God of War - The Magic Chisel, The Mason's Channel and Northern Dock

The Magic Chisel is your next quest in God of War PS4's main story, and starts out with you heading to two area: The Mason's Channel and the Northern Dock.

Here on this page, we'll take you through everything you need to know about this section of your quest, including how to solve any puzzles, take down any bosses and find any useful loot along the way. For guides to specific collectibles we also have pages on Valkyrie locations and how to open Hidden Chambers, Lost and Found locations and Faces of Magic locations, too.

This page follows on from God of War - A New Destination, Go the Serpent's Horn, and is the first of a few pages covering The Magic Chisel. You can find links the others just below:

Otherwise, you can always cycle back to our main God of War walkthrough and guide hub, too.

The Magic Chisel - The Mason's Channel

The first stop on your hunt for the Magic Chisel - one of two MacGuffin's you'll need to get to Jotunheim, the other being the Jotunheim travel rune - is a place called The Mason's Channel, which is in sight from where you are in the Lake of Nine.

Head down to your boat and paddle North-East, to the two big crossed oars held by a couple of giant statues.

Through the other side you'll notice a big, closed gate on your left, and up ahead a place to dock, but only a small area of land to run about on.

On dry land, you'll notice a weird, floating spectre hovvering above a corpse. This chap gives you the side quest favour, The Anatomy of Hope, if you talk to him, but worry about that later. Your task right now is to get that chisel, which means opening the gate.

Head to the big wheel nearby and turn it, as always, to open the gate - but as you do be prepared for a battle!

Several enemies - a lot of them Dark Elves, weirdly - will attack, along with an Ogre, which is defeated in the usual manner: beat it down and then hop on its back when prompted to smash away at the other enemies nearby, and eventually take it down.

After they're all cleared out, head back to the boat and paddle through the now-open gate.

The caves you travel through will begin to turn rather icy as you progress, and soon enough you're in a real winter wonderland as temperatures suddenly plummet.

At the other end, you soon come to a dock, and there are more enemies ahead.

The Northern Dock

Moor up and hop onto dry land, and you've reached The Northern Dock.

Directly in front of you are two new enemies: Wulvers, which are essentially werewolves with some pretty vicious attacks.

Investigate the dead Giant

Take them out - beware the red rings indicating unblockable attacks, and dodge accordingly, countering where you can and using Atreus to stun them when needed - and then head to that big glowing ring that's on the finger of the huge, fallen Giant, Thamur.

There's another Hidden Chamber to the north, but worry about that later - your task here is getting past this big finger. First up, shoot it with a shock arrow - that red gem is another explosive red crystal!

This'll drop it to the ground, and now you need to turn it to the side to touch it to the ice, so it can be shattered. First, turn it to the right.

Shoot the ring with another Shock Arrow and the ice on the right will shatter, granting you access to a coffin chest just inside.

Then turn it all the way to the left and do the same, and now the path ahead is clear.

Head inside to find a cavern with a couple of Wulvers up ahead on the upper level, and another Hidden Chamber door at on the bottom. The Wulvers are actually frozen for now, so take them out with some range attacks before they reanimate, and then drop down to the bottom level.

Hang left, and there's a small marked ledge you can climb up to find a walkway up to the higher level. Follow it up and round until you find a gold chain - but don't climb it yet, continue just past it instead to another coffin chest, that contains some very handy armour.

Now, climb up that golden chain and exit into the next area, The Frozen Lake around Thamur's Corpse, and be ready for more puzzles and combat ahead.

God of War - Find a way to the Hammer, Traveler Champion and Seasons puzzle solution

Find a way to the Hammer, defeating the Traveler Champion and finding the Seasons puzzle solition are your next tasks on The Magic Chisel quest in God of War PS4's main story.

This page follows on from God of War - Thamur's Corpse puzzle solutions, Frozen Lake, Head of Thamur, and is the third of a few pages covering The Magic Chisel. You can find links the others just below:

Otherwise, you can always cycle back to our main God of War walkthrough and guide hub, too.

Find a way to the Hammer

After chatting with Sindri, you need to find a way to traverse across Thamur's Corpse to the giant's hammer - that's going to be your way to break the ice and get down to the Chisel on the lower level.

To progress, look to the glowing red gems on Thamur's big braids of hair. They're red crystals, and that means they explode when shot with a shock arrow. They also have those discs either side of them that you can hit with your axe to spin them, although the first one you don't need to spin.

Hit the nearby red crystal with a Shock Arrow to explode it and cause some disruption, making the next ones along the braid targetable.

The next one you need to hit a disc first to spin the crystal round so its visible for another shock arrow, and quickly follow up with a Shock Arrow as soon as you do so (it'll spin all the way round, so you need to time it right).

This knocks the whole thing out of the way and now you can progress by jumping across to where the braid just was. Climb up the ledge ahead, grab the loot fromt he Hacksilver chest, and continue platforminga round the side of the big stone tower until you get to some big doors, and enter.

Traveller Champion

Inside is a mini boss called a Traveller Champion: a tough, armoured dead knight with a huge sword and shield on his back.

:: The 20 best PS4 games you can play right now

Defeat him by knowing when to dodge and when to attack. He essentially has two types of attack: a blockable one (yellow warning circle) and an unblockable one that you need to dodge (red circle). Dodge at the right time and you can get damage off by hitting him when he's vulnerable after an attack.

Look out for ranged enemies that pop up - focus them down quickly - and don't bother with throwing your axe at all, as he's invulnerable to it, until one specific moment: when he raises a kind of glowing skull up above his head. Target that with a throw of your axe as quickly as possible. If he successfully charges this attack it'll do massive damage. If you hit it with a throw of your axe, it'll do massive damage to him!

When he's low on health his helmet will come off, and he'll start to take damage more easily. Keep waiting for the right moments - bait him into an attack when his back is turned to you, as at that point he's invulnerable until he lunges - and just keep dodging and countering until he goes down.

He'll drop some good loot, including some exclusive items, and it'll start another new Kill Labour, Travel's End, too.

Head to the Western wall and pull the big rock back all the way into the middle of the room to open up an exit. If you pull it as far across as it'll go, you can hop on top and out of a ledge on the Eastern side to a small chest.

