Quizlet Just Raised $30M at a $1 Billion Valuation. But Don’t Call It a Unicorn.

Unicorns don’t exist, except as an analogy for private companies supposedly worth at least $1 billion. But as WeWork’s IPO debacle has shown, sometimes those valuations are imaginary, too.

To Quizlet CEO Matt Glotzbach, the mythical creature symbolizes “an ethos of a growth-at-all-cost” startup mentality, one that prioritizes user numbers and other vanity metrics over “the basic business fundamentals of profitability and unit economics.”

That’s why even though Quizlet just closed a $30 million Series C round at a $1 billion valuation, Glotzbach prefers a different animal analogy, one that better reflects the patient journey of a business that began as online flashcards—and that now aims to be something much bigger.

Something real, at least.

“I want to run the business more like a camel,” quips Glotzbach.

He didn’t specify whether he prefers the single- or double-humped variety. But Glotzbach’s point is that camels are hardy and steady—just as he hopes his company can be. “They can survive in the harshest environments. They can go for long periods without food and water,” he explains, sounding like a biology teacher or zookeeper.

Glotzbach credits the metaphor to Alex Lazarow, who authored a book about entrepreneurship that challenges prevailing Silicon Valley startup norms. It’s a reminder of basic business principles: Grow responsibly. Manage costs. Don’t rely on venture capital (but when you do raise some, don’t burn it all at once.)

“When camels do get to a watering spot, they can guzzle water faster than any other animal on the planet,” Glotzbach adds. “But they make it last.”

He says that’s the approach for the cash infusion from this latest round, which was led by General Atlantic, a private equity firm that has backed big education companies across the globe. Its recent investments include language-learning app Duolingo, along with Byju’s and Ruangguru, widely used in India and Indonesia, respectively.

“General Atlantic has strong conviction around the digitization of education, a theme we have invested behind globally for years. We view Quizlet as an emerging leader in the field and are excited by the company’s approach to personalized learning,” said Peter Munzig, managing director of General Atlantic, in an email. He is joining Quizlet’s board of directors.

Other investors in this round include previous backers Costanoa Ventures, Icon Ventures, Owl Ventures and Union Square Ventures. With this latest fundraise, the San Francisco-based company has raised $62 million in venture capital to date.

Fundraising conversations began this January, according to Glotzbach. This latest round is “primarily a people investment,” focused on shoring up talent to support “data science and machine-learning capabilities to build out our vision of an AI-powered tutor to help everyone learn,” he explains.

To get there, the company is also exploring opportunities to acquire other businesses for the first time in its history. “We are a technology-focused company, so things that are of interest will have some footprint in machine learning and artificial intelligence,” adds Glotzbach.

The company currently employs a team of nearly 200 full-time employees, and could grow to 300 by the end of the year.

While those plans are a recipe for spending money, “we’ve been capital efficient and careful about not burning cash,” he claims. When they do, they prioritize seeing results. Revenue from its subscription business has “doubled every year for the past few years,” says Glotzbach, who declined to disclose specific figures.

The company last raised investment capital in 2018 at a $200 million valuation. To quintuple that valuation to $1 billion in two years is a small accomplishment of its own, he notes.

From Flashcards to Fundraise

Fiscal discipline is part of the company’s history. For its first 10 years, Quizlet’s business was entirely bootstrapped. It was founded in 2005, by Andrew Sutherland, who at the time was a 15-year-old student who programmed online flashcards to help him pass French class. The startup initially made money from a side business run by one of the co-founders.

That tool would become one of the most popular flashcard study apps on the market. By 2009, Quizlet was profitable, thanks to a paid subscription model. By 2015, the company claimed it had 40 million monthly active users, mostly in the U.S. That’s when it first raised outside capital, in the form of a $12 million Series A round, to accelerate its global expansion plans.

Quizlet has come a long way since its early days as a tool for making and sharing digital flashcards. Today, it boasts a feature that creates customized study plans for students, based on what subjects they need to learn, and by when (usually in time for a big test). It claims its quizzes can deliver feedback specific to students’ responses on open-ended questions. There’s also a small but growing content marketplace for tests and professional certifications.

