2018 Kia Sorento

Redesigning for the 2016 model year gave Kia’s largest crossover SUV an elegant new look. Though more generic than distinctive in appearance, the reworked Sorento fits in the heart of the crossover category.

Detail changes mark the 2018 model year, starting with enhanced headlight performance and revised front headrests. A rearview camera and automatic headlights now are standard on the base model. LX trim gains a standard third-row seat, when equipped with all-wheel drive. EX models add a hands-free power liftgate, and the EX V6 gains autonomous emergency braking.

Especially in EX trim with the turbocharged engine, the Sorento incorporates all the typical crossover-SUV characteristics. An upscale, substantial overall feel is matched by a well-damped ride and a broad choice of configurations.

Five trim levels are available: L, LX, EX, SX, and SX-L (Limited). In base L and step-up LX models, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine makes 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. EX trim upgrades to a 2.0-liter turbo four that develops 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. Both engines mate with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

L and front-drive LX models have two-row seating. Others contain three rows for seven-passenger capacity.

Though it’s more powerful, generating 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque, Kia’s V6 engine, also driving a 6-speed automatic, feels less enthusiastic than the turbo four. Optional all-wheel drive includes a locking center differential.

Crash-test scores rank highly in the crossover SUV category. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the 2018 Sorento a Top Safety Pick+, with Good scores in each crash test. However, the “plus” designation applies only to top models with V6 engines, whose HID xenon headlights have been rated Acceptable. Sorentos with autonomous emergency braking promise Superior frontal crash protection.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the 2018 Sorento five stars overall, along with five-star ratings for both frontal and side impacts.

Some of the latest safety technology is available, either optional or standard on upper models. All Sorentos have a rearview camera and Bluetooth connectivity. Advanced safety features that can be fitted into most trim levels include adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.

Model Lineup

Optima L ($25,800) comes with the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, two-row seating, remote keyless entry, cloth upholstery, 6-speaker CD audio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, heated power mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a rearview camera. (Prices are MSRP and do not include destination charge.) All trim levels except L can be equipped with all-wheel drive.

Optima LX ($27,100) adds rapid-charge USB ports, an acoustic-glass windshield, and a roof rack. All-wheel drive ($2,790) includes three-row seating.

Optima LX V6 ($29,500) substitutes the V6 engine and has three-row seating. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available ($1,800).

Optima EX ($33,000) comes with the 2.0-liter turbo, front-drive, two-row seating, 18-inch wheels, leather seat trim, heated power front seats, dual-zone climate control, power liftgate, rear parking assist, and blind-spot detection. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is included. All-wheel drive is optional ($1,800).

Optima EX V6 ($34,100) substitutes the V6 engine and has three-row seating. All-wheel drive is optional ($1,800).

Optima SX V6 ($39,100) adds a panoramic sunroof, 10-speaker Infinity audio, 10-way power driver’s seat, 19-inch wheels, and navigation with an 8.0-inch touchscreen. All-wheel drive is optional ($1,800).

Optima SX-L Limited V6 ($44,400) comes with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, surround-view camera, xenon headlights, and Nappa leather. All-wheel drive is optional ($1,800).

Exterior

In its current form, the Sorento conveys a sense of balance. Standing well ahead of previous Sorentos, the look is neatly elegant. Smooth sheetmetal edges create a handsome profile. Nothing is excessive.

Up front, the Sorento’s grille, though prominent, is less exaggerated than on some crossover vehicles. Body panels are softly sculpted, accented at corners by LED lighting, with appropriate yet restrained levels of chrome.

Interior

Modification of the cabin as part of the 2016 reworking propelled Sorento forcefully up the sophistication scale. Soft-touch plastic trim and supple front-seat upholstery help give the impression of a luxury SUV. The cockpit comes across as polished and well-organized.

Controls are grouped into logical, enclosed zones on the wraparound dashboard. Front seats are sculpted effectively, similar to those found in premium makes. Cushions are marvelously supportive, augmented by extendable thigh supports.

Second-row seating is less impressive. Three occupants fit, but sit low. Contouring of bottom cushions isn’t sufficient for adults, and the ill-shaped bench is short on support. With a panoramic roof, headroom is scant.

Second-row seatbacks fold to ease access to the third row, which is roomier than some. Climbing back there isn’t too tough, but legroom could be better.

Cargo space is adequate but far from vast. Volume totals 38 cubic feet with the third row folded, shrinking to 11.3 cubic feet with all seatbacks up.

