Your suspension has two differnent types of motion.

1 is called compression, which is when the suspension is soaking up a bump in the road. Compression causes the tire/wheel to move upward into the wheelwell. The other direction is called rebound. Rebound travel is what soaks up holes in the road. The whole suspension is then controlled by the torsion bars or coil springs (torsion bars are springs too) and the shock absorbers. The spring supports the weight of the vehicle and the shock absorber controls the movement. In order for a shock absorber to work properly it must have some range of motion.

When you install these keys.....

Imagine you are standing on a surface that is 3' (three feet) above the ground. You jump off this elevated surface to the one below. Naturally when you land you bend your knees to absorb the impact. That's compression travel. When you install the torsion keys on a 1/2 ton NON-HD vehicle you are increasing the amount of compression travel by raising the vehicle. You have now leveled the truck (or thereabouts) but at the same time you've reduced the amount of rebound suspension travel to almost nothing. That means you can still absorb bumps in the road just fine, but any hole in the road is now going to quickly max your suspension out. Because the suspension is now maxed in one direction it cannot absorb holes and this is what makes for a noticably "stiffer" ride. It's not really stiffer, it's just closer to hitting the rebound stops and won't be able to move like it did when stock. The shock absorber doesn't have enough time to slow the suspension down as it cycles downward and the suspension will now quickly top out (opposite of bottoming out).

In terms of the Geometry. You're stock suspension system is designed to handle stress at certain points the best. When you install these keys, you are changing the location on your suspension where it receives the stress. Imagine you have a metal pipe. This pipe has been designed to handle stress at the middle. Therefore the strongest part of this pipe is at the middle of it. Intalling these keys is like moving the location of where the stress is applied more closer to the ends of the pipe. The pipe was not engineered to receive stress at this new location. This is what I mean when I say "The Geometry has changed"
Now to put this in terms of installing Keys, If you ever maximixe your suspension as I have submitted in the above quote, you are adding a stress to your suspensions system that your truck was not designed to receive. Over time this will cause problems.

As long as you do not crank (adjust upwards) the aftermarket keys you should be ok. If you do it WILL put the suspension components out of spec and WILL cause problems.

Adjusting your factory keys does the same thing as installing the lift keys, but NEVER crank the aftermarket ones.

Just because I am curious, why did you get aftermarket keys as oppose to adjusting your factory ones?

Considering Lifting My Suburban

Shifty98, you can either listen to the guy(s) who have actually done what you want to do, or you can listen to pickup drivers and people shoveling 'common wisdom'.

Here's the factory Z71 key over the Rough Country 'leveler' key. It's akin to the 'Ford' key swap being mentioned.

My installation of that Rough Country kit, my direct experiences and detailed photos are in the early pages of this topic, along with a lot of other problem solvings related to the GMT800 / Vortec vehicles -
And several pages later is the second pass at that install when I upped the rear spacer from 3/4" to 2"

Here's the link to the roster of 20+ Suburban / Tahoe owners here who have posted about their mods and choices / experiences. Several of them have done such basic lifts and reported their experiences and most are very willing to answer questions or give useful actual experience with these vehicles.

oh and I looked again, it's TEN different torsion bar offerings.

bottom line the low-budget 'keys and spacers' lift works great on these vehicles, it's good for at least 2" of suspension height gain without any noticeable decrease in ride quality. That's my direct experience. And I've still got 4-5 full threads of adjustment range remaining on the torsion key bolts. That's about another 1" of ride height adjustment. At which point things get very stiff, you're on the stops, and your CV angle and wheel bearings are going to give you problems.
The downside is that due to the square nature of the wheel well openings on these vehicles, you don't gain much room for larger tires. you can fit 285/70-17 as-is. With maybe a bit of wheel tub rub in the front, turning, under compression. Any bigger tire and you start contacting the fender metal and the front bumper shroud and you'll have to start making relief cuts to enlarge the fender opening.

Hey Guys, I'm reading a lot of good info about leveling the 4wd Silverado's on this site. I don't know about the Ford keys that some of you are talking about. Do I need those to level my '04 ext cab Z71 properly or would I be OK just to crank the stock set up? Thanks

If you need to go up much more than an inch or so to get it level, then you may need to go to a Ford key.

They make keys for your truck. Dont know the brand name, I had them installed when I had my tires installed. Keeps you from moving the bars from the factory settings.

I used the Ford Keys on my and it worked out great. I you really want to spend the extra money for the ones made for the chevy i think the companys are ready lift and suspensionmax. There may be others, those are just the ones i looked into. The price difference is why i chose the ford keys 40 bucks for both compared to 200-250 bucks for the others.

FYI, if your 4WD truck has been raised (or lowered) by adjusting the torsion keys or by having aftermarket keys installed (SuspensionMaxx or others) then your bars are no longer at "factory settings". Leveling on a 4WD Silverado is accomplished by raising (or lowering) via the torsion bars which are essentially the front springs on a 4WD. Ford keys, SuspensionMaxx, or whatever, all accomplish the same thing. They allow a greater range of adjustment than the stock torsion bar keys. It's just that the Ford keys are MUCH cheaper. If your front of your truck hasn't moved up, then there would be no point in having any aftermarket keys put in. Leveling. Raising with the torsion bars. Re-alignment is likely needed.

The 2WD trucks don't use torsion bars, they have coil springs. There are spacers available to raise them also.

Any ford dealer should have 'em in stock. I got mine from the local dealer for $35 a piece. Excellent investment. You're also gonna need a 7-ton gear puller from Sears so expect the total project to cost somewhere around $110.

sorry to bring up an old post but i did not think i should make another thread.
also i know this is the silverado forum but i have a question about my 02 tahoe 2wd with t-bars.
i am planning on getting the fabtech 3" lift spindles, but i wanted a little more then 3" i was looking for 4". can i use the same ford keys to get the extra inch or two?
or would i have to get aftermarket keys. i really don't want to spend the extra money if i don't have two.
3" spindles are about 500
keys are about 250
thats 600 less then i can get a fabtech 6" lift for.
so i'd rather spend the extra and get a 6" lift but that would be overkill for what i need. if the ford keys would work then i can get the 4" i want or can i use my stock keys to get another inch

i know that alot of people don't see a point in lifting a 2wd truck, but i build my cars/trucks for myself. so please don't say why would you want to lift a 2wd truck. i drive off road alot but not the kind that needs 4wd.

well i found my answer on full size chevy.
yeah they do fit but i just adjusted my stock ones. and i got 2"
now the front is .5" lower then the back. it looks much better
