HIGH-LIFT Hood Strut by Spiker Engineering mod for 1st Gen Tacoma

Introduction:

A few months ago I was tagged to goto a thread with someone needing help in testing out the install of a high-lift gas strut hood kit by Spiker Engineering (web site: https://spikerengineering.com/) for a 1st Generation Toyota Tacoma. More specifically, as much as possible, an early 1st Generation Toyota Tacoma, which mine happens to be a I offered my help to Leon in using my truck to be used as a test bed to confirm clearances were good in certain areas along the inside hood-edge making note if the battery is of any concern of being an obstruction to the gas strut assembly when fully closed. As well as going through the instructions sheets and giving any input and/or any changes that I think would be of help to improve install for future customers.

This is how it came packaged as you can see, very professional looking and great care with their product. The mounting hardware, instructions, and the gas struts. HAHAHAHAHA, I was hoping for a sticker as well???

Discussion:

So, I will first discuss 1) packaging and tool prepping 2) reading the instruction sheets and doing a pre-check before any drilling or installing 3) watching the suggested video that the instructions suggested will help in visualizing your own install 4) the install itself on my ’98 Tacoma and what I think would be helpful tools to have and finally 5) my thoughts about the product.

1) Packaging and Tool Prepping:

So, when Spiker Engineering shipped me the kit, which was fast and extremely well packaged with tracker provided, I emptied the contents of the box and unfolded the instruction sheets noticing a components inventory check list of what is included with the kit. Reading a bit further, tools needed for the install. I inspected the gas strut assemblies as well as the ball stud mounting brackets. You will find that the construction of these gas struts and the ball stud mount brackets are very sturdy looking and feeling. In short, a very professional looking kit for sure that, once installed, you will be proud to show off.

As for the install, a basic hand rivet gun, razor blade, electrical tape, a ratchet type load bar, right angle power drill (will discuss this further), basic tool set (i.e. screwdrivers, ratchet socket set, etc), a sharpie, and a drill bit set. I also found it helpful to have digital caliper, but definitely NOT necessary.

2) Reading the Instructions and Pre-check

I made sure to read the instructions as it is not all that long and it has some good example pictures of what to look out for during your install. It helped to look at the future work area while reading and understanding the instructions, which I will discuss why it is important to do a pre-check. But with that said, I recommend simply taking the time to read the instructions first and looking over the “future work area” as it really helped with my install and I was able to avoid a possible problem if I had not taken the time to do a visual inspection first while reading the instructions (i.e. the pictures below will show how my setup was at the time before install).

Also, as part of my pre-check, I propped the hood using the stock hood prop and made sure my ditch lights, as well as any other brackets/light assemblies/etc were not going to be an issue if I was to raise the hood as high as possible. Then I “unlatched” the hood prop from the hood itself and raised the hood as high as possible without “over raising”, if you will. Or put simply, I raised the hood until I could no longer raise/open it and just stopped where it stopped. This also helped me visualize what it would look like.

3) Suggested Video Before Install

Within the instructions, it will direct you to a url for a video to watch of an actual install. There is one thing in the video of the hood bracket itself installed backwards, but the instructions, as well as I, will point out how to install the hood bracket correctly. In either case, taking the time to watch the video really helped with visualizing the install that much further. I keep stressing this point because once you start drilling holes, mistakes are not going to be very forgiving. So, measure many, MANY TIMES and drill once!!!

Heya guys! It's been a long time since I wrote a review on anything but it's winter time which means mods must commence!

This is going to be a simple review, there isn't much to this kit and the install takes all of 20 minutes if you are going slow. So here we go!

Preface!

I bought a Redline Tuning "QuickLIFT Plus" Hood Strut kit for my Toyota Tacoma years ago, it was one of the first and best mods I ever did to the Tacoma and the struts are still working flawlessly after 6 years. When I got the BRZ and found out it didn't have hood struts I immediately knew I wanted another kit for my BRZ. I was tempted by the Group Buy a few months ago with Hood Struts from a different company but I emailed Redline and they said they had a kit coming out soon so I held out. I had such a good experience with the previous kit on my Tacoma I wanted the same kit on my BRZ even though it was more expensive. The Redline kit is made in America, right in Michgan and the quality is top notch. These kits are OEM fit and finish or better and they try to avoid drilling as much as necessary. On the BRZ there is NO drilling or cutting needed, on my Tacoma I had to drill 8 small holes for rivets and self tapping screws as the Tacoma's hood and fenders don't have any good mounting points.

The Kit comes with everything you need other than a 10mm and 12mm ratchet, preferable with a 2" extension.

6 x Washers

2 x Gas Struts

That's it!

I purchased the QuickLIFT Elite struts because I wanted the full L Stainless Steel struts. I have the QuickLIFT Plus kit on my Tacoma and it comes with Black E-Coated Struts. Both kits come with black powder-coated brackets and the Basic/Value kit (Which isn't available for the BRZ) comes with Galvanized/zinc coated brackets.

The Installation!

The Install gets a 1 out of 5 on the difficulty scale. This is possibly the easiest mod you could ever do.

Step 1:Remove upper support bracket bolt and install upper strut bracket with said bolt so that the empty hole is the lower of the two holes. Hold strut bracket parallel with hood support bracket and tighten bolt back into place.



Step 2:Remove the bolt from the top of your front quarter panel between the word SUBARU and your VIN sticker. I forgot to get a picture of exactly this, but you can see in this picture what I mean, it's the bolt where the two black washers are sitting in the following picture.



