Dragon Ball: Every Android Created By Dr. Gero From Weakest To Most Powerful, Ranked
RELATED: Dragon Ball Z: All Of Future Trunks’ Fights, Ranked
It’s fitting, then, that the darkest story arc in Dragon Ball Z has deep ties to the Red Ribbon Army arc. Seeking revenge against Goku, Dr. Gero spends years building an army of Artificial Humans– Androids– to punish Goku with. Not all androids are created equal, with more than a few defects on the way to Cell, but Dr. Gero’s creations stand out as some of the most intimidating characters in Dragon Ball Z.
8 Android 8
The very first Red Ribbon Android introduced in the series, Dr. Gero wasn’t an established character back in the original Dragon Ball. As a result, Android 8, otherwise known as Eighter or Hatchan, never makes mention of any creator. The anime does feature a filler character by the name of Dr. Frappe, but this just causes continuity issues down the road.
Worth noting, while Android 8 is very strong, he hates violence much in the same way Android 16 will come to hate violence. Unlike 16, however, Eighter never has to sacrifice his life and instead is allowed to live peacefully in Jingle Village with Suno. Ain’t that the life?
7 Android 19
Introduced alongside Dr. Gero (as Android 20) early on in the Cell arc, Android 19 is the earliest example we as an audience have of the Artificial Humans in action. At first glance, it seems like Goku has everything in control, but he doesn’t know 19 can absorb energy. Paired with the fact he’s suffering from the Heart Virus and Goku basically hands 19 the fight.
After that, though, Android 19 is almost immediately defeated Vegeta. These are two of the best fights in the Cell arc if nothing else, but Android 19 himself is hardly the strongest of Dr. Gero’s Androids, though that mainly stems from him being the first to actually fight. The laws of Dragon Ball can be cruel like that.
6 Androids 14 & 15
Movie 7 seems to operate under the assumption that 17 and 18 were defeated in a timeline where Cell doesn’t appear for whatever reason. Not just that, it seems as though Goku hasn’t gotten the Heart Virus. Regardless of the logistics behind the film, movie 7 more or less retreads the early Cell arc, even featuring stand-ins for 17 and 18.
RELATED: Dragon Ball Z: Every Main Character Death In Order
Androids 14 and 15 are basically bland versions of their main canon counterparts. They serve the exact same purpose as they do, even losing their lives to help the real villain become complete. Needless to say, they’re probably around as strong as 17 and 18 were in the main canon– if not weaker considering how comparatively easy they’re defeated.
5 Android 13
The “Cell” to Androids 14 and 15’s “Androids 17” and “18,” Android 13 is certainly a strong character– strong enough where Goku needs the Genki Dama to kill him– but he’s still placed in a rather awkward spot in the series. It’s clear Android 13 is supposed to be stronger than Androids 17 and 18, but what of 16?
Android 16 and Cell had already fought in the manga by the time movie 7 released in July of 1992, but this hadn’t occurred in the anime yet, nor was it close to. As the anime movies tend to fall in line with where the characters’ strengths are in the anime, Android 13 was definitely stronger than 17 & 18, while Super 13 was almost certainly weaker than 16. Genki Dama or not.
4 Android 16
Despite being built before Androids 17 and 18, Android 16 is considerably stronger than his successor Artificial Humans. In the original series, it’s never explained why 16 is so much stronger, but it’s implied there’s something “wrong” with him given his personality. Regardless, 16 doesn’t like violence so he doesn’t fight much in the Cell arc.
That said, when Cell threatens 17 and 18’s lives, Android 16 steps in and gives Imperfect Cell quite the beating. He’s strong enough where he realistically could have beaten Cell even if he ultimately didn’t. Android 16 dies before he gets to show off any more of his power, but his one fight against Cell is an excellent demonstration of what the Android is capable of.
Although Cell doesn’t follow the same naming conventions as his predecessors, nor was he physically completed by Dr. Gero, he was intended as the doctor’s fail safe– collecting data in the background to create the perfect Artificial Human. Like with Android 13, Cell needs to absorb two other Artificial Humans to tap into his full power.

