  20. Include a brief channel summary in your YouTube banner

So let’s get started with our YouTube banner tips!

1. Pick a YouTube banner layout that fits your vision

When it comes to selecting a YouTube banner template, look for a layout that works for you. Think about where you want the focus of your banner to be, and the effect that you want it to have.

There are a few basic YouTube banner layouts you can start with.

Centered title layout

Placing your title in the center of your YouTube banner puts the emphasis on the font. The symmetrical layout will make your title look bold and focused, drawing the audience’s attention to your central message.

Technology YouTube Banner Template

Asymmetrical layout

An asymmetrical layout can look more casual and playful. Typically, you would place your title to one side of the banner and balance it out with a picture on the other side, like in this baking YouTube banner template.

Sectioned layout

If you want to incorporate multiple images into your banner, you can do so by dividing your banner into sections. To prevent your banner from looking cluttered, make sure that the sections are even widths. Remember the ideal YouTube banner size for templates for this layout.

2. Offer a window into what viewers can expect from your channel

Odds are, someone has landed on your channel one of two ways: they either watched a video of your and wanted more, or someone linked them to your channel.

Your banner can indicate to visitors whether or not your channel will offer them more of what they’re interested in. That means that the style, tagline and images you include should give people a bite-sized view of what your channel is all about.

For example, say you’re a travel vlogger. Your YouTube banner should indicate to visitors that they can expect more adventures from you, like in this template:

3. Include your brand tagline or slogan in your YouTube banner

What’s your channel’s elevator pitch? What’s your core value proposition? Include your catchy tagline in your YouTube banner.

Typically, YouTubers will put their tagline along the top or bottom of their banners. For example, this YouTube banner template for a gaming channel includes their taglines on the left of the banner, just above the profile image:

Gaming Youtube Banner Template

To avoid cluttering up your banner design, keep your tagline to one sentence.

Another option is to simply include your website URL in your banner. That will also help spread awareness about your brand.

If you aren’t sure what your brand tagline is, it’s worth spending some time doing some YouTube brand development. Work out what your brand is and how you want to be perceived.

4. Keep your YouTube banner design simple

There isn’t a lot of space to pack too many design elements into your YouTube banner. That’s why it’s good practice to keep your YouTube banner design simple.

For example, simply use a photo as the background of your YouTube banner, with your title and nothing else. Like in this YouTube banner template that is simple but effective:

Aesthetic Youtube Banner Template

You can make the text pop from the background by creating a transparent overlay. Place your text on top of a square icon and then adjust the icon’s opacity so that the background image shows through.

Now you can read the text without obscuring the background image, like in the YouTube banner below!

If you want, you can put even more focus on the title in your YouTube banner design. For example, take a look at how the popular travel channel High On Life uses a simple background image, allowing the big, bold font to stand out:

5. Use a font that reflects the mood of your channel

The fonts you use can communicate what the tone, style and even the topic of your channel are. That’s because people tend to associate different personalities with different fonts.

For example, which font looks happier to you?

happy font

Probably the bouncy second font, right?

We associate different fonts with different industries. For example, serif fonts are typical of more traditional industries like publishing and insurance. Meanwhile, sans serif fonts are more commonly found in branding for tech companies.

While certain fonts look more reliable and traditional, other fonts look more casual and playful. For example, take a look at the font that the comedy duo of Good Mythical Morning uses in the YouTube banner for their channel:

good mythical morning banner

The font is a bit quirky and not too serious.

Or take this YouTube banner template that uses a decorative font to give it a creative feel:

Now, look at the more serious and reputable serif fonts used in Veritasium‘s YouTube banner. Their videos teach science and engineering concepts, and they’ve gone for a look that is in line with more traditional education industry branding:

6. If you use a photo, make sure it’s high-quality

A blurry image can ruin an otherwise amazing design. The images you use in your banner should have a minimum resolution of 100-150 dpi to adhere to the YouTube banner size for templates while still being crisp and visible.

Most stock photo sites like Unsplash or Pexels will provide images in high-quality. (Venngage also has a stock photo image library with high-quality photos!)

But if you’re using your own original images, make sure they are high resolution when you upload them to use for your YouTube banner.

The same principles of banner design apply to your Twitch banners too, if you’re a streamer. Make sure your offline banner uses high-quality stock photography. Using great stock photography helps your stream seem more professional.