Push it back to the middle of the room, and you can then use the big, golden statue of a sword to reach a Legendary chest. Climb onto the stone cube, hit the disc to the right of the sword to spin it, jump on, climb up, and shimmy to the right to jump down onto a ledge with the chest. Then drop back into the room and exit via the gap you made when you first pulled the stone away from the wall.

Do a spot of platforming outside and work your way round to the right, following the golden hand markings on the big stone pillar ahead, and climb up onto the platform where you'll see a huge buckle in front of you, with a red crystal attached.

Shooting it will cause it to detonate as usual, but you need to swing this huge thing to make the detonation do anything useful. Head over to it, interact with it when prompted, and when it's swinging away from you command Atreus to shoot. It'll take a couple tries but time it right and the hude ice wall ahead will shatter, almost causing the hammer to fall!

Looks like you'll need to climb up to the top of it to finish it off though.

Make your way up the Hammer

Head to the end of the platform to your right and swing and shoot another big buckle to smash some ice, opening up a path to another coffin chest with solid Svartalfheim Steel inside.

Now, you can jump onto that buckle and climb up it via the gold markings.

Follow all the gold markings as you go - it's all fairly intuitive - and you'll pass through the handle of the hammer and up, eventually, to the very top.

Release the strap

At the top of the hammer, give the strap a big old nudge and it'll go tumbling not very far. It's now lodged against another wall and you're going to need to give it another shove.

Find a way to the hammer's head

Head inside the huge doors in front of you where you landed, and imemdiately open a coffin chest to your left for a Rare bit if Waist Armour favouring Runic abilities.

Ahead, it's time for a puzzle - and a battle.

Seasons puzzle solution

This puzzle has you rearrange symbols on the wall to represent seasons. Get them in the right order and you can progress.

First, smash the box on the right to let Atreus crawl through a little tunnel to get to the gold panels up ahead.

He'll reach another sand bowl, meaning the puzzle's begun. You need to hit the spinner discs under each of the four rectangular gold panels to spin them to display the right seasons. We'll get straight to it (if you want to figure it out for yourself just skip ahead a few lines).

Seasons puzzle solution

From left to right.

  1. Autum (leaf)
  2. Summer (Sun)
  3. Spring (flower)
  4. Winter (snowflake)

When that's solved and Boy writes the correct rune into the bowl, the floor will magically fix itself - step on! It'll start to rise, and Atreus has to keep writing the word into it to keep making it rise, only there's a problem

Enemies! You now need to clear the area of enemies, repeatedly, as quickly as possible to avoid Atreus being disrupted from writing the rune in the bowl.

Use all the tools in your arsenal to crowd control - area of effect attacks are probably better than precision axe throws, for instance - and keep an eye on the bar at the top. When that bar hits the bottom, you're done for! Keep clearing waves to top it up.

Save your Spartan Rage for when things are looking really hairy, with the bar close to the bottom for instance, and you should be fine.

Once you reach the top, quickly command Boy to shoot the two red crystals by the exit to open up a path, then jump for the marked crack in the rocks to climb up and escape.

Push the hammer

Right, hopefully this is the last bit of hammer-shoving you nead to do. Climb round to the hammer, give it a push and ride it down to your next objective.

God of War () Wiki Guide

Follow Mimir’s Instructions to the Chisel

Video Guide (Part 23)

Now that you have a new heading towards a previously inaccessible area - Mimir can lead you to a magic chisel that can carve the travel rune to Jotunheim.

After the World Serpent pushes the bridge around to face Helheim, he’ll further recede the water levels as well, opening up new places to explore around the Shores of Nine. Note that you can have Atreus read out the runes of the Braziers below the realm tower here to light them up, and you’ll get additional XP for lighting all eight towers up.

Artifact Location:
To the right of Helheim Tower, just before the lift, look for a dead soldier who holds one of the Abandon Ship artifacts and add it to your collection.

Head down the lift and ward off some pesky Nightmares as you arrive at the Mason’s Channel. What was once two giant statues and in impassible roadblock have now revealed themselves to be statues on boats, and the water level has gone down below the blockage. There’s a Mystic Gateway along the left by the cliff, and a boat dock in the far corner.

Treasure Map Location:
Look along the shoreline to spot a Treasure Map sticking out of the sand, and read it to learn about The Island of Light.

You have several new places to explore if you wish:

  • The path leading up the wall from the shore will take you to one of Sindri’s Shops and a hidden area: The Council of Valkyries. You can also take the boat to explore the opposite shore of the Alfheim Tower to uncover a new favor: The Flight of Fafnir.
  • Along the shore under the Alfheim Tower, look for another Yggdrasil’s Dew of Strength hanging above the water. Off to to the Northeast, a new island has appeared below Stone Falls - Buri’s Storeroom.
  • The Stone Falls itself has expanded to show two giant water wheels, and there’s a Yggdrasil’s Dew of Luck located just by the giant gold doors.
  • The path to the Volunder Mines has changed, offering up a new area to paddle through the Volunder Chasm. Just outside it near the Vanaheim Tower is another of Yggdrasil’s Dew of Strength hanging along the shore by a new dock for the Cliffs of the Raven which has also expanded.
  • The Lookout Tower also has new places to explore below the Vanaheim Tower, and on the other side of the now-broken statue above Muspelheim Tower lies a new dock next to another of Yggdrasil’s Dew of Defense.
  • To the West of Muspelheim Tower, a new tunnel called the Landsuther Canyon has opened up leading to Landsuther Mines below The Riverpass - expect a quest from Brok to take you here soon.
  • Under the Nifilheim Tower beneath the large wrecked ship lies another of the Yggdrasil’s Dew of Strength you can pluck out. There’s another one near a new dock to the Iron Cove - a Yggdrasil’s Dew of Runic Power, as well as a Yggdrasil’s Dew of Vitality behind a rock on the South side of the expanded Isle of Death, as well as one on the West side.
  • On the West side, Asgard Tower is now climbable, across from the ravine to Fafnir’s Storeroom and near a new entrance to the Forgotten Caverns.
  • North of Svartalfheim Tower is a small watery tunnel leading to Yggdrasil’s Dew of Luck, and a backdoor to the Forgotten Caverns, but the river also deeper to the Northwest to Konunsgard, which is locked for the moment.
  • In the Northern area past the Svartalfheim Tower, a new island fort has appeared - the Light Elf Outpost. A narrow stream on the right hides a Yggdrasil’s Dew of Cooldown, and past it is another Yggdrasil’s Dew of Defense off to the left side towards a new region: The Ruins of the Ancient, and a small tunnel to the right of the dock leads into a passage called the Northri Gorge that leads to the locked Northri Stronghold, an area of interest for Sindri.
  • Finally, Tyr’s Temple itself has a new lower level with a Hidden Chamber and a mysterious door that needs a mysterious key.

