Vankyo Leisure 3 Review

We purchased the Vankyo Leisure 3 so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. Keep reading for our full product review.

The Vankyo Leisure 3 is a budget-priced mini projector that’s super compact, designed for someone who wants to be able to move their projector around on a whim or take it with them to events. The Leisure 3 even comes with its own carrying case for better portability. We spent hours testing out this projector’s design, setup process, image and audio quality, features, and overall performance. Let’s take a closer look.

Design: So very tiny

The Vankyo Leisure 3 is nothing special to look at. While there were certain design features we appreciated, we couldn’t help but think that the projector felt and looked like a cheap toy.

At 12.24 x 9.43 x 4.63 inches and only 2.4 pounds, the Vankyo Leisure 3 is surprisingly tiny. The lens is covered by a rubber cap, and the focus, keystone, and hardware control buttons are located on top of the case. When adjusting the focus, we noticed that the lens was wobbly and did not fit tightly in the case.

On one side of the projector is the power cord input. At only four feet, the power cord is annoyingly short and we had to get an extension cord to use the projector. On the opposite side are several connectivity options, including VGA, USB, HDMI, an SD card, the 3.5mm AV port, and the 3.5mm headphone output.

We couldn’t help but think that the projector felt and looked like a cheap toy.

The projector has a pretty decent fan design and runs cooler and quieter than expected. The speaker is located on the back, but it’s very small and not very powerful. We generally don’t expect much when it comes to built-in sound on a projector, but we found the Vankyo Leisure 3’s speaker to be basically useless (more on that later).

On the bottom is a thumbscrew-style kickstand to adjust the vertical angle. There are no side-to-side leveling adjustments and the feet are glued-on, non-slip rubber pads, so you’ll want to make sure you have a level surface to set it on.

We also liked the carrying case that came with the projector—it fits everything inside including the cables and remote without having to stuff anything in. It has what feels like a strong zipper and a sturdy fabric handle.

Setup Process: Mostly easy except for the lens

We found the setup process for the Vankyo Leisure 3 simple and quick. We plugged it in, turned it on, and tested out the VGA and HDMI connections with our laptop. We pressed the auto-detect button and our computer screen came right up on the projection surface. The SD card and USB connections were quick to establish in the same way—just plug into the port and the projector will recognize your device.

You can adjust the kickstand on the bottom of the projector to raise the image higher on our projection surface and easily use the keystone to adjust the image. We didn’t have any problem finding the right setting for the keystone, but the focus was a little trickier—the lens fit so loosely and was so wobbly that it took a bit longer to get the focus we wanted.

Image Quality: Good in very dark rooms

Our first thought was, “There’s no way this thing is going to project a quality image,” because it looks like a toy. Surprisingly, the projection was nice and clear with decent color and contrast. The bulb is not very bright, though, and the only way to get a decent projection is in a very dark room. We weren’t really satisfied until we closed the blackout curtains and had very little ambient light around us.

Surprisingly, the projection was nice and clear with decent color and contrast.

Unless you’re able to get that same level of darkness, you’ll find yourself frustrated with the image quality. In general, we would say this projector is not suitable for business situations—the ambient light needed for meeting attendees to take notes and read supplemental materials would be too much. The Vankyo Leisure 3, true to its name, is more suited to watching TV shows and movies at home.

Audio Quality: Insufficient speakers

Don’t expect much when it comes to the two 2W built-in speakers. We found them basically useless. They are thin, tinny, harsh and they blend in with the fan noise.

Luckily the projector has a headphone port that acts as an audio output, and you can hook your projector up to your stereo system with a 3.5mm cable. Audio quality through the port sounded good but ultimately we opted to connect a laptop to a portable Bluetooth speaker and use that as our audio source instead.

Software: Does its job

The Vankyo Leisure 3 runs custom software with all the usual options. It’s easy to understand and navigate via the remote or the hardware buttons on the chassis. It includes adjustment options for things like contrast, brightness, and luminosity—the same types of settings you may be familiar with from your TV or computer monitor.

