How to Replace Alternator Toyota Camry

Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the internet.

Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1AAuto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly; that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.

In this video we're going to remove and reinstall an alternator in this '94 Camry, same as any '94 to'96 Camry and actually same as a few different vehicles that have the liter VW6 such as Solara and Lexus ES

We're going to use the millimeter wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable to loosen up this bolt here. You can also remove this millimeter bolt. First we'll just loosen up this millimeter bolt. Now you want to loosen this millimeter bolt down here. Then as you loosen this millimeter bolt, you'll see my belt start to loosen. Once you have it loosened up, pull the belt off the alternator.

You want to disconnect the leads on the alternator so you pull this rubber boot up and off. Then there's a tab right here that you need to push this way on to unlock it. You push on that tab and pull on the lead. Sorry if I'm in the way here. I wanted to show you that a little better. Here's the tab. Push down with your thumb to unlock it. Push right on the top of the tab right here. Then here's your battery lead, millimeter wrench. Lift that up and off. I just put the nut right back on for safe keeping. Now with the belt out, you want to remove this bolt the rest of the way. Now you can remove this bolt the rest of the way. Now your alternator moves forward and up and out.

Here's our original new alternator from 1AAuto. You see it has the same connections and everything. It's all going to mount in the same. Actually there's nothing wrong with this alternator in this car. I'm just doing the video to show you, so I will reinstall the old one. I just wanted to show you that the new one from 1AAuto, if you need a new alternator, it's got to be the correct one. It's going to bolt in just the same as the original.

To reinstall, put it down in the same way. First we'll put in this bolt. When you put the bolt in here, you want to make sure that this block, the bolt, the tensioning bolt is closer to your alternator. Put the bolt through the block and make sure, like I said, this tension bolt is close to the alternator as opposed to you don't want to put it on you want it positioned you want the block positioned this way. You don't want it positioned this way. You want it positioned that way. Put our bolt in; put your alternator up.

You can kind of see through the slot in the bracket. Then get that bolt in and then you get it hand tight. Okay, put the alternator down. Hold your belt up and on. Now make sure it's on your AC. Make sure it's on your crank pulley. I'm going to speed this up a little bit. Now here I'm just tightening up that tension bolt. You want to have about a- you want to be able to press in the middle of the belt and about a quarter inch of play. That when you know it's tight enough. Now you can tighten up your millimeter bolt here. Now you can tighten up your millimeter bolt here and then lastly plug in your connection. Make sure it clicks. Put that boot back down over. 10 mm nut. Make sure it's nice and firm. It doesn't have to be extremely tight but it has to be good and firm on there. Push your boot back over it and now reconnect your negative battery cable, push it down on, take your millimeter up here.

We hope this helps you out. Brought to you by www.1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the internet. Please feel free to call us toll-free, We're the company that's here for you on the internet and in person.

Toyota Camry Alternator Replacement Cost

The alternator is an essential part of the engine, powering the battery and helping to keep the electrical system functioning properly. If your alternator fails and needs repaired or replaced, you won’t be able to start the engine . If you suspect there may be a problem you should take it to a qualified mechanic immediately.

The alternator replacement cost can be quite high, with prices running between $ and $ for a new alternator . The work itself is quite straightforward, so the cost for labor is normally quite low in comparison to other automotive services . The alternator cost will range from $ to $ just for the part itself! To have a new alternator fitted at a garage you can expect to pay between $ to $ with an average cost in the mid $ range , depending on the part used and the model of car you own.

Alternator Repair Cost Comparison

Repairing your alternator is usually best left to a skilled mechanic, and in some cases they may recommend a full alternator replacement if it’s the best option for your Toyota Camry . Below are some example pricing from some of the leading auto shops in the country, as well as the alternator costs for parts from some leading online retailers.

What Is the Alternator?

The alternator is a major component of the electrical system, working to generate power to charge the battery and supply power to the various electrical systems in your Toyota Camry . It’s attached to the engine of your Toyota Camry and is driven by the serpentine belt , otherwise known as the drive belt .

In general, the alternator shouldn’t require any regular maintenance and will usually run for up to 12 years without the need for any repairs. In the event it fails, your Toyota Camry may run well for a while thanks to the existing charge in the battery – but once the battery energy is depleted, you’ll start to experience some serious issues.

The various electrical systems in the car, such as the lights and the stereo, will deplete the battery over time if your alternator is faulty. When the battery runs out of charge your Toyota Camry will no longer start, and there’s not much you can do other than repair the alternator or have it replaced.

