Ark Snow Owl

Bubo Chinookus is a species of aggressive flying carnivores that existed during the post-Holocene epoch.

A flying creature that resembles the modern day snowy owl but is much larger than an average human.

They are very aggressive and will relentlessly chase down their prey until they can get close enough to eviscerate them.

Humans that approach these creatures can turn out to be in grave danger due to their ferociousness as well as their natural habitat since it has many dangers in it.

Once tamed, these creatures can perform magnificently when carrying out multiple support roles for any tribe.

Dossier Summary

Snow Owls are the descendants of modern day owls that survived the mass extinction event, keeping a couple of traits from their ancestors.

These creatures are able to secrete a freezing chemical into the air that can freeze itself into stasis and everything in its immediate vicinity which also rejuvenates them in the process.

A powerful creature indeed for supporting roles or even scouting, sharing its predatory vision with its rider through their antenna which can help in spotting their targets.

Check Out Our Other Creature Guides

1) Encapsulate

The Snow Owl begins to channel and encapsules itself as well as any creatures within an area around it, including survivors.

Creatures affected will be protected and will heal over time as the ability is held at the cost of the Snow Owl’s stamina being drained.

Default Controls:

Holding the following will keep the ability active:

  • RMB (for PC)
  • LT (for Xbox)
  • L2 (for PS4)

The ability will stop when it is no longer held or when stamina runs out.

2) Predator Vision

Default Controls:

Predator Vision may be toggled on and off with the following:

  • C (for PC)
  • Right Stick (for Xbox)
  • Right Stick (for PS4)

3) Dive

The Snow Owl is capable of diving down at a quick pace which allows it to get from one destination to the other in a short amount of time.

During this dive, the creature is capable of performing additional attacks that have different effects which are the Dive Bomb and the Dive Slam.

Default Controls:

(While looking diagonally or straight down, hold forward and sprint)

  • W + Shift (for PC)
  • Up + Left Stick (for Xbox)
  • Up + Left Stick (for PS4)

4) Frost Slam

Diving down to the ground with such speed, the Snow Owl can create a large impact around it on the ground upon landing which slows down creatures around the radius of impact.

This automatically happens when flying straight down and will cause the Snow Owl to land..

Default Controls:

(While facing straight down)

  • W + Shift (for PC)
  • Up + Left Stick (for Xbox)
  • Up + Left Stick (for PS4)

The Snow Owl can quickly fly around to cover large areas and with their predator vision coupled with their silent flight, they can observe extremely well and avoid being heard when flying around..

Being able to freeze itself as well as other creatures around it, the Snow Owl is capable of assisting in the replenishment of health.

These creatures can either freeze enemies solid and hold them for as long as possible as well as do their slam attack which slows enemies for a short duration, making them good dissablers for multiple situations.

Taming Mount

Being able to slow or hold creatures gives their owners enough time to either trap or tame wild creatures thanks to its disabling capabilities.

Enemy Detection

Using its Predator Vision, the Snow Owl can easily allow its rider to view heat signatures around the area, making detection of enemies and wild creatures much easier.

How to Tame Snow Owl?

A Snow Owl is fairly easy to tame as you can simply make a trap for it using Gateways and Gates that are at least made from Stone or a stronger resource.

Create a trap with 5 or 6 Gateways and seal each side with one Gate and leave one open so that the Snow Owl can fly inside it.

One the trap has been set up, get the Snow Owl to turn aggressive towards you by attacking it and make sure its path will be heading straight for you through the gateways.

If the Snow Owl is on the other side of the trap, be sure to lure it a fair distance before running straight into the trap to adjust its trajectory.

Once the Snow Owl enters the trap, rush through the side of the Gateways and run around to close the Gate at the end, trapping it to be tamed by you and your tribe.

Proceed with shooting at it which will be safe and prevent its escape when torpor almost knocks it out.

The Snow Owl is known to be one of the best flying creatures due to its abilities to support tribes in several ways which makes it a very popular tame for moste survivors.