Driving Impressions

Occupants can expect an impressive sense of solidity, amplified by highly composed handling capabilities. Electric power steering is nicely tuned, allowing faithful tracking on the highway. Brakes modulate easily. As a result, the Sorento delivers an admirably fluid driving feel.

Ride quality is well-controlled, resulting in a quietly poised highway experience, matched by satisfying levels of confidence.

Well-behaved powertrains can deliver frisky acceleration, especially with the turbo engine, marred by just a touch of turbo lag. The turbo works well with Kia’s automatic.

A V6 Sorento feels strong when starting from a standstill, followed by undramatic acceleration to road speed. Although the automatic transmission generally shifts smoothly, some “shift shock” may occur with the V6.

Kia’s Drive Mode Selector has Eco, Comfort, and Sport modes. Transmission shift points and steering are altered, but the rather sensitive engine throttle is not.

Even though an all-wheel-drive Sorento is no hardened off-road machine, 7.3-inch ground clearance permits a fair amount of potential after the pavement ends. A lockable differential keeps front/rear power split at 50/50. Electronic torque-vectoring can apply brakes as needed to help the Sorento steer more accurately.

Fuel economy is reasonably good, though not exactly frugal. With front-drive and the 2.4-liter engine, the Sorento is EPA-rated at 21/28 mpg City/Highway, or 24 mpg Combined. Turbo power is EPA-rated at 20/27 mpg City/Highway, or 23 mpg Combined, with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive drops the estimate to 19/27/22 mpg.

With the V6, an all-wheel-drive Sorento is EPA-rated at only 17/23 mpg City/Highway, or 19 mpg Combined. A front-drive V6 manages 18/25/20 mpg.

Final Word

Even the base L edition is amply-equipped, with some options available. All Sorentos yield a solid upscale feel, as passengers enjoy a quiet cabin and a nicely-controlled ride. Best powertrain choice is the responsive turbo four-cylinder, which is significantly thriftier than the V6.

The 2018 Kia Sorento's base L trim receives a rearview camera and auto on/off headlights, and the LX 2.4 model now offers a Cool & Connected package. All-wheel-drive variants of the LX 2.4 grade now come standard with third-row seating. EX 2.0 Turbo models get the hands-free smart power liftgate, power-folding side mirrors, a 7.0-inch multi-information display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and auto up/down passenger windows as standard. The EX V-6 adds automatic emergency braking and a new Advanced Touring package option in addition to the same new standard features found on the EX 2.0 Turbo. Rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming rearview mirror now come standard on the SX trim.

Vehicle Summary

Slotting above the compact Sportage, the 2018 Kia Sorento is a midsize crossover that's available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations and five- or seven-seat layouts.

Overview

The 2018 Sorento offers three engines including a base 2.4-liter I-4 with 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft that's available only on the EX trim, and a 3.3-liter V-6 with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft. All three engines are paired exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds for the base 2.4-liter, 3,500 pounds for the 2.0-liter turbo-four, and 5,000 pounds for the V-6. Cargo space behind the third row is 11.3 cubic feet, 38.8 cubic feet behind the second row, and 73.5 cubic feet behind the front seats.

EPA fuel economy ratings are 21/28 mpg city/highway for the base 2.4-liter in front-drive guise and 21/25 mpg with all-wheel drive. The 2.0-liter turbo-four is slightly less efficient at 20/27 mpg with front-wheel drive and 19/25 mpg with all-wheel drive. Models with the V-6 are the least efficient at 18/25 mpg in front-drive configuration and 17/23 mpg in all-wheel-drive guise.

The base L trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, cloth upholstery, a USB port, a rearview camera, and 40/20/40 spit-folding second row seats. Higher trim levels can be had with a larger 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreen, Kia's UVO multimedia interface, navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an Infinity premium audio system, additional USB ports, a surround view camera system, HID headlights, leather or Nappa leather upholstery, keyless entry/start, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof.

Safety

The NHTSA gave the 2018 Sorento a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars). In IIHS evaluations, 2018 Sorento received a Good score on all but the new headlights test where it received an Acceptable score (Good is the highest possible score). Thanks to its strong performance on the front crash prevention test where it avoided a 12- and 25-mph collision, the 2018 Sorento receive a Superior rating (Superior is the highest score in the front crash prevention test). As a result, the crossover was awarded the Top Safety Pick+ rating

On all but the base L trim, a full suite of active driver assistance and safety features is available or standard equipment. The tech includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning. Blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are only available on certain trim levels.

