found below:

Raids/Bosses

Outside of Voidform

  1. Use all of your cooldowns when they come up: Fiend/Bender, Power Infusion, Voidform, etc.
  2. Cast Devouring Plague to prevent overcapping Insanity
  3. Keep up Pain and Touch
  4. Use Shadow Word: Death if the target is under 20% health
  5. Cast Blast ideally with all three DoTs up
  6. Use Dark Thoughts procs ONLY during Flay/Sear
  7. Cast Flay or Sear as filler

Inside Voidform

  1. Use Void Eruption to enter Voidform
  2. Cast Bolt
  3. Cast Devouring Plague, never letting your insanity cap
  4. Use Shadow Word: Death if the target is under 20% health
  5. Cast Blast
  6. Cast Sear or Flay as filler

Dungeons with Misery

  1. Use cooldowns appropriately for the dungeon
  2. Cast Devouring Plague to prevent overcapping Insanity
  3. Use Misery to keep up both Pain and VT on as many targets as possible
  4. Use Shadowfiend
  5. Cast Devouring Plague
  6. Use Shadow Word: Death if the target is under 20% health
  7. Cast Blast. If more than 4 targets, only cast with Dark Thoughts
  8. Cast Sear or Flay

Dungeons with Searing

Remember to be using cooldowns as appropriate for the dungeon. The way we handle the rotation is dependent on how many targets there are.

For targets

  1. Still use Devouring Plague to spend insanity and continue your generic rotation

For 3 targets

  1. Cast Searing Nightmare outside of Voidform
  2. Cast Devouring Plague in Voidform
  3. Maintain generic rotation

For 4 or more targets

  1. Only spend insanity on Searing Nightmare
  2. Only cast Blast with DT procs
  3. If using Hungering Void, use Bolt unless there are more than 6 targets
  4. If there are less than 7 targets, cast Touch only when you do not have the insanity for Searing and you have no DT procs

Now let's look at what our openers would be:

Raids/Bosses

  1. Precast Touch
  2. Cast Shadow Crash
  3. Cast Pain
  4. Cast Void Torrent
  5. Cast Blast
  6. Cast Fiend
  7. Cast Plague
  8. Cast PI
  9. Cast Void Eruption
  10. Cast Bolt

Dungeons

  1. Cast Touch as the tank is pulling mobs
  2. Cast Blast
  3. Cast Fiend
  4. Cast PI
  5. Cast Void Eruption

Let's take note of a few things now.

Devouring Plague: DP is our only baseline spender for Insanity.

It is important to note that our mastery if not fully active unless we are in Voidform or if we have all three DoTs on target. Because of this, you are going to want to try to maintain as high an uptime of DP as possible. Pay attention to the debuff timer and do your best to not overlap DPs too much.

However, this spell has a built in rollover function. This means that if you cast DP on a target already afflicted by the DoT, all the damage from the first DP will carry over into the new one. Because of this, don't worry if you have to cast DP on a target that already has the debuff.

Do make note though, you should pay attention to how fast the target is dying. You don't want to lose damage!

AoE: Shadow's aoe kit has a few factors to consider. First, Sear only replaces Flay when you have three or more stacked targets. This is both because of damage and Dark Thoughts procs.

DoTs: Assuming that the mob is going to live for certain periods of time, it is worth it to place DoTs up. If the mob lives for at least five seconds, cast Pain. If it lives at least seven seconds, cast VT. The ideal time to cast DoTs is when it would be replacing Flay, but you can substitute Blast if the mob will live longer. Make sure to cast Bolt on cd though!

Voidform

Our primary cooldown does deserve a bit of explanation on its own. When Voidform is activated, you will immediately gain three benefits:

  • Your Void Eruption spell will transform into Void Bolt
  • You will reset your Mind Blast and also gain a second charge of Blast
  • You will cap out your mastery value against all targets for the duration of Voidform

Now what does all of this mean?

Void Bolt is simply a spell that you want to be casting every third global in Voidform. This is the only time that you have access to the spell, so make sure you are pressing that button on cooldown!

Blast having a second charge is mostly a quality of life change since we can have so much happening during Voidform. Just make sure you aren't letting both stacks sit unused!

Because our mastery caps out, this means that every target will take maximum damage from your abilities, regardless of whether or not they have DoTs. This means that Voidform can be activated and you can target swap without any repurcussion or setup to do maximum damage.