Step 3:This step is not included in the real instructions that come with the kit. I think they forgot it but I am including it here. This step is ONLY necessary for the drivers side bracket.

Remove the white clip holding the hood latch cable from the fender as it gets in the way of the strut bracket and is extraneous. I used pliers to remove itit's a pain, be careful you don't scratch any paint. You can compare the above picture to the one below to see which white clip I mean, also it will be obvious when you try to install the bracket.

Step 4:Place TWOof the supplied washers over the bolt hole. Redline supplies 6 washers, 4 thick ones and 2 thin ones just in case you need a bit of extra thickness. These washers are important and prevent you from damaging the ridge on your panel. If you need a bit of extra height to make it over the ridge then install 2 of the THICK washers and remove the thin one.



Step 5:Bolt lower bracket into place making sure it' parallel and flush with the inner fender. I forgot to grab a picture of the lower bracket installedbut I'm sure you can figure it out!

Step 6:With the cylinder on the top and the piston on the bottom, snap the strut into place over the ball joints. Start with the piston side and press it on firmly it should snap into place. Then take the cylinder side and do the same up top, you may need to grab and lift the hood with one hand to get the upper ball joint to line up, this is normal as the hood prop only supports one side of the hood and therefore the drivers side sags a bit (which is another issue these struts fix.)

Congrats the Drivers side is done!



Step 7:Repeat the entire procedure on the Passenger side while omitting Step 3 as it is not a problem on the passenger side.

Step 8:As always BASK IN YOUR OWN GLORY!



The Review!

Not much to review here. The product was ordered on 12/22/13 and arrived on 12/24/13, pretty awesome shipping if you ask me!

All the parts were supplied as needed and no parts were missing from the kit!

The only tools you need are a 10mm and 12mm ratchet with preferably a 2" extension to prevent paint scratches but can be done without the extension as long as you are careful. I'm pretty sure even the most lackadaisical car guy has a 10mm and 12mm ratchet sitting around their house.

The fit and finish is flawless, the brackets lined up and the strut snapped on firmly and securely. You do not lose the ability to open your hood fully with this kit, you just have to pop off the struts and you can open the hood to full swing with the hood prop no problem. The stainless steel is SAE Grade L which is "Marine Grade" Stainless the kind of stainless found on boats, in food processing plants and in nuclear reactor vessels, it wont rust even in the saltiest of northern winters.

The only thing I can fault this product on is the missing step from the instructions. The instructions did not include the need to remove the clip in my "Step 3" but the picture in their instructions obviously show this clip needing to be removed in order to properly fit the kit. Other than that the instructions were very simplistic and maybe needed a few more steps to make it more clear. That being said they were easy to read and understand for the average car guy and in all honesty you barely need the instructions to be able to install this kit.

The function of this kit is flawless, I have not used any other kits so I cannot compare but the cylinders in this kit are three stage cylinders. They open quickly for the first 90% of their travel and then slow the rate of ascent to a gentle finish speed for the last 10% until stop. They DO NOT slam open your hood with full force when they open, this prevents damage to the cylinders and your hood. The third stage is used when lowering the hood, where when you get to about 50% to 60% closed the struts release their pressure and allow you to close the hood with minimal effort. You do not have to fight the pressure of the gas struts to close your hood properly. It also prevents the struts from causing your hood to bow when closed due to the pressure of the struts.

Tacoma Hood Struts Install - Redline Tuning QuickLIFT

Installing your Tacoma hood struts

1. Pop open hood and prop with OEM Tacoma hood struts.

2. Mark holes on hood for drilling.

Starting with driver side first, measure 19&#; from hood hinge bracket and mark your location. Keep in mind if you have aftermarket ditch light brackets it may protrude past the OEM hinge so account for this length if so.

Mark &#; from edge of hood and mark your location.

You now found the corner point for your Redline Tuning hood bracket.

Repeat the same for the passenger side.

Align the hood brackets with the ball head pointing outwards away from the engine.

Place the corner of the bracket as pictured below and mark your 2 holes.

3. Drill hood bracket holes

Use a punch tap or small drill bit to create a pilot hole.

Drill holes using 3/16&#; drill bit. I taped off my drill bit and left about 1/4&#; exposed so I don&#;t accidentally drill into the underside of the hood.

Use touch up paint to cover up the exposed metal to prevent corrosion.

Repeat for other side.

4. Install Redline hood brackets.

Use the supplied rivets to install each hood bracket. I recommend getting your own rivet gun. The one that comes with the kit got stuck for me and spent 10 minutes just trying to release the gun.

Repeat on other side.

5. Drill fender bracket holes.

Starting from the passenger side, remove the plastic fender cover by sliding the cover sideways. There are 3 pop it clips attached. Do not pull up as you&#;ll probably break the clips.

Measure and mark &#; from the steel tab that sticks out. It&#;s located underneath the top hood hinge you used to measure on step 2.

Place the fender brackets with the holes facing up. Also make sure it&#;s positioned so it&#;s closed to the front of the truck from the &#; mark you created. Before you drill, you might want to re-measure so you have &#; from the bracket to the steel tab.

After drilling, use touch up paint to cover up the exposed metal to prevent corrosion.

Repeat for other side.

6. Install Redline fender brackets.

Use the supplied rivets to install the fender brackets.

Reinstall the plastic cover.

Repeat for other side.

7. Install Redline gas shocks.

Each end of the shock has a metal clip. You can keep these clipped fully in and just press onto the ball head. The gas strut should be towards the hood side. If installed properly, the clips should snap right in with the clip being fully seated.

Install for each side and you are now done!
