More items at Dollar Tree will cost more than $1 as retailer grows selection, combats inflation

Better bring more than a dollar the next time you go shopping at Dollar Tree.

The discount retailer plans to transform more of its locations into Dollar Tree Plus stores with products also priced at $3 and $5. And standard Dollar Tree stores will also begin testing price points above $1.

The Chesapeake, Virginia-headquartered company, which has more than 15,800 Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree Canada stores across 48 states and five Canadian provinces, began testing some prices above $1 two years ago.

Based "on positive customer reaction" to its Dollar Tree Plus stores – where products at higher price points have been tested – the company said Tuesday it plans to have 500 Dollar Tree Plus stores by the end of 2021 and another 1,500 next year. At least 5,000 Dollar Tree Plus stores are expected by the end of 2024.

Products priced at $3 and $5 will be a wide variety of discretionary products including arts and crafts, sports, home decor, apparel, and holiday and seasonal items, the company says.

Discount retailer Dollar Tree plans to also start selling products priced at $3 and $5 at more of its stores.

“For decades, our customers have enjoyed the ‘thrill-of-the-hunt’ for value at one dollar – and we remain committed to that core proposition – but many are telling us that they also want a broader product assortment when they come to shop," Dollar Tree CEO and president Michael Witynski said in a statement. "We believe testing additional price points above $1 for Dollar Tree product will enable us over time to expand our assortments, introduce new products and meet more of our customers’ everyday needs.”

Shares of Dollar Tree rose 16% Wednesday to more than $100; the company's stock is down 6% for the year.

The company's $1 price point for most products has been especially challenged with supply chain issues and "higher freight costs and other inflationary pressures," Witynski said during the company's second quarter earnings call last month.

Dollar Tree, which acquired rival Family Dollar for $9.2 billion in 2015, will also be expanding its combo stores, which share Dollar Tree and Family Dollar branding.  Combo stores will expand from the current 105 to more than 500 by the end of 2022, and up to 3,000 over the next several years, the company said.

Currently, the company operates more than 7,900 Dollar Tree stores.

“Our brand promise is that customers get great value for what they spend at Dollar Tree," Witynski said. "We will continue to be fiercely protective of that promise, regardless of the price point, whether it is $1.00, $1.25, $1.50.”

Dollar Tree announces new locations including plan for Family Dollar combination stores

PHILADELPHIA -- Dollar Tree said Wednesday that it will open 600 new stores this year, continuing dollar store chains' torrid growth across the United States.

The announcement comes as the pandemic has taken a toll on many retailers and forced thousands of stores to close. But dollar stores have surged as economically-strapped customers seek out bargains on food, household essentials and other items. Dollar Tree said Wednesday that sales at stores open for at least one year increased 4.9% during the 13 weeks ending Jan. 30, compared with the same stretch a year ago.

The company, which also owns the Family Dollar chain, will open 400 Dollar Tree stores and 200 Family Dollar stores this year. The two chains combined have nearly 15,700 US locations and last year opened around 400 stores.

Dollar Tree has a treasure hunt-like atmosphere in stores and caters to suburban, middle-income shoppers. It carries primarily seasonal goods, toys, stationary, home decor, kitchenware, and party items. Family Dollar is tailored to lower-income shoppers in rural and urban areas, and stocks more food and household basics than Dollar Tree.

All products at Dollar Tree sell for $1, although the chain is testing out a new initiative to sell select products from $1 to $5. Family Dollar sells most of its merchandise at various prices under $10.

New "combination" stores coming
Dollar Tree has lagged rival Dollar General in recent years. Dollar General has been opening roughly 1,000 stores a year and now has upwards of 16,000 US locations. The company caters mainly to low-and-middle-income customers in rural and suburban areas.

Dollar Tree announced a plan Wednesday to crack the rural market by opening 50 new "combination stores" that feature elements of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar outlets and sell a mix of merchandise - Dollar Tree's typical $1 seasonal items plus Family Dollar's food and essentials for more than $1.

The concept is targeted at towns with 3,000 to 4,000 people, and Dollar Tree sees an opportunity to open around 3,000 of these stores.

Analysts say the new concept combines the appeal of both chains into one store.