Presets like “cinema mode” look okay, but we almost always prefer to set our own custom preferences. Every room and media source is different and we think minor adjustments to the settings can make a big difference when it comes to the quality of your projected image. The Vankyo Leisure 3’s software is very basic but it gets the job done.

Price: A really great value

The Vankyo Leisure 3 is very affordable and usually sells in the $70 to $100 range. There are a lot of other projectors in the same price range, but not from familiar brand names. The Vankyo Leisure 3 is a good value for its level of quality and a very popular option, mostly because it is so affordable.

Projectors in this price range are definitely for budget home entertainment systems or for occasional use as a novelty (like projecting a movie at a party). Cheap projectors sacrifice brightness, image quality, contrast, and projection size to get their prices so low.

Projectors in this price range are definitely for budget home entertainment systems or for occasional use as a novelty.

If you think ambient light is going to be a problem or want a brighter image, look for something that is 3,200 lumens or brighter. They are a little more expensive but the brightness makes a big difference.

Vankyo Leisure 3 vs. Vankyo Leisure 420

Vankyo has a pretty good reputation in the projector market and they have several more options for just a little bit more than the Vankyo Leisure 3. One of those options is the Vankyo Leisure 420, which is in the same price range. It may cost you $20 more than the Leisure 3, but it’s a decent upgrade that larger but it’s still very portable and includes all the same connectivity options.

Besides the form factor, the major difference is that the Vankyo Leisure 420 provides 3200 lumens of brightness as opposed to the Leisure 3’s 2400. The extra brightness means a lot more clarity, better colors, and better contrast. At 40-140 inches, it has a narrower viewing size, but not by much.

We think the Leisure 3 is the winner here, unless the super compact size of the Leisure 3 is a major selling point for you.

Final Verdict

A decent budget buy—if it’s for the right space.

Despite its toy-like construction, the Vankyo Leisure 3 is a decent projector from a respected brand. It’s an incredibly popular option, and as long as you know what you are buying, it can be a lot of fun to use. Just plan to use it in a very dark room, and don’t expect the most nuanced adjustment capabilities.

Vankyo Leisure 3 Pro review: specs and price

Vankyo Leisure 3 Pro

Why is Vankyo Leisure 3 Pro better than the average?

  • Weight?
  • Warranty period?
  • Minimum throw distance?
  • Width?
  • Thickness?
  • Height?
  • Volume?

General info

We consider a lower weight better because lighter devices are more comfortable to carry. A lower weight is also an advantage for home appliances, as it makes transportation easier, and for many other types of products.

Laser projectors have a much longer lamp life compared to traditional bulb projectors. The brightness and color reproduction also stays the same, whereas the brightness of bulb projectors can slowly degrade over time.

When covered under the manufacturer’s warranty it is possible to get a replacement in the case of a malfunction.

The width represents the horizontal dimension of the product. We consider a smaller width better because it assures easy maneuverability.

We consider a thinner chassis better because it makes the product more compact and portable. Thinness is a feature highlighted by many manufacturers of mobile devices, but it is essential for a wide range of products.

The height represents the vertical dimension of the product. We consider a smaller height better because it assures easy maneuverability.

Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space enclosed by the product's chassis or, in simpler terms, the space the product occupies.

Projection quality

Resolution is an essential indicator of a screen's image quality, representing the maximum amount of pixels that can be shown on the screen. The resolution is given as a compound value, comprised of horizontal and vertical pixels.

You can control the focus remotely, ensuring that the image stays crisp and clear.

Motorized or power zoom lenses allow the user to remotely press a switch, for example on a remote control, causing the projector to automatically zoom in or out and correct the size of the image.

Contrast ratio is the visual distance between the lightest and the darkest colors that may be reproduced on the display. A high contrast ratio is desired, resulting in richer dark colors and more distinctive color gradation.