Besides all that, the waters are teeming with barrels of Hacksilver and gold glows that denote Aegir’s Gold to stock up on, so there’s plenty to do if you don’t want to move onto the main quest just yet.

If you do, head on your boat between the two giant oarsman statues and into the next region: The Mason’s Channel. The river leads to a large gate that you’ll need to open via the nearby shore.

Favor: The Anatomy of Hope - as you land on the shore you’ll see a corpse rise up nearby - but he’s not hostile. This ghost wants you to find the bones of his dead lover that have been scattered across the Lake of Nine. Gullveig promises a reward if you do - and the promise of speaking to the dearly departed…

Head over to the wheel mechanism and pull it to open the gate - but as you do, an Ogre will appear, soon backed by several Dark Elves bent on revenge. Try and use some of your newly unlocked combos and abilities in tandem with Atreus and his stunning and runic abilities to sow discord among them. Remember there are skills for dodging into attacks, counters, and sprinting attacks you can use to close the gap on the Dark Elves, and skirt around the Ogre and use stunning attacks and Atreus to get him primed for a finisher.

After killing the group, use the nearby healing stones if you need them and loot the Ogrel’s body for some Solid Svartalfheim Steel.

Now take the boat and leave The Mason’s Channel behind to find the heart of the real upcoming region: Thamur’s Corpse (and check the map if you want to see the real size of this new area!).

As you reach the Northern Dock, check out the nearby Mystic Doorway before taking stock of the icy area you are now in.

Odin’s Raven Location:
While facing the Mystic Doorway, be sure to look up to spot a small green glowing raven perched on top of some ruins above you - far enough away you can barely hear him. You’ll need to aim high for the axe to arc down into him.

Head onwards to face a new enemy: The Wulver. These werewolf-like creatures are fast and deadly, and constantly shift around to dodge blows both in melee and ranged. They also pounce with deadly claws that can sometimes be blocked and countered - but beware when a Wulver gets low on health.

It will sprout new bloodier claws that deal even more damage, and it may lunge forth for a grab that you’ll have to mash circle to get out of as it tries to take a bite out of you.

Find an opening with stuns or shock arrows and capitalize on their momentary weakness before they can recover and take the Wulvers out.

There’s a sealed Hidden Chamber along the ice wall - but turn your attention to the dead giant’s ring.

It’s made of Shatter Crystal, and you hit it once with a Shock Arrow to loosen it up, and then turn the ring in his dead finger to have the crystal face the walls of ice, and hit it with a Shock Arrow to shatter the ice. Be sure to hit the right side to reveal a Coffin that holds Solid Svartalfheim Steel.

Take the left path through the ice wall and into a small pit with another sealed door. Look for a hanging bucket full of Hacksilver and then climb up the opposite side where a dead body holds more Hacksilver on a thin roof.

Head past the chain at the end of the ramp to find a Coffin holding Runic Wyrmskin Pauldrons and Solid Svartalfheim Steel. Now you can climb up the chain at the end to leave the hand of the dead giant behind and see the remains of the rest of the body itself.

Video Guide (Part 24)

There’s a long tundra between you and the rest of the body of Thamur, To the right there are some Wulvers lying in wait - take care not to get blindsided by them.

If they start dodging all of your attacks, you may have to bait them into attacking and counter with a well-timed shield, then press the advantage.

Lore Location:
To the right of where the Wulvers were at is a large ruin with a light crystal surrounded by red sap. Under it you can find Rune Reads for Atreus to translate: Njord of the Vanir.

Look around in the center of the tundra for a lone Coffin on a sled, and loot it to find Plated Runeweaver Bracers and Solid Svartalfheim Steel. Also near the center, on the other side of a ruined home, is a lump of ice that forms an Ice Ancient when struck.

Like the other Ancient you faced, you’ll need to wait for the right moment to strike. Prime your axe to throw when his chest is exposed and dodge the projectiles until you spot explosive stones fall out, then toss them back. When he falls to his knees exposing his chest again, toss your axe again to fill his stun meter and start pounding on him. This ancient will also release concentrates beams of ice that are tough to avoid, and will start summoning Nightmares at low health - so have Atreus help you ward off unwanted distractions. Killing it will get you plenty of Solid Svartalfheim Steel, Ancient’s Rubble, a Frost Sigil of Defense, and another Ancient’s Heart. (Note: if you missed the Ice Ancient and want to find him in the post-game, he's at the edge of the area near the entrance to the Hidden Chamber of Odin in Thamur's Corpse)

To the left of where you fought the Ice Ancient, you can spot a closed gate with three Rune Seals similar to a Nornir Chest. In order to raise the gate, you’ll need to match the symbols of the “E”, sideways “R”, and sideways “p”.

There’s a rune mechanism up to the left you can hit - but with only one paddle you’ll need to orient yourself to hit behind the mechanism to reach the “R” looking rune.

Now run back to where the Rune Reads were at the other side of the tundra and look for a paddle you can hit to raise up the rune mechanism, and quickly rotate it to the “E” rune.

Finally, head down the path on the right to a font of Shatter Crystal near a Hacksilver Chest, and take the crystal further towards the giant’s face and to the left to find a bunch of World Tree Sap blocking the last mechanism you can rotate once freed to the “p” Rune.

Grab the other Hacksilver Chest nearby as you return to the gate to find a Coffin with several Solid Svartalfheim Steel, and the Mark of the Ranger - a Legendary Enchantment!

Before moving towards the Giant’s Face, be sure to grab another piece of Shatter Crystal and return to where the Rune Read was and toss the crystal up at the sap covering the Light Crystal.