Benefits of Alternator Repair

Without a functioning alternator, your Toyota Camry won’t start, so it’s an essential part of the engine. Having a fully functioning alternator will ensure your battery stays full, all the electrical equipment in your Toyota Camry works properly and allows you to start your Toyota Camry on the first try.

A malfunctioning alternator can cause issues with your lights, leading to reduced visibility at night at potentially a serious accident. It can also cause problems with the indicators, the stereo, the satellite navigation and the various other electrical items we rely on now when we’re driving.

When Should You Have The Alternator Repaired?

You’ll know there’s an issue with your alternator when the battery-shaped warning light on your dashboard comes on while you’re driving . You may notice that when you turn the ignition this light comes on for a short period of time, but it should go off as the engine starts running. If the light remains switched on after the engine has been running for a couple of minutes there’s a good chance you have an issue with the charging system in your Toyota Camry .

While this doesn’t automatically mean it’s an issue with the alternator you should try to get your Toyota Camry to a garage to diagnose the exact cause of the warning. There’s a chance your battery will run down and your Toyota Camry won’t start, which could leave you stranded, so it’s best to have it checked out. It is also a good idea to do this because the alternator repair cost is less expensive then an entirely new unit. Another sign of a potentially faulty alternator is that your headlights may be dim as your Toyota Camry idles, but become brighter as you reach higher RPMs. Again, your mechanic will be able to diagnose the exact cause of the issue so take your Toyota Camry to a garage before it becomes more serious.

When you take your Toyota Camry to the garage they will test the charging system with an AVR test, which will tell them is there’s a weakness in the system or if the system has failed completely. If the charging system isn’t working at all, further tests will be able to determine if the problem is the alternator, the drive belt, an issue with a fuse or a problem with the wiring.

Common alternator issues are the contact rings wearing out, the carbon brushes wearing out or the voltage regulator failing. If the alternator can be rebuilt, these parts are usually removed and replaced with new ones. If the alternator is beyond repair, a new one will be installed.

What Is Done During Alternator Repair?

  1. The first step is to disconnect the battery – failing to do so will likely mean you ground a live wire, which can seriously damage both you and the car
  2. When the battery has been disconnected, the wires should be removed from the back of the alternator
  3. Next, the belt will have to be removed from the pulley, which is the most challenging part of the repair
  4. The tensioner pulley will have to be moved enough to slip the belt off. This can usually be done with a wrench, or some cars have a screw-type tensioner which can be used to release the tension gradually
  5. Once the belt has been removed, remove the bolts connecting the alternator to the bracket and take out the old alternator
  6. To install the new alternator simply reverse the removal steps

How to Save Money on Alternator Repair

A full alternator replacement can be quite costly, depending on the model of car and what part is used by the garage. Aftermarket parts are usually substantially cheaper than an OEM part from a dealership, so it can be more cost effective to go to an independent mechanic.

Some garages will provide rebuilt or reconditioned alternators as an alternative to a brand new one. If looked after properly, an alternator can last upwards of a decade , so it’s not uncommon for them to be taken from older cars and repurposed. This is usually substantially cheaper than buying a new part.

It can be cheaper to have the alternator rebuilt instead of replaced, but this process can take quite a while so many people opt for the straightforward replacement. Rebuilding the alternator yourself can be done, but it’s fairly intricate work and can be quite time intensive. Rebuild kits can be purchased online, usually for under $ 50, if you’re inclined to attempt a rebuild yourself.

The other option is to get a range of quotes from local garages and compare the prices. There will be a difference in price depending on what parts they use and how long they expect the job to take, so you may find a big difference from place to place.

Sample Alternator Repair Costs

Below are a range of sample alternator replacement costs for some of the most popular cars in the country, with expected costs for parts and labor. It should be noted that these prices should be taken as a rough guide to what you might expect to pay, as the cost to replace an alternator will vary depending on the parts used and your location.

How to Replace New Alternator Toyota Camry

Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet.

Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace an alternator. This is a Toyota Camry The procedure is pretty much the same for Toyota Camrys between to

Items you will need include new alternator from 1AAuto.com, millimeter sockets and wrenches, ratchet and extension, and a small pry bar.

Open the hood and secure the hood prop. Your alternator is used to adjust the tension of the serpentine belt, either tighter or looser, and also to slack it enough to be removed.