It supports displaying 3D images from devices such as a 3D-compatible Blu-ray player, allowing you to watch films in 3D when using suitable glasses.

The display supports HDR10+, which is an improved version of HDR10 video technology. HDR10+ uses dynamic metadata so that each frame can have its own settings for contrast, brightness, and colors, which results in lifelike images.

HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) is an HDR video format. Although the picture quality isn’t as good as some other formats, such as Dolby Vision, it provides more lifelike images than SDR (standard dynamic range) video.

More HDMI ports mean that you can simultaneously connect numerous devices, such as video game consoles and set-top boxes.

With more USB ports, you are able to connect more devices.

AirPlay allows wireless connection of Apple devices with external screens or speakers. You may stream computer screen, video and music from iOS devices, play games like on consoles or present your slideshows easily on your TV.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows you to easily transfer data between different devices, such as smartphones, tablets and computers.

All DLNA-certified products are compatible with one another. When different devices are connected to the same network, data can be transferred easily between them.

Devices that have a DVI connector (usually computers and notebooks) can be connected to the TV set.

Devices that support Miracast can communicate via wi-fi in an open format.

S/PDIF is an interface used to transmit digital audio with high fidelity.

If the projector is not perpendicular to the projection surface, it will distort the image. Vertical lens shift allows you to correct this distortion so that you can place the projector below or above the projected image (e.g. mounting the projector to the ceiling).

A remote control allows you to control the device remotely. The remote control can be included or optional.

If the projector is not perpendicular to the projection surface, it will distort the image. Horizontal lens shift allows you to correct this distortion so that you can place the projector to the left or right of the projected image.

A sleep timer is a function that shuts off the power after a preset amount of time.

Devices with stereo speakers deliver sound from independent channels on both left and right sides, creating a richer sound and a better experience.

Devices with built-in smart TV features (such as Android TV or webOS) allow you to access popular streaming apps without the need to purchase/connect a separate smart TV device.

The device has a standard memory slot (such as an SD or micro SD card slot) that enables you to extend the built-in internal storage with affordable memory modules, or easily retrieve data, such as photographs, from the memory card.

You can use your voice to control key functions of the device and you can easily access your device without pushing any button.

Vankyo Leisure 3 Mini Projector: Our First-Look Review of Key Features and Capabilities

Posted on August 12, 2019 By Scott Wilkinson

At Projector Reviews, we cover not only home-theater, home-entertainment, and business/education projectors, but also mini projectors designed for packing light. One of the most popular such models on Amazon is the Vankyo Leisure 3, which measures a mere 7.8 x 5.8 x 2.7 inches and weighs in at only 2.4 pounds.

That’s about the size of a small laptop, making it easy to schlep anywhere you need a projected image. The included carrying case has room for the projector, cables, and remote, and it’s small enough to pack along with anything else you might need. Even better, its list price is only $99.99 with a $10 savings on Amazon as of this writing.

The Vankyo Leisure 3 fits in a small carrying case that easy to bring along just about anywhere.

The Vankyo Leisure 3 is a single-chip LCD projector that uses white LEDs as its illumination source. Wait, what? A single-chip LCD projector? That’s what the company tells me. In my communication with Vankyo reps, they never completely confirmed that it uses a color-filter wheel like a single-chip DLP projector, but when I told them I assumed as much, they said, “Glad you found the answer on your own!”

In a single-chip DLP projector, some viewers notice a “rainbow effect”—momentary rainbows that trail bright, moving objects on a dark background—which is caused by the color-filter wheel. I have no idea if it causes the same problem in a single-chip LCD design, though I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t.

Most inexpensive projectors have relatively high black levels, and at such a low price, this one probably does too. I don’t imagine it has a dynamic iris or LED modulation, which are used only on much more expensive projectors.

The Vankyo Leisure 3 makes a good companion for a laptop.

