Editor’s Note: Some may take this as a means of doing less work, combining both a draft preview with a draft recap. The truth is, it should be seen as a peek behind the curtain. A draft recap is written long ahead of time, leaning heavily on repurposing the draft preview, so as to publish quickly upon the announcement of the pick. The thought is, this might be a more light-hearted approach. These days, light-hearted approaches are the way to go, though perhaps the NFL’s approach to draft logistics is taking that too seriously.

From two-star recruit, if that, to freshman starter at Navy racking up a dozen tackles against Notre Dame, to casualty of the NCAA’s stubbornness, to Irish captain, to NFL draft pick. Alohi Gilman’s ascension through the ranks of football took another step Saturday when the insert NFL team name here picked the safety with the No. ___ overall pick in the ___th-round.

Not much more needs to be said. Gilman transferred from Navy in order to pursue his NFL aspirations after the military flipped a rule granting athletes a chance to chase professional possibilities before fulfilling their service obligations, a decision since switched back to the allowance. To put it simply, he then made good on that dream.

While Gilman’s sub-6-foot stature will not do wonders for his NFL career, his nose for contact will. If nothing else, he should find a role on special teams for the next couple seasons, giving him a runway to once again level up.

Gilman becomes the first Irish safety drafted since Zeke Motta in 2013’s seventh round. Gilman and Jalen Elliott completely revamped a position that had been a Notre Dame liability for years, most notably in 2016’s debacle, when all the safeties combined did not intercept a pass and broke up only five.

In 2019 alone, Gilman had an interception and two breakups, along with 74 tackles including three for loss and three forced fumbles. (Note: That is not a Mad Libs item; that is an emphasis on an eye-popping stat, underscoring the aforementioned “nose for contact.”)

His Irish career highlight may have come in a humbling loss, making 19 tackles against Clemson in the 2018 College Football Playoff. He totaled 169 tackles, three interceptions and six pass breakups in just two seasons, as well as six forced fumbles. (Again.) His first two interceptions came against Syracuse in Yankee Stadium in mid-November of 2018, a comedy only in that he had been around the ball much of the season, just never completing the play until then.

Gilman may have to wait that long again in the NFL, but his track record indicates a breakthrough is more a matter of “when” than of “if.”

Insert comments on Gilman’s initial salary, with the numbers drawn from’s database.Plug in that he is Notre Dame’s ___th draft pick this season, following defensive end Julian Okwara, tight end Cole Kmet, receiver Chase Claypool, defensive end Khalid Kareem and cornerback Troy Pride. Adjust that to match the order of selection.

Elliott yet waits to hear his name, though many mock drafts suggested he would end up a top-tier undrafted free agent. Running back Tony Jones and defensive end Jamir Jones (no relation) also still have hopes of being drafted, albeit quite slim hopes.

Preseason Feature Mad Libs: Build your own narrative of why your team will win it all; Punt, Pass & Pork

The official unofficial kickoff to the 2016 college football season takes place Monday in Hoover, Ala., as the SEC opens bloviating season by holding the first set of conference media days. Over the next three weeks, you'll be treated to dozens of narratives manufactured to convince you—and possibly your school's athletic director—that your team is going to go undefeated because of the changes made in the off-season.

I've personally subjected you to dozens of these stories through the years, and for that I'm deeply sorry. Beginning this season, I refuse to write any more features about a new coordinator's "attacking defense" or about a new strength coach who is a 100% upgrade over the old strength coach whose workouts apparently consisted of popping in a Billy Blanks VHS tape and leaving the room. I'm just not going to do it anymore.

Starting today, you are.

Campus Rush is proud to present this series of Preseason Feature Mad Libs. With these, you can write your own story about why your wunderkind coordinator's offense will score 7,000 points a game. Then you can share that story with the world. Simply fill in the blanks at the bottom of the page and click the button. Then you can take a screen shot of your story and post it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat. Happy writing. I can't wait to read your stories*.