7. Include a call-to-action in your YouTube banner

Your banner is prime real estate on your YouTube profile. If there’s an action you want visitors to take (like, say, slamming that subscribe button), why not include it in your banner?

A call-to-action (or CTA) is a phrase or button that asks readers to do a specific thing, like following you on Twitter or signing up for your newsletter. (Psst – we’ve also got newsletter templates).

Content marketing guru Neil Patel is never afraid to throw a CTA at you, so why should you be?

If you are selling merchandise or promoting an upcoming event that you want your audience to know about, your YouTube banner is also a great place to mention it.

You can even add a link to your online store directly in your Youtube banner. That’s just one of the handful of ways you can effectively sell on YouTube, according to Sellfy.

In fact, if you’re a YouTuber who makes videos and also sells a digital product, you can make 4x more than just the YouTube ad income.

In this YouTube photography channel banner, the creator has included handles of their other social accounts so that their subscribers know where to see more of their work.

8. Coordinate your YouTube banner with your channel icon

If you want your YouTube profile page to look professional, every design element should blend seamlessly together.

The first thing viewers will probably look at when they land on your profile is your banner. The second thing will probably be your channel icon.

The template below fits the YouTube banner size perfectly and contrasts the bright gradient of the background to make the YouTuber’s image stand out.

It can also be a good idea to use the same color scheme and visual style in both images. Typically, you should use your brand colors.

For example, take a look at how well the POPSUGAR Fitness YouTube banner and channel icon go together:

Venngage’s My Brand Kit makes it easy to add your brand color palettes to a YouTube header in just a click. Find out more about My Brand Kit.

If you’re a streamer, your Twitch offline banner can be a great place to showcase your logo. The Twitch banner is much larger than a YouTube banner, so you have more room to be creative with text, photos, icons, and your logo.

9. Be mindful of design trends in your niche

Take a look at this beauty channel YouTube banner template. The image, the fonts and the background color combination all serve a purpose: to reflect the beauty industry.

Beauty Tips YouTube Banner Template

The pastel color scheme, personal font style, and whimsical image are what viewers would expect of a beauty channel. Designing a YouTube banner that speaks to the audience is crucial in industries as popular as beauty, gaming, and baking.

For example, popular baking YouTuber CupcakeJemma uses a script font and sprinkle-inspired background for her YouTube banner, which speaks to her niche and audience:

Also, note how she’s expertly used the YouTube banner size in her template to her advantage. She’s centered her channel name and tagline to draw the audience’s eye to the key information.

If you want to keep up to date with the hottest design trends, we’ve got a video that tells you everything you need to know:

10. Create your own custom YouTube banner template that you can repurpose

Once you’ve created a YouTube banner that you’re excited to use, why not make it into a template that you can repurpose again and again?

A custom YouTube banner template will come in handy if you want to switch up your banner design periodically. For example, you could simply swap out the background image based on what you’re currently promoting on your channel.

Here’s a YouTube banner with a background image and purple hues that has more of a hip-hip vibe:

youtube banner template

By using the same template, you can keep your channel design fresh while maintaining your recognizable visual branding. You can use the same template again and again to create a whole bunch of cool YouTube banners. Here’s the same banner, now with a live music vibe.

You can use a standard Twitch banner template to update your offline look too. By using a simple gradient like in the example below, you can change the colors up periodically to keep your audience engaged – even when you aren’t streaming.

11. Include a subtle border around your YouTube banner

Minimalistic design projects are very popular lately because they feel so simple and effortless. Designers use exactly what they need to get their message across effectively. No more, and no less.

A simple border will give your minimalist YouTube banner a definable edge and direct the viewer’s eye to the center of your banner.

This approach can also be used to push people towards a call to action, like in the YouTube channel banner template below, or to other social media accounts.

12. Use a banner background image that reflects the theme of your channel

There are literally millions of stock photos out there that you can use. The problem is that these images tend to be vague.

That’s fine for some projects, but not for your YouTube banner.

In fact, a vague image may actually turn off potential viewers. You want to engage them with your YouTube banner, not bore them.

A random sunset or landscape is not going to get someone pumped to check out your videos.

In this example, the background image is perfectly selected for this channel. It’s interesting enough to catch your eye and inform the viewer about the channel. But it doesn’t distract from the channel’s tagline either. The contents adhere to the YouTube banner size restrictions for templates, as well.

