Happy Friday! It’s time for another wonderful Friday staff feature.

from Longmont Public Safety Department · 24 Sep

This week we go behind the scenes with Megan Beyerlein, our Digital Media Evidence Records Technician.

1. Where are you from, and how long have you been employed with Longmont Public Safety?

I'm originally from Bradenton, Florida, and that's also where I went to college. I got my bachelor’s degree in information technology. Prior to that, I worked for a police records department in Florida. So with my background in records and my IT degree, it helped me get this position. I moved to Colorado with my family in , and was hired in June of , right as Longmont Police Services implemented body cameras.

2. Favorite spot in Longmont?

I really like the St. Vrain Greenway. I drive down Martin Street and over the bridge in the mornings. There's always people on rafts in the water or fishing, and it just looks like a really nice relaxing spot. I think that's why it's my favorite.

3. What does a Digital Media Specialist do? What qualifies as digital media?

Digital media consists of video footage, which includes body cam footage, surveillance footage, doorbell camera footage, anything like that. It also consists of photos and audio calls, so it includes calls, phone calls between officers and witnesses, things of that nature. So when someone comes to the records window and wants digital media, we have a separate form we have them fill out to make the request.

If an individual wants video footage of an incident involving an officer, it is reviewed first because it could contain sensitive or personal information in the video. If there is sensitive information, we would then be required by law to redact any sensitive information in the video before releasing it to an individual making a request. This can be done by blurring out information or silencing any information that can be heard. We then release the digital file to the individual making the request.

4. What do you wish people knew about your job?

I wish people did not see body cameras as a negative. It really helps the public with their cases, but it also helps our officers as well against false allegations. When a video is released, it captures exactly what happens on the scene. The entire scene has been captured on video so everyone can see what happened. Most of the time, it helps individuals figure out exactly what the truth is.

I saw a video of a police officer on one call for a crash, and he happened to be facing the intersection where a second crash occurred. His body cam video actually helped provide details for the second crash. Longmont has required body cameras since March of It has just been in the last few years that body cameras have been implemented across the United States. I wish people knew that body cameras are part of our future and that they are not always a negative.

5. Favorite Food of all time?
