27 Blonde Hair Color Ideas, from Golden to Caramel

How to Maintain Blonde Hair

While blonde is one of the most covetable hair colors around, it’s also the hardest to keep healthy-looking and bright. To neutralize brassy tones, it’s crucial to commit to blonde hair care at home. Help your clients by recommending products that enhance the shade and condition of their locks, so they can enjoy salon-fresh, luminous color for longer. Here are their go-to heroes…

1. Fusion for Moisture

Healthy hair is shiny hair. That’s why we suggest introducing the Fusion collection to your client’s blonde care routine, as it works deep down to repair and recover the hair fiber. The Intense Repair Shampoo will protect lightened and colored locks from hair breakage, while the Intense Repair Mask will leave mid-lengths and ends feeling soft, nourished and more manageable.

2. INVIGO Cool Blonde for Balance

Most blondes need a purple shampoo in their kit. Suggest INVIGO Cool Blonde Color Refreshing Shampoo, which offers a hint of a violet tint to neutralize brassy tones and refresh their hue. All your client has to do is lather up in the shower whenever hair starts to look dull, then leave it on for five minutes and rinse. They can follow with the Fusion Mask for moisture.

3. Thermal Image for Protection

Because heat is one of the key culprits of brassy hair, EIMI Thermal Image is a must. It protects locks from heat up to 220°C, and creates a frizz-free, shiny finish. Suggest clients mist it through from root to tip before blow-drying or tonging strands.

4. Glam Mist for Shine

The finishing touch that every blonde needs is EIMI Glam Mist. Sprayed directly onto just-styled hair, it gives their lightened locks a hint of shimmer that lasts until the next wash.

The Recipe for the Perfect Vanilla Blonde

Creating beautifully blended vanilla blondes and chocolate brunettes is difficult to master, but with the right products, talent and experience, artists can achieve some yummy results.

Austin, Texas-based colorist Ellie Toia is known for her swoon-worthy color transformations. Everything she posts to her xoxo_balayage Instagram page gives us major hair envy, so we just had to figure out what she uses as her recipe for success.

The answer? The right ingredients! Toia uses Milk_Shake’s lighteners and toners, which counteract residual warm tones.

The brand’s Decologic Level-9 High-Lift Powder is suitable for all lightening techniques and creates an intense lift of up to nine levels. The Decologic Clay Balayage Lightener is suitable for all freehand techniques.

“The clay lightener goes on smoothly and gives an amazing and even lift up to four levels,” Toia says. “Its consistency is perfect. It doesn’t expand, and it isn’t too runny.”

The Decologic Blue Lightening Powder is dust-free and easy to blend. It lifts up to six levels while reducing brassiness. It is designed to create a consistent moisture level during application.

In addition to color, Milk_Shake’s toners, Silver Shine Shampoo and Silver Shine Whipped Cream work to finish and maintain hair color brilliance. The toners are available in Platinum, Light Ash, Smoky Grey, Amethyst and White.

Here, Toia creates the perfect vanilla blonde:

Starting: Natural level 7.

  1. Toia balayaged ribbons in a halo formation (higher around the front and lower in the back) using the Decologic Clay Balayage Lightener from Milk_Shake with 30vol.
  2. She lifted to a pale level 9. I
  3. Toia then used Milk_Shake’s Light Ash Gel Toner and processed for 20 minutes. I
  4. She brushed her client’s hair out and used the Whipped Cream Styling Mousse.
  5. She power dried her client and then sectioned her hair and used a Babyliss Pro 1 1/4 curling iron and curled all of the curls away from her face.

With beach days and Summer Fridays long behind us, it may seem like fall is too late to go blonde. But just because you missed the chance for naturally sun-kissed hair doesn't mean you have to wait until next year to embrace the lighter side. Enter Vanilla Chai, a perfect fall/winter mix of blonde and brunette.

Vanilla Chai is a cool ash blonde shade first coined by Amy McManus, aka Instagram's @camouflageandbalayage. Just like a spicy chai tea with a hint of sweet vanilla, this color is the best of both worlds: light while still allowing for dark roots, and bright while cool enough for fall.

McManus tells Allure that she created the look over four sessions with her client Bailey, who wanted a rooted blonde look for her wedding day. "She has a dark blonde base to begin with and with each session we've added more dimension and brightness using balayage only," McManus says. At this fourth and final session, she combined two blonde shades to get extra lift and create "bright icy pieces" that mixed well with the softer blondes from previous sessions. Their goal was icy blonde with pops of brightness and a "believable" blonde finish. Mission accomplished. We can see why her client chose this look for a fall wedding — it'll pair well with a white dress and a bouquet of autumnal blooms. But for the rest of us who aren't getting married this month, it's a down-to-earth look that (best of all) won't require re-painting too soon, thanks to the dark roots.

This shade is best achieved on anyone with naturally light brown or dark blonde hair, McManus says. She also points out that balayage only worked on Bailey because her hair was naturally dark blonde. If you have hair from medium to dark brown, you'll need to ask your colorist for foils.