13. Position your channel title in the corner of your YouTube banner

As you have probably noticed in this article, many YouTube banners center their text.

But if you want to use a slightly more unconventional layout, try placing your title text in one of the corners of your banner.

Take the Youtube banner example below. The designers used a compelling image that’s hard to miss. The image pulls your eyes, and then you see the title text. This is one way to stand out in a crowded space like YouTube.

14. Include a personalized call to action

People love YouTube because it allows them to connect with their favorite influencers.

These creators also make viewers feel connected by building a community of like-minded fans. So if you have a name for your community or a channel-specific term, include that in your banner call to action.

For example in this YouTube banner template, the viewers are referred to as a “crew.” That sounds a lot more inclusive and personal than just calling them subscribers.

Youtube Banner Template5

Twitch streamers have the opportunity to use their streamer offline banner to advertise social media handles as well as the time of the next stream. Making this information clear on your Twitch offline banner is a great way to ensure your fans never miss a stream.

15. Use simple icons and illustrations

Struggling to find a good idea for your YouTube banner? Try using some icons or illustrations that are related to your topic!

The creators of the YouTube channel art below used icons to quickly tell viewers what their channel is all about.

Even if there was no text in this YouTube banner, you probably could guess the topic. Because humans process images a lot faster than text, you can use YouTube icons to quickly get your message across.

16. Add a color filter to your YouTube banner image

Have you ever found an image with the perfect subject matter for your design, but the color scheme didn’t fit your theme or company branding?

A quick and easy way to solve this problem is to use a color filter, like in the YouTube banner example below. This can personalize the image to fit the mood of your channel, or to match your brand colors.

A color filter can also help your text pop from the background, like in this YouTube banner template.

17. Create a collage of images

Similar to how you can create a banner design using icons, you can also create a collage of images that offer a preview of what to expect on your channel. An easy way to do this is to use stills from your videos.

In order for your design to be cohesive, make sure the images have a similar style, color scheme, and tone. This will make your YouTube banner look more professional, and will also reinforce your channel’s brand, like in this channel banner template.

18. Use drop shadows to give your YouTube banner design depth

“Drop shadow” is a design term used to describe the effect of giving objects in your design shadows. This gives the impression that the objects are raised above the backgrounds.

I know creating a shadow may sound a little daunting to a new designer. But don’t worry, it’s actually very easy with Venngage.

All you really have to do is duplicate the shape, choose a darker color and then position it behind the original one. And this effect can give your YouTube banner design a ton of depth.

Youtube Banner Template4

19. Use a big, easy to read font

It’s important to remember that a large chunk of YouTube viewers use mobile devices. That means that small text is going to be nearly impossible to read.

That’s why I would recommend using a large or bold font on your YouTube banner. This will ensure that your viewers see your channel name or call to action on any screen.

Big, bold fonts are also one of this year’s graphic design trends!youtube banner template

20. Include a brief channel summary in your YouTube banner

Let’s face it, we’re all lazy on social media. We barely read things before moving on.

You can make skimming easy for new viewers by offering a brief description of your channel, like in the YouTube banner template below.

A simple, one-sentence tagline works. Try to make it as direct and compelling as possible, to inspire them to want more, like in this YouTube banner example.

Understanding YouTube Banner Size

Do you remember the days before YouTube?

Scratch that. Do you remember the days before you knew what “YouTube” even meant? It almost feels like another lifetime. And, in a way, it was.

Now, not only do brands need a YouTube brand account, they've also got to have impressive channel art. And that starts by creating the perfect YouTube banner for 2019.

YouTube Banner Size: 2560 x 1140 pixels

  • Recommended Youtube banner image size: 2560 x 1140 pixels
  • Minimum dimensions to upload: 2048 x 1152 pixels
  • Safe area for text and logos: 1546 x 423 pixels
  • Maximum width: 2560 x 423 pixels
  • File size: 6MB maximum

With so many free video editing software tools readily available, anyone can have a YouTube channel. But, to increase views and followers, it's critical to have an impactful banner. This article will explain why, then show you how to do just that!

In addition to creating a successful YouTube brand, building a profile also puts you on the path to eligibility for a YouTube custom URL.

Unless you're ready for banner instructions and best practices for your channel art, let’s get started with the first step: What those pixel sizes actually mean when making your YouTube banner!

