WCIA, virtual channel 3 (UHFdigital channel 34), is a CBS-affiliatedtelevision stationlicensed to Champaign, Illinois, United States and serving the Central Illinois region. Owned by the Nexstar Media Group, it is part of a duopoly with Springfield-licensed MyNetworkTV affiliate WCIX (channel 49). Both stations share studios on South Neil Street/US 45 in downtown Champaign and also operate a sales office and news bureau on East Edwards Street near the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield. WCIA's transmitter is located west of Seymour, Illinois.
Since WCIA's over-the-air signal cannot be seen in western parts of the market (including Springfield and Jacksonville), it is simulcast in high definition on WCIX's second digital subchannel (VHF channel 11.2 or virtual channel 49.2) from a transmitter in Clear Lake Township. Nielsen Media Research treats WCIA and WCIX-DT2 as one station in local ratings books, using the identifier name WCIA+.
History[edit]
WCIA made its first broadcast on November 14, 1953. It was owned and operated by Champaign-based Midwest Television, headed by August C. Meyer Sr., a lawyer and chairman of the board of the Champaign-based Bank of Illinois. Meyer founded Midwest Television in 1952, and expanded the company's footprint by buying WMBD-AM–FM–TV in Peoria, Illinois, in 1960 and KFMB-AM–FM–TV in San Diego, California, in 1964. Midwest sold off controlling interest in its Illinois television holdings to Nexstar in 1999. That company acquired Midwest's remaining interest in the Illinois stations in 2001.
WCIA was a primary CBS affiliate, carrying secondary affiliations with NBC and DuMont.[1] DuMont shut down in 1956 and WCIA dropped NBC in 1959 when WCHU-TV (now WICD) started. It also carried a few ABC shows during the 1953–1954 television season.
As the only commercial VHF station in Central Illinois, WCIA has been one of the country's most dominant television stations for most of its history. On two occasions, it fought off attempts by WICS/WICD and WAND to force it onto the UHF band by claiming that moving to UHF would cause it to lose 150,000 viewers.
Despite its dominance of the market, WCIA provides only a Grade B signal to the Springfield area. Meyer realized early on that Champaign–Urbana and Springfield/Decatur were going to be one giant television market. He originally wanted to build WCIA's tower in White Heath, roughly halfway between Champaign and Decatur. The tower would have been placed on some of the highest ground in Central Illinois. However, just after construction began, Prairie Television (owner of WTVP, now WAND) filed an objection. Prairie claimed WCIA was encroaching on its territory. To avoid delays, WCIA moved its transmitter to the current location in Seymour. Despite this, Decatur (the second-largest city in the western half of the market) receives WCIA's signal very well.
While it frequently trounced WICS/WICD and WAND in the ratings, Meyer decided to open a low-powered relay of WCIA on UHF channel 49 to get better coverage in the state capital. In 1985, this became full-powered station WCFN. In 2002, WCFN separated from WCIA and became the area's UPN affiliate. However, few viewers on the western half of the market lost access to WCIA due to the extremely high penetration of cable and satellite, which is all but essential for acceptable television in much of this vast market. The few viewers who lost access regained it soon afterward when WCIA and WCFN activated their digital television services and added each other to their second digital subchannels. WCFN's main channel instead carried WCIA's main schedule in full high definition, with WCFN's channel remaining in standard definition until multiplexing technology improved to allow WCIA and WCFN's main channels to both be in HD. This, and area cable and satellite access, assured both stations full market coverage. WCFN changed its call letters to WCIX in 2011.
For decades, WCIA was available on cable systems in Bloomington–Normal, in the Peoria market, along with sister station WMBD-TV. In March 2000, shortly after Nexstar bought controlling interest in both stations, it announced it would drop WCIA from AT&T Cable Services (now Comcast Xfinity) and cable systems in surrounding areas, a move that would eventually be forced nationwide, due to CBS affiliation agreements requiring only one affiliate being authorized per market on pay television services. It would centralize WMBD's advertising revenue and preserve its ratings standing within the Peoria market without numbers being further stunted by WCIA. A group known as "Citizens to Keep WCIA on-the-air" petitioned Nexstar to revert the change, but was unsuccessful. WCIA's Grade B signal still covers the Bloomington–Normal area decently (extending as far west as Morton), meaning that Bloomington–Normal residents can still receive WCIA over-the-air.
In November 2006, work began to re-secure WCIA's existing tower in Seymour so it would be able to hold a new digital transmission line and antenna.[2]
WCIA was the longtime home to Illinois Fighting Illinifootball and men's basketball games that were not aired on national television. Originally produced by WCIA, the station later carried the Illini via the Big Ten Conference's syndicated package with ESPN Plus. Beginning in 2007, these games have since moved to the Big Ten Network. The station still airs Illini men's basketball games that are carried as part of CBS's overall NCAA and Big Ten contracts.
In 2009, WCIA's longtime weathercaster Judy Fraser retired from the station after 34 years.[3] She was only the second head weathercaster in the station's history at the time. Meteorologist Robert Reese took over as Chief Meteorologist. His death in connection with complications from cancer in October 2012 came as a shock to the community.[4] In his early battle, WCIA sold red ribbons in support of Reese and the American Cancer Society.
On September 11, 2014, WCIA anchor Dave Benton announced on-air that he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and that he had only months to live. He explained that the doctors told him that his cancer had returned and that it was too large for surgery or radiation.[5] Benton was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in November 2013 after doctors found a tumor on the left side of his head. He underwent surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy and completed radiation treatment in February 2014.[7] On April 13, 2015, Benton announced on the 6 p.m. newscast that he was stepping down from the anchor chair due to continued health issues and failed treatments, though he hoped to continue his signature crime reports for the 5 p.m. news as long as his health allowed.[8] Benton died at home on May 26.[9][10]
On December 3, 2018, Nexstar announced it would acquire the assets of Chicago-based Tribune Media for $6.4 billion in cash and debt. The deal—which would make Nexstar the largest television station operator by total number of stations upon its expected closure late in the third quarter of 2019—would result in WCIA and WCIX gaining additional sister stations in nearby markets including Chicago (independent stationWGN-TV) and St. Louis (Fox affiliate KTVI and CW affiliate KPLR-TV). (Ownership conflicts existed in two existing Nexstar markets involving Nexstar's duopoly of CW affiliate WISH-TV and MyNetworkTV affiliate WNDY-TV (which were both sold to Circle City Broadcasting) and Tribune's duopoly of Fox affiliate WXIN and CBS affiliate WTTV/WTTK in Indianapolis and Nexstar's virtual triopoly of CBS affiliate WHBF-TV, CW affiliate KGCW and Fox-affiliated SSA partner KLJB and Tribune-owned ABC affiliate WQAD-TV (which was sold to Tegna) in the Quad Cities.)[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] The sale was approved by the FCC on September 16 and was completed on September 19, 2019.

