Effect (player) (effect) (time) (strength)

The potion effect strength can go as high as but by then it usually cancels itself out, so control MATTERS!

Command:
/effect <player> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier]

Effect number list (Add this to the <effect> section)

So if you wanted to add speed to the player, you would do this:

/effect <Your Name> 1 <number of seconds> <what level of speed you want>

All of these status effects can be removed by drinking milk. Singleplayer users with cheats enabled and operators in Multiplayer servers can use command with the time of the effect set to 0 or to achieve the same goal.

If you have a server, such as RPG or fighting, or arcade,

you can use command blocks (ID ) to give people potion effects for certain situations.

If you have cheats enabled you can obtain command blocks with the following: /give (player)

How to Enter the Command

1. Open the Chat Window

The easiest way to run a command in Minecraft is within the chat window. The game control to open the chat window depends on the version of Minecraft:

2. Type the Command

We will cover examples of how to use the /effect command to give an effect using both the Effect Name as well as the Effect ID. Also, we will show you how to use the /effect command clear all effects from a player.

Add Effect using Effect Name

Let's start by showing how to add an effect to a player using an Effect Name.

For example, you could add the strength effect to the player called DigMinecraft with the following command:

/effect DigMinecraft minecraft:strength 45 3

Type the command in the chat window and press the key to run the command.

effect command with effect name

This /effect command uses a Name value of strength, a duration of 45 seconds, and an amplifier of 3. This will give the player called DigMinecraft the effect of Strength IV for 45 seconds.

The amplifier is used to increase the level of the effect. These are some effect/amplifier combinations for the strength effect so that you can better understand what the amplifier value does in the /effect command.

Effect NameAmplifierResult
strength0Strength
strength1Strength II
strength2Strength III
strength3Strength IV
strength4Strength V

completed effect command with effect name

Once you have entered the command, you will see the message "Given Strength (ID 5) x 3 to DigMinecraft for 45 seconds" appear in the lower left corner of the game window. This indicates that that effect has been given.

view the effect command with effect name

The player called DigMinecraft has been given Strength IV for 45 seconds. The game control to view the current effects for your player depends on your version of Minecraft.

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the key to open the inventory menu and you will see the current effects.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you will see buttons for the current effects appear on the right edge of the screen. Just tap on the effect that you wish to view and it will show you the name of the effect and the duration.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the Triangle button p3 button on the PS controller to open the inventory menu and see your current effects.
  • For Xbox and Xbox One, press the Y button xbox y button on the Xbox controller to open the inventory menu to view your current effects.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, press the key to open the inventory menu and you will see the current effects.
  • For Wii U, press the X button to open the inventory menu to see the current effects.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the X button to open the inventory menu to see the current effects.
  • For Education Edition, press the key to open the inventory menu and you will see the current effects.

See a list of all Minecraft Effects, if you need an Effect ID or Name value.

Add Effect using Effect ID

In the first example, we added an effect to a player using an effect Name (ie: strength). Now let's show you how to add an effect using the Effect ID.

For example, you could add the Jump Boost effect to the player called DigMinecraft with the following command:

/effect DigMinecraft 8 50 1

effect command with effect id

This /effect command uses an ID value of 8, a duration of 50 seconds, and an amplifier of 1. This will give the player called DigMinecraft the effect of Jump Boost II for 50 seconds.

The amplifier is used to increase the level of the effect. These are the effect/amplifier combinations for the Jump Boost effect.

Effect IDAmplifierResult
80Jump Boost
81Jump Boost II
82Jump Boost III
83Jump Boost IV

completed effect command with effect id

Once the cheat has been entered, you will see the message "Given Jump Boost (ID 8) x 1 to DigMinecraft for 50 seconds" appear in the lower left corner of the game window.

view the effect command with effect id

The player called DigMinecraft has been given Jump Boost II for 50 seconds.

See a list of all Minecraft Effects, if you need an Effect ID or Name value.

Clear All Effects

You can also use the /effect command to clear all effects from a player.

For example, you could remove all effects from the player called DigMinecraft with the following command:

/effect DigMinecraft clear

Type the command in the chat window and press the key to run the command.

effect command to clear effects

This /effect command will clear all of the effects from the player called DigMinecraft.

completed clear effects

Once the cheat has been entered, you will see the message "Took all effects from DigMinecraft" appear in the lower left corner of the game window. This indicates that all effects given to DigMinecraft are now removed.

Congratulations, you have learned how to use the /effect command in Minecraft.