Picturing those 2560 x 1440 pixel dimensions may be hard; especially when making sense of maximum widths and minimum upload sizes.

If you are a visual person (like me!) this image will help:

What does the YouTube banner "safe area" mean?

Notice that the “safe area” dimensions are highlighted in orange.

Why do YouTube banner dimensions have a safe area? Well, it’s because your banner (also known as your channel art) will look different across various devices, such as a television, phone, tablet, or computer.

The dark blue box, which makes up your safe area, is where you should put any logos or text. This is the part of your channel art which will be visible on all devices; ensuring no essential information will get cut off.

To understand how your banner images are altered across devices, look at this image. Here is the original picture uploaded to my YouTube channel art:

After you upload an image to YouTube, you will see a preview of how your image appears across various devices:

You can see why it is so important to keep essential dimensions inside of 1546 x 243 pixels.

The desktop and mobile versions look completely different to the original version. Notice that the desktop and phone images have the same height, but the computer image is much wider.

With an understanding of YouTube dimensions, make sure you also film with the correct YouTube video size. Now let’s take a look at ideas and best practices in how to make your channel art.

Having a visually appealing YouTube banner is an essential step when learning how to create a YouTube channel. And, even if you've had a channel for years, it is essential to update your banner to ensure your channel's success.

Why, you ask? Well, let's look at the facts.

Why should I make a YouTube banner?

As of January 2018, there are over 30 million people actively using YouTube each day. That equals 210 million active users a week, or almost the entire population of Florida.

In addition, in 2017 YouTube had the second-highest number of logged-in users at 1.5 billion, with Facebook being the only social media platform to have more.

Youtube-social-media-users Image source: Tech Crunch

As you can see, it is essential to have a presence on YouTube. And, with the rise of technology, thankfully creating video content has become much more user-friendly!

Having a presence on YouTube means having a dynamic YouTube banner. Your banner is the first thing people see when they visit your YouTube channel. It is a reflection of your brand.

Quality channel art represents quality in your brand. For some users, your YouTube channel may be the first touch point they have with your company.

Regardless of how much time you put into creating and sharing videos on YouTube, if your channel doesn’t look professional, neither does your company.

What should I put on my YouTube channel banner?

Your YouTube channel art should be a representation of your brand.

Brands are about feelings. Use an image that correlates with how you want people to feel about your brand. Consider this marketing quote by business and marketing influencer Seth Godin: “People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations, stories, and magic.”

What story will your YouTube banner tell about you?

In addition, think about the content on your YouTube channel. How can you use your banner to demonstrate your content and increase your credibility?

Let’s look at some examples of impactful YouTube banners, and what makes them work.

YouTube banner ideas and examples

For some ideas on what to put on your YouTube banner, take a look at the following examples from five successful YouTube channels.

1.) Dude Perfect

Dude Perfect is an extremely popular YouTube channel, with 31 million subscribers. (Yes, million !) If you click “about” on their channel, Dude Perfect describe their channel as: “5 Best Friends and a Panda. If you like Sports + Comedy, Come join the Dude Perfect team!”

In addition to including their name and logo, this image perfectly matches the description. It’s got the five friends who make the channel, plenty of sports, and that “I believe I can fly” slam dunk soaring through the air displays the comedy. (Okay, I admit, I don’t see a panda. However, it still works!)

youtube-banner-idea

2.) Buzzfeed

This example from Buzzfeed shows how to promote a specific goal or campaign. The banner focuses on a new show Buzzfeed is producing in partnership with NBCUniversal. The channel art isn’t about the entire brand or their channel’s content, but it furthers a specific goal.

The banner design includes a callout to the show’s title and displays the fact the show is made with NBCUniversal, increasing their credibility. It also gives the timing for new episodes.

youtube-channel-art-example

3.) Inc.

Inc.’s YouTube banner shows how to utilize your banner to display what content viewers can expect from your channel.

Each day of the week, there is a new video with a specific topic. Including each of these five topics displays the channel’s value proposition in a way that draws in the viewer. It explains what content both the channel and Inc. provide their audience.

The regular schedule also gives readers a reason to tune in each week.

4.) Expoza Travel

Expoza Travel demonstrates that simplicity works. You can use simple text without needing an experienced designer.

