About the Location
The Island Breeze Luau is located adjacent to the Ahu'ena Heiau on land traditionally known as Kamakahonu (eye of the turtle). Kamakahonu has been called one of the most historical sites in all of Hawaii. It was here that Kamehameha the Great spent his last years and where he eventually died. It was the location of the feast that was held to mark the overthrow of the kapu system, that changed Hawai'i forever. The first missionaries landed at Kamahonu Bay in 1820. Across the bay is Hulihe’e Palace, built by 1838 Hawai’i’s governor, John Adams Kuakini. It was also here that the young prince Leleihoku II enjoyed the calm of Kona before his death and it was here that his brother King Kalakaua maintained a residence and made a boathouse of a historic building.
Island Breeze Productions is a proud supporter of the Ahuʻena Heiau Inc. and a portion of ticket sales goes to the restoration of this precious historical site.