Stats

Please, please go and use simcraft to help you figure out what you want for your character. To do this easily, go to Raidbots and run the sims for your character.

Our generic stat priority is as follows:

Int > Haste > Mastery > Crit > Vers

Make sure to sim your gear to see your relationship between mastery and crit. They are very close to one another.

An important thing to remember is that secondary stats have been nerfed going into Shadowlands. Because of this, secondary stats reach soft caps at 30% of their value. This does not mean that stats are useless after that value, simply that they begin diminishing in value.

There is one small caveat to this statement: mastery. For mastery, the soft cap is actually 19%.

Covenants

Covenants are Blizzard's new system for this expansion. The absolute truth here is that all covenants are extremely close in value. Because of this, I truly suggest that you look at the covenants and decide if there is one that sounds more fun for you based on playstyle, performance across other specs, or even aesthetics.

Now let's get into the covenants!

Kyrian

When taking the Kyrian covenant, you receive Boon of the Ascended ability. Wtih this ability, your Mind Flay gets replaced and we gain another AoE button.

On ST fights, you are simply going to activate this during Voidform and replacing all of your Flay casts. There is nothing that needs to be done with Nova on ST fights.

Once a second target is brought in, you can begin to use Nova as your filler button during Voidform.

In all honesty, this ability is fairly awkward for Shadow and it will take some time to adjust.

Venthyr

When taking the Venthy covenant, you receive Mindgames.

This is actually a very simple thing, just use the spell either in voidform or with all three DoTs on the target.

Night Fae

When taking the Night Fae covenant, you receive Fae Guardians.

For this covenant, simply cast Guardians right before you enter Voidform.

Now it is important to note that this is going to make your cooldowns do some weird things. The rule of thumb is that you are always going to be using Voidform on cooldown. Your second PI in a fight is going to be slightly delayed for Voidform. You'll adjust to this timing as you play around with it more.

Necrolord

When taking the Necrolord covenant, you receive Unholy Nova.

Just use this ability on cooldown, ideally with all three DoTs on the target.

Soulbinds

For soulbinds, you are going to want to go down paths that let you take two offensive options: Dissonant Echoes and Haunting Apparitions.

For more involved details, you can look at our github page located in the section below. The github shows a path for both what is best on launch and what is best once we have had time to invest.

Gear

For trinkets and legendaries, look no further than our lovely github page located here. The shadow team puts a lot of work into this, so make sure to give them the credit they deserve!

Remember, if you are ever doubting something, just make sure to use Simcraft to help answer your questions!

Racials

"Follow your heart" – Hygeia,

Racials are still close in SL, though we are starting to see a tiny edge case from best to worst. That being said, the difference is only a few %, so play the race that you want or focus on other things, such as Rocket Jump, Arcane Torrent, or Will to Survive.

Consumables/Enchants

Remember that your phanthom fire potion only gets max use if the oil is applied!

Shadow Priest Rotational Primer

The Shadow Priest rotation revolves around a modern version of a builder/spender style of play that mixes in damage over time effects as well. You use abilities that generate Insanity and then spend that Insanity primarily on Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague. The spec is now more of a cooldown-based spec rather than a long ramping damage spec, after the rework turning Voidform IconVoidform into a minute cooldown, second duration cooldown.

If you are more of a visual learner, you can watch the video guide version of this guide instead. I would suggest reading this side by side during the video to absorb the information the best.

Easy Mode

If the rotations below seems overwhelming to you, you might benefit from visiting our Easy Mode page which outlines a close-to-optimal rotation in simpler terms.

Shadow Priest PvP Guide

If you are completely new to Shadow and need more information on the abilities available to you, you can check out our Spell Summary page.

Shadow Priest Spell Summary Page

Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt is the largest change to your playstyle once you enter Voidform IconVoidform. When Void Bolt strikes a target (after a short travel time) it adds 3 seconds to the duration of Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch on your main target as well as nearby targets. Though this helps delay having to refresh our DoTs, you will still have to manually apply them, especially out of Voidform.

Shadowform

Shadowform IconShadowform is an aura that increases your spell damage done by 10%. You should always have Shadowform active (you only need to activate it once, and it will remain active until you die; entering Voidform IconVoidform will temporarily deactivate it but then automatically reactivate it when you exit Voidform).