Interestingly, it seems as though the base Cell is actually weaker than Androids 16 through 18, needing to drink quite a lot of people before having the strength necessary to overwhelm the siblings. By the time Cell reaches his Super Perfect form, he’s around Super Saiyan 2 Gohan’s level and could have likely gotten even stronger.
2 Android 18
Android 18 has always been one of Dragon Ball’s strongest characters, but it’s not something the series lingers or comments on often. That said, it only makes it all the more memorable when 18 actually gets to participate in the action. The Buu arc very briefly pivots her into a more supporting role, even having her beat Goten & Trunks in a tournament fight, but it’s Super that’s done wonders for her character.
The Universe Survival arc in particular gave 18 quite a lot to do, with the anime even letting her finish off Ribrianne in one of the tournament’s best fights. Only getting stronger with an infinite amount of stamina to tap into, 18 is an asset whenever she’s around.
1 Android 17
Even though Android 17 was introduced as the stronger of the two Androids, only 18 actually got to join the main cast heading into the Buu arc. 17 was relegated to a cameo Toriyama originally intended for Lunch. Dragon Ball GT notably featured him in the role of Super 17, a fairly powerful villain.
Super’s also brought Android 17 back into the fold, but it does a much better job than GT did, having 17 serve as one of the main characters in the Universe Survival arc, strong enough to last until the very end and help Goku & Freeza defeat Jiren. Him and 18 are both back in the Moro arc lending the Earth a hand, as well. All signs point to 17 sticking around, and him remaining one of Dragon Ball’s strongest heroes.

|~ Android 19 to Vegeta|
Android 19 is an antagonist in Dragon Ball and the nineteenth Android created by Dr. Gero to kill Son Goku. Unlike all the other Androids, he seems to only exist in the present timeline. He was a major antagonist in the Android Saga of Dragon Ball Z and a minor antagonist in the Super 17 Saga of Dragon Ball GT.
He was voiced by Yukitoshi Hori in Japanese and Todd Haberkorn in English.
Android 19 has chalk-white skin and is extremely fat, with a high-pitched voice. Like Android 20, he can absorb energy through small orb devices on his hands.
He also bears a striking resemblance to Majin Buu in some ways. Most notably his obese figure and face.
Android 19 is fiercely loyal toward his creator, Dr. Gero. He relies on absorbing Ki from people as he has no remorse when he followed Dr. Gero's order for world domination and destroy Goku and the Z-Fighters for revenge. When lost his hands, he revealed to be a coward when running away from Vegeta.
Dragon Ball Z
Dr. Gero was made into Android Human 20 by #19. Together, the two androids attacked a city where they encountered most of the Z Fighters. #19 fought Son Goku, who, with his Super Saiyan powers, had the advantage, but when Goku shot a Kamehameha wave at #19, the android absorbed it and increased his power. He then beat up Goku, who then was attacked by a heart virus. #19 beat Goku up while he was unable to fight back. He then sits on top of Goku (severely injured him with his immense weight and pinned him down by stepping his arms with his feets) and began draining his energy when suddenly, Vegeta attacked him. As Yamcha got Goku back to his house to take the medicine for the virus, Vegeta transformed into a Super Saiyan, revealing for the first time that he had achieved this transformation.
Vegeta fought #19 and beat him up. #19 grabbed Vegeta's arms and began draining energy from him, but Vegeta, despite losing a bit of energy, tore #19's hands off. From #19's reaction, Vegeta confirmed a question he had asked earlier, that androids do experience fear. #19 tried to run, but Vegeta destroyed him with a Big Bang attack, leaving only his lifeless head. Trunks saw the head when he returned from the future to fight the androids, and did not recognize him.
Dragon Ball GT
In Dragon Ball GT, Android 19 returned from Hell along with several other dead villains. He was killed when Trunks and Son Goten blew him up with an energy blast into the alley, again leaving only his head, which ironically, was the same way he died the first time. Even more ironic, one of the people who killed him was Trunks; the son of his first killer.