Minecraft &#; How to get unlimited potion effect

You can use command blocks, type in the chat window with commands enabled (if you're OP), and it will give you a command block. You need to be OP and in creative mode to use these. Place it and right click it, and you will see a text field where you can type

.

This will give the closest player to the block seconds of the effect when it's activated with redstone. Effect id's are listed on this page, the first column is the number you'll have to use as . The amplifier can be any number between 1 and Normal potions will give either 1 or 2 as amplification. For example, to give the player speed 2, the command has to be

.

or for jump boost 5, you'd get

.

You should watch out that any amplifier value between and will disable jumping, and any value above will decrease jump height.

If you activate the command block with a button, for example, you'll get almost infinitely speed 2.

A command block with time 0, like will disable the effect when powered.

There's more information about command blocks at the minecraft wiki.

snapshots Edit:

In the snapshots, an extra parameter can be added to the command, which will hide particles when set to true. This will remove the curly particles around your head, whilst still giving the effect. eg. .

Also, as Zoweb pointed out, command blocks are now obtained using the command , instead of the id

Effects potion command block

For the command, see commands/effect. For the rendering feature, see Effect (dimension). For the feature in Minecraft Dungeons, see MCD:Status Effect.

An effect[a] is a helpful or harmful condition that affects an entity. Effects can be inflicted in various ways throughout the game, including consuming potions and some food items, being in the range of beacons and conduits, and being attacked by or close to certain mobs.

The command allows players to inflict effects upon themselves and other entities.

Behavior[]

Any entities inflicted by an effect are affected in various ways for an amount of time. During the effect, spiral-shaped particles emanate from the position of the inflicted entity. For most effects, higher levels increase the strength of the effect.

In Java Edition, players can open their inventory to see any current effects afflicted upon them, as well as its level and duration. In Bedrock Edition, effects are displayed in a separate screen, which can be opened by pressing on a keyboard, pressing Back button/Touchpad/- button on a controller, or tapping the effect icon when using touch controls.

Internally, in the command, and in potion Amplifier NBT tags, the game stores an "amplifier" value, which is one less than the displayed level. For example, Strength II has an amplifier value of 1.

Due to the way this amplifier is stored in NBT, amplifiers of to (levels to ) in NBT tags (e.g. on potions) are treated as if they were − to −1 (levels − to 0) respectively.&#;[Java Edition only] The command initially applies such amplifiers in their positive-valued sense but this is later converted to the negative-valued interpretation, leading to inconsistent results. In Bedrock Edition, amplifiers above translate to positive levels, like other amplifiers.

Any number of different effects, including opposing effects such as Strength and Weakness, can be simultaneously active on a player. However, it is not possible to apply the same effect multiple times, even if they are of different levels (e.g. Strength and Strength II). When applying an effect already active on the player, higher levels overwrite lower levels, and higher durations overwrite lower durations of the same level.

In Java Edition, when the stronger effect then overrides the weaker effect, the weaker effect remains, but is hidden. It returns after the stronger effect expires, if the weaker effect has a higher duration than the stronger effect. This change makes it impossible to create custom potion antidotes by applying an amplified effect with a one tick duration.[verify]

Every time when you leave the game with the status effects that have a level of , they become lower and weak when you come back into your world. The way to make status effects stay with the same level every time you go back into the game is that you need the level to be in order to succeed.

In Bedrock Edition, when a stronger effect overrides the weaker effect, the weaker effect is deleted and does not return.[1]

Note that even with commands, effects cannot be made to last forever. If an effect duration is set greater than (215−2) ticks, 27 minutes and 18 seconds, or seconds, it displays as "", but still continues ticking down and eventually expires.

When drinking from Milk Bucket, dying, being saved from death by a Totem of Undying, or traveling through the return portal in The End, all status effects are removed. Single-player users with cheats enabled and operators in multiplayer servers can use &#;[Java Edition only] or &#;[Bedrock Edition only] to achieve the same goal.

Damage dealt by effects (a kind of "magical damage") completely bypasses armor, making it a good way to deal with highly-armored targets (Protection enchantments reduce damage taken from effects in Java Edition only). Witches are the only mob to have natural protection against effects, taking 85% less&#;[Java Edition only] or 95% less&#;[Bedrock Edition only] damage from effects, except Wither.

Effect list[]

Positive effects have blue text in potion information, and in Java Edition are displayed on the upper row of effects in the heads up display, while negative effects have red potion text and are displayed in the bottom row. Neutral effects have the blue potion text and are listed with the negative effects in the bottom row in the heads up display.