*This is obviously parody, and anyone who uses the name of a real person followed by some ridiculous detail that couldn't possibly be true is obviously doing so in jest. So don't sue, college football luminaries. As we mentioned last week, Uncle Luke already won this fight.

1. Michigan and Notre Dame announced last week that they will renew their rivalry in 2018 (in South Bend) and '19 (in Ann Arbor). Though the teams have met only 42 times, this is one of the best rivalries in the sport—in part because of one of the reasons why they've only met 42 times. Michigan coach Fielding Yost's order to the rest of the Western Conference (now the Big Ten) to boycott Notre Dame forced Notre Dame to play a nationwide schedule. Yost's team had lost to the Fighting Irish in 1909, and he contended that two players on the 1910 Notre Dame team were ineligible. Yost cancelled the 1910 game and encouraged his conference-mates to avoid Notre Dame, as well. Games against powers from across the country turned Notre Dame into the nation's most famous Catholic university. The teams played again in 1942. By that meeting, both were national powers.

2. The only negative about the renewal of Michigan-Notre Dame is that the Wolverines had to bail on a previously scheduled home-and-home series with Arkansas. Michigan will pay $2 million to get out of the contract, but it leaves Arkansas scrambling to find replacement games. The SEC requires its teams play at least one opponent from a Power 5 conference—or Notre Dame, BYU or Army—on their non-conference schedules each season. In an e-mail to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey wrote that the Razorbacks would be able to seek a waiver because of the circumstances of the cancellation.

3. For watchability's sake, it would be nice if Arkansas could schedule games that fulfill the requirement. But there aren't many possibilities. Still, a quick perusal of the future schedules stockpiled at reveals a few options.

  • BYU has two openings on its 2018 schedule and four open slots on its 2019 schedule.
  • Iowa, the alma mater of Hogs coach Bret Bielema, has an opening in 2019. ESPN could probably help Arkansas make a one-off, neutral-site game against another Power 5 team in 2018.
  • Texas Tech needs another game in 2018, and even though these teams just played, it's always nice to hear Bielema and Red Raiders coach Kliff Kingsbury discuss offensive philosophy.
  • If all else fails, Kansas has openings in 2018 and 2019. That's somewhat shocking. I figured the Power 5 scheduling requirements in other leagues would make Kansas one of the most in-demand opponents in the nation.

4. Where will quarterback Jarrett Stidham land after leaving Baylor? Immediately, he could land at a community college, where he can spend the fall semester before enrolling at another FBS school in January. Because he proved as a freshman that he can thrive at the Power 5 level, Stidham will have a multitude of options. Let's look at a few of them.

  • Auburn: The Tigers may or may not need a new starting quarterback in 2017. If John Franklin III or Sean White wins the job and succeeds this fall, there may be no opening. But if senior Jeremy Johnson wins the job or if any combination of quarterbacks has a bad season and the coaching staff gets fired, there will be an opening.
  • LSU: If Brandon Harris fulfills his promise in 2016, there would be no opening. But if quarterback play continues to be the gap between a talented roster and national title contention, the Tigers may welcome a former blue-chip signal-caller.
  • Miami: Current Hurricanes quarterback Brad Kaaya is likely headed to the NFL after this season. Mark Richt runs a very different offense than what Stidham is accustomed to running, but Richt's attack looks an awful lot like the ones in the NFL.
  • Oregon: Who needs to develop quarterbacks when capable starters keep transferring in?
  • Texas A&M: Trevor Knight is a senior, so unless Knight gets hurt and one of the Aggies' young quarterbacks takes over, the job should be open after this season.
  • Texas Tech: Stidham was originally committed to the Red Raiders. Would he go to Lubbock to try to replace Patrick Mahomes after Mahomes goes to the NFL?

STAPLES: No need for NCAA to punish Baylor—scandals already crippling program

5. You had one job. (Side note: Do we need another addendum to Cheating for Dummies?)

6. Bleacher Report keeps upping the ante on commitment videos. This week, the site filmed Virginia Beach, Va., tailback recruit Khalan Laborn announcing his commitment to Florida State by rolling up to The Opening in a Lamborghini.