At the other end of the brightness scale, the Leisure 3 claims a peak light output of 2400 lumens, which is pretty high for such a low price tag. But of course, any such manufacturer claim must be taken with a grain of salt, and small, low-cost projectors like this often claim wildly inflated light-output numbers.

As Art Feierman, editor and president of Projector Reviews, points out, “A projector with a measurable 2400 lumens typically draws at least 220 watts (110V); this projector draws only 50. This is typical for these entry-level models. I think the Vankyo Leisure 3 should be typically bright for its class, which is to say a few hundred lumens.” On the other hand, the LEDs might be much brighter than low-cost bulbs; there’s no way to know without measuring it.

The Leisure 3 also claims a contrast ratio of 2000:1, but again, there’s no way to know if this is accurate without measuring it.

  • 800×480 resolution, supports 1920×1080 content
  • LED illuminated
  • 2400 lumens peak light output
  • 2000:1 contrast ratio
  • Fills screens from 32 to 176 inches
  • Throw distance from 4.9 to 16.4 feet
  • HDMI, USB, VGA, analog inputs
  • Innovative cooling system with heat dissipation
  • Noise-suppression technology cuts fan noise in half
  • Stereo speakers, 4W total audio power
  • TF slot accepts Micro SD memory chips
  • Compact size, about the same footprint as a small laptop

Special Features

This image appears on the Leisure 3 web page, but I can't see what it has to do with the projector's resolution, which is 800x480. That's much lower resolution than either of these illustrations represent.

The native resolution of the Leisure 3 is only 800×480, but it accepts content up to 1080p and downscales it. No wonder the product web page says, “Not recommended for PowerPoint or office presentations”! Interestingly, the web page includes a conceptual illustration of the difference in resolution between 1080p and 720p, but I don’t see what it has to do with the end result on the screen with this projector.

Another oft-repeated feature is the ability to fill screens in a wide variety of sizes, from 32 to 170 inches diagonally, and a throw-distance range from 4.9 to 16.4 feet. But the lens has no zoom function, so the size of the image is controlled entirely by the distance from the projector to the screen.

Several controls on the top of the projector include lens focus and keystone correction, but no zoom or lens shift.

The Leisure 3 does not provide lens shift, but most projectors under $1000 don’t, so no surprise there. It does offer vertical keystone correction to compensate for geometric distortions arising from less-than-ideal placement in the vertical direction. But such correction inevitably softens the picture, so I strongly recommend against using it, especially since the native resolution is quite low to begin with.

The projector has stereo speakers built in, each powered by 2 watts. That’s fine in a pinch, but any outboard speaker will probably sound much better. A 3.5mm analog-audio/headphone output lets you connect external speakers; even better, the projector can send audio wirelessly to Bluetooth speakers.

This illustration of the effect of Leisure 3's onboard audio system appears on the product's web page. Obviously, it should not be viewed as a literal representation!

Another interesting feature is an “innovative cooling system with heat dispersion.” I confirmed that this is a cooling fan, so I’m not sure what’s innovative about it. In addition, the company’s product page cites a noise-suppression technology that cuts fan noise in half, but I could find no details about it.

Also, I was unable to learn anything about the Leisure 3’s input lag time, so I have no idea if it’s well-suited for gaming.

The inputs on the Vankyo Leisure 3 are located on the side of the unit rather than the back. They include one HDMI 1.4 input along with a VGA input, USB port, and 3.5mm AV input (which, I assume, accommodates composite video and two channels of audio).

The only other connection is a TF card slot, which accepts Micro SD memory cards. The specs include a long list of supported video, audio, and photo file types, which means the Leisure 3 includes a built-in media player. This allows it to play files from a MicroSD card as well as a USB storage device.

The side-mounted connections include (L-R): 3.5mm headphone output, 3.5mm AV input, TF card slot, HDMI input, USB port, VGA input.