Originally, WCFN/WCIX aired its digital signal in a reduced 4:3480istandard definition format on both its main channel and the digital subcarrier of WCIA. In June 2015, WCIX upgraded to a full 1080i16:9 high definition signal, the same as WCIA. In September 2016, WCIA begin broadcasting Bounce TV on 3.3 and Grit TV on 3.4.
Analog-to-digital conversion[edit]
WCIA shut down its analog signal, over VHF channel 3, on June 12, 2009, the official date in which full-power television stations in the United States transitioned from analog to digital broadcasts under federal mandate. The station's digital signal remained on its pre-transition UHF channel 48.[22] Through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers display the station's virtual channel as its former VHF analog channel 3. On January 17, 2020, WCIA moved to channel 34 as a result of the spectrum repack.

WCIA currently broadcasts its news from its studios in Champaign. It currently broadcasts 40 hours of news a week, and one hour on Saturday and Sunday. For most of its history, it has been central Illinois' dominant news station, owing to its status as the market's only VHF station.
On September 12, 2011, WCIA debuted an hour-long lifestyle and news program titled ciLiving.tv, the Springfield market's first hour-long 4 p.m. news program; the show utilizes interactivity with viewers, through the use of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, along with online polls and audience quizzes via text message and the station's website.[23] The show also utilizes the station's new set, which is also used for the station's morning show, as well as other programs.
On October 24, 2012 during the 5:00 p.m. newscast, WCIA and sister station WCIX began broadcasting local news in high definition.[24] This made the WCIA/WCIX operation the third local news operation and second "Big Four" network affiliated station to have made the upgrade. However, the newscasts on WCIX continued to be seen over the air in a letterboxed format until June 19, 2015 because its main channel was still transmitted in 4:3 standard definition until it upgraded to HD on that date.
In April 2015, WCIA expanded its 6 p.m. newscast from 30 minutes to one hour to provide better coverage of local news.
In late 2015, WCIA expanded its news coverage from the State Capitol. The station now produces and airs Capitol Connection on Sunday mornings after CBS' Face the Nation. The show is also carried on other Nexstar stations in Illinois.
In October 2016, WCIA expanded its morning show from four hours to five hours, making the station have the only local news at 9 a.m. in the market.