Covenant Switch

Use the button below to select your Covenant to see how that changes the rotation:

2.

Single-Target Rotation for Shadow Priest

The single-target rotation relies on the following priority system of abilities, depending on which phase you are in.

  1. Cast Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption to enter Voidform IconVoidform whenever you get at least 40 Insanity. This should be used on cooldown, even without Power Infusion IconPower Infusion. Consider saving for 10s or so if adds are coming. Make sure Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend and Mind Blast IconMind Blast are on cooldown before entering Voidform.
  2. Cast Power Infusion IconPower Infusion on cooldown. Hold if Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption will be coming off cooldown in 10s or less.
  3. Cast Boon of the Ascended IconBoon of the Ascended in Voidform IconVoidform (see opener for exact sequence).
  4. Cast Unholy Nova IconUnholy Nova if adds are not coming soon and you have Power Infusion IconPower Infusion active or it is on cooldown.
  5. Cast Fae Guardians IconFae Guardians right before starting your Voidform IconVoidform.
  6. Cast Mindgames IconMindgames if you have all 3 DoTs active OR you are in Voidform IconVoidform.
  7. Use the rest of your cooldowns to line them up, this includes Covenant spells and trinkets.
  8. Use Damnation IconDamnation to easily apply DoTs before applying manually.
  9. Apply and maintain Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch on your target, only refreshing them when they are about to fall off. If using Misery IconMisery only refresh with Vampiric Touch. Make sure you are refreshing Vampiric Touch periodically to get the Unfurling Darkness IconUnfurling Darkness benefit.
  10. Cast Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague when you have at least 50 Insanity. There is no optimal refresh point like traditional DoTs, you just want to make sure you cast this enough to get maximum uptime for the Mastery benefit AND you will not cap on your Insanity resource. Remember that refreshing Devouring Plague does NOT cause you to lose any damage. The damage left over in the old DoT gets carried over to the new one.
  11. Cast Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt on cooldown in Voidform IconVoidform as long as you will not cap on Insanity (below 85). Use this as you get a spare global out of Voidform with a Dissonant Echoes IconDissonant Echoes proc.
  12. Cast Shadow Word: Death IconShadow Word: Death on cooldown when the mobs are below 20% HP. When using Shadowflame Prism IconShadowflame Prism use this on cooldown regardless of health percentage while Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend or Mindbender IconMindbender is active.
  13. Use Surrender to Madness IconSurrender to Madness if the target will die within 25s and you currently are not in Voidform IconVoidform.
  14. Use Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend/Mindbender IconMindbender whenever available, preferably when you have as much Haste as possible, or right before you enter Voidform IconVoidform. Timing this with Voidform is critical when using Shadowflame Prism IconShadowflame Prism.
  15. Cast Void Torrent IconVoid Torrent when you have both Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch active and you are not in Voidform IconVoidform. To optimize DPS you can use this at the VERY END of Voidform when you will not get another cast of Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt in.
  16. Cast Shadow Crash IconShadow Crash on cooldown, unless adds are coming in less than 10 seconds.
  17. Cast Mind Flay IconMind Flay in order to consume a Dark Thoughts IconDark Thoughts proc with Mind Blast IconMind Blast while channeling Mind Flay. If you have to you can also use this proc to help with movement. Dump your one charge of this spell BEFORE going into Voidform IconVoidform, since the cooldown gets reset.
  18. Cast Mind Blast IconMind Blast on cooldown. Note: you do not need to use both charges at the same time when in Voidform, just make sure to not stay at 2 charges if possible.
  19. Consume your Unfurling Darkness IconUnfurling Darkness procs to make sure you do not lose the buff if you have this active/talented. Do not go out of your way to proc this every 15 seconds, see below for more detail.
  20. Cast Mind Flay IconMind Flay as a filler when all of the above spells can not be cast or do not have to be cast, interrupting it whenever a higher priority spell becomes available.
  21. Cast Shadow Word: Death IconShadow Word: Death when on the move, or spam Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain if Shadow Word: Death is on cooldown and you have to move.

As a Night Fae, make sure and continue to use Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption on cooldown, even with the decrease. The only thing you will need to sync up is certain Power Infusion IconPower Infusion casts by holding for just a few seconds to fix your cooldown line-ups around your 2nd cast of Power Infusion.

As a Necrolord, with Pallid Command IconPallid Command on single-target you should sync up casts of Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption and Power Infusion IconPower Infusion together for maximum benefit.