In TeamFourStar's Dragon Ball Z Abridged series, 19 was portrayed as Dr. Gero's incompetent sidekick, who was supposedly working on a Windows 8 engine. In his first appearance, he and Gero walk around the city attacking anyone they see, being referred to as an "inconspicuous man and mime" by everyone they attack. When they first see Yamcha, 19 states that there is a 99% percent chance he is Son Goku (later stating that he is 85% percent sure upon viewing his scar.) and the two attack and nearly kill him. When confronted by the rest of the Z fighters, Piccolo leads them to a life less desert so they can battle. 19 begins to load his Murder.ExE program so he can fight, but the program doesn't load properly and he not only sends a report about this (which Gero told him not to do), but he is also mercilessly pummeled by Goku. While being repeatedly punched by Goku, he gets on Gero's last nerve, who orders him to work properly or he will "SHOVE MY BOOT UP. YOUR.ASS!" 19's Murder.ExE program finally starts to work, and to make matters worse, Goku has a heart attack due to high cholesterol. When he's about to kill Goku, Vegeta shows up and transforms into his Super Saiyan form. 19 activates his "self destruct sequence" when he attacks Vegeta, who quickly finishes him off, all while making jokes about the android's weight. After his body is destroyed, Krillin comically throws a senzu bean at his head, leading to Vegeta throwing a dog biscuit at him as well, similar in fashion to when he did that to Guldo. Later on, Trunks finds his head and mistakes him for an over weight, robotic Choutzu, only to realize that he is a new android.
Powers and Abilities
Android 19's powers are similar to the other androids. He is able to fly, generate energy based attacks, and absorb power levels with the red orbs on his palms. He is also much stronger than any non ki-user.
His Power Level is listed at 10,000,000 in Scouter Battle Kamehameha. This means Goku would have likely killed him if not for the heart virus.
Android #19 can absorb Ki Energy (and possibly other forms of energy) through the red pulsars in his hands. When he does, he can add the Ki Supply to his own. This amplifies his Superhuman Abilities as shown when he became stronger than Goku after absorbing his energy. It appears, however, that he cannot absorb Ki from particularly powerful beings with Power Levels much higher than his own as shown when he lost against Vegeta who let him asborb some of his KI on purpose. However, it's possible that Vegeta lowered his power level to make his powers useless.
Full Power Energy Cannon
A powerful Full Power Energy Wave attack used also by Android #20. Using this, 19 can destroy entire cities.
A team attack used along with Pui Pui. They face back to back and #19 uses a Full Power Energy Cannon and Pui Pui uses a Full Power Energy Wave.
A rush attack. It is a very fast combo consisting of a punch across the face, an elbow to the back, a knee to the midsection, and a powerful Double Axe Handle to the midsection, inflicting a high amount of damage. This is how he defeated Goku while he was weakened by the heart virus.

Jinzōningen Jū Kyū-Gō
Artificial Human No. 19
Android 19 (人造人間１９号,Jinzōningen Jū Kyū-Gō, lit. "Artificial Human No. 19") is Dr. Gero's nineteenth creation, designed to serve Gero's vendetta against Goku, who overthrew the Red Ribbon Army as a child.
He is the secondary antagonist of the Androids Saga.
Android 19's appearance consists of completely white skin, two dangling earrings, extra large orange pants, an extra large banana white strap-on vest, a broad red sash, and an orange pointed hat with a Red Ribbon Army logo on the front. He is overweight and has pointed, light blue cold eyes. Underneath his hat is a domed glass cranium, similar to that of Android 20 but with a pinkish color and an entirely mechanical brain housed inside.