Knock the blue crystal down and take it over to a pedestal on the right to uncover a Realm Tear - thankfully this one won’t spawn any enemies, but will reward you with the Dust of Realms all the same.

Find a Way to Break the Ice

Now head on the path down towards the Head of Thamur and look below the ice to find the piece of the chisel you need. Kratos has a plan to get it, but before you can act on it, you’ll be ambushed by a ton of Draugr - including ranged, heavy, and shielded. Take out the simple ranged fighters first or use their projectiles and redirect them at other foes with Countering Blast. Then focus on your fire on the slower heavier Draugr.

After the first wave, more Draugr will show up, backed by not one but TWO Ogres - one higher level than the other. Things can get dicey here, especially as they start throwing Draugr your way. If you can use Spartan Rage as soon as you can and focus heavily on the higher level Ogre and use Atreus to build up damage and the stun meter as quick as you are able. Once you hop on the Ogrel, use him to easily destroy the lesser Ogre and the nearby Draugr, and he’ll be much easier to finish off by himself.

As the fight ends, Sindri will appear on a cliff off to the side and lower a chain for you to climb up to greet him. He’ll give your axe another minor enhancement, and you can buy or upgrade some equipment if you need to - like making sure Atreus’ bow and quiver are are at least level 4.

To find a way to the large hammer in the distance, you’ll need to start manipulating the dead giant. Start by looking at his beard for more Shatter Crystals along the length of a braid.

Hit each one with a Shock Arrows (You’ll need to spin the middle clasp with your axe to reveal the crystal) in order to break apart the rocks that hold the braid in place - giving you a new path.

Head across the new path to a large building with a Hacksilver Chest at the front, and move around the side to find a door inside.

Video Guide (Part 25)

Here you’ll find a very formidable Traveler enemy - a viking encased in plate mail with a heavy shield on their back and an impenetrable shield slung over their back.

This foe will usually begin his attack be turning his back to you with his sword behind him, and in this position he’s near invulnerable - though certain Runic Attacks can deal damage.

From this position he will either start an unblockable lunge, or sweep his sword in large spins that are hard - but not impossible - to block. After these attacks, when he turns to face you, that is your moment to unload as much damage as possible, but being ready for his counter.

The Traveler can quickly go from an exposed position to an unblockable overhand swing, and he’ll do this several times the more his health drops - so be prepared to dodge repeatedly when he gets lower on his health.

He’ll also summon in Reaver Shadows both above and on the side to attack you from different angles - have Atreus quickly take them down to continue the fight.

Be wary if he starts to hold a grisly glowing trophy over his head - it will charge up before doing massive damage - but you can hit with your axe at a distance or have Atreus to break it and stun the foe.

Once you start getting his health low enough, his armor will start breaking, and you’ll finally be able to stagger him with heavy hits or countering shield attacks - though he’ll still be un-stunnable. He’ll be no less dangerous on the offensive, so play it safe and wait for your opening to finish the job. Kill him and gain the Traveler’s Grisly Trophy and Traveler’s Armor Shard as crafting components to make their armor your own.

Legendary Chest Location:
As you move to pull out the large stone blocking the exit, stop pulling when it reaches the large sword-shaped pendant that’s draped over the building. You can climb up on top of the stone and then throw your axe at the sides of the giant’s pendants to alter it’s facing.

From here you can leap to the pendant and then on to the high platform to a find a Legendary Chest holding Blessing of the Frost - a Heavy Runic Attack.

Continue out the exit after you’ve pulled the large block away and head onto a ramp leading to the side of another building. Climb down to the left to get the chest on the balcony, then climb around the side until you can get up to find one of the straps of the giant hammer before you - and a Shatter Crystal is embedded in the strap.

Walk up to the strap and interact to push it towards the base of ice on the far side, and have Atreus hit it when it swings close. Do this twice, and it will rupture the ice - breaking all but the last chain that holds the hammer in place.

Make Your Way Up to the Hammer

Now that the strap has changed position, move along to its new position and hit it the Shatter Crystal once more to break open a wall of ice leading to a Coffin, and claim some Solid Svartalfheim Steel.

Now return to the strap and climb it all the way up and around until you reach a hole in the hammer’s grip.

Move to the other side and continue up until you reach another passage, then shoot the Shatter Crystal blocking the exit. As you climb to the base of the last strap - all that’s left is to give it a shove and hold on tight!

The ensuing shift of the hammer will drop you onto a new platform - but you still have to direct the hammer to drop into the ice below. Grab the Hacksilver from a body outside and then enter the door to the building.

Once inside, loot the Coffin to the left to get a Runeweaver War Belt and Solid Svartalfheim Steel. In the next room, there’s a sand bowl on the other side of the room with the collapsed floor - since you can’t get there yourself, break some debris on the right and have Atreus crawl through to reach it.

As Atreus reads the riddle, several panels will appear behind him marking four different seasons. On his suggestion, hit the moving panels to read the seasons left to right: Winter (snowflake), Spring (flower) , Summer (sun), Autumn (leaf).

However, this is not the correct order, as Mimir points out - so try it in reverse: Autumn (leaf), Summer (sun), Spring (leaf), Winter (snowflake). This should trigger the solving of the riddle. This will activate a temporal loop that causes the platform to rise - so long as Atreus keeps carving the runes, However, in order to make it to the top, you’ll need to take out the waves of enemies that appear before time runs out.

The first wave will consist of Draugr from all sides, but thankfully mostly regular Draugr and a few Shield Draugr. Focus on breaking their defenses and using area-of-effect Runic attacks to clear them out as quick as possible.

The second wave will consist of stronger Draugr, including Speed Draugr and Heavy Draugr. At this point, you may want to start focusing on knockback heavy attacks that can send enemies flying over the sides. Skills like Leviathan’s Fury, Shoulder Barrage, and Guardian’s Justice - or even just a heavy kick can work well for knocking enemies away before they can harass you for too long.

The third wave will pit you against a horde of Exploding Nightmares, backed up by a high level Revenant, and more Draugr. Have Atreus pick off the Nightmares then stun the Revenant, then worry about the Draugr last.

If things get too tough, cue Spartan Rage and beatdown the Revenant before it can get away.