3.

Shadow Priest Opening Rotation

Shadow has no complex opener as it does not rely on cooldowns to do damage. Below you will find the basic opener which mostly follows the priority as listed above, with the exception of pre-casting Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch instead of Mind Blast IconMind Blast.

Note: if using Shadowflame Prism IconShadowflame Prism see the second opener below.

  1. As a Blood Elf you can use Arcane Torrent IconArcane Torrent before pulling, do not use this during your rotation after this.
  2. Pre-cast Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch.
  3. Apply Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain.
  4. Use any on-use trinkets like Empyreal Ordnance IconEmpyreal Ordnance that have some ramp time to line up.
  5. Cast Void Torrent IconVoid Torrent.
  6. Optional: Cast Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague if above ~85 Insanity. If using Talbadar's Stratagem IconTalbadar's Stratagem you should aim to do this to cast the one Mind Blast IconMind Blast before Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption regardless of current Insanity.
  7. Cast Shadow Crash IconShadow Crash.
  8. Cast Mind Blast IconMind Blast if fighting 1 or 2 targets, or if you still need more Insanity. When using Talbadar's Stratagem IconTalbadar's Stratagem make sure to get this off after your Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague before you enter Voidform IconVoidform. This will ensure you benefit from the cooldown reset.
  9. Fill with Mind Flay IconMind Flay until you reach about 40 Insanity (if at or above 40 skip this).
  10. Cast Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend/Mindbender IconMindbender right before entering Voidform IconVoidform with Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption.
  11. If using Shadowflame Prism IconShadowflame Prism you should cast Shadow Word: Death IconShadow Word: Death and Mind Blast IconMind Blast after Mindbender IconMindbender but before Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption; see detailed opener below.
  12. Cast Fae Guardians IconFae Guardians right before entering Voidform IconVoidform.
  13. Cast Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption when you have at least 40 Insanity.
  14. Cast Power Infusion IconPower Infusion as soon as you finish the Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption cast.
  15. Use your first potion at this point if this is where you are using Bloodlust IconBloodlust.
  16. Cast Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt.
  17. Use any racial abilities here that give stats.
  18. Use your on-use trinket if it gives instant stats/has no ramp.
  19. Cast Mindgames IconMindgames.
  20. Cast Unholy Nova IconUnholy Nova.
  21. Cast Boon of the Ascended IconBoon of the Ascended.
  22. Cast Ascended Blast IconAscended Blast if Boon of the Ascended IconBoon of the Ascended is active. Use this every other spell for the rest of Voidform IconVoidform.
  23. Cast Ascended Nova IconAscended Nova if Boon of the Ascended IconBoon of the Ascended is active and you are fighting 2 or more targets.
  24. Apply Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague if you have enough Insanity.
  25. Continue the regular single-target rotation/priority list.

When using Hungering Void IconHungering Void getting that first Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt off in Voidform IconVoidform on the opener is essential to buff that first Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague. You typically always want to get Insanity before casting Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption, that way a single Void Bolt is enough Insanity to get to that first Devouring Plague. Generally speaking delaying until 50 Insanity is not worth the extra time, especially with Bloodlust IconBloodlust/Heroism IconHeroism running.

Depending on your talent setups, you might find yourself getting Insanity capped in the opener, especially with Void Torrent IconVoid Torrent. If this happens, depending on your talent selections, it is better to pop a single Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague before going into your Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption cast to make sure you do not waste Insanity.

Shadowflame Prism Opener

The following opener is specific to using Shadowflame Prism IconShadowflame Prism. For the sake of this opener we are assuming you are also using Mindbender IconMindbender. The important part of this opener change is trying to get as many Shadow Word: Death IconShadow Word: Death and Mind Blast IconMind Blasts as possible inside the Mindbender window. To do this you use your first Shadow Word: Death immediately following Mindbender and then get a quick Mind Blast in before the cooldown is reset for Voidform IconVoidform. In order to consistently achieve this as a Night Fae you MUST cast Fae Guardians IconFae Guardians before the Mindbender, otherwise that one lost Global Cooldown will almost always cause you to miss an extra Shadow Word: Death or Mind Blast.