7. In lower sticker price but higher production value commitment news, Bleacher Report also made a Walking Dead-themed video to announce Plantation, Fla., offensive lineman Kai-Leon Herbert's commitment to Michigan.

8. If you haven't been reading Lindsay Schnell and Chris Johnson's excellent series on the recruitment of quarterbacks, now is a great time to catch up. Start with this examination of private quarterback coaches and their role in recruiting.

9. Last week, quarterback Trevor Knight wrote a column for Campus Rush explaining how and why he wound up at Texas A&M.

10. The Meyer family of Columbus, Ohio, apparently has to deal with a beastly homeowners' association.

What's eating Andy?

I spent the past two years learning about Pokemon against my will, but I figured once my son got into Star Wars that I'd never need to remember that Charmeleon evolves into Charizard. Now it seems everyone with a smartphone is wandering around chasing these things. Great. You're a full-grown adult celebrating because you caught a Wartortle. Congratulations.

What's Andy eating?

The mechanics of this job require me to fly to Atlanta and drive west on Interstate 20 relatively often. Nearly every time I've done that, I've been hungry. If I'm headed that way, I'm usually facing too much of a time crunch to go into Atlanta and eat, which eliminates a bevy of wonderful places and leaves a long corridor of chains.

I don't eat much fast food—except on this particular drive. When Wendy's introduced the pretzel bun, I tried it on this drive. When Chick-fil-A began selling grilled nuggets, I tried them on this drive. But every time I pulled through a drive-through, I longed for a better meal from a local spot. I just never took the time to look.

Sunday, I had an hour to kill. As the Atlanta skyline grew smaller in the rearview, I clicked on the Yelp app and pressed "Nearby." For a while, it kept pointing me back to places in Atlanta. But that wasn't the goal here. The place had to be outside the perimeter. After a few minutes, the app told me I was two miles from a place called Taco Prado. Good tacos rarely fail to make me happy, so I pulled off the interstate near Six Flags Over Georgia and headed a few minutes north to Mableton, Ga.

Taco Prado sits next to a transmission shop on a stretch of Mableton Highway. It looks like every local Mexican restaurant in every small town in the South—Casa Kitsch. It does not, however, serve tacos like every local Mexican restaurant in every small town in the South. Most small-town Mexican places in this part of the country still concentrate on the lunch or dinner plate. Some carbohydrate is filled with a protein, smothered in cheese and served with a side of rice and beans.

Taco Prado serves those plates but is first and foremost a taqueria. This is a common concept in every city in the southwest and most of the larger cities throughout the country, but it still isn't common in the small-town South. Thanks to places like Austin-based Torchy's Tacos, the taqueria is the next wave of fast casual. Once every city in America gets a Panera Bread, the next step will be a chain taqueria.

Mableton won't need one because Taco Prado already has tacos covered. For less than $14, I got six tacos and a large drink. I ordered two of the al pastor (pork), one of the carne asada (grilled steak), one of the chorizo, one of the barbacoa (shredded beef) and one lengua (beef tongue). At those places I mentioned above, this probably would have cost me twice as much.

Andy Staples

All of the tacos came on grilled corn tortillas—flour was an option, but why bother?—and I had a cup of a the fiery house-made salsa at the ready in case any of them needed rescuing. Only one did. The rest required no adornment, though a drizzle of that salsa certainly didn't detract. The al pastor featured juicy chunks of pork simmered in a tangy sauce. The barbacoa was moist and packed serious heat even without the salsa. The carne asada took the salsa the best. Meanwhile, the lengua tasted like the best part of a great beef stew. Except it came in taco form, which made it infinitely better. The chorizo was the only taco I wouldn't recommend. The meat was dry and overcooked, so skip that one and triple down on the al pastor or double down on the tongue.

Before you leave, spend the extra $1.50 and grab a mango pop from the freezer. You'll be full. Your sweet tooth will be satisfied. You'll have spent less than $20. You'll be back on the interstate in five minutes.