The USB port provides power, which is perfect for streaming dongles such as the Amazon Fire TV Stick and Roku Stick. You can plug a streaming stick into the HDMI input and connect its power cord to the USB port, and voila—you have a “smart” projector!

Another point made on the company’s product page is the ability to mirror a smartphone, tablet, or computer on the projector. That doesn’t mean some sort of wireless casting, but rather a wired connection. In fact, you need a lightning-to-HDMI adaptor for iOS devices and a micro USB-to-HDMI adaptor for Android devices.

The remote is super simple. Aside from power and input selection, it offers basic transport controls, four-way cursor rocker, menu access, and volume up/down controls.

The Bottom Line

If the number of verified-purchase reviews is any indication—and I think it is—the Vankyo Leisure 3 is one of the most popular mini projectors on Amazon, with over 5000 reviews as of this writing, 90% of which are 4- or 5-star ratings. Most other projectors, even much better-known models, typically have several hundred reviews. So, it must be doing something right.

Its main strengths are small size and LED light engine, which should last tens of thousands of hours. Plus, it has a media player built in as well as stereo speakers, and you can easily turn it into a smart projector with the addition of a streaming stick.

On the downside, its resolution is quite low, and it has no lens shift or even zoom, so placement is very inflexible. You have a little wiggle room with keystone correction, but that softens the already low resolution.

With the Leisure 3, you get quite a bit for less than $100.

Of course, no one said The Vankyo Leisure 3 is a home-theater projector. In fact, I might call it a family projector for games with the kids or movie night under the stars.

If you need something this portable, its low price lets you give it a try without risking much—in fact, it will probably be fun!

Vankyo Leisure 3: Compact Projector for Entertainment

Vankyo Leisure 3

The Vankyo Leisure 3 is complemented with an advanced graphics MStar V56 engine that greatly influences a reproducing quality. The specified unit comes with a specially designed bag for easy carrying and storage. The Vankyo Company offers its customers 3-year money-back guarantee. Note that the Vankyo Leisure 3 mini projector review will help you get acquainted with such a popular unit and compare its possibilities with your own requirements.

The first things that worth special attention are compact dimensions (7.9 x 5.9 x 3.1 inches) and lightweight (2.1 pounds) of the device. Thus, the Vankyo Leisure 3 mini projector can be placed anywhere in the room and won’t spoil the interior. This small unit has a traditional appearance: not really high body frame of white glossy plastic with ribbed side faces that partially mask large ventilation holes on the sides of the case. The lens is located on the front side. The focus ring moves soft and smooth, without backlash. It’s very easy to focus on sharpness with it. Buttons for the menu navigating and a signal source selecting are located at the top. The body frame is solid, without scratches, and weak elements.

As written in Vankyo Leisure 3 mini projector manual, the user can easily connect the unit with a smartphone even without downloading the app. The iPhone owners have to pay attention to the extra Lightning to HDMI adapter using, while Android keepers can avail of Micro USB adapter that is sold separately. Various input types (PC, HDMI, speaker, and USB) make it easy to hook up lots of facilities. A special TF slot is made for Micro SD memory chips and works seamlessly. It’s suitable for videos playing, TV shows watching, photos enjoying, moreover, it can be easily connected to your PS3, PS4, Xbox One, or Wii.

The Vankyo Leisure 3 review can’t help but accentuate its 1920x1080 resolution and 2000:1 contrast ratio, which is a good choice for home entertainment. Pay attention that the manufacturer doesn’t recommend the device for presentation or office work. The feeling of a large screen is achieved by using an image size of 32 to 170 inches with a projection distance between 4.9ft and 16.4ft. The picture quality is good, but there must be total darkness in the room, otherwise, some dimness will appear. The unit is equipped with an innovative cooling system with heat dissipation, as well as noise reduction technology that halves fan noise. It appeals to me that the Vankyo Leisure 3 manual adjustment is rather simple and all I have to do is follow the instruction that is detailed and clear. The manual contains all the useful data and even will help get rid of some simple problems.