Glotzbach credits researcher Benjamin Bloom’s “2 Sigma Problem” paper, which suggests that a personal tutor can help any student improve academically, as inspiration for what he hopes Quizlet can become. That vision has become a sort of Holy Grail among education technologists (but researchers have since questioned whether the study, done in 1984, may be outdated).

To build tools that can approximate what a personal tutor can provide, Quizlet is banking on its large swath of usage data. The company claims it is now used by more than 50 million monthly active users, who have created more than 400 million study sets. Over a billion questions are asked and answered on the platform every week. Every activity and data point is used to improve its predictive models, which informs the content recommendations that the system makes for each user.

That work is where the data scientists and machine-learning specialists come in. And this approach is becoming commonplace among education technology companies selling personalized learning tools. Among them is Course Hero, a popular destination for college course materials, which also recently earned “unicorn” status after a fundraise.

Quizlet also has its eyes set on growing outside the U.S., where about 70 percent of its users live, estimates Glotzbach. After the pandemic outbreak, he says the company has seen roughly 300 percent growth in new users from abroad. But he hesitates to draw up plans and conclusions based on that data, acknowledging the spike could be a one-time anomaly.

“There’s a lot of market volatility, and the numbers alone can mask what’s actually going on with our business,” says Glotzbach. “We have to dig deeper to really understand what’s going on.”

Until 2011, Quizlet shared staff and financial resources with the Collectors Weekly web site.[10] In 2015, Quizlet announced raising $12 million from Union Square Ventures, Costanoa Venture Capital, Altos Ventures and Owl Ventures to expand its digital study tools and grow internationally.[11]

In 2011, Quizlet added the ability to listen to content using text-to-speech.[12] In August 2012, it released an app for the iPhone and iPad and shortly afterward one for Android devices.[10]

Quizlet launched a redesign in August 2016 and hired Matt Glotzbach as CEO a few months earlier in May.[13][14] Also in 2016, Quizlet launched "Quizlet Live", a real-time online matching game where teams compete to answer all 12 questions correctly without an incorrect answer along the way.[15]

Glotzbach announced in 2018 that Quizlet would be opening offices in Denver, Colorado in 2018, citing how Quizlet has, "a big vision at Quizlet to provide the most intelligent study tools in the world, and our expansion into Denver, a city with incredible tech ingenuity, will help us more quickly build the next generation of learning tools used by students everywhere".[16] As of 2019, Andrew Sutherland is no longer with Quizlet or it's board.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Glotzbach announced he was opening Quizlet's premium service, Quizlet Teacher, for free to all users who have an account registered as a teacher.[17]

Study modes and games[edit]

As a memorization tool, Quizlet lets registered users create sets of terms and definitions customized for their own needs.[18] These sets of terms can then be accessible to students by studying a variety of modes.[19][20]

Flash Cards
This mode is similar to paper flashcards. Users are shown a "card" for each term, which they can flip over by clicking or using the arrow keys or space bar.[21] The user has the option for the face of the card to be an image, a word, or both
In this mode, definitions scroll vertically down the screen in the shape of asteroids. The user must type the term that goes with the definition before it reaches the bottom. Occasionally, an asteroid will be red. If the user misses a red asteroid twice, the game is over. It is one of the 'Play' study modes.[22] Gravity was adapted from a previous game, Space Race. The user can pick the level of difficulty and game type. An exploit for this game is to put it on "starred mode" and select one word for starred mode by looking at the cards, and then clicking on the star-shaped button.) Going onto the game and starting it with starred mode still on, the user will only have one word, and can thus copy & paste the same word over and over again, resulting in ridiculously high scores. Therefore, games on starred mode will not appear on the leaderboards.
In this mode, users are shown a term or definition and must type the term or definition that goes with what is shown. After entering their answer, they see if their answer was correct, and can choose to override the automatic grading and count their answer as right if needed. This mode is also known as "Learn."
In this mode, the term is read out loud and users must type in the term with the correct spelling. If the user gets every answer correct, they are rewarded with a video of a monster truck doing a jump, wheelie, and flip.[21] This game was previously known as Speller.
In this mode, users are presented with a grid of scattered terms. Users drag terms on top of their associated definitions to remove them from the grid and try to clear the grid in the fastest time possible. Micro-match is a related matching game geared towards mobile devices and devices with small screens.[21] Match was previously attributed as "Scatter", though the game was the same.
In this mode, a Quizlet user (usually a teacher) breaks their class up into teams or plays the game with students individually. The teacher chooses whether to start with a definition or term. Each team will have to choose the correct term/definition to win. . This game works by choosing a set of flashcards and putting these flashcards into a format that works for the game. If a player or team chooses the incorrect term or definition, the score will reset.