So sorry, fast food chains on I-20 between Atlanta and Birmingham. We won't be seeing much of each other anymore. Unless you can find a way to make a better tongue taco for less than $3, we're through.

Bad Lip Reading

Bad Lip Reading is a YouTube channel created and run by an anonymous producer who intentionally poorly lip-reads video clips for comedic effect. Rolling Stone described the channel as "the breakout hit" of the 2012 United States presidential cycle.[2] As of November 2020, the channel had amassed over 8.02 million subscribers and over a billion video views.[3] Some of the channel's original songs are available on Spotify and Apple Music.[4]

The "Bad Lip Reader" behind the channel is an anonymous music and video producer based in Texas.[5] He usually goes by his stage name of B.L. Reeding. The first Bad Lip Reading video released was a spoof of Rebecca Black's song "Friday", entitled "Gang Fight". New music and lyrics were matched to Black's video to make it appear as though she were singing about gang warfare. The "Gang Fight" YouTube video, released in March 2011, earned BLR a million hits and thousands of subscribers.[2] On March 21, 2021, this video and the channel turned a decade old.

More spoof videos followed, including interpretations of The Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" (a viral video[6] called "Everybody Poops"); Taylor Swift's "Our Song" ("(Rockin') All Nite Long"); and Michael Bublé's "Haven't Met You Yet". The latter was transformed into the "electronica-inspired" "Russian Unicorn",[2] which Bublé himself praised as his "new favorite song"[7] and "one of the coolest things I've ever seen".[8]

In September 2011, BLR branched out from pop singers to politicians with a "bad lip-reading" of Texas governor and US Presidential hopeful Rick Perry. BLR replaced clips of Perry with invented dialogue matched to his lip movements. After airing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the video was featured by news and media outlets across the United States, leading to a sudden surge in Bad Lip Reading's popularity. Following the Perry spoof, BLR released bad lip-readings of President Obama,[9] Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann,[10]Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum.

The channel found even more success in November 2012 when it began overdubbing popular movie and television shows. BLR's version of Twilight quickly went viral, followed by parodies of The Hunger Games; The Walking Dead; and Game of Thrones. The videos have been well-received not only by the public, but also by the cast and creators of the properties being spoofed. In her online blog, Elizabeth Banks, Jennifer Lawrence's co-star in The Hunger Games, said, "Bad Lip Reading is awesome. I was introduced to it by none other than Jennifer Lawrence. Yup — she saw this, people. And she laughed. And so did I. A lot."[11] Lawrence's co-star Josh Hutcherson also praised the video, tweeting it to his fans. The cast and creators of The Walking Dead have publicly praised the Bad Lip Reading "Walking Dead" videos on several occasions.[citation needed]

Expanding his scope yet again, in January 2013 BLR released a bad lip reading of National Football League players, coaches, and referees, which became the channel's most popular video. A second NFL video followed in 2014,[12][13] and a third was released in 2015.[14] The NFL Bad Lip Reading video became an annual event for the channel, with each video being released shortly before the Super Bowl.

In December 2015, Bad Lip Reading simultaneously released three new videos, one for each of the three films in the original Star Wars trilogy. These videos used guest voices for the first time, featuring Jack Black as Darth Vader, Maya Rudolph as Princess Leia, and Bill Hader in multiple roles.[15] The Empire Strikes Back BLR video featured a scene of Yoda singing to Luke Skywalker about an unfortunate encounter with a seagull on the beach. BLR later expanded this scene into a full-length stand-alone song called "Seagulls! (Stop It Now)", which was released in November 2016 (eventually hitting #1 on the Billboard Comedy Digital Tracks chart.[16]) As of December 2018, the video for "Seagulls! (Stop It Now)" is Bad Lip Reading's most viewed YouTube upload and most popular musical production. In the song, Yoda sings to Luke Skywalker about the dangers posed by vicious seagulls if one dares to go to the beach. Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, publicly praised "Seagulls!" (and Bad Lip Reading in general) while speaking at Star Wars Celebration in 2017: "I love them, and I showed Carrie [Fisher] the Yoda one… we were dying. I showed it to her in her trailer. She loved it. I retweeted it… and [BLR] contacted me and said ‘Do you want to do Bad Lip Reading?’ And I said, ‘I’d love to…’”. Hamill and Bad Lip Reading collaborated on Bad Lip Reading's version of The Force Awakens, with Hamill providing the voice of Han Solo.[17] As of July 16, 2020, the video has more than 111 million views.