Out of all of Dr. Gero's Androids, 19 is by far Dr. Gero's most loyal and obedient creation. He is committed to Dr. Gero's quest for revenge against Goku and was very eager to face Goku himself. He is also apparently very intelligent as he was able to convert his creator Dr. Gero into Android 20, an energy absorption model like himself. He is quite confident in his abilities and appears to take pleasure in his opponent's suffering such as when Goku was weakened by his Heart Virus. However he relies too much on the data gathered by Dr. Gero's Remote tracking device which only follows Goku and the Z Fighters' battles of the Vegeta Saga and Trunks Saga, leaving 19 overconfident after defeating Super Saiyan Goku who 19 was only able to defeat due to the Heart Virus and unprepared when facing Super Saiyan Vegeta who had been training at 450 times the Earth's gravity for 3 years in preparation for fighting the Androids, 19 underestimated Vegeta believing that he could take on Vegeta due to the data Dr. Gero had gathered on the Saiyan prince during the Saiyan conflict. Despite being a machine, he is shown to possess the ability to feel fear and even cowardly attempts to flee out of fear of Super Saiyan Vegeta.
Android 19 is the final android designed by Dr. Gero to be created exclusively from synthetic technology (although in some alternate timelines this respect goes to Android 16). The android was modeled after a doll decorating the command center of an enemy base, which Dr. Gero brought home as a trophy. When Dr. Gero decided to turn himself into Android 20 in order to become immortal, his brain was transplanted into his android body by Android 19.
Dragon Ball Z

Accompanied by Android 20 (the cyberneticized Dr. Gero), Android 19 appears during an assault on an island nine miles southwest of South City. Since they are mechanical beings, with no ki, the Dragon Team are unable to sense their presence, which culminates in Yamcha's tragic run-in with the pair. Gero grips onto Yamcha's face and lifts him off of the ground. As his energy is sapped through Gero's gripping hand, Gero uses his other hand to impale Yamcha's chest. Detecting that Yamcha's energy is dropping fast, the Z fighters manage to find him along with the two Androids.
"You know some of my moves, but I know all of your moves Vegeta. Oh, yes, Dr. Gero studied you very thoroughly."
After Android 20 destroys half of the city and Goku requests to fight somewhere else, Android 19 challenges Goku who proceeds to transform into Super Saiyan, shifting the fight in his own favor. Shortly after though, the heart virus foretold by Future Trunks begins affecting Goku later than expected, who collapses and is powerless against Android 19's attempt at energy absorption. Suddenly, before Android 19 could sap the last of his energy, he is sent flying aside by a surprise kick to the face. Fuming, 19 rises and looks upon his assailant, revealed to be Vegeta. Believing Vegeta is of roughly the same power level as Goku, the android arrogantly challenges the Saiyan, but, along with everyone else present, is shocked when Vegeta transforms into a Super Saiyan as well.
Android 19 battles Vegeta, but with Vegeta's mercilessness, Android 19 is beaten badly by the Saiyan prince until he finally grabs hold of Vegeta's arms, claiming that he will not release hold of Vegeta until he has sapped dry all of his energy. This prompts Vegeta to prop his feet onto Android 19's face, before slowly tearing off his arms. Now terrified, Android 19 desperately attempts to make an escape, however, Vegeta blasts him with his Big Bang Attack, and Android 19's fate is made clear when from the explosion emerges his smoking head. Shortly after the battle, Future Trunks arrives at where the battle took place, but when he sees Android 19's head, he does not recognize it, realizing that the Android that the Z Fighters destroyed is actually a different Android from the ones that are from his future/time.

Dragon Ball Fusions
Main article: Dragon Ball Fusions Android 19 and 20 appear among the many historical figures who end up inside the Timespace Rift created due to Tekka and Pinich's wish to Shenron for a tournament to prove who is the strongest in time and space, which leads to the Timespace Tournament. Android 19 and 20 join forces with other Androids from different timelines and cause trouble within the Timespace Rift. Android 20 and 19 seem to be focused primarily on absorbing energy from the many powerful fighters within the Timespace Rift. Like most Androids in Dragon Ball Fusions]], Android 19 is classified as an Earthling (a category which includes Androids and Human-Saiyan hybrids, in addition to normal Earthlings).
Android 19 and 20 appear in Sub-Event: "Justice's Little Ally" when Uub tells Tekka's Team that Satan City has been attacked and was about to chase after the perpetrators however they split up into two groups, forcing Uub to enlist the team's aid in tracking one of the groups down. He reveals that one of the groups consisted of an old man and fat ashen man, referring to Android 20 and 19, while the other group was a boy with black hair and a girl with blonde hair referring Android 17 and 18. If Tekka's Team, selects the Old Guy and the Fatty, they will go after Android 19 and 20 while Uub goes after 17 & 18.