The background is a solid color which will work on any device. The text is white, giving it contrast, and includes a value proposition: With their channel, you will discover the world. And, similar to Inc.'s banner, Expoza Travel informs viewers they have new uploads every week, giving a reason to subscribe to their channel.

5.) Zak George’s Dog Training Revolution

Zak George’s Dog Training Revolution shows how to use a YouTube banner image without any text.

While there are no words, it is still a dynamic image. (With 1.3 Million subscribers, it’s no stretch to say that Zak knows how to be successful on YouTube!)

Not only does it show dogs (what the channel is all about), but it is also high quality. The dogs look happy, building your trust in him and giving a positive emotion to associate with his channel.

When you have a powerful image, literally no graphic design skills are required!

YouTube banner design tips

Looking at those examples, consider the following takeaways, and apply them to your own YouTube banner design. Just like your YouTube thumbnail images, these simple tips will ensure your banner carries the maximum impact.

Keep your YouTube banner simple

Simplicity provides a significant impact. You don’t want your banner to look crowded, especially on small devices.

The more text or and images you include, the more you need to work with an experienced designer. A graphic designer will know how to draw the viewer’s eye to the right place without your design looking cluttered and unprofessional.

Remember your marketing goals

When someone views your YouTube channel, what action do you want them to take? What do you want them to know about you? Perhaps you want them to subscribe to your channel. Or you may want them to go to your website and learn more about your company.

Determine the purpose of your YouTube channel in relation to your team’s goals, then design your banner accordingly. A clear call to action (CTA) is a great way to do this.

It’s okay to have a YouTube banner without text

As long as you are in the “safe space” (as shown on the blue square in the YouTube banner template), it is okay to have text.

However, if you aren’t very design savvy, it is okay to have a banner without any text. As displayed by the banner for Zak George’s Dog Training Revolution, as long as you have a high-quality picture, it works!

In fact, it can even be better. If the layout of your text doesn’t look professional, viewers may keep searching YouTube before they even scroll down to see your videos.

Creating A YouTube Banner

Now that you have some ideas for your YouTube channel art design, let's look at how you can actually create that image.

Where can I find a YouTube banner background image?

To find a picture to start with, there are a number of websites which provide images you can use for free. One of my favorites is Unsplash ; this is where I found the macaroon image used in the example above.

Unsplash is free and full of beautiful images that are easy to source. You can also use the images for commercial purposes . Crediting isn’t required, but it is appreciated.

Pikwizard is a a new website offering free images, just launched in late 2017. They already have over 100,000 high-quality images, 20,000 of which are exclusive to Pikwizard. New images are added every day, and no attribution is required.

Pexels is another site full of dynamic images. They also allow you to use photographs free of charge for any legal purpose, including commercial use.

There are many other free stock image websites. Whichever you use, check the licensing details to ensure you can use the pictures for business purposes.

If you are starting your first YouTube channel, the pictures you find on these websites can inspire you. Type into the search bar words related to your company, product, and brand, then see what resonates with you and your creativity .

How do I create an image with the correct YouTube banner dimensions?

Say you’ve found an image you love on Unsplash, but you want to resize it or add text. Or, perhaps you would like to create your own YouTube channel art from scratch.

Download the free G2 Crowd YouTube banner template in PSD, AI or PNG format as a foundation to create your design. Don’t forget to focus on the safe area! Additional information about each file type is given below.

If you aren’t design savvy and want to back up a step, there are still plenty of options available to you with free or low-priced online platforms. These are designed to be user-friendly for beginners.

Examples include Canva and PicMonkey, the two highest-rated design software providers on G2 Crowd. Canva is free with the option to upgrade your subscription, and Picmonkey offers a free trial.

Once you choose a design platform, create a new design with the custom dimensions recommended by YouTube: 2560 x 1140 pixels. Then, upload your desired image and, if desired, add text. Many of these providers also have sample designs you can customize for your brand.

Now that you’ve got the YouTube banner basics down, and have created your image, let’s look at how you add it to your YouTube channel.

How to add YouTube channel art

Adding your channel art is a simple process. Here, we will walk through the process step-by-step.

Step One

Go to your YouTube profile, and find your icon in the upper right corner. Your icon will be the image you have selected for your Google account.

youtube-channel-art

Click on the icon. A drop-down menu will appear; select “my channel.”

Step Two

Click on the blue button which says “customize channel.”