Students on Quizlet will often upload information that can be used to cheat within the classroom.[23] In a survey at a High School in Orlando, a student was quoted saying “If someone put $100 in front of you, would you take it?”, referring to the ease with which students can use platforms like Quizlet to cheat on schoolwork.[24] Today, Quizlet's website has an "Honor Code" requiring all users of the website not misuse the platform for academic cheating. This system however relies on the student, and not the platform to abide by its principles.[25]

Quizlet's API is no longer available.[26] It used to allow developers to use any of the study sets made within Quizlet in their own programs. [27]

Best study job ever!!!

I have been using this app since 2018. It haven’t let me down once. My science teacher required fifteen minutes a day on Quizlet and I never scored below 97% on a test. This app has helped me keep straight A’s in so many different ways.
The first way is that it is a very easy app to navigate. This app keeps it very simple with only a few buttons. They also have a help button in their guide that can help you get unstuck if you’re stuck. You need minimal tech knowledge to operate this app.
The second way is that you don’t need a subscription to study. Sure you need it for some features, such as, different fonts and font colors, adding pictures, scanning documents, and saving for offline use. But there are so many simple ways of getting around that.
As you can tell, this is a must have app for all students of any age. Before I knew about Quizlet I never studied, because who does, right? Wrong. After hearing about Quizlet I love to study. So my advice to any parents who might be reading this is, if your kid(s) grades are dropping because they refuse to study, either have them create a set or create on yourself for them to study and have them practice fifteen minutes a day (except the weekends🙂).

Love this app! Just a few recommendations...

This app is so helpful with studying and I 100% recommend to anyone who has classes with lots of vocabulary and/or study guides and tests. I have multiple devices that I use to study (iPad, iPhone, Mac, etc.) and I have noticed that you can only move the terms up/down on the computer. I would prefer to be able to do this on all devices, especially when I’m on the go. When moving terms, you have to do it manually... I advice the programmers to add a feature where you can have a drop down page where you can move it to a specific place immediately, rather than having the ability to only move it manually. When you have two of the same term, quizlet let’s you know. I think it would be much more productive to shoes in setting if you want to be notified if you have two of the same terms, definitions, or completely duplicated information. I have mistaken the alert notifying me of duplicate terms for alerting me for multiple of the same exact thing. Of course, like I said before, I love this app, and besides these tiny mishaps I recommend it to all looking for a productive study.

Learned it banner covers up the bottom of the flash card

Don’t use this app if there are any long scientific words or definitions that you need to memorize. When studying the flash cards the bottom of the card will always say learned it with a little hand pointing right, or study again with a hand pointing left.
Embarrassingly for quizlet, this covers up the bottom of the flash card you are trying to study. So if you have a long enough definition, (which is super common for anyone in the STEM field, and most likely true for those outside of it) you won’t actually be able to use the whole flash card. If there was an option to change the font size of the flash card this would be easily resolved. I have no idea how they haven’t noticed or resolved this years ago considering how long quizlet has been around.
Pictures also cannot be added to both sides of a flash card which really would not be that hard to program. And if you are going to pay extra money to be able to add pictures you would think the advantage would be visually memorizing things, I.e. matching a complex equation with a plot. The picture also can’t be alone on the back of a flash card. If text is not added the app will glitch and not even show the picture.

In conclusion don’t use this app if you are studying STEM or anything with a long definitions. Also don’t pay to add pictures to the flash cards unless you only plan on adding a picture to one side.