As you reach the top, several ranged Draugr will appear to destroy the sand bowl - and time is running out.

Quickly kill them, and then target the two Shatter Crystals up on the platform above to create a path you can jump to and climb up before the dias collapses.

Now that you’re on the top, grab some nearby Hacksilver from a corpse and then start climbing over to where the giant hammer sits. Give it a giant push and ride it all the way down to the bottom!

Make Your Way to the Chisel

Now that you’re under the ice, the way to the still glowing chisel tip is in view. Start climbing your way across, and watch for a giant crashing of ice to down.

Once you start climbing down, head back right instead of left to find a Coffin under a small platform you can hop to and get Solid Svartalfheim Steel.

Head down to the platform when the path drops away, then look for another handhold going up an ice wall. Climb around until you can jump to the opposite side of the ravine, and look left for a dead body holding Hacksilver before you venture through a giant door.

Video Guide (Part 26)

Inside the Dining Hall, there’s a big frozen banquet for you… ok maybe not. Several shapes are embedded in the icy wall at the far end - and you’re going to have to disrupt them if you want out.

Look for the giant chandelier with a Shatter Crystal and have Atreus hit it to rumble things up. Keep hitting it until the crystal falls to the ground and lets you take pieces out.

Throw it against the far left icy wall and detonate it to summon several Wulvers out of the ice - including a Fierce Wulver.

These guys are tough when they surround you, so make use of big Runic Attacks and Runic Summons to stun and disorient them, and watch for their strikes to counter with your shield, and hit them full of shock arrows to immobilize them.

A path is created from the ice you blew out, but you can’t reach it yet. Hit the far right ice wall next and detonate it. This will release a Fierce Ogre and several Nightmares to fight. Focus on getting the Nightmares out of the way while dodging strikes and boulders from the Ogre. Then focus big stunning attacks on the Ogre as you duck under its blows until you can hop on and beat it over the head until its dead.

Finally, to fully create your path, turn your attention to the center ice wall, where a new fearsome Troll - the Icebeard King, will emerge. He’s an ice troll like the one in the Mountain, but a lot tougher and faster.

He’ll use his charged up ice foot or weapon to cause ice tremors to burst out - but remember a well placed axe or arrow in his charged up appendages or head can stun him for a moment, letting you rush in with a heavy attack. Follow up with big Runic Attacks, and listen for Atreus to call out the addition of wolves in the room so you can focus on picking them off before they distract you.

As the battle rages on, take great care to watch for the Icebeard King to start building momentum by moving his weapon around his back and over his head. He’ll slam it into the ground to create icicle shards in a wide area in front of him - then detonate them to great effect. Dodge around to the side and have Atreus swap to Light Arrows if you increase the stun effect, and follow up with shield slams to build stun so you can climb up the Troll and bash his head in until the finisher.

Dethrone the King, and you’ll gain the Boar Stampede - a Runic Summon, as well as Solid Svartalfheim Steel.

Before you head up the path, throw one last Shatter Crystal at a coffin encased in sap up on a ledge above you, then head up the new path you formed, leading to another of Sindir’s Shops. Now would be a good time to upgrade what you can - like getting Atreus new armor or making sure his bow and quiver are in good shape.

Look above the shop for a hanging bucket full of Hacksilver, then exit outdoors and swing a quick right to find the Coffin you unraveled that contains Solid Svartalfheim Steel.

Head out towards the chisel - but as luck would have it, a pair of troublemakers have been sent to stop you.

Defeat Magni and Modi

You’ll be taking on two bosses at once here, one armed with a lightning sword, the other with lightning mace and shield. One will usually go after Atreus while the other focuses on you.

While this can sometimes be a good thing - it will also leave Atreus vulnerable to getting knocked down and unable to help you - so you’ll want to help him out whenever possible - just don’t get overwhelmed.

If you see an alert indicator, run over to attack whichever brother is grabbing Atreus, or you’ll have to pick him back up off his feet if he goes down.

Magni swill use a lot of backhanded swings in a 3-hit combo, but they can be blocked and countered, though some of his overhand swings are unblockable - but he needs a running start to do them and you have plenty of time to dodge them.

Modi will infuse his shield with electric power to try charging with shield out - and while you shouldn’t try and punch through it, you can block and counter the charge when it’s not marked as unblockable. If you see him start banging his shield, get back and block the incoming lightning blast that will come down to hit an area around him.

Despite the tag-team effort, you’re going to want to focus on one of them for the majority of your attacks - as you may notice the stun damage you inflict does not dissipate like it does on other monsters.

If you can build up this stun to full, they’ll be knocked to the ground and unable to fight for a long period - but also surrounded by an impervious electrical field. Use this opportunity to maximize your damage on the surviving brother.

If facing Magni, he may try and grab you, but you can tap square with Atreus’ help to give him a taste of his own medicine.

After stunning both of them fully, they’ll do a team attack to blind you and send the arena in darkness and lightning.

At this point, keep turning and pivoting and look for an attack indicator or them running out of the shadows to hold block and fend them off until the light returns.

In this second phase, Modi will start chucking electrical bombs into the arena to explode in a sizeable radius that you’ll need to watch out for.

Similarly, Magni will throw his sword into the ground and pull it up in a moving shockwave attack - but you can block or dodge this if you see it coming. Sometimes, Magni may even toss an electrically charged Modi into the air to create a blast on his impact.

If you start running low on health, be sure to look around the arena for any health stones to pick up during the fight - as it lasts awhile. After stunning the pair of them again, they’ll again turn the arena into a lightning storm. This time, they may try to fake you out - if you see them stop short, drop your shield and keep panning to catch the other brother before he strikes.

In the final phase, they’ll start even more team attacks to send shockwaves across the arena, including Magni charging up a blast by holding his sword aloft - which you can break if you slam into him quickly enough.

Modi can also hit his shield to force a lightining beam out at you - keep your shield raised and strafe to orient yourself against both attackers until the beam fades.

Keep the pain on one of them to stun them out of the game, and then focus all your attacks on the second brother. Once all their health it depleted, follow the prompts to complete the fight.