Department of Agriculture video news releases[edit]
In an article published on March 13, 2005, The New York Times documented WCIA's use of government video news releases without clear attribution as such. The Times reported, "WCIA, based in Champaign, had run 26 segments made by the U.S. Agriculture Department over the past three months alone." WCIA acknowledged running the releases in the early hours of its morning news as part of its traditional service of agribusiness news to its rural viewers.[25]
Abigail Metsch bikini photo[edit]
The station gained national attention in April 2021 when reporter Abigail Metsch posted a photo of herself on Instagram in a thongbikini, with Metsch's back facing the camera with her head turned towards the camera, completely exposing her buttocks and mentioning the station in the photo caption. After a viewer complained to the station, the News Director asked her to remove the photo.[26] WCIA management reportedly planned to keep the punishment "in house" until it was reported on news station website FTVLive.com, after which the Nexstar corporate office got involved and the station was forced to terminate Metsch.[27] Metsch removed the photo and went private on all of her social media accounts.[28] Metsch has since resurfaced as a reporter for KBTX-TV in Bryan, Texas.[29]
2021 Champaign shooting[edit]
On May 19, 2021, WCIA reported that Champaign police officer Chris Oberheim had been killed in the line of duty. Officer Oberheim had responded to a domestic dispute call; during that call shots were fired. Oberheim was shot and killed, along with Darion Lafayette who originally fired shots at the responding officers. On May 21, WCIA reported on the incident and appeared to memorialize Darion Lafayette. A graphic provided by the Lafayette family was displayed on screen, which depicted Lafayette with angel wings. What followed was community outrage, including thousands of comments on the WCIA Facebook page.[citation needed]

Alex Corradetti joined the WCIA 3 Team in February of 2016. She is a Morning Show Anchor, Reporter, Host & Producer.
Alex is passionate about storytelling and public speaking. She believes that the most compelling stories are the ones that impact people’s lives.
Alex graduated with honors from Illinois State University in May 2014.
During her collegiate years, Alex laid the foundation of her broadcasting career at TV-10 News. Alex was the first-ever EP & Host of Ten on 10. During her in that position, that show was awarded first place for Outstanding Soft Program of 2013 at the Illinois News Broadcasters Association Awards.
Alex continued to gain media exposure while working for The Chicago Tribune after college. She has also worked at Rockit Ranch Productions as a Social Media Specialist. During this experience, Alex had the opportunity to produce content for ABC’s Windy City Live.
In her spare time, she loves to travel, write, watch movies, play with her dog, spend time with family and is a pun enthusiast.

Meet The WCIA 3 Weather Team
Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lighty:

Dreams do come true, and Kevin is living his right now. Growing up in Veedersburg, IN, just an hour from Champaign, Kevin grew up watching WCIA. He was even a weather watcher for Judy Fraser when he was just a teenager.
As a kid, Kevin shot weather videos with his parents’ camcorder as storms approached and pretended to be a weatherman on TV. There was no doubt Kevin would have his dream of becoming a real meteorologist come true soon.
As Kevin got older, he became a storm spotter for the National Weather Service in Indianapolis and got his first start in broadcasting in Danville, IL at 94.9 K-Rock and D-102 as a radio DJ at the age of 17.
Kevin got his first crack at TV weather broadcasting while attending Vincennes University where he was a weather anchor for the PBS station WVUT. Kevin received his Associate of Arts degree in Radio/TV Broadcasting from Vincennes.
Kevin got his first “real” job on television at the CBS station WTHI Channel 10 in Terre Haute, IN. He spent more than three years there as the weather anchor. While working at WTHI, Kevin also attended Indiana State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography with a minor in Climatology and emphasis in Meteorology.
His next job was at WKYT in Lexington, Kentucky where he was the morning meteorologist and storm chaser for 2 years, followed by a short stint doing fill-in weather for WRTV in Indianapolis. Kevin then went to Springfield, MO in July of 2007 to become the Chief Meteorologist at KSPR. He was there for 10 years and accomplished many things during his tenure. He covered the Joplin, MO EF-5 tornado, storm chased with the Vortex 2 research team, and received an award for best weathercast in Missouri 7 out of his 10 years and had 2 Emmy nominations. Kevin was also part of the team that won a national Edward R. Murrow award for Best Newscast the night of the Branson Leap Day tornadoes in 2012.
Kevin also holds the seal of approval from both the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Association (NWA).
Storm chasing is one of Kevin’s favorite things to do when he has the chance. He has seen numerous tornadoes while chasing in the Plains over the last decade.
In his spare time, Kevin enjoys playing or watching nearly any sport. He is a HUGE Cubs fan and most recently enjoyed watching game 7 of the World Series in Wrigleyville. Wrigley just so happens to be the name of his adopted 12-year-old beagle. He’s also a fan of the Chicago Bears & Blackhawks, but being from Indiana, he would choose the Indiana Pacers as his favorite basketball team.
Kevin has many unique hobbies including being a DJ at weddings and parties. He also is a certified FAA commercial drone pilot. Kevin has shot many drone weather-related videos that have made it onto national news outlets over the past year. Kevin is also a ham radio operator, call sign WX9KSL.

Midday Meteorologist Jack Gerfen:

Jack’s interest in weather and desire to become a meteorologist goes all the way back to fifth grade. On the first day of the weather segment in science class, he learned about tornadoes. Later that evening, Jack had to go into the basement because severe thunderstorms rolled through suburban Detroit. That instantly sparked Jack’s interest in weather that would lead him to KEYC News 12 in Mankato, Minnesota from October 2012 to WCIA 3 in late July of 2015.
Always interested in science, Jack attended Valparaiso University and graduated with a B. S. in Meteorology with minors in Mathematics and Communications alongside friend and future co-worker, Lisa Meadows. While at Valpo, Jack was a member of a variety of groups. He was in two summer storm chases for the Valparaiso University Storm Intercept Team. He took weathercasting from GMA meteorologist Ginger Zee of ABC’s Good Morning America and was a member of Valparaiso University Television. He interned at WDIV in Detroit, Michigan.
Being from Michigan, Jack enjoys being outdoors and on the water. He’s a lifelong swimmer and used to coach various teams in his city as well as for the YMCA and USA Swimming. And having been raised in Motown, he is a big car guy and loves to cruise. Jack is the station’s biggest Star Wars fan! Feel free to get in touch with him about weather or chat about cars!
Weekend Forecaster Amelia Henderson

Amelia Henderson joined the WCIA Weather Team in September of 2019. Henderson is originally from Atlanta, Indiana and is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and the University of South Australia. Amelia’s passion for meteorology stemmed from her interest in the environment as she is also a Padi Scuba Dive Master and has worked as a dive professional in several countries including Australia and the Bahamas.
Amelia started her career at WBOY in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 2017 where she covered news, sports and weather. After a year and a half in West Virginia, Amelia made the move to Champaign, Illinois to pursue her career in meteorology full-time. Throughout her college career Amelia worked as an in-house production assistant and sideline reporter for Orange Power Studios, Oklahoma State University’s in-house sports production department. She also anchored The Poke Report, a student ran national award-winning sports talk show. Throughout her college career Amelia won several national and regional awards from both the National Broadcast Education Association and the National Broadcast Society. Before making the move to her first job in Clarksburg, Amelia was an intern for KOTV in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she learned the fields of both sports and weather.
In Amelia’s free time she enjoys traveling, walking her dog Mako, and flying her drone.