After catching up to Android 20 as he flies around Area F2, Android 20 asks who they are and why their power levels are so high. Their high power levels even cause 20 to wonder if his Detection System is malfunctioning only for Android 19 to indicate that it is working properly as his system is detecting the same levels. Was named in Dragon Ball Fusions by Android 20 when he wonders if it is malfunctioning after detecting the power of Tekka's Team during a Sub-Event, only for 19 to confirm it is working properly as his Detection System is picking up the same levels as 20's detection system. Using Uub's description, Kid Trunks identifies them as the two their looking for. Android 20 decides to steal energy from Tekka's Team causing 19 to laugh before telling them to prepare to fight. After being defeated, Android 20 cannot compute how they lost and is captured by Tekka's Team along with 19. Tekka's Team takes them back to Uub who reveals he had just defeated 17 & 18, which leads to Pan asking Uub to join Tekka's Team which he accepts. If they selected the other group, then they will take on 17 & 18 while Uub goes after 19 and 20 whom he defeats by himself.
Tekka's Team can encounter Android 19 and 20 as part of a team of Androids on a cliff overlooking the Future Capsule Corporation building in Area F3. Their team appears as a Strong Enemy. To recruit either of them, Tekka's Team must KO them with a Zenkai Attack which will cause them to join Tekka's Team and appear on the Team's Spaceship. Android 19 and Android 20 can also perform EX-Fusion to create Android 1920 who combines the brilliant mind of Dr. Gero with his equally intelligent and loyal partner, Android 19 to create a powerful energy absorption model Android/Cyborg.
- Manga and Anime
Initially, Android 19 was no match for Super Saiyan Goku (who defeated Frieza and spent 3 years training and preparing for the Androids arrival) even with his heart disease kicking in, which made Piccolo notice how weak he was - noting that Goku's power was nowhere near as staggering as it should be, with Goku also already exhausted and breathing heavily. It was only after multiplying his power after absorbing Goku's Kamehameha and Goku's heart disease became far more severe that Android 19 was able to dominate his opponent. Later when Super Saiyan Vegeta arrived he lasted for a short amount of time, though even after absorbing more energy from Super Saiyan Vegeta he was still completely outmatched.
It is implied that he is initially weaker than his creator, Dr. Gero (as Android 20), but its likely possible that he surpassed him after absorbing a lot of Goku's energy.
Techniques and Special Abilities
- Flight – The ability to fly without the use of ki.
- Energy Attack – The most basic form of energy wave used by androids.
- Energy Absorption – also known as Life Drain 19. A technique where Android 19 takes hold of an opponent with his hands and proceeds to drain their energy through his palms. In the Androids Saga, 19 uses this as a last resort against Vegeta, who spends the duration of their battle outclassing him, but is yet again overpowered when Vegeta tears off 19's arms.
- 19 Absorb - Android 19's signature attack in the Raging Blast Series.
- Energy Drain - A Special Move used by Android 19 in Dragon Ball Fusions that allows him to steal enemy HP.
- Super Energy Drain - A stronger version of Energy Drain that appears as one of Android 19's Special Moves in Dragon Ball Fusions.
- Hyper Energy Drain An even stronger version of Energy that is stronger than Super Energy Drain. Can be learned by Android 19 as a Special Move after reaching Lv. 59 in Dragon Ball Fusions.
- Super Energy Drain - A stronger version of Energy Drain that appears as one of Android 19's Special Moves in Dragon Ball Fusions.
- Energy Wave Absorption - A Ki Blast counter Special Move that allows Android 19 to absorb Ki Blast techniques in Dragon Ball Fusions.
- Super EW Absorption - A stronger version of Energy Wave Absorption that appears as one of Android 19's Special Moves in Dragon Ball Fusions.
Main article: Android 1920
The EX-Fusion of Android 19 and Android 20 introduced in Dragon Ball Fusions.