With the battle won, retrieve the rewards from the fallen that include Leiptr Alloy and another Frozen Flame for your axe. Walk up to the giant chisel and hack off a piece with your axe - with this new item, not only can you inscribe the rune you need, but you can also unlock all of the Hidden Chamber doors you’ve come across thus far!

God of War’s “The Magic Chisel” Journey follows the events of “A New Destination,” and Kratos and company have to retrieve a magic chisel from the aforementioned new destination. Mimir will guide you, but it’s a short trip. This also marks the beginning of the Low Water phase in the Lake of Nine, so there’s some new stuff to explore. Feel free to wander a little bit and pick up some loot and XP.

From Tyr’s Bridge, head (heh, Mimir joke) north-northeast toward the huge statues of the oarsmen guarding a canyon. Follow the Mason’s Channel until you come to a closed gate on your left. Continue past to find a beach — this is where you can pick up the “Anatomy of Hope” Favor.

Spin the wheel to open the gate. This will trigger a level three ogre and some dark elves to spawn. Take them out, clean up all the loot they dropped, and hop back in your canoe.

Paddle along the narrow tunnel until you hit a boat dock. There are no turns to worry about, so just paddle, listen to Mimir and hit every Aegir Gold barrel you see.

At the dock, there’s a Mystic Gateway on your left. More pressing, though, are the pair of twaiting for you — one level 2 and one level 3. Handle them, then sweep the beach for any loose things to pick up.

When you’re done return to the dock next to the Mystic Gateway and face away from your canoe. Turn a little to the left and scan the tops of the cliffs for one of Odin’s Ravens.

Follow the left side of the beach to find a hidden chamber door.

Now you can turn your attention to that giant ring — specifically the jewel. Have the boy shoot it to knock it free. Walk up and swing it to the right first. Have the boy shoot it again to blast open a cave with a coffin inside where you can grab some solid Svartalfheim steel.

Rotate the ring all the way to the left and have the boy shoot the gem again. This will blast open a tunnel for you to follow.

Drop into the room on the other side of the tunnel. There’s a Mystic Gateway ahead of you, but that’s all there is in this room. Climb up the ledge on your left and follow that hallway around to the second floor of this area. Turn left at the top and follow the floor around to the right. Run past the chain to find another coffin. This one has the Runic Wyrmskin Pauldrons inside.

Back up to the chain and climb up. This will bring you to a frozen lake.

There’s lots to pick up here, but, once again, there’s a pair of Wulvers waiting that you have to deal with first. And then there’s an Ice Ancient and some nightmares because why not?

Once everything is dealt with, start back at the cave you just climbed out of. There’s a coffin directly ahead of you with the Plated Runeweaver Bracers. Stick to the right side of the lake for some loose hacksilver and wooden chest.

Turn right at the wooden chest and look at the hill above you. There’s a light crystal trapped in some sap and a spinning panel. You can’t do anything with either of them yet, but you’ll be back here momentarily.

After the wooden chest, you’ll have to head left toward the middle of the lake a little, but continue along the right side as best you can. You’ll pass by a shatter crystal root and you’ll be able to see a light crystal socket.

Grab a shatter crystal from the root and head back to where you saw the light crystal in the sap a second ago. Toss the crystal and have the boy shoot it to knock the light crystal free.

While you’re here, have the boy read the runes on the wall.

Pick up the light crystal and carry it back to the socket to open a realm tear. There’s no fight for this one, so just collect your Dust of Realms.

Don’t follow the bloody path yet. Instead, we’re going to cut back across the lake to the left bank. Before you cross, grab some more sap from the root. Then cross straight back to the opposite shore. There’s a wooden chest on your left and a rubble-and-sap wall in front of you. Toss your crystal and have the boy shoot it to free the rune spinner.

The rune door you’re trying to open is just to the left. Run over to check out the runes, then come back here to lock in the first (read: easiest to get to) rune.

The second rune is to the left of the door. There’s only one paddle on the spinner, though, so you’ll have to keep repositioning to spin it.

The third rune is attached to that spinning panel to the right of where you picked up the light crystal earlier. Turn around from the rune door and cross the lake. Throw your axe at the spinning panel, recall it and quickly aim at the rune spinner. If you can hit the right side to make it spin counterclockwise, it should only take one try.

After the rune door opens, crawl through the tunnel and open the coffin for a Mark of the Ranger legendary enchantment.

Now you can move to the next area. Follow the blood under the ice toward the giant’s head — you can’t miss it.

Once you’re in the next area, you’ve got a big fight ahead of you. There are a handful of draugr and a pair of ogres to take care of. As always, when the ogres show up, focus on the weaker one until you can mount it, then use it beat up everything else.

After the fight, sweep the area for anything to pick up, then climb the chain to go talk to Sindri. He’ll upgrade your axe and you can spend a few minutes outfitting yourself and the boy before moving on.

When you’re done, turn to the right and follow the dead giant’s beard braids (hurk) over the wall. Keep walking to the right until you can see a bead just on the other side of the wall. Hit one of the discs with your axe to set the bead spinning, then immediately have the boy shoot an arrow to try to hit the gem that spins past. (This will probably take a few tries.) Once you blow up the wall, run back to the left and jump the gap.

Follow the path to the right. Climb up the ledge, then watch for a wooden chest at the next turn. Keep following the path across another gap and up a couple of steps until you come to some large doors.

On the other side, you’ll be facing a level four Traveler. This one has a giant shield on his back, so you can’t get any extra damage that way. If you have any Spartan Rage built up, now is a great time to use it. Beyond that, just pay careful attention to the ring that appears around the Traveler’s attacks — when it’s yellow, parry and get some extra attacks in; when it’s red, roll for your life. For added fun, a couple of fire-throwing draugr will show up in the windows high on the walls around the room during your fight.

After everything is dead, sweep the room for pickups, then look for a moveable rock behind where you first spotted the Traveler.

Back it up just a little — hit the thumbstick enough to get Kratos moving and then let it go. It will stop just inside the room. Run around to the right side and climb on top. Look toward the top of the huge wooden sword for discs you can hit with your axe. Your goal is to jump from the top of the stone to the sword, climb up to the hilt, then make your way to the right where you can drop to the platform.

Follow the ledge around and open the Legendary chest you find there for the Blessings of the Frost heavy runic attack.