Step Three

Click on the blue button that says “add channel art.”

Step Four

Upload your YouTube banner image.

Either click and drag the file into the rectangle with the dotted line, or click “select a photo from your computer,” and locate the correct file to upload.

As mentioned previously, make sure your banner image is big enough. If you try to use an image smaller than 2048 x 1152 pixels, YouTube will make you select a different photo.

Step Five

After you have uploaded your image, look at the preview across desktop, television, and mobile devices.

If you want to shift the cropped image (your safe area for mobile devices) click “adjust the crop.”

Click and drag the highlighted box. The “safe area” will display in a window where the colors appear brighter. As shown in this gif, you can also resize the highlighted box.

Once you have selected the area for your YouTube Banner, click “preview on devices.”

Step Six

Once you are happy with the crop, choose the “select” button.

Congratulations - you have uploaded your YouTube banner art!

Your new YouTube banner is now live.

How to Change Your YouTube Banner

If you would like to use a different image for your channel art, simply go to your YouTube Channel and hover over the top right corner.

A small pencil will appear. Click on the pencil, and select “edit channel art.”

You will then be taken back to the same spot you were in at step No.4. You can upload and crop a new image.

Free YouTube Banner Templates

Now that you know how to make and upload your YouTube channel art, it’s time to get started creating your banner. To get started, download your free YouTube banner templates.

YouTube Banner Template - PSD Format

The PSD YouTube Banner Template is designed for use in Adobe Photoshop.

Once you have downloaded the free template, you’ll notice each set of the banner dimensions (such as the safe area) is a separate layer in Photoshop.

Use these layers as your design foundation. You can work on your channel art one layer at a time, or export the individual layers.

There are guides included in the template, which help you design for viewing across multiple devices. Use the guides to plan for scaling and make your design consistent across all branded materials.

From this PSD file, you can save templates to share with your team internally.

Use this PSD template to increase your design efficiency.

YouTube Banner Template - AI Format

The AI YouTube banner template is designed for use in Adobe Illustrator.

The AI file offers the same benefits as the PSD template, including layers, guides, and the ability to create internal templates.

Images created in Illustrator are vector images. This means the image is not pixelated; you can continue expanding the size to an unlimited extent, and it won’t look grainy.

YouTube Banner Template - PNG Format

View the PNG template with any laptop or desktop computer. You do not need specific software the way you do for the PSD and AI files.

Use this template as a visual reference for your YouTube banner dimensions. If you’re using a free design software platform, upload the template to use as your starting point.

If you outsource your company’s design work, you can also share this with your graphic designer.

Your YouTube channel banner (sometimes called channel art) is the first thing potential viewers will see when they land on your YouTube page. So you want to make sure your channel banner reflects your brand and style, lets potential viewers know what they’ll be getting from your channel, and maybe even encourage them to watch or subscribe!

We’ve sourced 100+ amazing free and premium templates for you to get you started, but first, take a look at some key information about YouTube channel art below.

  • The YouTube Banner is the large image at the top of your youtube channel. People most often use this space to establish their channel branding, provide an upload schedule, add a value proposition, and a picture of themselves.

Banner sizing

The same banner will appear on every device people use to access your youtube channel (desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones) However the banner is resized depending on which device it is being viewed on. It’s important to keep this in mind as if you’re not careful, critical information might not appear on certain devices.

YouTube themselves suggest uploading a minimum 2560 x 1440 px image for your channel banner with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a file size no larger than 6 MB. This and other sizing guidelines and tips can be found here

  • 2560 x 1440 px recommended YouTube Banner size
  • 2048 x 1152 px minimum dimensions
  • 1546 x 423 px safe area for any text or logo to appear on all devices
  • 6 MB Maximum file size

How banners display across devices

Here is a graphic that shows how the same youtube channel art will display on different devices.

  • On TVs, the entire 2560 x 1440 px image will be displayed
  • On desktop, the banner displays at 2560 x 423 px
  • On mobile, the banner displays at 1546 x 423 px

Layout youtube template banner

The optimal YouTube channel art banner images size is 2560 x 1440 pixels. However, you should keep your important text and visuals within a safe space of 1546 x 423 pixels to protect it from cropping on different devices.

Once you upload your banner, YouTube shows you how it will be cropped on various devices.