The History of WCIA, Channel 3, Champaign, IL
In 1953, across the prairie of mid-Illinois brand new television sets began to flicker with pictures from St. Louis, Peoria, Decatur, Springfield, Champaign, Bloomington and Danville. Local entrepreneurs invested their lives and fortunes in a new industry hoping to attract advertisers and capture viewers in each of those cities and rural areas to the images and sounds they would broadcast.
Each new television station owner had different obstacles to overcome, some achieved success, while others failed.Competition brought on many legal challenges between stations and owners. Television careers began, on-air personalities became local celebrities while other broadcasters worked behind the scenes.
This book is the story of those entrepreneurs, managers, sales representatives, studio engineers, on-air personalities along with politicians, the FCC, even the legal system all the way to the Supreme Court. It's a detailed story of a budding local industry during television's golden years, the first years we saw “Pictures on the Prairie.”

WCIA Picks Up a Springfield Signal
After making several attempts to bring a full powered UHF station to Springfield to broadcast the signal of WCIA, it wouldn't be until 1967 for Midwest Television to gain such a station. The allocation of channel 49 was moved from Jacksonville, Illinois to the Capitol City with the approval of a UHF translator for WCIA. Even though it wasn't a full powered facility, W-49-AA would go on the air in 1967. There's more on the history of Channel 49 below. The addition would give Midwest Television broadcast stations for Channel 3-Champaign, 31-Peoria, 71-LaSalle, and 49-Springfield.
WCIA vs. Cable TV
During the 1960s, and even though the 1970s, Midwest Television fought local cable systems to maintain a monopoly on CBS programming. Cable companies in Paxton, Kankakee were two of the communities which border other TV markets and wanted to bring outside CBS signals into their communities. One argument in favor was the many times in which WCIA preempted popular CBS programs to broadcast University of Illinois sports. Many viewers complained that they had a right to bring in outside signals from Chicago to add to their station lineups. This attitude toward cable TV as being "the enemy" virtually eliminated any cable TV advertising on WCIA throughout much of its history.

CBS Color
By January of 1966, CBS was broadcasting about half of it's schedule of programs in color, while NBC was virtually 100% color. ABC was still just slightly behind CBS in hours being broadcast in color.
There were several shows broadcast in color on CBS which had to convert from previous seasons of black and white programming. Among those included "Gilligan's Island," "The Wild, Wild West" and the "Andy Griffith Show."
As the network made the change to color, the promotional announcements for those shows would be promoted as being "...in color on CBS."
Each of the programs would be preceded by the 10-second CBS color logo shown at left. This was comparable to the NBC peacock and the ABC color logo used before each color program.

WCIA News 1964-1969
WCIA has enjoyed a special history when it comes to their local news product. As it's described in some detail in "Pictures On the Prairie," whether it was intentional or just an accident, a decision was made to offset the broadcast times of the evening and late night broadcast times of the WCIA news.
The other local heritage stations, for most of the time during the 1950s had broadcast local news at 6 and10pm. It was also an era when the network news broadcasts were 15-minutes long most airing at 6 pm or 6:15 pm. The local stations would then broadcast its local news at either before or after the network news at 6 pm or 6:15 pm. The late-night local news would air from 10 to 10:15 pm, although there were also some broadcasts of 30-minute local newscasts at 10 pm.
WCIA would air its local news at 6:30 pm and at 10:30 pm. The reason, most likely, was to collect TV news audience across central Illinois in Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, and Danville without any challenges from the local stations in each of those cities. This would establish WCIA as a regional news service for many years to come....even after WCIA moved the broadcast times to the more traditional times of 6 and 10 pm in 1959. During the 1960s and '70s, WCIA would have one of the largest single market shares of local news viewing in the country.
Another unique factor which helped make WCIA the central Illinois regional news station was the long-running news anchor staff. The combination of Paul Davis, Tom Schoendienst (sports) and Mr. Roberts (weather) would carry Channel 3 to number one across central Illinois from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s. Even though, WCIA was number one across central Illinois, the individual local stations in Springfield, Decatur would still have the largest news audience in their respective cities, WCIA would pick up enough audience from Champaign, Danville and the surrounding areas of central Illinois with minimal UHF TV service, to take it statistically to number one for many years.
In 1963 Robert D. McMullin was listed as WCIA News Editor (News Director). Mr. McMullin is pictured at left from an unknown live broadcast on Channel 3. He would remain as WCIA's News Director until 1967. Paul Davis would take the reins of the Channel 3 News where he would continue through 1979.