"Dollar Tree generally has a better customer perception so it helps to brand the store with that banner, but the markets the company is targeting seem best served by Family Dollar," Joseph Feldman, analyst at Telsey Advisory Group, said in an email. "The small markets Dollar Tree is targeting are underserved, which is why they are going after them."

Dollar General, meanwhile, is testing a new store concept of its own: Popshelf. The new stores feature a range of home and beauty goods, the majority of which will be priced around $5. Popshelf stores target women in suburban areas that earn between $50,000 and $125,000 a year.

Family Dollar is an American variety store chain. With over 8,000 locations in all states except Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington, it was the second largest retailer of its type in the United States until it was acquired by Dollar Tree in 2015 and its headquarters operations were moved from Matthews, a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, to Chesapeake, a suburb of Norfolk, Virginia.[2]

In June 2014, activist investor and major shareholder[3]Carl Icahn demanded that Family Dollar be immediately put up for sale.[4]

On July 28, 2014, Dollar Tree announced that it would buy Family Dollar for $8.5 billion.[5][6] The sale delivered a windfall to the company's biggest shareholder Carl Icahn, who acquired his 9.4 percent stake in June 2014.[7] On January 22, 2015, Family Dollar shareholders approved the Dollar Tree bid.[8]

Family Dollar was founded in 1959 by Leon Levine, a 21-year-old entrepreneur.[9] In November of that year, the company's first store was opened, in Charlotte, North Carolina.[10] In 1961, their first store in South Carolina opened, followed by stores in Georgia and Virginia, which were opened in 1962 and 1965, respectively. During the 1960s, the store company was largely a southern United States operation. By 1969, there were fifty stores in Charlotte alone.

The 1970s were growing years for the store chain. In 1970, Family Dollar's stock went public for the first time, at $14.50 per share.[11] In 1971, the chain's 100th store opened, followed by their 200th in 1974 and their 300th in 1978. Also in 1974, a distribution center was opened in Matthews, North Carolina. In 1979, Family Dollar stock began trading at the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1981, the chain's 400th store was opened, followed by a 500th store in 1982 and a 700th in 1983. The 1980s saw expansion at a wider scale for the company, and by 1989, 1,500 stores were operating.

The 1990s saw the pace of expansion slow down compared to the 1980s, with 1,000 stores opened. The company opened distribution centers in West Memphis, Arkansas; Front Royal, Virginia and Duncan, Oklahoma. Since 2000, the pace of growth increased significantly, with the addition of about 3,500 new stores, and new distribution centers opening in Morehead, Kentucky; Maquoketa, Iowa; Odessa, Texas; Marianna, Florida; and Rome, New York.

In 2001, Family Dollar joined the S&P 500stock market index.[12] In 2002, the company joined the Fortune 500 list of largest publicly held companies.[13]

When Leon Levine retired in 2003, his son Howard R. Levine succeeded him as Chairman and CEO, keeping this multibillion-dollar company in the family.

In March 2005, Family Dollar restated the company's fiscal 2000 to fiscal 2004 earnings per share downward by 2 cents to 3 cents a year, to correct lease-accounting issues.[14]

As of August 2011, there were 7,000 stores in 44 states.[15] According to their website in 2005, Family Dollar opened 500 new stores, 350 more in 2006, and an additional 300 in 2007. According to the Company's 2013 Corporate Profile in 2010, Family Dollar opened 200 new stores, 300 more in 2011, 475 in 2012, and an additional 500 in 2013. On October 3, 2012, Family Dollar said they will open 500 stores in 2013.[16] The next day, Family Dollar partnered with Healthways.[17] Family Dollar operates 11 distribution centers - the latest of which opened in St. George, Utah on October 16, 2013.[18]

Selling pressure[edit]

In March 2011, Family Dollar rejected a takeover offer by Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management reportedly between $55 and $60 a share.[19]

On June 6, 2014, activist investor Carl Icahn disclosed that his firm, Icahn Enterprises, held a 9.4% stake in Family Dollar.[3][20] On June 19, 2014, Icahn demanded in an open letter that Family Dollar be put up for sale immediately.[2][4]Goldman Sachs and other analysts had identified a number of potential buyers.[21][22]

As of June 19, 2014, 22% of Family Dollar's shares were controlled by activist investors.[2]