Drop back into the room where you fought the Traveler. Grab the stone again and back it up as far as you can. Climb on top once again and jump to gap to your left for a wooden chest.

Hop back down and go through the doorway you just unblocked. Turn to the left and jump the gaps. When you’re hanging off the first ledge, climb left and then down. You’ll find a small alcove with a wooden chest. Climb back out and around the tower to the right.

When you find the crystal hanging off of the handle of the giant’s hammer, walk up and grab it. Kratos will give it a shove, then you can have Atreus shoot it to start breaking the ice. You’ll have to do this twice to get the hammer to start to fall.

Once the strap falls free, have the boy shoot it a third time to break an ice wall and open a path to a coffin. You’ll find some solid Svartalfheim steel inside.

There’s nothing to pick up for a minute, so just keep climbing until you knock the hammer free a little bit more and land in front of some doors.

Riding the platform

Items in this area: coffin (Runeweaver War Belt)

As soon as you go through the doors, open the coffin on your left for the Runeweaver War Belt (which completes the Runic set you’ve been collecting in this area).

In the next room, break the planks on the right side to open a tunnel for the boy. Once he interacts with the sand bowl, some spinners will appear beneath the four wall panels. Throw your axe to spin them so that they show the seasons in reverse order. From right to left, they should show winter (snowflake), spring (flower), summer (sun) and autumn (the diamond-shaped leaf). Have the boy interact with the sand bowl again to start the next phase.

There’s nothing to collect for a while, so you just need to focus on fighting. Your ride to the top of this tower is going to involve a few timed fights, so brace yourself.

The first wave is some level 2 and 3 draugr. Throughout this gauntlet, try not to worry about killing each one and focus more on knocking them off the platform — that kills any enemy way faster than you can with your axe. Every time you clear a wave and the boy gets back to writing, run around and pick up all the loot drops.

The second wave is more level 3 draugr.

The third wave adds some nightmares and a revenant.

The platform will stop just short of the top. Take out the two fire-throwing draugr by having Atreus shoot both of the crystals. This will also knock free some ice and expose a wall you can climb.

When you reach the top of the tower, all you have to do is climb around the wall on your right and give the hammer a godly shove. Everything goes according to plan.

Crawl out of your tunnel and jump the gap to the ledges lining the wall.

When you make the first turn, you’ll see a coffin below you. Keep climbing to the left past it, then climb down. At the bottom of the ledges — about even with the coffin’s alcove — you’ll be able to climb to the right and open it for some more solid Svartalfheim steel.

Climb back onto the ledges and keep making your way generally leftward.

You’ll drop into a wood-floored area with some inactive draugrs. There’s nothing to pick up here, so just stick to the right to find some more ledges to climb.

At the top, follow the path around to the left. Watch on your left for a ledge and some hacksilver. Go through the next set of doors and into the next structure.

When you first enter the Dining Hall, there’s another hidden chamber door on your left. Turn to the right and look for the chandelier stuck in the ice. Have the boy shoot it to free it. Have the boy shoot it a couple more times until the crystal falls out.

Grab a chunk of the crystal and toss it at the rightmost ice wall. Have the boy shoot it to break the wall. This will release a level 3 ogre and a pair of nightmares. Handle them, then clean up all their loot drops.

Toss another crystal at the middle ice wall. This one will release the Stonebeard King, a troll. There are two things to watch out for during this fight: the King’s ice wave stomp attack and the level three and four Woluvers that come to help him out. If you’re really quick (and better at fighting than we are), you can interrupt this attack by hitting his glowing leg — but it’s usually safer to just roll out of the way.

Clean up the drops again and break open the third (left) ice wall. A few level two and three Wulvers will pop out. This is your last fight here, thankfully.

Before you climb up through the wulver’s wall, head back to the crystal one more time. Grab a chunk and turn to the right. Use the crystal to free the coffin above you on the right — we’ll go open it in just a second.

Climb up through the wulver’s wall and follow the hallway around to the right until you come to Sindri. Before you talk to him, walk past him and through the door. Take an immediate right and hop the pillar to find the coffin you just freed. Open it for some more solid Svartalfheim steel.

Now you can go back to Sindri and upgrade anything and everything you can — don’t hold back here. You’ve got a big fight coming up. While you’re managing inventory, make sure your enchantments are up-to-date with the strongest and best socketed into the armor you’re currently wearing.

Head through the door to the left of Sindri’s shop and follow the path to the left. Hop the gap to the ledge, then follow it along to the right. At the end, you’ll be able to see the chisel. Walk toward it and act surprised when someone gets in your way (you didn’t think it’d be that easy did you?)

There’s not a lot of subtlety to this fight — you’re taking on two sons of a god, after all. Hit hard, hit often and don’t hold back anything. Use your runic attacks and talisman abilities. Use Atreus’ runic summons every time you can. Parry everything you can (check out our God of War combat guide and the GIF below for a quick tutorial on parrying) and get the hell out of the way of everything else.

The best way to deal with Magni and Modiis to focus on one at a time. Once you drain the health of one of them, they’ll take a knee and will stay out of the fight for a little bit. That makes the fight a lot easier to handle.

Between the three phases of the fight, run around and look for any healing stones that have gotten knocked free. Don’t collect what you don’t need at the moment, though — there’s a lot of them, but it’s still a finite number, and you don’t want to run out.

After the fight (spoiler: Kratos wins), pick up the wonderful prizes the godlings dropped — a piece of Leiptr alloy and a Frozen Flame. Then you can go hack off a piece of the chisel.

how to solve seasons puzzle in god of war magic chisel quest

This is because the riddle on the sand bowl itself, which Atreus reads before recounting his mother&#;s song, is the most important piece of the puzzle. Atreus will recite the song back to you as many times as you need, but the sand bowl riddle is basically a blink-and-you&#;ll-miss-it moment. It goes: &#;When time itself is disarrayed / The forward path is retrograde.&#; That&#;s the key component to this whole puzzle. The sequence of seasons that Atreus gives you is correct, but you have to put them in the reverse, aka retrograde, order. So, the actual solution of the puzzle is, from left to right: Autumn, Summer, Spring, Winter. Or, if it&#;s easier for you: Leaf, Sun, Flower, Snowflake.