YouTube Banner Template

To create a YouTube banner image (also called YouTube Channel Art), you should start by creating an image that’s 2560 x 1440 pixels. The “safe space” within this for important text, images & info is 1546 x 423 pixels and should be located in the center of the image. See the example below:

YouTube Banner Template by VlogNerd

Click here to download the full size image template.

VlogNerd Tip:

While YouTube allows you to slightly adjust the overall crop if you upload a large image, it does not allow you to tweak the mobile or desktop crop points within the image. The mobile crop will always be at the center of the large image.

How to Upload a YouTube Banner

Uploading a banner to your YouTube channel is easy:

  1. Log in to your channel. To upload your YouTube banner or channel art, log into your YouTube channel account.
  2. Click the camera icon. Click the camera icon in the upper right corner of the banner. (If you’ve never added a banner, you’ll first need to click the “Customize Channel” button, and then you’ll get an “Add Channel Art” button.)
  3. Upload and preview the image. From there, select or drag and drop the banner image file. Once you’ve added it, YouTube will preview how the image will be cropped on various devices.

Adding a Banner to a New Channel:

Click “Customize Channel” then “Add Channel Art” if this is your first time adding a banner.

Click the Camera icon on your existing banner to upload a new photo.

Adding Links & Social Media Profiles to Your YouTube Banner

You may notice that some channels include links to websites and social media profiles within their YouTube banners. You can select up to 5 links to be displayed in the bottom right corner of your channel banner.

Film Theorists YouTube Banner

Example of Banner with Links from The Film Theorists

How to Add Links to Your YouTube Banner:

  1. Click Customize Channel. Once you’ve logged into your Channel, hit the “Customize Channel” button below the banner.Click to Customize YouTube Channel
  2. Head to the “About” Section. Click on “About” on the right side.YouTube Screenshot of About
  3. Add up to 5 Links.  Add links to your website and social media profiles. YouTube will display an icon + text for the first link and icons for the remaining pages.

Add Links to YouTube Channel

VlogNerd Tip:

Be descriptive with your link names. Don’t just say “Instagram” but instead use as “@YourName”. In the example above, The Film Theorists don’t just list “Website” or “Store” but instead say “TheoryWear” so users know exactly where the link leads.

What to Include in Your YouTube Banner

Your YouTube banner should reflect your personality or brand and give viewers a sense of your personality and the types of videos you create.

Consider including:

  • Photo of You: Using photos of yourself can help viewers feel more connected.
  • Your Name: Don’t forget to include your name and/or the name of your channel!
  • Upload Schedule: Let viewers know how often you’re creating content.

YouTube Banner Examples

Here are some great banner examples from top vloggers:

Best Tools for Designing a YouTube Banner

YouTube banners are easy to make. You can get started with the YouTube banner template from VlogNerd, or check out any of these tools:

1. Adobe Photoshop

Best Overall Tool

Cost: $10/month

Using Photoshop will give you the most control over your images and text, allowing you to create the perfect banner for your channel. The downside is that Photoshop costs money and can be challenging to learn. If you’re using Photoshop, you can get started with this template from VlogNerd.

VlogNerd Tip:

We strongly recommend the Classroom in a Book series if you’re getting started learning Photoshop.

2. Adobe Spark

Best for Beginners

Cost: Free

Adobe Spark is a free tool from Adobe that includes cool images and fonts that you can use to make your channel art. You can choose from preset layouts, images, image filters, fonts, and color palettes.

It’s photo filters and controls aren’t great if you’re using photos of people (which we highly recommend doing), and it can be hard to keep your important text and images within the safe space. However, if you’re just getting started and want a professional looking banner, give it a try!

Adobe Spark Screenshot

Runner-up Free Tool: Canva also offers a free tool for creating YouTube banners, but its options are more limited than Adobe’s and there’s a much longer onboarding process once you sign up.

3. Microsoft PowerPoint

Best Software You Probably Already Have on Your Computer

If you’re used to using Microsoft PowerPoint for work or school, you can use it to create your YouTube banner.

  • To get the right size: Go to File -> Page Setup, and select “Custom” from the dropdown menu. Then type “2560 px” as the width and “1440 px” as the height. (PowerPoint will convert this into inches.)
  • To export as an image: Once you’re all set, go to File -> Export and choose “PNG” as the file type. You’ll see the dimensions as 2560 x 1440 px if everything is sized properly.