  1. As a Blood Elf you can use Arcane Torrent IconArcane Torrent before pulling; do not use this during your rotation afterward.
  5. Cast Shadow Crash IconShadow Crash.
  6. Cast Fae Guardians IconFae Guardians.
  7. Cast Mindbender IconMindbender.
  8. Cast Shadow Word: Death IconShadow Word: Death.
  9. Cast Mind Blast IconMind Blast.
  10. Cast Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption regardless of current Insanity.
  11. Cast Power Infusion IconPower Infusion as soon as you finish the Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption cast.
  12. Use your first potion at this point if this is where you are using Bloodlust IconBloodlust.
  13. Cast Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt.
  14. Use any racial abilities here that give stats.
  15. Use your on-use trinket if it gives instant stats or has no ramp.
  16. Cast Mindgames IconMindgames.
  17. Cast Unholy Nova IconUnholy Nova.
  18. Cast Boon of the Ascended IconBoon of the Ascended.
  19. Cast Ascended Blast IconAscended Blast if Boon of the Ascended IconBoon of the Ascended is active. Use this every other spell for the rest of Voidform IconVoidform.
  20. Cast Ascended Nova IconAscended Nova if Boon of the Ascended IconBoon of the Ascended is active and you are fighting 2 or more targets.
  21. Apply Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague if you have enough Insanity.
  22. Use Shadow Word: Death IconShadow Word: Death on cooldown for the duration of Mindbender IconMindbender.
  23. Prioritize Mind Blast IconMind Blast over everything except Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt if it has capped charges.
  24. Continue the regular single-target rotation/priority list.

Multiple Target Rotation for Shadow Priest

Shadow has quite a few decisions to make depending on how many targets you are fighting at any given time and how long they will live for. This rotation also changes heavily based on if you are using Misery IconMisery or Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare.

Use the following list as a cheat sheet for the important target swaps:

Target Priority

  1. Use Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend/Mindbender IconMindbender on cooldown.
  2. Cast Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption whenever available.
  7. Use Surrender to Madness IconSurrender to Madness if the target will die within 25s and you currently are not in Voidform IconVoidform.
  8. Cast Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt at high priority to keep up Hungering Void IconHungering Void if talented. Make sure you do not cap Insanity.
  9. Cast Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague to dump Insanity. Only keep this active on the one main target that way you can dump spells into a single target for maximum Mastery benefit. This is especially important with Talbadar's Stratagem IconTalbadar's Stratagem.
  10. Cast Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare to dump Insanity instead of Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague outside of Voidform IconVoidform.
  11. Cast Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt if you will not cap Insanity.
  13. Cast and maintain Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch on all targets if they live for 6 seconds or more (which applies Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain too if using Misery IconMisery). Make sure you are doing this periodically to get the Unfurling Darkness IconUnfurling Darkness benefit.
  14. Cast and maintain Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain on all targets. Disregard this step if you are using Misery IconMisery or Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare.
  15. Cast Shadow Crash IconShadow Crash if talented.
  16. Cast Void Torrent IconVoid Torrent when you have both Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch active and you are not in Voidform IconVoidform.
  17. Cast Mind Blast IconMind Blast.
  18. Use Mind Flay IconMind Flay to fill with 2 targets.
  19. Use Mind Sear IconMind Sear to fill with 3+ targets.

Target Priority

  1. Use Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend/Mindbender IconMindbender on cooldown.
  2. Cast Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption whenever available.
Stop casting this at 5 or more targets (6 with Hungering Void IconHungering Void). When using Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare you should weave this in after those casts: Mind Sear IconMind Sear -> Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare -> Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare -> Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt -> repeat.
  9. Cast Shadow Word: Death IconShadow Word: Death on cooldown when using Shadowflame Prism IconShadowflame Prism while Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend or Mindbender IconMindbender is active on up to 5 targets.
  10. Cast Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague to dump Insanity if you are not talented into Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare.
  11. Drop this at 5+ targets inside Voidform IconVoidform.
  12. Cast and maintain Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain on all targets. Disregard this step if you are using Misery IconMisery or Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare.
  13. Cast Shadow Crash IconShadow Crash if talented.
  14. Cast Mind Blast IconMind Blast while channeling Mind Sear IconMind Sear when you get Dark Thoughts IconDark Thoughts procs. Otherwise only cast while using Shadowflame Prism IconShadowflame Prism and Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend or Mindbender IconMindbender is active on up to 5 targets. When using Psychic Link IconPsychic Link you will keep this in your rotation regardless of target count as long as your Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch debuffs are applied.
  15. Cast Void Torrent IconVoid Torrent when you have both Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch active and you are not in Voidform IconVoidform. Past 4 targets you should only keep using this if talented into Twist of Fate IconTwist of Fate.
  16. Dump Insanity using Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare if talented, only cast this twice per Mind Sear IconMind Sear channel.
  17. Use Mind Sear IconMind Sear to fill. Recast after two Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare casts if talented.