- Detection System – A scouter embedded within the android's eyes as sensors that can detect energy level and location. Was named in Dragon Ball Fusions by Android 20 when he wonders if he is malfunctioning after detecting the power of Tekka's Team during a Sub-Event, only for 19 to confirm it is working properly as 19's Detection System is picking up the same levels as 20's Detection System.
Video Game Appearances
While Android 19 does not actually appear in Dragon Ball Xenoverse or Xenoverse 2, his outfit appears as clothing options under the name Android 19's Clothes and his hat appears as an accessory under the name Android 19's Hat.
In Dragon Ball Fusions, Android 19 and Android 20 appear as a powerful enemy that spawns on a hill overlooking the ruins of the Future Capsule Corporation in Area 3F of the Timespace Rift. If this powerful enemy is confronted by Tekka's Team, a brief cutscene featuring Android 19 and 20 is triggered and the two detect the teams high power levels and decide to absorb their energy. Joined by Android 33, Android 44, and NamekianAndroid 76 which had been created from Dr. Gero's villain database, Android 19 and 20 confront Tekka's Team in battle. After learning how to recruit more allies from Master Roshi, Tekka's Team can recruit Android 19 (as well as Android 20) by KO'ing him with a Zenkai Attack (a separate Zenkai Attack must be used to KO Dr. Gero in order to recruit him if Tekka wishes to recruit both of them). After being recruited, Android 19 will appear on the team's spaceship (allowing him to be selected as a playable character). On board the team's spaceship, Android 19 will comment that the ship is full of powerful fighters which he has no data on. The game also introduces Android 19 and Android 20's EX-Fusion, Android 1920.

- According to Akira Toriyama, Android 19 and Android 20 were originally meant to be the androids which Future Trunks foretold of, however, his former editor Kazuhiko Torishima said that the two looked "outdated and ridiculous". So, rather than make them the final androids, Toriyama opted to continue the saga in favor of Android 17 and Android 18.
- When Vegeta rips off Android 19's hands, red liquid spews from his arms, making it look like he is losing blood, but for a purely synthetic android, he should be losing oil. In fact, Vegeta even refers to it as oil when he mentions that he has an oil leak.
- Android 19 has what looks like an electronic brain under his hat, much like Android 20 has a human brain.
- With the exception of Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15, Android 19 is the only Android to follow Dr. Gero's orders and is loyal to his creator's mission to eliminate Goku and not rebel against him (at least within the main series). Android 17 and 18 rebelled and killed Dr. Gero, while Android 16 chose to ignore his programming to kill Goku in order to eliminate the threat posed by Cell and helped Gohan awaken his Super Saiyan 2 form, which led to Cell's demise. While Cell did end up killing Goku with his self-destruction, it was unintentional and he was more concerned with testing his power than fulfilling Dr. Gero's quest for revenge.
- However, despite his loyalty, Android 19 did show fear when he was overpowered by Super Saiyan Vegeta (though he may have considered retreating to be his only viable option due to the removal of his hands and thus his ability to absorb energy).
- Despite him being an artificial intelligence, he somehow comes back when Android 17 and Hell Fighter 17 open a portal connecting Earth and Hell. He shares this trait with fellow Android Major Metallitron.
- However in Dragon Ball FighterZ, it is revealed that Dr. Gero had developed technology capable of creating artificial souls, which presumably explains why completely artificial Androids like 19 and Metallitron ended up going to Hell after they died, as they presumably had artificial souls.
- Android 19 is decapitated on both occasions that he was defeated (Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT).
- The effect used for Android 19's voice varies with each dub. In the original Japanese dub of the Dragon Ball Z, as well as most other dubs including the Ocean dub, he has the voice of an ordinary human. In the Funimation dub, he has a nasally animatronic voice, save for the remastered season box sets released by the studio, which see the voice filter removed.
- In the American Budokai series, Android 19's voice is greatly similar to that of Majin Buu's.
- In the Raging Blast series, there is a special dialogue between 19 and Chiaotzu in which 19 will accuse him of copying his looks and Chiaotzu responds by saying "Copy you, why would I?"