While this creature’s ability to heal and freeze creatures is quite marvelous on its own, it also has the ability to slow enemies down as well as allow its user to have a better view of life around them..

Those that are in need of an all around support creature should definitely aim to tame such a nifty creature as it can benefit tribes in several ways and give them a good advantage over others.

Basic Info[]

This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.

Bubo chinookus

Discovering Bubo chinookus was a pleasant surprise. Owls are remarkable creatures, but they're not the type that could survive an extinction level event on their own. Since it never strays from the patch of frozen tundra we encountered, I believe the Obelisk was the key to its survival.

Clearly a descendant of modern Strigdae, Bubo shares many traits with its smaller ancestors. For example, it excretes waste in the form of pellets, which make excellent fertilizer, and their large wings let them save energy during long, silent flights. They even hunt in the same way: by diving towards the ground to attack their prey with powerful talons.

However, these talons also secrete a chemical with a high freezing point to slow down their prey, and they can even unleash this chemical in a wide cloud, temporarily freezing their foes.

With its swift flying and frigid attacks, Bubo makes an excellent single-rider support mount or scout. The latter is helped by its tremendous vision, which it can share with its rider via its antenna. Not only does this make enemies easier to see, but Bubo can also spot Element veins with ease, even when they're underground.

The majestic and giant Snow Owl flies around the Snow Dome, occasionally landing to kill an animal or rest. It's an aggressive creature towards nearly everything in sight, and can easily spot any animal in hiding due to its heat vision. Perfectly accustomed to its habitat, it is for sure one of the most powerful predators in the Snow Dome aside from the massive Dire Wolf packs roaming the snowy forests. R-Snow Owls can be found in the Eden zone on Genesis: Part 2.

The Snow Owl is a massive owl that prefers to live in very chilly regions. It looks and handles similarly to an Argentavis, though it usually has whiter colors for camouflage, has a thicker body, and a larger tail. Its face is wrapped tightly by tendrils of corrupted element, and its eyes look almost robotic in nature. Its wings are incredibly long, and the ends are usually tipped with a darker color than the body, typically being gray or black, with the legs and head usually matching that color. Crowning the top of its head are four large antennae that give it heat vision capabilities, which through these antennae it can share with its rider.

R-Snow Owls usually come in darker colors and hunt high in the mountains north and south of the Eden zone. These owls have a different pattern, with a smoother texture. They also have a darker blue bio luminescence on their face and feet.

Color Scheme and Regions[]

This section displays the Snow Owl's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Snow Owl. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Snow Owl will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Snow Owl's regions by entering in the cheat console. For instance, would color the Snow Owl's "body main" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Snow Owl

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

They have very high speeds and utilize a dive bomb attack similar to the Griffin. It can also curl up and freeze itself in place, during which time it will heal itself and others around it. However it will not use any special abilities in the wild.

A Crossbow or Rifle can be used to kill the snow owl without taking much damage. The owl will attack anything near it relentlessly until it dies, so melee weapons and mounts can also be used.

It should be noted that the Snow Owl takes reduced damage from headshots, so aim for the body.

Use a ranged weapon - a Crossbow, rifle, or compound bow will work perfectly here.

Snow Owls are very fast and commonly come in a group of 2 or 3. They take less damage from headshots with ranged weapons as well. If fighting a player with a Snow Owl, they can dive, freeze and heal all at once. Snow Owls have a higher base damage than a Argentavis, and they are also faster. They also are commonly killed by managarmrs and dire wolves, and R-owls tend to wander into larger enemies.

It has wide turning radius, much like Griffin, so circling around it can kill or knock it out easier.

So the other day me and my tribe (there's three including me) went to tame a snow owl on our tapejara. We weren't even in the snow globe when I (being on the back of the tapejara) got killed by those new ice dragons (I can't remember what they're called :P). We went back, got my body, and went to try again. This time, we got halfway in, then guess what happens.. I get killed again, and we're forced to abandon mission. Any tips on how to get one without getting killed by those new ice dragon things?