6+ Target Priority

  1. Use Shadowfiend IconShadowfiend/Mindbender IconMindbender on cooldown.
  2. Cast Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption whenever available.
  7. Use Surrender to Madness IconSurrender to Madness if the target will die within 25s and you currently are not in Voidform IconVoidform.
  8. Cast Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt at high priority to keep up Hungering Void IconHungering Void if talented Make sure you do not cap Insanity. You should only cast it here if talented into Hungering Void IconHungering Void.
  9. Cast Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague to dump Insanity if you are not talented into Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare.
  10. If fighting 8 or more, you can safely stop casting Vampiric Touch if talented into Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare. See the below section for more detail.
  11. Cast and maintain Shadow Word: Pain IconShadow Word: Pain on all targets. Disregard this step if you are using Misery IconMisery or Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare.
  12. Cast Shadow Crash IconShadow Crash if talented.
  13. Cast Mind Blast IconMind Blast while channeling Mind Sear IconMind Sear when you get Dark Thoughts IconDark Thoughts procs. When using Psychic Link IconPsychic Link you will keep this in your rotation regardless of target count as long as your Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch debuffs are applied.
  14. Dump Insanity using Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare if talented, only cast this twice per Mind Sear IconMind Sear channel.
  15. Use Mind Sear IconMind Sear to fill. Recast after two Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare casts if talented.

For any amount of targets if you find yourself using Psychic Link IconPsychic Link be sure to keep Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch active on as many targets as possible before casting Mind Blast IconMind Blast. This talent is generally inferior to Auspicious Spirits IconAuspicious Spirits in almost every scenario, so use with caution.

The Multiple Target Rotation Further Explained

The goal when fighting multiple targets is to maintain your DoTs on as many targets as is reasonable in that specific situation, as well as hitting as many targets as possible with Shadow Crash IconShadow Crash and Void Eruption IconVoid Eruption. As long as targets will live long enough, it is advised to begin by applying your DoTs. The key to our multi-target rotation fundamentally requires you to use Misery IconMisery or Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare, otherwise you will spend far too much time DoTing enemies. This is an important trade-off because having DoT effects on targets means we get that mastery increase when not in Voidform IconVoidform, which is a lot of damage to pass up.

When using Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare you generally only care about Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch for the mastery benefit. Therefore around 5+ targets when talented you should stop casting Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch outside of Voidform IconVoidform when you cannot dump with Searing Nightmare.

When starting off the multi-target rotation your first instinct should be to spread your DoTs to as many targets as possible. When using Misery IconMisery this is as simple as casting Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch on every target that will live long enough. If there are more than enemies you should try and get into Voidform IconVoidform ASAP to start weaving in Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt, otherwise by the time you DoT every mob you will have to re-DoT them again. If you find yourself hitting this point often, that is a good indication that you probably should have taken Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare instead, as it easily spread SW:P to everything and you can just focus on that. If you can also maintain Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch on targets while weaving in Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare casts that is ideal, but stops being easy once you get to 6 targets.

While using Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare your general rotation will be to cast two Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare per Mind Sear IconMind Sear channel. Depending on if you are using Hungering Void IconHungering Void you will continue to weave in Void Bolt IconVoid Bolt casts (see above charts for cutoffs). Mixing these two you will cast Void Bolt after your two Searing Nightmare casts before starting your next Mind Sear channel.

Note that while using Searing Nightmare IconSearing Nightmare you should never be spending Insanity on Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague once you start fighting 3 or more stacked mobs when outside of Voidform IconVoidform. At 4 targets you drop Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague completely with this talented.

Important Notes for Shadow Priest

Fade Pulling

For dungeon pulls specifically you should always be pulling WITH the tank, not after. By getting proper setup as the tank is pulling by putting up Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch ASAP you will further increase your damage in the pack without suffering from loss in casting our Insanity spenders. This is only possible by using Fade IconFade as a threat drop as the tank is pulling to be able to DPS before threat is fully established. Mastering this is crucial to doing well in Mythic+.