Once you put the seasons in the correct order, hit Square to talk to Atreus, and that will solve the puzzle. Be careful, as your ascent towards the hammer&#;s head won&#;t exactly be peaceful. Get ready to tussle.

God Of War (2018) - Seasons Pictures I The Magic Chisel I Puzzle I Guide

As Kratos and Atreus journey to enter the region of the giants in God of War, they must firstly obtain the special Magic Chisel. In this guide we'll be walking you through how to solve a series of puzzle and how to get the Magic Chisel.

On this page:

The Magic Chisel Walkthrough in God of War

From the horn that Mimir’s head just used to talk to the World Serpent, head towards Brok’s Shop, then turn left to get to the boat on the northern edge of the area. You can now sail towards the two giant statues pointing oars downwards into the river, heading through them to discover the brand new Mason’s Channel area.

Dock upriver, using the wheel to lower the gate below water level, and then sail through it, all while the head of Mimir recounts an ancient tale. Activate the Mystic Gateway on your left when you dock, and then head forward to encounter the new enemy that looks suspiciously similar to a Werewolf. This new enemy is quick in battle, so make sure to Atreus’ frost arrows to temporarily give them pause.

How to Get into the Hidden Chamber

After the fight is over, you can discover a new Hidden Chamber on your left, and then head back, interacting with the handle underneath the large sap-like sphere to turn it right. Have Atreus shoot it, and it’ll smash the ice, letting Kratos claim some Solid Svartalheim Steel from the chest there. Now turn the sphere to face the left, and do the same to smash through the ice there, letting you continue the Magic Chisel quest.

You can now discover yet another Hidden Chamber in this next area, before climbing up the chain on the left and head through the raised icy section, heading past the next chain to discover a chest containing some Runic Wyrmskin Pauldrons. Now climb up the chain, and Kratos and Atreus will find themselves in a wide open area with several more vicious Werewolves.

Kill the Werewolves, and then open the chest in the middle of the area to claim some Plated Runeweaver Bracers. Now turn around, and you’ll see a locked gate with three symbols above, not unlike a Nornir chest. The first contraption to unlock this gate can be found just to the left of it, and you’ll need to have it displaying the symbol that looks like an R lying on its side.

The next contraption can be found behind you at the other end of the area, and is raised up out of the ground by Kratos hitting a yellow board with his Leviathan Axe. You need to hit the board, then hit the contraption quickly to turn it around, until it shows that looks like a backwards B. For the final contraption, you’ll have to first grab an orb of sap from the nearby deposit, and then head to the area right of the gate, throwing the sap so Atreus can shoot it and free the final contraption.

Now turn the contraption until it shows the symbol with a single triangle pointing upwards, and you can head back to the gate, head through, and unlock the chest that contains the power Mark of the Ranger Legendary Enchantment, which increases axe throwing damage.

Now head towards the very end of the area, where you’ll be attacked by several frost Nightmares. Take them out, and lift up the fallen stone pillar to reach the new Head of Thamur area. You’ll now be up against hordes of fire Draugr as well as two Ogres, so make sure to search around you for any objects you can destroy to uncover any healing items. Use Atreus’ frost arrows on the Ogres and Draugr, and this fight shouldn’t be particularly difficult.

Now climb up the chain on the right of the area, and you can talk to Sindri. After you’re done with the dwarf, destroy all three orbs of sap along beard of Thamur, and you can start the climb upwards to the top of Thor’s hammer.

It’s quite the climb, and a bit of the way up you’ll encounter a fairly powerful Draugr enemy, complete with a great sword and heavy shield. You’ll want to use Atreus’ shock arrows in this situation, to whittle away his armor to Kratos can deliver attacks straight to the body of the Draugr. After you’re done, pull the cart at the end so it’s just in front of the doorway, and then hit the hanging object on the left until you can climb up it from standing atop the cart.

Jump off the hanging object to the right, and you’ll be able to open a chest containing the Blessings of the Frost Heavy Attack Rune. Now head through the doorway behind the cart, and you can jump off the pathway at the end, climbing round the corner to the right to reach a pathway with a giant sap orb ahead of you.

To solve this puzzle, you’ll have to have Kratos grab the handle at the bottom of the hanging object, and push it away towards the ice, having Atreus shoot the orb as soon as possible so that then it explodes, it shatters the ice behind it. Do this several times, and then after the banner has fallen down, shoot it one last time to smash the ice on the pathway next to it, letting Kratos claim the Solid Svartalheim Steel from the chest within.

Now you can make your ascent up the hammer starting from the fallen banner, but it’s not too tricky a climb. Once you’re at the top, you’ll be prompted to unbuckle the handle, and then jump off the hammer itself. Now head through the double doors ahead of you, and open the chest in this next area to claim the Runeweaver War Belt Waist Armor.

Seasons Puzzle Solution

In this next puzzle section, you’ll have to unravel the order of the seasons using the Leviathan Axe, before Atreus can write the correct order in the sand pedestal. The final order, going from left to right, is:

  1. Autumn
  2. Summer
  3. Spring
  4. Winter

In this next section while the platform rises, you’ll have to defeat every enemy as quickly as possible while the timer in the top of the screen decreases. You don’t have a huge amount of time for this, so make sure to use Atreus’ shock arrows as often as possible, before shooting the sap orbs with shock arrows once you’ve reached the top, allowing Kratos and Atreus to jump off.

The next section sees the pair climbing their way around the frozen cliff edges, all the way until you reach the Dining Hall area. Check on your left to discover a Hidden Chamber, but then have Atreus shoot the sap in the chandelier, so that it swings back and forth, taking out chunks of ice on the wall until it crashes down to the floor.

Now pick up chunks of the sap, and throw it at the icy walls to uncover some particularly nasty enemies. Firstly you’ll discover a frost giant, which can be taken out fairly easily as you have done with past giant encounters in God of War. Make sure to put Atreus’ shock arrows to use in this section, and then on the Ogres that get set loose afterwards.

Now climb up the runic cliff wall at the edge of the area, and you can head round the upper level to reach Sindri’s shop. Continue ahead, and you’ll initiate the final big boss battle of the quest.