What We Think

In a 2016 First Test, we noted that the 2.0-liter turbo-four suffers from slow throttle response but features plenty of torque for passing; however, it was barely quicker than the base 2.4-liter in our acceleration tests. The larger V-6 engine offers significantly better acceleration but its driving dynamics remain similar to four-cylinder-equipped models, meaning it's easy to maneuver thanks to its tight turning radius. Interior noise levels are kept in check with minimal road and wind noise entering the cabin. Ride comfort, on the other hand, is excellent thanks to a revised suspension while handling veers more towards relaxed than sporty Material quality, especially in the SX Limited trim, is excellent, and the infotainment system is user-friendly. With the third row in place, cargo space does take a hit and it's best suited for children on long trips.

Cool Fact

The 2018 Sorento's optional 2.0-liter turbo-four is also used in the Kia Optima and Sportage, and the Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe Sport.

Its a nice car but the 3.3 l V6 is a grenade. I had the head gasket failure at 56,000 mi. I am meticulous about maintenance. This was definitely not my fault. I have had multiple vehicles with over 200,000 mi. I take excellent care of my vehicles This was clearly a KIA manufacturing problem. If you get one make sure you get the warranty.

I really like this car. KIA packs allot of options on thier whole product line for a very reasonable price. Its quiet and comfortable. Good power for a 4 cylinder with a smooth 6 speed AWD transmission. I love the instument layout. Tne touchscreen is very easy to navigate. I connected my phone in about 30 seconds. Love that it works with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. It has plenty of accessory plugs and USB. I also appreciate the NHTSA 5 star crash rating. MPG was good for a car of this size. I have been averaging 27.5 on the highway, which is where I spend most of my time.

Our 2018 Sorento is a roomy midsize front wheel drive vehicle. Higher ground clearance makes seating and exiting very convenient. Visibility is good all around with rear view camera. The 2.4 liter engine with 6 speed automatic transmission is peppy and responsive. Cargo space is very adequate for larger objects with flat fold down seats creating space for sleeping or bulky items. Excellent buy for the money.

At that price, you get an interior fitted with a slick driver-configurable gauge cluster integrated into a dashboard assembled from quality materials that would look at home in a BMW X5 or Audi Q7.

A fully-loaded SXL also brings LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors, rear-seat air conditioning, navigation, an upgraded stereo, 115-volt power outlet, adaptive cruise control, intelligent keyless entry, power tailgate, heated steering wheel, ventilated front chairs and heated second-row seats, 10-way power driver’s seat, and eight-way power front passenger adjustment.

Safety Features

If safety is important to you, Kia also loads up the Sorento SXL with a 360-degree exterior camera setup, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, and front-collision warning with automatic braking.

Under the Hood

While the 3.3-litre V6 engine in our tester is the more powerful of the pair on offer, that’s not why we like it. Instead, it appeals for its smooth soundtrack, the seamless way it delivers its power and a relaxed feel that fits well with the upscale atmosphere Kia has created for high-end versions of the Sorento.

New since the last time we drove this vehicle is an eight-speed transmission whose primary aim is to reduce fuel consumption, and it succeeded: our city driving average was 12.7 L/100 km, a much better result than the 14.7 we saw in the 2016 model we tested.

Kia SUV Driving Impressions

The Sorento may offer better value in its top-end trims than European luxury models, but you’ll be disappointed if you expect to find the same kind of handling. Instead, a cushy ride, light steering and a soft brake pedal all contribute to a relaxed driving character.

You can get a more interesting drive for similar money in a Honda Pilot, whose firmer suspension lends that crossover a sportier feel. But while its Touring trim boasts a list of features similar to the Sorento SXL’s, the Honda is about $3,000 more expensive.

Mazda has another notable entry here with a 2019 CX-9 whose torquey turbocharged engine promises better fuel economy. It’s smaller inside, but is a better match price-wise when equipped similarly to our Sorento SXL tester.

Chevrolet, supposedly a bread-and-butter brand, has even bigger aspirations with its new Traverse, whose price reaches $55,000 before it’s equipped to match the top-end Sorento.

Takeaway

Three years ago, Kia surprised us with what was then one of the most impressively executed mid-priced crossovers you could buy. A number of other very nice utilities have joined the market since then, so the big surprise now is that there are still so few that can challenge the Sorento’s excellent value.