Devouring Plague Refreshing

Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague is a DoT unlike anything the game has ever seen before, and as such it is important that you understand how it works at a high level in order to not misuse its unique effects.

When refreshing Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague you do not need to worry about doing this at a specific time, and that is because whenever you do refresh the spell it rolls over any damage remaining on the ticks and adds that in the form of a modifier to the new DoTs ticks. This effectively means that when you are in a case where you often hit or get close to Insanity (referred to as capping) you can freely refresh Devouring Plague and not lose any damage assuming the target lives for the full DoT duration. It is important to note that no part of this process is snapshotting state, but rather converting future damage ticks into a modifier value to the new ticks. Because of this period Intellect and Haste changes do not change how the rollover happens, it always works the same way regardless.

This mechanic is mostly passive, but can be used to your advantage if you want to burst down a specific target. By banking up Insanity you can use two Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague casts back to back and get a new DoT with much more powerful ticks in the same amount of time as a single Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague. Otherwise if your target will live you should always prioritize keeping the DoT active on the target for as long as possible for maximum benefit with our Mastery. While maximizing this make sure you are also NOT capping on Insanity. Juggling these two conditions will be how you master this spell.

For most types of content you should play completely normally, there is nothing to game with how this works unless you are trying to burst something down specifically. Just play normally and enjoy not losing damage when you would have otherwise capped Insanity.

If you want to see this change explained in video form I go over this in more detail in this video.

When to use Dark Thoughts Procs

Dark Thoughts IconDark Thoughts gives you passive procs of Mind Blast IconMind Blast as you channel Mind Flay IconMind Flay or Mind Sear IconMind Sear. Currently the proc rate is 3% per DoT when channeling Mind Flay (maximum of 9%) and % per DoT per target when channeling Mind Sear (maximum of % per target). Ideally you should always try to use theses charges quickly and while channeling one of your two filler spells, but do not be afraid to use one of these charges to help move as well.

Currently there is a bug that is allowing you to consume Dark Thoughts IconDark Thoughts while channeling Void Torrent IconVoid Torrent. If you are using this talent you should feel free to consume these procs during the channel as much as possible until the bug is fixed.

When to refresh Vampiric Touch with Unfurling Darkness

The Unfurling Darkness IconUnfurling Darkness can be a bit awkward to play around, but if you think of it less as having to cast an extra Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch and more like a cooldown you press every 15 seconds or so that should make more sense. Generally you want to try and use Vampiric Touch every 15 seconds to proc this "extra" damage, and then re-cast Vampiric Touch again (ideally on a different target to help with DoT uptimes) for that damage bonus. You only have 8 seconds to use this free cast, so use it wisely.

Depending on how much other stuff to do, you do not really need to go out of your way to cast this every 15 seconds, especially if this means losing Devouring Plague IconDevouring Plague casts. It is mostly just going to be passive damage naturally as you refresh your Vampiric Touch IconVampiric Touch and then re-cast it for the benefit. Just do not let the buff expire and play naturally and you will be optimal.

How to use Unholy Nova

As a Necrolord you get access to the Unholy Nova IconUnholy Nova ability. This is quite a unique ability to the game in that it is an AoE Bomb that applies Unholy Transfusion IconUnholy Transfusion to enemies around that target, scaling based on the amount of targets you are fighting. Specifically as you add targets the damage is adjusted (snapshot on initial hit) based on the square root of the number of targets.

So for example, if you are fighting one target the DoT might hit for damage per tick for the full 15 seconds. However, if you add another target, it hits for ~ per target for a total of (*2) damage. So as you add targets the damage goes up, it just changes how much each mob gets hit for.

Understanding how this works is crucial to optimizing your use of this spell, failure to do so can cost you lots of damage. The key to this mechanic that is not intuitive, is that the scaling DOES NOT adjust dynamically as targets die. This means that if you initially hit 3 targets with the DoT, for the remainder of the DoT it will always tick as if 3 targets are out, even if one or more dies. This same rule applies to critters, so make sure to clear those out before casting Unholy Nova IconUnholy Nova.

