The inmates housed at Middleton Unit located at FM in Abilene, TX are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

Middleton Transfer Unit is a medium custody state prison operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) that houses about 2, G-1 minimum to G-3 medium security inmates and those classified as transient (transient offenders are awaiting trial or are temporarily being held at this location while awaiting a more permanent facility assignment) located in Abilene TX on acres of land and is co-located with Robertson Unit. Middleton Transfer Facility is designated as an intake and transfer facility for convicted adult males that also serve as a confinement facility for youthful offenders (also called residents).

Visiting Hours for the Middleton Unit Transfer Facility:

Inmates at the Middleton Unit are allowed visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  All visitors are required to be on the inmates approved visitors list prior to attending a visiting session.  Visits at this facility can be either contact or non-contact (behind a glass partition).  The type of visit will depend on your relationship to the offender, for instance if you are a family member you are usually allowed contact visits, friends are restricted to non-contact visits unless authorized by the Warden's office.  All regular visits are two hours in duration if space and time permits, special visits for visitors who live over miles away can be 4 hours in duration but require prior approval from the Warden's office.  Inmates at Middleton Unit are allowed two adult visitors per visit (anyone under the age of 16 will not count towards the visitor limit).  The number of children allowed will depend on the amount of space and the ability of the visitor to keep control of their children during the visit.

Visiting Hours and Rules

The visiting hours at Middleton Transfer Facility are on Saturdays and Sundays from am to pm. Most visiting periods last for about two hours, and each inmate is allowed one visit per weekend. Contact visits are allowed if the visitors are immediate family.

Two adults (18+) are allowed to visit an inmate at one time. Minor children are not counted in the visiting number. 

Visiting Applications

Before you can visit an inmate at Middleton Transfer Facility, you must fill out an application and get approval from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. To get the process started, click on the visiting application and instructions below.

Since the approval process can take about 30 days, your inmate might not be at Middleton Transfer Facility long enough for you to have your visit. However, your approval from the TDCJ applies to all units throughout Texas. This means that once you gain approval to visit your inmate, you can visit them at whatever facility they are housed in.

What can you bring to a visit?

When checking in for a visit, the officer at the unit security checkpoint will ask you for the following information:

  • Name and TDCJ number of the offender you are visiting
  • Your relationship to the offender
  • Your current physical address and phone number

A photo ID is required for all adult visitors. Everything must be kept in your vehicle except your ID and $25 cash (in coins) for the vending machines. You are allowed to carry the coins in a small wallet, clear plastic bag, or change purse.

Visitors with infants or small children may bring no more than three diapers, baby wipes, and two baby bottles (“sippy” cup for toddlers). These items must be stored in a clear plastic bag.

You can purchase soft drinks and snacks from vending machines for your inmate during general and contact visits, but the items must be consumed during the visit. You can't bring in food or beverages from the outside.

Dress Code

The dress code at Middleton Transfer Facility is strictly enforced. Your visit will be denied if you are not dressed appropriately.

  • Clothing that is tight fitting, revealing, or made with see-through fabrics is prohibited.
  • Clothing with pictures or language that may be considered profane or offensive is not allowed. 
  • Shorts, skirts no shorter than three (3) inches above the middle of the knee while standing, capri pants, or long pants are allowed. Length is not restricted for children ages 10 and younger. 
  • Sandals, flip-flops, and open-toe shoes are allowed
  • Sleeveless shirts and dresses are allowed, but must cover the shoulders.