Using a 14mm socket and ratchet, loosen the bolt where the alternator mounts to the engine. This will allow the alternator to pivot when adjusting the adjuster screw. Using the 12mm socket and ratchet, loosen this bolt into the alternator, and then adjust your adjusting screw down to remove the belt. Turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise to loosen it. You may have to push down on the alternator a little to get it to move.

Once you have enough slack, remove the serpentine belt from the pulleys. You may have to twist it sideways to clear between the pulleys and the body. Put your fingers underneath the cap on the alternator terminal, pop the cap off.

Using a 10 millimeter socket and ratchet, be sure the battery is disconnected, remove the nut from the power terminal of the alternator. Remove the cable and place it off to the side. Push down on the top of the connector at the back of the alternator. Remove the connector.

Using a small flat blade screwdriver, carefully pry out on the retainer for the alternator harness and move it out of the way. Using a 12 millimeter socket, finish removing the bolt on the back of the adjuster on the alternator. With a 14 millimeter socket and ratchet finish removing the bolt at the pivot point of the alternator. Work the alternator out of the pivot bracket either by hand or with the help of small pry bar.

Here we have our old part which we removed from our car and our new part from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, the alternators are identical in size. They have the same pulley. They're both an 80 amp output rating. We have the same connector on the back as well, as the same top post here for our battery cable. You will have to change over the old wire loom bracket retainer if you would like. Your alternator is responsible for charging your battery, as well as being the power source of your vehicle when the engine is running. It doesn't come from your battery once the engine has been started.

Some symptoms of a bad alternator include a noise from a bad baring. If the alternator itself fails, you can overcharge or undercharge the vehicle while driving. You would notice a high or low gauge at that point, a low state of charge in your battery, as well as sulfated plates, or the vehicle is shutting off while driving.

If your old alternator has failed, caused the vehicle's battery to become damaged, shut off while the engine is running; or you have a bad baring, then this brand new replacement alternator from 1A Auto is going to go in direct fit just like your original equipment and fix you up right.

Your new alternator may not come with the wire retention bracket on it. If that's the case, you can use an 8 millimeter socket and ratchet to remove the nut holding the old one on. Take your old retainer and remove the nut from your new alternator in the same location. Install the retainer onto the stud. Reinstall your nut. Now you’re ready to install your new alternator in the vehicle.

Reinstall the pivot portion of the alternator into the pivot bracket here. Start your 14 millimeter bolt. Start the bolt in by hand. Leave it loose just so you won't lose the alignment. It's easier to line up the other side. Line up the block here on the adjusting screw. Send your 12 millimeter bolt through. Start it into the back of your alternator. Now you can bring the rear 14 millimeter bolt back a little tighter. Make sure you don't tighten it all the way, because we still have to install the serpentine belt and adjust it properly.

Reinstall the wire harness retainer onto the bracket that we switched over from the old alternator. Reconnect the plug at the back with the clip facing up. Install the terminal wire with the tabs facing down. Reinstall the 10 millimeter nut. Tighten it down with a socket and ratchet. Reinstall the cover.

The serpentine belt will be installed around the crank pulley, over top of the alternator pulley, and under the AC compressor. Be sure that the belt is seated properly onto the grooves of each pulley. Using a 12 millimeter socket and ratchet, turn the tension bolt clockwise to add tension to the belt. Lock down the adjusting block with the same 12 millimeter. Using a 14 millimeter socket and ratchet, clamp down the pivot point bolt.

Reinstall the negative batter terminal. Tighten it down with your 10 millimeter wrench. Start the vehicle and check that the belt does not squeal or slip.

Thanks for tuning in. We hope this video helped you out. Next time you need parts for your car, please visit 1AAuto.com. Also check out our other helpful how-to and diagnosis videos.

How to Replace Alternator 94-01 Toyota Camry
Electrical problem
Toyota Camry 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi all. I am having a problem with my car. At first, when I tried to start it, no luck. Figured it was just a weak battery. I then had it jump started. It help up for the day.

After that, I bought a brand new battery. It stared the car fine for a month. After that, it drained overnight.

I then figured it was a bad alternator. Got that replaced, and then up to this point, the new alternator is not even able to keep the car running! Basically the car would be running off of the battery's charge, and shut down after draining it. A running engine should not need a battery at all, but in my case, it pulls juice from the battery.

My conclusion is that the something is keeping the alternator from flowing it's generated power to keep the engine running.

What could it be? Wire problems? Fuse? Rotor/field coil (whatever that is)?

Please help. I am so lost.