Shadow Priest playstyle and rotation guide

Playstyle & Rotation

General Rotation:

Outside Voidform priority:

  1. Maintain bothVampiric Touch andShadow Word: Pain on the target.
  2. Try to maintain a high uptime ofDevouring Plague on the target to make use of your Mastery, but make sure to dump your insanity in time so that you don’t over-cap it. SubsequentDevouring Plague will cause its damage over time effect to add into the existing DoT, so it is fine to overlapDevouring Plague DoT’s if you are about to over-cap insanity.
  3. Void Torrent / Mindbender
  4. Mind Blast on cooldown.

Inside Voidform priority:

  1. Void Bolt on cooldown (there will be 2 global cooldowns between void bolts)
  2. Devouring Plague to dump insanity
  3. Mind Blast
  4. Mind Flay

*If you are using the Shadowflame Prism legendary and your Mindbender is up, Shadow Word: Death is priority number 1.

Opener:

Assumed talents and night fae

  1. Pre-castVampiric Touch
  2. Shadow Word: Pain

  7. Void Eruption
  8. Power Infusion (off GCD)
  9. Void Bolt
  10. Mind Blast
  11. Devouring Plague
  12. Void Bolt
  13. Continue regular rotation

Assumed talents and Necrolord

  2. Shadow Word: Pain
  3. Void Torrent
  4. Shadowfiend
  5. Devouring Plague
  6. Mind Blast
  7. Void Eruption
  8. Power Infusion (off GCD)
  9. Void Bolt
  10. Unholy Nova

Multi Target:

With the Misery talent:

With the Searing Nightmare talent:

With the Searing Nightmare talent and Shadowflame Prism:

  • Devouring Plague when there are 2 targets. (or 3 targets inside Voidform)
  • Searing Nightmare when there are 3 or more targets outside Voidform, or 4 or more targets inside Voidform.
  • Cast Shadow Crash on cooldown.
  • Try to maintain Vampiric Touch on up to targets assuming they live long enough.
Stop casting Vampiric Touch if there are 7 or more targets.
  • Stop hard casting Shadow Word: Death when there are 7 or more targets, assuming Mindbender is active.
  • Stop hard casting Mind Blast when there are 7 or more targets, assuming Mindbender is active.
  • Cast Void Bolt on cd if you need the insanity until targets without the Hungering Void talent, or until 6 targets with the Hungering Void talent. It is fine to drop Void Bolt slightly earlier if you feel like you already have enough insanity to chain spam Mind Sear and Searing Nightmare.
  • Cast Mind Sear as your filler spell.

Playstyle

You generally don’t want to delay any of your cooldowns, unless doing so will not cause you to lose a cooldown.

Shadow’s cooldown timings always come down to the fight length, or the length of a phase during the fight.

If you are ever unsure on how long a fight is, or how many uses of your cooldowns you will get, the second best option is to use everything together on pull, on cooldown in between and line up everything again on the last use of the fight.

A couple examples to show where you would not just cast things on cooldown.

5 Minute ST:

  • 2 Seconds: Fae Guardians
  • 3 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 6 Seconds: Voidform/Power Infusion
  • 1 min 22 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 1 min 25 Seconds: Voidform
  • 1 min 32 Seconds: Fae Guardians
  • 2 min 32 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 2 min 35 Seconds: Voidform/Power Infusion
  • 3 min 2 Seconds: Fae Guardians
  • 3 min 33 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 4 min 32 Seconds Fae Guardians
  • 4 min 33 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 4min 35 Seconds: Voidform/Power Infusion

As you can see on for example Mindbender, casting it on cooldown 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and delaying slightly for other CDs both gives 5 total casts.

6 Minute ST:

  • 2 Seconds: Fae Guardians
  • 3 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 6 Seconds: Voidform/Power Infusion
  • 1 min 16 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 1 min 20 Seconds: Voidform
  • 2 min 20 Seconds: Fae Guardians
  • 2 min 31 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 2 min 35 Seconds: Voidform/Power Infusion
  • 3 min 31 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 4 min 0 Seconds: Fae Guardians
  • 4 min 1 Seconds: Voidform
  • 4 min 31 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 5 min 30 Seconds: Fae Guardians
  • 5 min 31 Seconds: Mindbender
  • 5 min 35 Seconds: Voidform/Power Infusion

As you can see Fae Guardians has a fairly long delay between 1st and second, even if you would’ve casted it on CD. 0, m, 3, min. You would still only get 4 total casts, so delaying it for the Bender/VF combo at ish, to make use of the Mastery bonus from Niya is better.