Acquisition by Dollar Tree[edit]

On July 28, 2014, Dollar Tree announced that it would acquire Family Dollar for $74.50 per share, a deal valuing Family Dollar at $8.5 billion, and that Dollar Tree would also assume $1 billion in debt currently owed by Family Dollar, for a total of $9.5 billion.[5][23] Dollar Tree CEO Bob Sasser said that Family Dollar CEO Howard R. Levine will remain with the company following the merger and will be appointed to Dollar Tree's board of directors.[6]Dollar General entered the bidding, shortly thereafter, surpassing Dollar Tree's offer on August 18, 2014,[24] $78.50 a share compared to Dollar Tree's offer of $74.50 a share. The enterprise value of the Dollar General bid was $9.7 billion compared to that of Dollar Tree of $9.2 billion, while the quantum return to shareholders was varying as the stock and cash deal valuation was subjected to fluctuations of price of the competing bidders stock. On August 20, 2014, Family Dollar rejected the Dollar General bid, saying it was not a matter of price, but concerns over antitrust issues that had convinced the company and its advisers that the deal could not be concluded on the terms proposed.[7] Days after, Dollar General CEO Rick Dreiling sent a letter to the Family Dollar board of directors claiming that Levine rejected merger requests to protect his job.[25] Levine, in a statement, said the Family Dollar board had been analyzing potential antitrust issues that could arise from doing a deal with Dollar General since the start of the year, and that was the reason it was not accepting the Dollar General bid.[7]

On January 22, 2015, Family Dollar shareholders approved the Dollar Tree bid.[8]

Several stores were required to be sold as a condition of the sale. Sycamore Partners acquired the stores in 2014 under the corporate name Dollar Express. The stores continued to operate under the Family Dollar name. In 2017, Dollar General acquired Dollar Express and converted the stores.[26]

As a result of Family Dollar's sale to Dollar Tree, some Family Dollar stores have opened in the same plaza, and at times even next door to Dollar Tree locations.[27] On March 6, 2019, the retailer announced that it will close up to 400 stores nationwide due to heavy pressure from an activist investor. Most store locations were either shut down entirely or replaced with Dollar Tree stores.[28]

The company has deployed a newer store format known as "H2" in new and renovated locations, which have a larger focus on groceries and incorporate Dollar Tree merchandise.[29] The company has also deployed co-branded Family Dollar/Dollar Tree stores in smaller markets.[30]

‘Staff Quit. Y’all Be Easy’: Employees At Family Dollar In Garfield Quit In Protest

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A message was posted on the door of the Family Dollar in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood.

“Staff quit. Y’all be easy,” the note read.

The sign wasn’t on the door when KDKA showed up on Wednesday, and the store was open with one only worker inside manning the registers. She said she was called in to cover from the McKees Rocks store, but then she locked the doors up and went home, which caused quite a stir in the neighborhood.

“I’m very upset,” said customer Emma Porco. “During the past several months, it’s just been on a steady decline.”

Garfield resident Dodi Byrne went to Family Dollar on Penn Avenue on Tuesday, only to find the note on the door.

KDKA’s Amy Wadas: What went through your mind when you saw the sign yesterday?

Byrne: Oh no, not again.

“It’s been kind of shaky where it’s hit or miss if they’re going to be open when you come over because they’ll say they don’t have enough staffing,” Byrne added.

Former manager Heather Berry was one of the workers who walked off the job.

“There are no employees,” said Berry. “One-hundred-five hours every week. It’s too much, and he wanted me to be here by myself running two registers. This is a high-volume store.”

The “he” Berry is talking about is her district manager. She said she was going to wait out her two weeks’ notice but decided she couldn’t take it anymore due to a lack of staffing and mistreatment. Berry said she and the store’s only other worker quit.

“It was about 102 degrees in there. When we got the storm the other day, the power went out and they wanted me to hold tight until the power came back on. The power didn’t come back on until noon the next day,” said Berry. “This company is very hard to work for.”

KDKA reached out to Family Dollar’s corporate office for a comment on the situation. They sent KDKA a statement saying, “Our Garfield neighborhood store is open for business. We are not able to comment on the employment actions or status of individuals out of respect for their privacy.”