The Star Wars Trilogy Bad Lip Reading videos also spawned a second musical number titled "Bushes of Love", which featured Ben Kenobi singing to Luke Skywalker about the perils of love. The song hit #2 on the Billboard Comedy Digital Tracks chart.[18]Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda described the song as "THE summer jam of 2017".[19]

In January 2017, BLR released a Bad Lip Reading of Donald Trump's inauguration, which quickly went viral, amassing over 36 million views in 2017 alone. YouTube ranked the video at #7 on its list of the Top Ten Trending Videos of 2017.[20]

In a Rolling Stone interview, the producer behind the Bad Lip Reading videos said that he first encountered the technique of lip reading when his mother, then in her 40s, lost her hearing due to unknown causes. While she excelled at lip reading, he was unable to pick up the skill despite trying: "I was terrible at it."[2]

In 2013, Bad Lip Reading won the Webby Awards' People's Voice Award for "Comedy: Long Form or Series". In April 2014, BLR won the American Comedy Award for Best Viral Video for its "NFL: A Bad Lip Reading" video. Patrick Stewart accepted the award on BLR's behalf during the televised ceremony on NBC.

On June 8, 2014 the BLR Facebook page announced the release of the full version of "Modify" by Kniles, a song that has been used in multiple BLR productions. The fact that this song was used without previous attribution, as well as stylistic similarities to other BLR-produced songs, have prompted speculation that Kniles is another pseudonym for the individual behind Bad Lip Reading.[21]

A Bad Lip Reading of the Disney Channel original movieHigh School Musical premiered as a half-hour special on July 11, 2016 on Disney XD. Similarly, a half-hour Bad Lip Reading version of Descendants aired on November 18, 2017.

In May 2018, BLR released "Royal Wedding", a Bad Lip Reading of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The video quickly went viral, amassing millions of hits. When YouTube revealed the top trending videos of 2018, "Royal Wedding" ranked third in the UK, just behind the actual wedding itself.

In March 2019, BLR released "Chocolate Lagoon", a Bad Lip Reading of the live performance of "Shallow" by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony.[22][23] On Christmas Day 2019, they released another Star Wars-themed music video, "My Stick," which is a sequel to "Seagulls! (Stop It Now)."

Their most recent song, a Halloween-themed song called "Monster Run," was uploaded on Halloween 2020, and is another spoof of BTS.

Copyright dispute[edit]

One of Bad Lip Reading's works, "Dirty Spaceman", a redubbing of "Check It Out" by featuring Nicki Minaj, was taken down due to a claim of copyright infringement. It is unclear if Universal Music issued a formal DMCAtakedown request or if YouTube's Content ID Match system detected the work and removed it automatically.[24] Also, in March 2012, the video "Beard With Glue," a bad lip reading of "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt, was taken down by Warner Music Group on a copyright claim. Unlike "Dirty Spaceman", the claim was soon released, and the video was returned. Likewise, "Gang Fight" was taken down in 2011, but returned. UMG has also taken down "(Rockin') All Nite Long", the Taylor Swift spoof that also features Wiz Khalifa. BLR's parody of "Hot Problems", "Time to Rock", was also taken down, but later returned.

They also did a redubbing of "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 called "Haiku" on October 12, 2018, but the video was taken down on the same day. Another bad lip reading of "You Need To Calm Down" by Taylor Swift, "Lushfull," was also taken down in June 2019.