"Soulside"
was produced by WCIA as part of their public affairs commitment to the community during the late 1960's and early 1970's. It dealt with issues of the Black community of Champaign-Urbana and Central Illinois. It was originally hosted by former NFL player, actor, artist Harold Bradley Jr. "Soul Side" was a 30-minute show which aired at seems at various times on the WCIA schedule, including Sunday at 6 PM, as well as weeknights during prime time at various days and times. Some of the subjects touched on were housing, jobs, health issues, politics, music, culture, lifestyles and more. Included here are a few of the posters produced by the Art Department at WCIA during the time of the shows airing. Other hosts included Beverly Murray, Tom McDaniel, Quentin Bradford and Anne Franklin. It's also noted just how progressive the production and subject matter was for central Illinois television at the time. It's the dedication to the community and the efforts of WCIA and it's staff members during its history which gives the station the reputation it has enjoyed over the years. The posters above are just a few of the many pictures which were submitted to this website. Paul Davis
Reporter, Anchor and News Director of WCIA
Fifteen-year-old Paul Davis began his broadcast career at WCRA Radio in Effingham, Illinois. His mother was one of the first female news directors in broadcasting at the southern Illinois radio station. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
Mr. Davis joined the news department at WCIA in 1960 and became news director in 1967. During his time at WCIA, Channel 3 would be noted as having one of the highest audience shares for local news among all of the television stations in the country. He would anchor the evening and late night newscasts from the early 1960's to 1980 and be a part of a legendary team of WCIA anchors including Tom Schoendienst (sports) and Mr. Roberts (weather-pictured below with Mr. Davis).
Paul Davis was instrumental in the hiring of also legendary, Jerry Slabe, from WAND in 1978. In 1980 Mr. Davis' 20-year tenure at WCIA would end with his move as news director at WGN-TV in Chicago.

PM Magazine
PM Magazine was a syndicated concept light feature news magazine which included segments produced by Westinghouse Broadcasting as well as its affiliate partners. Each station would have their own set of hosts who would introduce each segment and feature local sites as background. Each location would tie-in to a particular segment featured in a show. The series was broadcast Monday-Friday during "prime time access" or the period from 6:30-7pm (CT).
At WCIA, the PM Magazine was its own department within the station and operated independently from the operation of Channel 3. It was hosted during the 1980's by (top right picture): Steve Traynor, Suzanne Kaye, (picture low left) Carrie White and Van King-1987-89. (picture low right): Carrie White and John Valenziono-1987-1989. Not pictured here: Mike Caplin. Mike Caplin is pictured in the TV Guide ads for PM Magazine below.

Jerry Slabe
News Anchor
Jerry Slabe, began his TV career at the ill-fated WJJY, Channel 14 in Jacksonville, Illinois after being a radio broadcaster in his native Wisconsin. After his time in the late 1960s and very early 70s, he would move along with fellow Channel 14 workmate Mike Cheevers to WAND, Channel 17 in Decatur. There he would be a reporter and eventually would become the station's chief anchor.
He left WAND after the Easter 1978 Ice Storms which destroyed the Channel 17 broadcast tower near Argenta-Oreana. Coincidentally enough, that same storm also collapsed the former Channel 14 tower as well. From WAND, he would move to WCIA as the lead anchor during the final years of the Paul Davis news director tenure. He moved into the role held by the long-serving Paul Davis quite well and would lead the central Illinois regional news powerhouse well through the remainder of the 20th Century.
During that time he would marry a reporter/anchor at WCIA, Marta Carreira. When the station was sold by Midwest Television, Nexstar conducted a purge of virtually all of the longtime regular reporters/anchors who presumably weighed down the payroll of the station. Mr. Slabe and Ms. Carreira were two who would lose their position at Channel 3.
The couple would not go quietly as both would battle Nexstar on demands that the new owner had made allegedly to get them to resist and gave the company reason to fire the couple.
The Slabes would challenge the action in court and by 2008 resulted in a judgment in favor of the former anchors. The Slabes received back pay, plus the dollar value of some of their other contract benefits during the period of time through the completion of their original contract. The story was told in detail in the Jim Dey's column from the Champaign News-Gazette from Saturday, March 29, 2008.
Marta Carreira would go on to establish herself in a law career in the Chicago area, while Jerry Slabe retired.
