N54 engine on e36?
Hello I have a 335i and recently purchased another N54 engine with tranny for a bargain price. I'm looking for a good car to put it in, would an e36 be good choice? Has anybody ever looked into this project and what would be needed. Thanks

Well it's been used in the E30, so I don't see why not.

To be honest an e36 is a good idea. But if ya want performance I would e46 it. But then I guess it would just be a turbo m54 with DI. Which isn't very iconic. It would be awesome to see in a 318ti. Lmfao
Nobody would recertify these machines after somebody screwed with them without any visibility into what they did.

I reckon Hakantt has swapped one into an e36 318ti, he lurks around here some.

He also had to beat the shit out of the frame to make it fit. Like dented the frame rail in half an inch or more. - 10-28-2017, 12:31 PM#7

Did he do a late model 6 cylinder turbo swap or was it a 4 cylinder turbo swap?

The video I posted is Hakentt and the car. He pulled the motor out of a 2011 335i.Originally Posted by pbonsalb

N54 engine on e36?
I researched further and looks like I will go on and do this swap, my main problem was the harness/electrical/ECM link up. I will be buying all that from a company called fuel tech. Those harnesses are expensive so I will save and hopefully start the swap by January/February

All bad I wouldn't want to do that to the frame, I'm second thinking this until I measure out an engineless e36Originally Posted by XnWarden

One of the turbo pipes doesnt fit. I cant remember if it is the downpipe or an intercooler pipe. But you must physically modify the frame.Originally Posted by Basedtiger

Honestly I think a turbo M/S5x would make more sense for you

Lifters are easy to change, so it does not make sense to swap in an N54 or N55 for that reason. Do the swap to have a big project, be different, add power, and get a newer motor. If it was me, I would just turbo the M52 -- pull the head, install a spacer and cutring, service the head and valve train as needed, install S52 cams. But I'd like to see people start swapping in the N54 -- I think its a great engine (have had an 08 535xit for 7 years).Originally Posted by Basedtiger

I think this is a good idea. Moar power is better.
However, I would recommend using angle grinder cutoff wheels to notch the frame rail for the clearance, then weld in plates and reinforcement to box it in... rather than beating in a huge dent in like Hakentt did.
Or possibly re-engineering where the downpipe travels, which appeared to be beyond his abilities or timeframe.
Watch a couple episodes of Project Binky to see what I mean about the rail.
In any case, there is a specific sub-forum for engine swaps (where that poop-splattered-flame-war of a thread is located).Eat, drink, and be merry - for tomorrow we drive. - 11-03-2017, 08:30 AM#16

I started this swap literally on March 1st - Looking to complete it in 3 months exactly. I have a 1997 M3 (auto), looking to swap a 2010 N54 Twin Turbo Drivetrain with a 6 speed. So there is a pedal swap being done too!
I’m here to tell you all how I did it! I do have a youtube series, but I wanted to help on the forum too. There are many ways to skin a cat, but this is the way I’ve chosen. I am getting ya’ll while in the middle of the swap, but I value your help, so any advice you’re willing to dispense, questions you may have, or general comments about the technology and common failures would be most welcomed!

My Customer/Friend, Ben!

And an intro video I made summarizing the swap!
I plan to bring this puppy to Gutenfest 2019 in June, along with my E30 S62. So I hope you enjoy where I’m going with this build and have some constructive comments!
This is a 1997 Alpine M3, bought by a customer of mine earlier this year. He bought it because he was in a front end accident and wanted to swap the drivetrain. This was an AWD E92, so we had to purchase a few parts to make it more user friendly to a RWD swap!
So I purchased
RWD oil pan from a E90 335i
RWD 6sped from an E90 335i
Other than that, most everything else can remain.
Engine positioning is always first on the list, and the most important because it dictates everything else on the car and as a result, all other ancilliary devices must work around the engine position.
I have a video on how I determined engine position here:
From there, I was able to build my transmission bracket, then shorten my shifter linkage. I did some live IG videos, but i shot myelf in the foot because I couldn't save it and take screenshots to show pictures at a minimum on how I did it.
As of today, the driveline is perfectly positioned where I need it.
I wanted to share my progress with the group here because I have done a lot of lurking up until this point to better understand E36 and E9X. So here I am offering an amalgamation of the 2! I hope you guys enjoy where I go with this swap. I should be done by May, so this will be a pretty quickly moving swap.
Again, any comments, updates, help, or advice you have I always welcome! Many thanks and stay tuned for more updates this almost daily!
